“Have you decided what field you are most interested in?” Lucien asked as they walked, although he was aware enough to take shorter strides so as not to stress Marius out even further.
“You are acquainted with Atrius, correct? Your skills in communication and deception are impressive for your age. There’s no need to hide it, I can tell you are unwell. You still have a paleness to your complexion that cannot be faked,” he explained, although he kept his voice low to make sure it did not carry.
“I admit I only know the basics about what happened with Villefort. You have my sympathy for the losses you’ve suffered. The Council told me I would have to get the rest of the story from Devyn, though. Ah, here we are,” he gestured as they got closer to the hall with the armory. He held the card out for the guards to inspect, although Lucien would have been surprised if they had tried to stop him. He’d only been wearing Alastor’s symbol proudly on his chest for the past several years now.
Although he supposed that was a little arrogant of him to think.
They let them pass, however, and Lucien unlocked the door to let them inside.

Marius dipped his head politely as he stepped past the guards and followed Lucien inside. Though he was surprised at the bluntness and haste at which Lucien called him out, he supposed he should have expected as much. He was obviously clever, and obviously close to Devyn.
He supposed he could have chosen to ignore what Lucien said, or pretend like he hadn’t heard, but that wouldn’t have done either of them any favors. He didn’t want to come across as rude or disrespectful. Now that those things mattered.
“When you call it ‘deception’ you make it sound like a bad thing. I’m well enough, I know my limits. I’d rather people worry about Percy than me. I don’t need to be a distraction right now.” He wasn’t trying to smile now, and there was a certain air of gloom that Marius carried naturally when he let his walls down.
If Lucien already knew, there wasn’t any reason to put forth the effort to maintain the illusion of health and wellness. “Do you really care about what field I’m interested in or are you just being polite? You don’t have to pretend if you don’t want to. It won’t hurt my feelings.”

“I do care,” Lucien said with a polite nod. “For practical purposes at the very least. Should you become a spy or perhaps a politician, I could possibly put in a good word for you once a spot opens up on the Council,” he said as he made his way inside to start picking out pieces of armor. Mostly he was looking at the leather chest pieces. He would have to force Devyn into one, so he wanted to make sure it was ready once he arrived.
“But forgive me if I’ve offended you. Deception is a skill that not many can master. Would you prefer if I called it… playing pretend? It doesn’t have the same sense of danger and mystery, don’t you think?”
He was not bothered by Marius’s more natural state. He suspected as much from the moment he saw him slumped against the wall in Devyn’s bedroom, but not wanting to worry Celyn he said nothing at the time.
“However, given what I know, I can only assume that your goal would be to provide help to your village in one way shape or form, correct? Although that doesn’t mean you couldn’t be a spy. Food for thought. Here, make a note of this one,” he gestured to a chest piece hanging up. “I believe Dr. Eld would fit into this. I may need to hold him down,” he hummed, and then glanced over to Marius. “I jest. I will do my best to convince him to put it on willingly.”

Marius snorted. “He’ll wear it, I’ll ask. I’ll cry if I have to. He’s important to me, he won’t make me an orphan twice over.”
He wrote down a brief description of the armor and where it was going as he spoke.
“You haven’t offended me. I’ve got a thick skin. You’re right, though. Villefort is, and always will be, my priority,” he agreed. “But there is nothing anyone could offer me to tempt me into betrayal. I owe Percy and Devyn my life. By all rights, I should be dead. But they found a way to give me time, and I’ll make the best use of it that I can. Whatever I do in this life, from here on out, I intend to dedicate to Alastor. I will see that Villefort thrives, and I will repay everyone who has ever helped me. It’s only fair. I caused a lot of problems. So I’m going to find solutions. And I’m going to make it up to everyone who helped me.”
He didn’t much care if Lucien called it deception or playing pretend. In the end, it was the same thing. “Do you think I should strive for danger and mystery? I’m no one special. I just want to help. I don’t know if the Council would ever want me. But we’ll see. They’re kind to me, but it might just be for show. So much of Alastor is in your performance.”
There were so many weapons, he couldn’t even recognize half of them. Some looked too heavy, or too impossible, to wield. He wondered how many of them Devyn had trained with.
“Atrius said I might make a good politician, but I don’t know. I’m still poor, sickly Marius. The orphan from Villefort. I think I’ll make good use of that for a while longer. Big eyes and a big cough have earned me quite a bit of sympathy. I’ll keep it up until my essays get published, at least. And then we’ll see. I’m studying a lot of things, I don’t have a focus right now. For practical purposes, I’m studying horticulture and general ecology. I’m trying to move into environmental engineering but there’s a lot that goes into that. I want to make sure Villefort has all the resources it needs to thrive even after this initial buzz runs out. Atrius and Devyn have been helping make sure it’s in the spotlight, but I have to pull my weight too. I know aid won’t be free forever, no matter how hard they work. But with the bog clearing up, Villefort can be self-sufficient again. If we can get the bee population back up, the honey exports alone will be enough to keep Villefort on everyone’s minds. There’s no better than Blackroot Honey. I’ll get you some.”
Lucien had asked what field he was interested in, and if he was going to question his motivations and purposes, Marius had no reason to lie. Devyn would undoubtedly tell him everything at some point. He’d like to prove that his intentions were pure.
“But I’m studying a lot. My education was lacking in Villefort but we didn’t have any teachers. I’m making up for lost time. I’m studying economics, and sociology. Politics, and political science. History. There’s a lot that I don’t know about Alastor. I tried philosophy but I don’t get it.” He shrugged. “I’m going to study medicine, too. Madison doesn’t know he’s my teacher yet, but he’s the only one I want to learn from.”

Lucien chuckled quietly this time, and offered Marius a small smile before holding a finger up to his mouth as if telling a secret.
“I don’t quite get philosophy, either. I’d much prefer something I can hold in my hands and manipulate with known science.” He supposed some philosophy was involved, but most of those conversations left him more exhausted than he’d prefer.
“It is good that you are learning so many things. Madison will be an excellent teacher, whether he knows it or not. Once you see past his demons he purposefully keeps around to torment himself, he is quite charming. But I didn’t say that,” he added with a little wink.
He took note of everything else Marius said, of course. From what he was interested in, to what he thought of Percy and Devyn and how he wanted to devote his life to Alastor. Marius thought he was no one special…? Lucien was interested to see how long that would last.
“Here,” Lucien decided then, reaching to carefully remove a sword from where it was stored on a weapons rack. It was a standard sized sword, but the handle was gold, and the blade was inlaid with gold as well. Something Devyn might appreciate to feel more like it was an extension of himself than something that wasn’t as aesthetically pleasing.
“This should be adequate for fitting through hallways and fight in close quarters. I doubt Dr. Eld would appreciate me picking out a sword for him--” “You’re right, I wouldn’t,” Madison huffed as he aggressively shooed away one of the guards who was reluctantly trying to get him to show proof of entry. As if he needed proof of entry to anything there. He looked a little more put together now. Maybe like he’d washed his face or at least screamed into a pillow for a while. He went over to the weapons rack as well and picked up a sword slightly smaller than the one Lucien picked up for Devyn. He inspected it, then tested how it felt in his hand by giving it a spin and swing in the open area of the room, and then huffed and grumbled about how this was going to be a pain in the a** to deal with.

Marius seemed instantly amused that Madison had shown up as he did. Of course, it made it a little difficult to gossip about him, but Marius didn’t mind so much. He admired Madison, he wasn’t going to run around spilling his secrets.
“Hello again, Dr. Eld,” Marius said brightly, squinting at the two swords and jotting down what he could of them to log them for Lukas. “You should carry a sword more often, I bet people would get out of your way faster.”
He’d put on something of an air again, not quite as performative as he would have been for Celyn, but Madison looked freshly calmed and he wasn’t going to give him any reason to start moping.
“I’ve never seen Devyn use a sword. Has he trained to use all of these weapons or are some of them for show?” Some of these were decorated with so much gold and gemstones that he couldn’t imagine they were for more than ceremony, but then–they all appeared sharp and well maintained.

“ Dr. Eld??” Madison repeated Marius with an incredulous sneer, before glaring at Lucien because he clearly was a bad influence on Marius. “Are you making fun of me? You think I’d get people out of my way fast with this? Just wait until you see me with a bone saw,” he scoffed. While Madison looked like he knew how to handle a sword, he didn’t look entirely comfortable with it. He picked up the matching sheath so he could put it away before anyone got hurt. He already wasn’t looking forward to all the work he was likely going to be doing. He didn’t want to add to that prematurely. “Devyn doesn’t usually have use of a sword,” Lucien hummed, browsing some of the swords for himself. “His magic as a Senshi is powerful enough to cripple most enemies. But yes, he has trained with swords. Dr. Eld, you should try on this--” “No, I’m not wearing anything extra. You’re lucky I’ve decided to come with you in the first place!” he barked, clearly becoming agitated again.

For as much as Marius almost laughed at Madison’s response, he did turn to face him. He didn’t try the waterworks, didn’t try to look extra pathetic. He was honest, and he hoped that meant more.
“Madison, please. If someone gets hurt, it can’t be you. No one will be able to treat them as well as you will. And if you and Lucien aren’t wearing anything, you know Devyn won’t. He won’t even stop to think about it. And Lucien said he was making good time, you know he’s not going to be in the best of shape when he gets here. So, please. I don’t want anything to happen to you. You’ll give me a heart attack. And you know my heart can’t take it. Especially not after today.”
And he was sincere about it! He had a whole list of practical reasons for why Madison should go in as prepared as possible.

Madison bristled when Marius turned on him. He bared his teeth and hissed through them, eyes narrowed on the young man in front of him. He was absolutely going to refuse. Wearing armor brought bad memories. It was bad enough that he was going to be in the thick of things, bad enough that he was even picking out a sword to carry. <********>,” he finally growled. He was already anticipating Devyn to not stop until he collapsed, and even then he would probably figure out a way to get up again. He would put himself into an early grave at this rate, so Marius was unfortunately right in that he’d need to be there to take care of everyone. He supposed there were less nightmares to worry about if everyone got out alive, at least. Not without sympathy, Lucien held up a set of chest armor and bracers for Madison, to which Madison turned and snatched out of his hands. <******** both of you,” he snarled. “******** Devyn. ******** all of this-- <******** off I don’t need your help!” he snapped when Lucien attempted to adjust the armor to make it easier to get on. “You will not be protected as well if you do not have it on correctly,” Lucien sighed and took a step back for a moment until it looked like the doctor was going to relent. It just took a bit of struggling from Dr. Eld before he conceded.
“Marius, there are greaves as well. They shouldn’t be uncomfortable if you loosen up the straps for a better fit when they’re put on,” he directed, already working on the bracers while Dr. Eld hissed and snarled like a wet cat.

“Oh, um. Right,” Marius said, but if he were being honest, he didn’t think he had any idea how to put on armor. He could figure it out, but it wasn’t like he’d really even looked at the guards with any intention of understanding how they were wearing or how they put it on.
He jotted down the additional armor as he took a seat on the ground to help put on the greaves.
“I appreciate you doing this, Madison. I’ll make it up to you,” Marius offered, though there was little he could offer off the top of his head. Madison probably wouldn’t be tempted by potato soup or honey cakes.
They hadn’t talked about why such a thing would be so distressing for him. In some ways, Marius could assume but he didn’t expect he’d ever know. Madison kept many secrets, especially those that hurt, close to his chest. He could probably ask Atrius, even if he’d rather have heard the truth from Madison. He knew Madison wasn’t mad at him, probably not even actually at them. He didn’t let it get to him.
Marius had spent plenty of time with people who weren’t themselves. The harsh words didn’t bother him, he knew they weren’t meant for him.

“You ******** better make it up to me,” Madison hissed, his hands already shaking as he tightened the sleek black breastplace cross his chest, his usually very dexterous fingers fumbling a little with the ******** Devyn. If he didn’t act so rashly all the time--” Madison knew that wasn’t the issue. He knew Devyn was doing his best to get there and help as quickly as possible. Madison was just already feeling completely separated from everything. This wasn’t like being on the battlefield when he and Virgil and Tieran were younger. This would likely literally be just following Devyn around and making sure he didn’t get into too much trouble. He didn’t have to suddenly think about how much he regretted not saying anything to Atrius or Virgil that morning when he left on the urgent summons to the Hall. Or how much he wished he stayed longer the night before, instead of insisting that he go home to review some lab results he’d been waiting on to finish. As much as he hated it, he held still as Lucien worked on putting the vambraces on his forearms. He wanted to fuss with the buckles again, but he instead just shifted uncomfortably on the spot. This was okay. They would get in and out. The doctor’s reaction to getting his armor fitted almost made Lucien pause, but now wasn’t the time to feel guilty. Dr. Eld already decided he would be going with them. It was now his responsibility to make sure he was as protected as possible. And Marius was right -- if Devyn didn’t see them wearing armor, he wouldn’t even stop to think about it.
He would have to apologize later, but for now it was important they got ready as much as possible.
“Once you are done with helping Dr. Eld with those, would you assist me with mine as well, Marius?” Lucien requested, selecting his own armor to start preparing.

“I can,” Marius said. He took a few extra seconds to make sure that the greaves were on tight enough that they wouldn’t shift, but loose enough that they wouldn’t bite into him uncomfortably or slow him down.
He could have stayed on the ground and waited for Lucien to come over so he didn’t have to move, but it was worth the extra effort to push himself to his feet so he could stand in front of Madison.
He’d see the way his hands shook, he saw the way he shifted nervously and seemed like he was fumbling with everything. He took both of his hands in his own and looked up at him intently for a few seconds.
Then, he released his hands and stood on his tiptoes so he could wrap his arms around Madison’s shoulders. He hugged him lightly and said softly into his ear, “You’ll be okay. I’m sure this is just a lot of over preparing. Sorry you got in with a bunch of worrywarts.”
Only, he wasn’t sorry. This was the practical thing.
Devyn wasn’t acting rashly, he was just doing what he needed to–and that meant dropping everything to come to Percy. Probably like how Madison had also dropped everything so he could be at the Hall as soon as possible, too.
He knew Madison wasn’t mad at him, or Devyn, or any of them. He suspected, though he wouldn’t say it, that he was just scared. And very bad at processing it.
“Do you want a good luck charm? I’ll give you one of mine.”

As soon as Marius stood up to take hold of Madison’s hands, Lucien very nonchalantly turned away to give them some privacy. Lucien likely didn’t expect Madison to appreciate being watched when he was clearly not feeling that wonderful about everything. Madison stared at Marius with confusion and concern when he’d taken hold of his hands, but then sucked in a breath to tense when arms went around his shoulders. “ Of course I’ll be okay,” he huffed and clicked his tongue to the roof of his mouth in protest. After a few moments he eventually put his arms around Marius in return, but he made sure it looked very reluctant. In case Lucien turned around. “You carry around good luck charms?” he snorted, trying not to sound touched by the offer. Not while they were in mixed company. “Sure, it couldn’t hurt,” he shrugged, although as reluctant as he tried to make it seem like he was hugging Marius back, he certainly didn’t seem to want to release him so soon. He should have said goodbye to Atrius and Virgil. Not that he expected anything to happen to him! He was just with a bunch of worrywarts and over thinking things. But he hadn’t gone into actual combat without Virgil by his side before.

Marius did not release Madison, because even if he acted like he didn’t need the hug, Marius still wanted him to take a moment and know that he was appreciated and needed.
“Of course I carry around good luck charms. And they never let me down, that’s why things always work out for me.”
Marius’ superstitious nature was always difficult to predict, partly because much of Villefort’s lore and legends were not well known outside of himself and the surviving villagers. Sometimes he was more or less honest about such beliefs, because even if he understood that practically speaking, many superstitions were just that, there was always the worry of what if on his mind.
It was easier to fall back on what he knew when in the face of so much that was still unknown, and even if they didn’t bring him luck, they still brought him comfort. They were pieces of his home and reminders of where he’d come from.
“Here,” he said, and only released Madison after another moment so he could pull a necklace from under his shirt. The pendant hanging at end of the dark cord was clearly old; it was faintly yellowed with age and had old chips. It had been cracked and repaired at least once. A bird skull had been carved from bone and fixed atop an iridescent shell; the shell had been carved into the body of an insect with slightly outstretched wings, and the skull had been fixed in place with two amber colored gemstones for the eyes. The shattered remnants of an old heatstone, they were faintly warm to the touch on their own. Two small feathers dangled beneath the pendant and were practically petrified, themselves. A single, somewhat foggy, clear gemstone was fixed between them.
Marius held the dark cord up and draped it over Madison’s neck.
He said nothing of its importance or legacy but it was clearly one of his treasures.
“Let me tuck it under your shirt. It’ll be safer there, underneath this armor.” He kissed the front of the pendant instinctively before he posed it to slip under the fabric of Madison’s shirt.
“There, now you’ll be safe. And any worries you have will flow out of your heart and into the gemstone, and when it’s foggy and dark, we’ll smash it and get a new one. That’s how they work. I’ll make you one to keep, when I get the right materials. It’ll help.”

Madison couldn’t say if he was superstitious or not. If he was, he had his own quirks and thoughts that followed him from when he was young. Nothing that he cared to share or make a big deal about. But Marius giving him his necklace to wear was too sweet of a gesture for him to ignore or make any comments about. Instead, he just watched as Marius removed it from his own neck, and then ducked his head a little when it was put over his. It was a beautiful, old necklace and pendant, and he sighed out some of the tension he’d had once it was under his shirt. For his own good luck, he took advantage of their proximity, and Lucien looking away, so he could press a kiss on Marius’s forehead. “Alright. I’ll make sure to bring this back,” he promised. Reluctantly, he let go of Marius so he could go help Lucien or whatever he was going to do. Madison placed a hand over his chest to verify where the pendant was and then sighed. He would be glad once all this was over with.
