"Ah, hells! Ya can take care of it, Pel!" Yarrow cried out as he pushed past Pel, shoving her into the floor of the bakery and bolting out into the street. The idiot had been bothering her and she had raised her hands to only help break a beautiful display piece that was on the table in the bakery. And now here she was simply staring at it, a flurry of curses on her lips as she debated on running out as well or standing her ground while waiting on the fresh bread she had ordered. They rarely got such goods on the ship and after winning some spare coin in that race she had wanted a treat. Curse Yarrow for following her and making a mess of things!

Harika had been helping out in the bakery for the day, the seamstress having finished up her fashion projects for the time being, and while the morning crowd was busy as usual she had not been expecting some sailors in the shop. The pair of boys seemed a bit rougher around the edges, but when the one with short hair pulled out coin for some bread she had accepted. "I'll be right back." And now there was a crashing noise? Harika let out a sigh as she calmed herself and walked towards the front. Only one boy remained while it looked like the other had run off and the frustrated expression on the one who had placed the order made her pause. Maybe it was best to not make a big deal out of it?

"Are you alright?" Harika asked instead, her gaze moving slowly from the broken display piece back towards the boy.

Ah shite. So much for running away then. “I’m fine. That’s not though.” Pel gestured towards the broken display piece before looking back up towards the woman who had caught her. She looked a bit less like what Pel had expected of someone at a bakery, that was for sure. That attire looked a bit too fancy and that hair was so pink! Definitely not a local then, unless she dyed her hair or something like that. “How much?” She would definitely cuff Yarrow for this mess, that was for certain. And there was no way in the seven hells that she would be sharing this bread either, not when he ran away like some yellow belly!

“Well, that’s a relief.” Harika smiled despite the rough appearance of the boy as she tried not to look over him. Despite the baggy clothing and disheveled hair there was something…well those cheekbones and the tilt of the eyes could be a bit feminine, but she wouldn’t dwell on it unless the stranger said otherwise. “And I can’t really place a price on something handmade. I suppose it’ll just need to be replaced, good thing autumn is almost here so I can swap out decorations.” She mused again, going back towards the counter to work on packing up the bread. “Though if you don’t mind sweeping up the pieces I would appreciate it.”

“I see.” Pel bit her bottom lip, her gaze darting around the shop to make certain that there weren’t any suspicious customers loitering around. “Where’s a broom?” If she didn’t have to pay for it then that was great, so why not clean up? It was the least she could do and then she could really cuff Yarrow for being an idiot later. Not like she had much else to do in town either, not when she didn’t really like passing time like most of the crew who lingered around the more entertaining areas of the city.

Harika couldn’t help feeling a bit intrigued. He looked a bit rough around the edges but at least he was willing to stay around and clean up. Though I suppose partly that’s because I’m holding his bread hostage. He seemed to need it as well, considering how thin he looked like a strong wind would blow him over. But then when Harika watched him grabbing the broom, the muscles in his arms showing as he started sweeping up the mess, she realized that he was a bit tougher than he appeared. “You know, I could use some help cleaning up the whole store front. We didn’t get a helper in today, so it’s been a bit busy with everything going on. I could work on replacing the decorations if you wipe down the tables and clean the windows for me.” She paused, studying the packaged bread and then glancing back towards the boy. “I could toss in some extra sweets as payment.”

“You do know I broke yer display piece, right?” Pel replied, frowning at the offer. What was the catch? Did the woman really think that she was that easy? But the idea of more sweets from the bakery, Pel’s gaze roaming over the display, did make her pause. It all looked so good and better than half of the sweets that she had eaten ever since leaving the entertainment house. Even then she barely got anything that looked like the things in that display unless her mother’s customers gifted her with luxurious chocolates or the like. “So who says I won’t break anything else?”

“Just a hunch, especially considering that you didn’t run out of the store like the other boy.” Harika shrugged lightly, not even seeming to care that it was the boy’s companion who had bolted in the first place. “But if you’re not interested then it’s okay. I’ll manage somehow.” She went to pick up a rag and began to wipe up the counter, avoiding the packaged bread that she had set on the corner for the boy’s order. “It’ll just be a couple of coins once you’re done with that mess and you can take the bread.”

“I didn’t say I wouldn’t.” Pel protested after a moment, realizing that if she didn’t act soon the chance might just sweep away. “Do I get anythin’ from there?” She nodded towards the display which was filled with a variety of goods. Was that a chocolate tart with some sort of marshmallow or something drizzled across it? Decorated pies, cookies shaped like duruf and basic ones with chocolate chips, tarts with fresh fruits layered across and even little cakes with chocolates too? Dammit! It all looked so good even if it was disgustingly sweet compared to her normal stale and salty fare even Pel couldn’t deny she was tempted. Maybe she could have Yarrow break things more often if it meant she could get more chances like this.

“Whatever you’d like. I’ll toss in a bag of rolls as well, if you don’t mind that they were from yesterday’s batch.” Normally she would sell them at a discount or leave them for those in need, but this seemed fitting for today. The boy almost looked like he was about to drool as he looked over the display, that much was enough for Harika to want to offer more food…as long as he worked a bit for it. “You’d just need to clean up the shop a bit, that’s all.”

Pel’s fingers tightened on the broom. Would it really be alright for her to take this offer? Her violet gaze darted around before she finally gave a nod. Screw it. Her stomach felt so empty and those baked goods looked delicious. Just a fruit tart would be a treat in itself, the fresh fruits something else she usually fought over with the rest of the crew when they were out at sea for so long. There was just something about a strawberry that island fruit couldn’t quite beat. Not that she didn’t enjoy islander fare, but when you had chocolate covered strawberries before and couldn’t normally get them…talk about mouthwatering. “I’ll clean and I won’t break anything else. Just save that tart and some strawberries for me.”

“Deal.” Harika left the rag on the counter for the boy and moved to place some chocolate covered strawberries in a box with a fruit tart in another. She even slipped in a cookie with the strawberries before tying the string around the boxes. “You know if you do a good job, I could always put in a word with the owner for a part-timer.” Hopefully that would be okay with Aurick, even if it was just on occasion. They were doing well and Harika wouldn’t mind contributing with her funds as a seamstress. She’d been getting quite a few commissions as of late, especially since her costumes were used by the local theater company now. So surely she could help with this. “I would just need your name and such.”

Pel was picking up more of the broken pieces when the woman made the offer. The girl’s fingers instantly froze, her hand hovering before she tossed the pieces of the broken display into the dustpan. “I appreciate it, but I’m not from ‘ere and already committed to workin’ elsewhere.” She offered the woman a small smile. “Maybe I can stop in again, but it won’t be often. Still, I’ll do my best to earn what you gave me so I ‘ppreciate it.” She had been stuck on the Wailing Wraith for so long that Pel had never imagined a life outside of the ocean. What would it be like to wake up every day in a familiar spot, having a room to herself where she could sleep in peace and going to work at a place like this? If only. A soft sigh nearly escaped her lips before she shook her head. “Anyways, this is a nice piece. You made it, eh? Interestin’.” Anything to turn the topic away from her and her desperation, the thought of a life in a place like this making the back of her throat burn as she held back her tangled emotions and focused on cleaning up the mess that she had made.

“I see.” Harika’s gaze danced with worry, her expression hidden from the boy as he worked on cleaning up the mess. She almost felt as if she had broken something instead, Harika feeling guilty that she couldn’t do more to help out. All she could do was keep being friendly by chatting the time away with the boy, showing off a few more decorations as she worked on setting the tables once the boy cleaned them off. And then finally when everything was settled, Harika handed over the baked goods and watched as the boy disappeared back into the streets. She could only hope that he would find sanctuary somewhere one day, even if it wasn’t here.
