It had been a while since Siel had performed for a packed tavern. He’d certainly visited a few during his time on Pale’iko, but they’d been primarily Kahikina dives with little in the way of familiar songs and rhythms. While he’d enjoyed himself there was just something nice about hearing tried and true tunes, even if they were Belrean.
The bard played long into the night and since he’d already cleared it with his partner, Siel decided to stay for a little ‘self-care time’. It wasn’t as if he didn’t enjoy his family, or his sensational girlfriend, he just needed a little bit of ‘Siel’ time before he could go back to being ‘dad’ and ‘sweetheart’. Since most of his close friends were still in Matori, and his siblings weren’t in this city, Siel had chosen to party with a few new friends he’d made at the tavern; Idunna and Roque.
Idunna was an older Geian woman whose voice was as deep as it was raunchy. It had been comical when she’d told Siel she played the flute, but after picking up the delicate instrument it had been obvious she was an old pro. And then there was Roque. Siel wasn’t quite sure what their story was; they didn’t speak much and something about the look in their eye told him not to ask. Still, they’d been one of the first to offer Siel a spot in the lineup during his stay and when the Lightning chose to smile it was always genuine.
By that point the trio was three sheets to the wind and joining with the entirety of the tavern as they sang along with some old shanty. He had one arm slung around Idunna’s shoulder, who eagerly wrapped her own around his and Roque – well, they’d been able to avoid it at first but by the time their cheeks warmed they were singing right along.
Maybe they should have stopped there, but when they’d started playing Truth or Dare it spelled disaster for everyone. First had been Idunna, who took on the dare to play her flute by farting into it. That one had been Siel’s idea and much to his astonishment she’d managed to puff out a few notes. Then came Roque’s turn. They’d chosen truth, to which Idunna had asked if Roque was single. When they’d hesitated on answering she’d waggled her brows, causing Siel to snort out a laugh so hard liquor nearly poured out of his nose. Roque had just blushed and politely answered ‘yes’.
Then came Siel’s turn.
“Truth or Dare?” Idunna slurred.
“Daaaarrreeee.” Siel drug the word out with a cocky grin.
“I dare you to go up and sing a song,” Roque started, before flashing a lopsided grin of their own. “,- in Sautian. You said one of your fathers was born there, right? Should be easy.”
Siel scrunched his face and held up a hand. “Oh that’s such crap, Roque.” The amount of time he’d spent in Sauti over the course of his life could be counted on one hand. Callum hadn’t even spoken that much Sautian around them and had chosen the common tongue instead. How was he supposed to-? “No, y’know what, hope you like ballads.” He pointed at Roque and stood.
The entirety of his walk toward the stage was nothing short of a miracle. In his mind he looked majestic; the picture of a man walking into battle. In truth the hybrid was a stumbling mess and very nearly knocked over a table before making his way to the stage. When he got there he waited for the current group to finish their set before taking his spot.
In Siel’s mind his song made perfect sense. He thought he was singing about a woman who yearned for her husband to come home, but in reality his words were so slurred no one could quite make out if it was another language or just a garbled mess. Either way it earned more than a few chuckles, and Idunna was standing throughout the performance. She held her stein up so she could sway side to side, muttering something to Roque at one point that made them snort. Anyone actually familiar with Sautian would have understood Siel to be singing about a potato wishing for her lover to return and not a wife. And the ‘love’ he tried to convey was a sense of intestinal distress.
And all, of course, was made all the sweeter by the fact Siel was barely a passable singer. His talent clearly laid with instruments, and not his voice.
