“I haven’t had the chance to clean up much,” Rose said once they arrived.
Her Wonder appeared as she’d described it before: a little cottage in a glen. The lower floor consisted of a single room, which seemed to function as both a living and cooking area. There was a wide stone hearth and various pieces of wooden furniture. A wooden staircase rose to the floor above, which boasted only a single bedroom. The stairs themselves were in poor shape, with several sagging or splintered boards and a railing that seemed half disintegrated. Fortunately Rose hadn’t needed to brave them to find her ring.
Most of the windows were broken. A thick layer of dust covered most surfaces. The wood floors were scratched and gouged and littered with all sorts of debris. Outside one could see some of Lysithea’s natural beauty, with a small stream running near the cottage—or it would have been a stream if there were currently any water in it. At the moment, it seemed a bit sad and empty.
“There aren’t many places to look,” Rose continued. “I’m actually surprised I didn’t notice the Code piece last time I was here. I didn’t see it anywhere down here, and… well, I’m not sure how I could miss it.”

It was adorable. So different than her own large…manor? Building? Castle? She wasn’t really sure as she hadn’t yet gone outside, but this was different than Almere’s inn as well. But it…was adorable. And absolutely fit Rose’s aesthetic.
“It’s lovely.” Or…would have. It would be when they fixed the Code piece, she was sure of it. They just had to get everything back to the way that it was supposed to be. They could do it.
“We’ll bring it back to the way it’s supposed to be. Both with the Code piece and with elbow grease!”
It was so much fun working together to make something better. To make it more beautiful.
“There were sparkles leading me towards mine. See if you see anything twinkling!”

"Aww, I love this," said Almere, looking around. If they could clean Mechelen's wonder up into a place for grand balls, then this was the kind of place that would be perfect for the coziest sleepovers, or maybe even some kind of camping adventure. She thought she saw some trees through the broken windows. "Look in the chimney?" she said, chewing on the inside of her cheeks. That was the first place she saw in the room that wasn't immediately visible. Of course, they could also go up the stirs. "Or, no, that's a better idea," she said, as Mechelen spoke. "Follow your heart. Follow the sparkles." It was the strategy that had worked for both her and Mechelen, and it seemed like the perfect, magical way to find a secret in a place like this.

Rose tried Almere’s initial suggestion first, just to be sure, peering up the chimney and seeing nothing but darkness.
She wasn’t too worried. Sure, she felt a little bad that her Wonder was in such a state, but the Code had seemed confident when they’d been on the moon, so she didn’t let herself focus on the negatives. She’d clean this place up as soon as she could—by herself, and with friends. She knew it was possible that these places could return to their former glory, even if she hadn’t seen too many of them herself. Even her sad little cottage must have been cute a long time ago, probably very homey and comfortable.
“Alright,” she said, finding a spot in the middle of the ground floor to try finding some sort of path or sparkles. “Let’s see what we can find.”
Rose didn’t see any sparkles, just specks of dust dancing in the air. She didn’t give up, though. She had magic that came to her through the Code, so she focused on that, really tried to feel it—the way it flowed through her, the way it filled her, even though she couldn’t use real magic yet.
She felt something sort of like an awareness, something at the back of her mind or on the tip of her tongue. She followed the feeling to a spot on the floor tucked in a shadowy corner. There were some shredded fibers there, like maybe there’d once been some sort of carpet or rug; they were easy to brush off, and when she did she found what looked like a trap door.
“Oh, I didn’t notice this last time,” she said.
The handle was sunk into the wood so it sat flush against it, but she fished it out of the divot that housed it and gave it a tug. At first, it didn’t seem like the little trap door would open, but with a groan and a shower of dust it eventually gave way.
“It’s dark, but… I think there’s a very faint light down there.”

Mechelen gave a soft gasp. “Secret tunnel!” The words escaped her before she could really stop them, but it was the truth! This…was cool! Maybe Rose kept secret things hidden here in the past, or…or maybe it was some kind of a root cellar…that made more sense but. “We’re right behind you, Rose. You’re absolutely not alone in this!”
Her voice was encouraging and she couldn’t stop the utter excitement in her voice. It felt good, the resonating. The feeling your Wonder heal a little. Or…whatever had happened. And she was so excited for Rose to experience it as well.
“I have a flashlight if you want to use it?” It wasn’t a big one, but she pulled it out of subspace, holding it out to her friend.

"This is so much more exciting than the chimney," said Almere, skipping up behind Rose with almost as much of a spring in her step as she'd had when she'd first found the spoon that turned her into a Page. Nothing screamed fantasy adventure like a secret passage. "Your Wonder is amazing, Rose," she said, stepping up so that she could look down into the tunnel and glimpse the sparkle of light that Rose was talking about. "That looks like the right color. I think you're on to something." She didn't have any flashlights, but she was here for emotional support.

Rose took the flashlight from Mechelen with a grateful smile. She turned it on and pointed the light downward. A set of wooden stairs descended from the opening left by the trap door. A few were splintered in spots. One or two looked like they might have gone missing. Another had clearly split through.
“Be careful, the stairs aren’t in great shape,” she said.
She went first, taking the stairs one at a time. If there’d once been a railing to hold onto, it no longer existed. Fortunately the way down wasn’t long. Rose stepped onto a rough stone floor. She cast the flashlight around, expecting a tunnel that stretched to some other secret place, but all they came to was a single room. The walls were stone and might have once been lined with shelves, many of which had fallen and now laid in piles of debris.
“I think it’s a cellar,” she said.
Though the floor was littered with shards of splintered wood and shattered glass, whatever used to be stored here was long gone.
But drifting erratically among the wreckage was the Code piece, small and glowing dimly in the dark.

If Mechelen hadn’t been so excited for secret tunnels, she might have realized that a cellar really did make more sense. It was a cottage, so obviously there would be a cellar, a place for storing plants and preserves…a place that was nice and cool. Really, it was a wonderful place to keep a Code piece safe, and she was so excited to see it glowing softly. “I love this…when things get settled, we should come up here and really clean it up…can you imagine the tea parties we could have here? This is just such cottagecore and I love it…”
Her eyes were darting around and she smiled at Rose. “You’ve got this! We’re right here with you, Rose.”

Okay, it was a cellar, but that didn't mean it wasn't a secret. Especially if the Code piece was down here, which it was. In the other Wonder, the Code piece had been carefully put into ornate pieces of art, so anything that held something as powerful as that had to be special. Even if it was a little musty. Maybe what made it special was one of the things that had been destroyed? The code piece looked a little confused, just floating around like that. Rose was here now, though, so that meant that it would be okay. "You found it," said Almere. She dropped down, glad she was wearing boots that would protect her from most of what was on the floor. "I think it's going to be so happy to see you," she said.

Rose smiled gratefully, pleased by the idea of coming back sometime to clean things up a bit. She knew she should have already done a bit of that on her own and felt bad that she hadn’t. Seeing both Almere’s and Mechelen’s Wonders had inspired her to tend to hers more often from here on out.
“Alright, let’s see what I can do,” she said, passing the flashlight back to Mechelen for the time being, figuring it might help her concentrate more if she had her hands free.
“Don’t feel like you guys have to worry about any of this,” she added, motioning around to all the wreckage. “If you want to take it easy while I do this, you definitely deserve it.”
She didn’t know what the significance of her Wonder was, or why the Code piece was roaming free down here in the cellar, but she figured it was secure enough and she wasn’t getting any bad vibes about this place. Rose took a breath and let it out to calm herself, then closed her eyes and focused on her connection with the Code.
It was comforting, almost, to know that it was there. Warm. And hers. This power had been gifted to her by… something. Fate, or birthright. Rose wasn’t always confident about her ability to see things through, but she was grateful for the opportunity. Especially here, even if it was a strange, unknown place, she got the feeling that she belonged.
Images flashed through her mind’s eye too quickly for her to piece enough of them together to make much sense of what she was seeing, but among them she noticed a wooden fence and grass swaying in the breeze. She felt something soft beneath her palm, heard the snuffle of a great creature, and saw the gleam of a majestic horn. For a moment, she saw the cottage as it had once been—warm and quaint, with forest surrounding it on three sides and a wide field stretched before it.
Then the vision was gone. She had no idea how much time had passed. Rose opened her eyes and the cottage was a mess again, but the Code had come to rest over what remained of a rather bland looking pedestal.
“That wasn’t so bad,” Rose announced.
