Follows Requesting Backup

There were no sound of footsteps down the hall. Wearing no human footwear meant not clacking and clomping around. There was no knock on the door either, and when it was pushed open there was a startled squeak of distress from a young blond boy that Lucien did not know. He was sitting on the floor next to a sickly pale black haired teen.

“Marius,” Lucien greeted, his voice polite and proper but there was a sense of urgency to it. He stepped forward into Devyn’s room and crouched down on one knee in front of the young men.

“My name is Lucien. I am Alastor’s bonded Mauvian. Can you tell me what’s happening with Sessrumnir? I was with the Council when Mr. Lukas passed along the message.”

Celyn stared in shock, and, embarrassingly, had shrunk down to hide against Marius from the strange, large cat man. He was a cat, right? He had ears and a very fluffy looking tail that twitched a bit as he knelt in front of them.

But he was talking to Marius, so Celyn mumbled an apology for getting into Marius’ space, and sat himself back up. Just… he made sure he was as small as possible.

Marius was used to people knowing his name, but this was almost too much. He’d picked his head up so quickly when the door opened and his head was swimming again. At first he thought he was imagining the ears and tail, but when he blinked and they were still there, he forced his eyes to the man’s face.

He hadn’t heard of Lucien.

So this was a horrible first impression for someone who sounded important to Devyn.

Lukas wouldn’t have let just anyone slip back here, so despite the difficulties in trusting strangers, Marius pushed aside his reservations. He pushed himself away from the wall so he could sit up straight, and without the strength to do it, he still willed himself to appear more put together than he felt.

Marius didn’t try to push Celyn aside or scold him for wanting to hide or try to stay close; he wasn’t in any state to even think of such trivialities. And this all must have been very new and frightening to Celyn. Marius couldn’t blame him. Maybe they’d be able to talk more and he could apologize properly, when Percy wasn’t in so much danger.

“Men in masks and black outfits broke in. They wanted information and they were threatening us to try and force his compliance. Percy told us to run so we did, but they attacked him. They need him alive but I don’t know for how long.”

He forced the words from his lips. It was no small effort to get out full sentences quickly, audibly, but he was desperate for someone to do something. Marius was unwilling to let any sort of exhaustion claim him; he was stubborn enough that he’d decided his break was over. If there was any more he could do, he was ready.

“They did something to Princess, he can’t use her. And he said something felt wrong when he powered up, he said there was a weird energy. They found him right after, like they were waiting for him to do that. His Council thinks they’re students who were expelled.”

Cold eyes narrowed as Marius spoke, jaw tense. It was clear that Lucien was absorbing everything he was being told and processing it -- and every possible outcome.

“Very well,” he nodded politely and returned to his feet. He held a hand to Marius and the other teenager to help them up, although he looked like he was purposefully avoiding looking directly at them to allow them whatever pride they needed to maintain on their own. He understood, after all. If he was feeling his worst, he would want to get back on his own feet when in the presence of someone he did not know.

“We shall return to the lobby for now. There will be better means of accommodation. Food. Medical attention. I have been informed that Dr. Madison Eld has been summoned from Arista. Unfortunately, I will need a little more time to get a message to Devyn.”

For Lucien, there was a lot for him to sort through. The anger he felt at Alastor being used against his will. More anger felt at the circumstances surrounding his will being stolen and the atrocities that occurred to force the hand of the young man in front of him.

There was also guilt at not being there. His duty as a Mauvian often took him far away, but despite the attempts made by others to separate him from Alastor, he was always drawn back by the unbreakable bond he’d unintentionally developed.

“Percy is strong and will survive this. He has saved Devyn from numerous dangers. We will do the same for him,” he reassured the boys, turning once he was sure they were steady on their feet, and only offering assistance if it seemed like it was wanted, rather than needed.

So, the cat was real? Oh… Mauvian. He couldn’t remember if he’d heard that term before. It seemed like it was beyond his scope of study and understanding. Maybe he just needed to read more.

Marius seemed as though he trusted this man, so Celyn sat up a little more when Marius did, even if he wasn’t sure what to think. He didn’t want to be left behind in this windowless room, and this man -- Lucien -- seemed to know what he was talking about. He seemed a bit cold but also polite.

Hesitantly, Celyn took the man’s hand when he offered it to help him stand, but he remained no more than a foot away from Marius. Not just because he didn’t want to be left behind, but because he wasn’t sure Marius would actually accept the help.

“Those were the rumors. There were requests for information that was rejected in the past few months, but I… don’t know who sent the requests,” he mumbled sheepishly, still hiding a bit behind Marius.

Marius' expression flashed briefly when Madison was mentioned and he might have sighed a silent expletive under his breath. Certainly not the influence of Percy or Devyn, he'd just been spending too much time with the doctor, himself.

Pride was one thing, but Marius was not ashamed of his sickness. He carried it like a badge in most cases. It was different when he wanted to be pitied, when he wanted to sucker up to someone and give them the impression of a poor, sickly boy from Villefort. He was more than that. He just didn't want everyone to know it.

He didn't want Lucien to see him as a liability, a weakness. It was the only reason he was working so hard to push past his body's limitations.

Marius accepted his hand. He had a strong grip and he steadied himself immediately. At some point he'd swallowed the gum he'd been chewing on, and he set the emptied mug on the nearest solid surface before he righted himself.

He didn't know anything about Mauvains, or bonds, but if he could get a message to Devyn that was the most important thing. He didn't know what Lucien knew or felt, but then he was used to the cold professionalism of many of Alastor's diplomats so his mannerisms weren't so unnerving.

"Do you know what information they were requesting?" he asked Celyn, but had little hope that he'd have been exposed to that much information. He pulled open the heavy door of Devyn's room for the other two, maybe just to show that he wasn't so weak. Though, he really should be saving his energy if Madison was on the way. He held the door with his foot and rubbed at his face to try and bring some color back to them. He wanted Celyn's answer, but thoughts wouldn't stop churning in his head so he also asked Lucien, "How long do you think it'll take you to reach him?"

“I have a device that I can calibrate to reach him quickly. Depending on where he is, based on his schedule and where he should be located, he should receive the message within twenty to thirty minutes of sending it out. How long it takes him to get back will depend on what means he obtains to return,” Lucien explained as he stepped through the opened door with a nod of thanks. He didn’t wait for the two boys to follow him, instead taking strides down the hall. They were in a time crunch, after all.

“He will be able to send back a message so we can prepare for his return. I expect it to be within a couple hours, should everything proceed smoothly.”

Devyn was out on his peace keeping mission that he apparently tasked himself with after the issues with Villefort. Lucien was still in the process of learning about what happened, so did his best to withhold judgment from something he didn’t fully understand.

However, he respected Devyn and Percy’s decisions. If they decided they wanted to follow through with adopting Marius, whether it was to help smooth things over or because they really cared about him, Lucien would treat him as one of his own.

Celyn left the room last, but once again didn’t stray from Marius. He couldn’t help but look around at the tapestries and stonework and lack of windows. Where were they? Even Sessrumnir had windows, even though they were heavily reinforced.

“N-no,” he sniffled a little when Marius asked what information was being requested. He’d put his gum back in the wrapper and in his pocket, not wanting to leave trash anywhere.

“I’m sorry.” He knew he was pretty useless, and couldn’t even answer the basic questions. He just hoped they’d figure out a way to help and that Percy would be okay.

Wow, where was this guy when they were working on Villefort. Marius didn’t ask. He couldn’t quite place the emotion he was getting from Lucien but he wasn’t going to make any judgment calls. This was an abnormal, stressful situation.

And Lucien’s legs were so long.

Marius was already dreading the hurried trip back to the lobby but he pushed himself anyway. He didn’t want to fall too far behind Lucien.

“Is it too dangerous to send anyone from the Hall to Sessrumnir now?” he asked, but he could think of a dozen reasons why they shouldn’t. If they had only planned for Sessrumnir’s defenses then they might get desperate when another force showed up. Percy might get hurt. Or they might take him somewhere they couldn’t find him. They might hurt other people, or they might give up and kill him. “Mm. Never mind.”

Marius had to trust that Percy could buy enough time for someone to get there. Or had to hope that Percy’s Council could have gotten word out to his brother to come in.

Celyn looked shaken up, and Marius looked at him apologetically.

“You don’t have to apologize. It’s okay.” He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. “You’ll be safe here. And Percy will be fine. Do you want to go sit in the garden when we get up front or would you rather stay inside? You won’t have to be here long. Just until things calm down.” He probably didn’t want to be at Sessrumnir when Devyn showed up, anyway.

Since Marius seemed to figure out an answer for himself, Lucien didn’t respond. Instead it looked as though he pulled something out from nowhere and started tinkering with it as they walked. Or as he walked and the teenagers had to run every few steps to keep up. He wasn’t in the mood to waste any more time, so he would use the long walk as a chance to formulate his plan.

In his hand was a small mechanical bird that looked nearly lifelike. Except for the fact that it was fitted with some kind of synthetic material to protect its delicate gears and electrical circuits. This was clearly the device that Lucien was talking about, but how it worked, well… hopefully the intention to have it work like a real bird was obvious.

Oh boy, running. Celyn was already out of breath again as he shuffled to keep up. He felt sick with worry and everything still ached. It would probably be worse, later. But that was fine as long as Percy was okay.

He’d never met Devyn, but he’d heard stories. He’d also heard stories of Alastor. But he was more interested in other topics than the living history of different worlds.

Which was why he perked up a little when a garden was mentioned.

“Oh… would that be okay? To see the garden?” Celyn hoped he didn’t sound too interested. He was worried about Percy! But it wasn’t like he could really do anything. And if he was in the garden he could probably hide easier. As long as he wasn’t forgotten there… although he supposed there were worse things.

As they walked, Marius tried to sneak a few quick glances at the strange device Lucien was tinkering with. He kept his questions to himself for now; he didn’t want to distract him and he needed to save his breath. Though he suspected it would do little, Marius tried to smooth out his clothes and straighten his hair a bit as they walked.

“Yeah, I think so,” Marius answered. If Celyn had only ever been to Sessrumnir then maybe he’d appreciate some time in the sun. It was unlikely to be raining right now, and soft clouds to pepper the sky and soften the sun were expected.

“It should be really nice there. I haven’t seen any of those flowers on Sessrumnir, maybe they’ll be new to you. But it’s really pretty, and relaxing. You’re studying horticulture, aren’t you? I’ve seen you in class before.”

He could probably make sure Celyn had a book to take with him to the garden if he wanted to read up on the plants growing there. If things had been better, Marius might have even liked to talk with him about some things, but he already anticipated that Dr. Eld was going to take up a bit of time, and he’d be lucky if he escaped bedrest. But how was he supposed to sit still when Percy was in danger, what if there was something he could do to help?

He raised his elbow and coughed into it, trying very hard to silence it. It was wet and scratchy but it didn’t slow him down.

Lucien knew the way out, so he must have been close enough to Devyn to either know the path by heart or he was just very good at reading the small directions carved into the tapestries they passed. Marius didn’t think Lucien was even looking at them, which made it all the more likely that he really was who he said–and important enough to Devyn to be able to navigate the most sacred and well-guarded recesses of the Hall.

Lucien saw no point in proving his relationship with Devyn to anyone else. He was there the moment he’d awakened -- for that very purpose -- and he wished he could have been by his side for more of his life than he had been. Maybe one day he would settle there, once the politics of Mau no longer required his services as much.

He was quiet as they made their way to the lobby, nodding to the guards who he walked passed on the way in with or without their permission. If they wouldn’t let a full grown man through, then he would have just transformed into his Mauvian form, anyway. He doubted they could outrun him either way. Besides, if they didn’t already know him, then they were very new.

“Mr. Lukas, has lunch arrived?” he asked as he led the way through the lobby to where the main desk was set up.

“I intend to accompany Master Marius and his companion outside in the garden while I finish up my work. We can likely expect Mr. DeLunne’s arrival to be within the next few hours,” he confidently announced once he was close enough that his voice wouldn’t carry to anyone around them.

Celyn watched Marius with concern as he coughed and seemed to be in relatively rough condition. He knew only a little bit about his story. That he was orphaned and Percy and Devyn took him in, but not much more than that.

He felt his cheeks warm, flustered that Marius would pay attention to what he was studying, especially when there were so many other students.

“Oh… yeah,” he answered quietly, still trying to seem as small as possible now that he was around other people. “I know it’s probably not a really useful thing to study but… I really like it.” Definitely not as important and useful as other environmental sciences or politics or things of that nature, but he liked plants.

He stayed next to Marius and was tempted to rub his back in the hopes of him feeling better, but he didn’t want to touch him if it was unwanted.

In the light of the lobby, Marius looked worse. Now, he seemed like he’d settled into something like accepting it–or, maybe because there were so many dignitaries and important people around, it was just easy to slip back into that pathetic look he wore so well.

Though the architecture above them was somewhat eerie and unfriendly, there was too much color here to be totally unwelcoming. Someone had put a lot of work into making this place elegant and interesting, and maybe Celyn would recognize some of Percy’s paintings on the wall if he had any familiarity with his skill.

Marius rubbed at his face again in one last effort to give it some healthy color, and he was drawing in careful, precise breaths to keep from coughing out here.

“It’s a useful thing to study,” Marius countered, because he was studying it, too. “We should talk about it sometime. I’d be interested in some of your thoughts.” Marius struggled to socialize. It was difficult for him to have pointless conversations with strangers, but Lukas was looking at him with such a worried look that he felt it necessary to make a bit of extra effort for his sake and Celyn’s.

Lukas’s brows were knitted as he looked from Marius and Celyn to Lucien. “Yes, sir,” he answered, still getting used to Lucien’s manners. “Do you really think a few hours?” he sounded doubtful, but–

Actually, no. If it was for Percy’s sake, that made perfect sense.

He pulled a large picnic basket from behind the table. “I thought you might be planning on heading somewhere private but this was all I had to prepare for transport. I’m sorry.” He didn’t know why he felt so pressed to apologize; it was the same basket he’d have packed for Devyn and Percy, but it’s not like this was a date or a pleasant outing.

Lukas was visibly worried but doing his best to put on a friendly, easy-going expression. To anyone that knew him, it was easy to tell that he was probably out of his mind with concern, but he was very good at doing his job. “Is there anything I can get you?”

Once again, it seemed as though the answer was decided, so Lucien didn’t respond to Lukas about the timeframe he predicted. He could calibrate his device to shave a few more minutes off, but he didn’t want to compromise the integrity of it.

“A full report on everything that has happened during my absence,” he requested, but let out a huff knowing it was a large request. He only got the basics of it from the Council, and was still figuring things out. But this was more important.

“And a moment of rest for yourself, Mr. Lukas,” he added with a concerned glance, his voice a bit softer now.

He knew everyone close to Devyn and Percy must be worrying, but things would be figured out soon enough. There were problems with sending in a lot of people, because it could mean engaging in an act of war, even if it was to rescue someone taken hostage. The politics usually meant if Devyn acted on his own, their results would be better. In theory. But then again, that was also due to Lucien’s confidence in Devyn’s abilities.

“Thank you, this is more than acceptable,” he nodded politely and picked up the basket that Lukas made for them, and then turned towards the door.

“Come, we shall rejuvenate in the light of the sun.”

Celyn watched everyone with growing curiosity. He absolutely recognized some of Percy’s work, and was intrigued by the architecture. He was also surprised when Marius said his studies were useful, which was surprising because every time he looked over at Marius in class, he always looked like he was bored. But maybe he just had other things he would rather be thinking about. Or already knew everything being taught.

But he still nodded his head, trying not to seem too excited about the idea of talking to someone about plants.

He quietly followed Lucien and Marius, but once the doors were open--

Celyn had to lift his hand to shield his eyes from the light. He’d seen the sun before! In pictures and in simulations! Sometimes the clouds on Jupiter were thin enough for rays to come through. There were plenty of plants! So the sun had to reach them! But being so directly under a blue sky…

Not seeing rain or hearing thunder, but instead just… birds and animals and insects.

Oh… Celyn was going to have to try very hard not to cry. It was definitely an overwhelming experience that he wasn’t quite prepared for.

Lukas nodded with the request, but not before exchanging a silent glance with Marius. It was unlikely that he was going to take a break for himself but he smiled politely and waved to the three as they departed.

Truthfully, Marius was not looking forward to going outside. The fresh air was mostly good for him, but the garden could be overwhelming. He’d been warned about spending too much time there but he kept it to himself. He probably could have made some excuse to go off and see what the Council was doing, or give them an update, or something, but…

What could they do that Devyn couldn’t?

Lukas had slid something across the counter for Marius, which he accepted with a small nod of thanks. It disappeared in his sleeve, only to reappear when they were out and under the sun.

He didn’t know if he would rejuvenate out there, but he could at least stop from withering. Poor Celyn looked like his world was upside down, so Marius opened the teal parasol off to the side and rested it on his shoulder. Celyn hadn’t had a problem being close before, and Marius hoped it wouldn’t be much different now. He only had one parasol, after all.

“Is it too bright? Don’t strain your eyes,” he cautioned. It was warmer outside, but comfortably so and in stark difference to the chill of the hallways. He could have fallen asleep out here with little effort. He had too much adrenaline to let himself rest peacefully, though. He wanted to go back and help Percy, no matter how useless he’d have been. He hated having to trust others to do the right thing, but given the circumstances–and given who he knew at the Hall and how hard they’d worked–he knew they would treat this with the utmost care and concern.

He trailed after Lucien cautiously. Lukas had spoken to him with respect and hadn’t tried to keep Marius away from him, but…

Marius didn’t know if he was getting the real story behind Villefort, or the public version. It was probably best to be careful around him no matter what. Marius was not the one who designed the lie, but he maintained it. He respected it. Everyone was committed to it and he wasn’t going to sabotage their efforts because he thought they were being too good for him. For as long as Celyn was around he didn’t have to worry about it.

He just had to worry about Percy, and whatever Devyn was going to put himself through to be here for him.

Lucien had wasted no time in moving out into the sunlight in search of a nice, shady spot near the garden. He didn’t go into the garden itself -- there were too many things that could get stuck to his fur -- but there was a nice set of trees nearby, and a patch of grass that looked like it had been used for picnicking before.

Not that this was any time to have a picnic when Percy was in danger, but there was nothing useful they could do until Devyn got back. If they tried anything now, they would likely get caught up in whatever was going on, and could probably get hurt or worse.

“Is it too bright?” Lucien repeated Marius’s question, but with more curiosity in his voice. “Are you not used to the sunlight? Forgive me, we have not yet been acquainted,” he prompted, hoping the young man would know to share his name.

Celyn shielded his eyes with both hands, and then glanced up when under the shade of the parasol. Oh… that was very nice and made things more tolerable.

“Thank you,” he said with a somewhat distressed expression. Maybe he really was better off staying at Sessrumnir. The light was nice, but it was much too bright.

“Oh. Celyn,” he introduced to Lucien, his face flushing when he realized he hadn’t said his name yet. He opened his mouth to say more, maybe about how he knew Percy, or that his Grandfather was on the Council, since that was basically the most important information about his life, but…

The stress of not knowing what was going on, and being worried about Percy was quickly creeping up on him. Sure, he was distracted for a bit in a new place, but he was still in pain and worried and he could just blame the sun for the tears in his eyes. Maybe the exposure to new pollen.

“Percy will be okay, won’t he? Will Devyn really be able to help? What if--”

What if he didn’t get there in time…?

Kyuseisha no Hikari
PostPosted: Mon Apr 22, 2024 9:03 pm

When Lucien seemed like he’d picked a spot for them to wait, Marius wasted little time in taking a seat. He waited until Celyn moved with him so he didn’t lose the extra shade of the parasol, but when they were settled on the ground he reached into a pocket and pulled out a handkerchief.

It was spotless–clean, and unused and one of several that he carried around in case Percy was moved to tears throughout the day.

“Percy will be okay,” he reassured. “He’s very strong, and very smart. I’m sure he’s doing what he can to buy time until someone can come help him. He might look weak, but he’s very strong, and very brave.”

Marius sounded absolutely convinced of these words, and he spoke in a gentle, calming voice, like he had a lot of experience consoling and comforting others.

“And there’s really nothing Devyn can’t do. He’s the strongest man I know. He’d do anything for Percy. So as soon as he knows something’s wrong, he’ll be on his way to help. You don’t have anything to be afraid of. I’ve been around them a bit when there was trouble. So I know this is probably very new and scary, and the waiting is almost the worst part because you don’t know what’s going to happen. But I already know how this is going to end, so you can relax a little bit. Devyn will be here soon, and he’ll find Percy, and get him away from all of those people. And then they’ll make sure that this doesn’t happen again, so no one ever has to be afraid while they’re at Sessrumnir.”

Celyn nodded once more to Marius. He sounded so confident and sure about Percy and Devyn that he couldn’t help but believe him. He kept his eyes shielded, even under the parasol, which he was incredibly grateful for.

Just as much as he was grateful for Marius keeping him company when he could have easily just left him in the hall at Sessrumnir for slowing him down. Celyn wouldn’t have blamed him. He didn’t know him very well. Or at all. He was just another student there, and one that wasn’t allowed to do much outside of classes, so it wasn’t as though he would have been able to hang out with Marius or anyone else for that matter.

“Thank you,” he said quietly. He took the offered handkerchief and dabbed at his eyes under his glasses. It was embarrassing to get weepy so easily. He wanted to ask Marius if he was feeling any better, but he still remembered how quickly Marius had waved him off before. He doubted he would appreciate being fussed over. So Celyn shut his mouth before he could make a bigger fool of himself.

While he’d nodded to acknowledge Celyn’s introduction, there wasn’t much else for him to say at the moment. Lucien set down the picnic basket and made sure it was within reach of the two teenagers, but he quickly went back to work on his little device. He had a long pin-like instrument that he was using to poke and prod different pieces. He opened one part, then closed it, and then adjusted something else.

He was clearly focused on getting this message sent out as quickly as possible, and while the boys had their quiet conversation in the shade, he tested the functionality of the little mechanical bird by letting it hover off his hand.

“It’s ready,” he announced, and held the bird out for both Celyn and Marius to see. It was a small sparrow-like bird. Lifelike in every way except that it was made with synthetic materials. On the bird’s chest was a floral mandala -- Alastor’s symbol. While they were busy looking at it, he took another small mechanical piece and clipped it to his ear.

“This will allow me to temporarily communicate with Devyn once it arrives at his location. At least in theory. I’ve placed a note inside as well, just in case we are unable to speak. He would be able to send it back with a note as well, if something damaged the system. Unfortunately, this is a prototype. I have not had the chance to do additional testing.”
