An Honest Accident

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Sometimes, accidents happen. Your character has found themself in a situation where an honest accident has resulted in an item being broken. Possibly your own, or you may have broken someone else's. Was it an item at a shop, or a priceless artifact? How does your character react to the honest mistake?

(1/10)

It is no secret that, perhaps, one of the most defining traits of a proper Oban noblewoman is the ability to host beautiful, delightful, and well attended events. It was the first year of Fatima being properly out in noble society, and this as her first get together. It was a party, technically - with finger foods and a band of musicians, and delicate glass flutes of bubbly drinks, and scattered with small velvet seats and couches for conversation.

Fatima didn't mind it, as far as parties went. Her friends were present, there were a number of eligible bachelors here seeming to enjoy the attention, delicious treats, and even a small dance floor for a few couples to enjoy at a time. Not a proper cotillon, but a delightful little area by the band. Adequate, enjoyable. Unfortunately, it wasn't well attended enough to be a proper gala or ball - a fact her mother had made clear when she came down to inspect the turn out, and left with a look on her face as if she'd sucked on a lemon.

Fatima sighed, hiding her own unhappy frown behind the paper fan she was fluttering by her face, then snapped his closed - sharp enough that her friend beside her squeaked and broke into quiet giggles. "It's a fun party, isn't it?"

"Delightful." Her other friend Deliah sighed, looking down the tip of her nose as she plucked a treat off a passing server's tray. "Not enough games, but it's lovely."

"Games are for children's parties." Fatima hissed back, only to smile at another young lord as he passed, tipping her head politely. Her eyes slid sidelong to her first friend Marin. "The next one must be better. What's missing?"

As a spare heir, it was Qaisan's obligation to carry himself with an elevated sense of dignity in the off chance something were to befall his brother. When Calix made his formal debut into Oban high society so did Qaisan and yet only one of them retained the public eye. In polite society both of Faisal's sons were invited to balls, weddings, and political events, but Qaisan knew they only had eyes for his twin. When they were younger the boys had been nearly inseparable; the same training, same classes, same tutors, and even the same bed. Now that they were growing older Calix's duties were taking him on a different path and left Qaisan with far too much time on his hands.

In his singular year of being a staple in noble gatherings the hybrid had already developed a reputation for being a wild card. Under his parents eye he played the role of the perfect son, around his twin he was bearable, but left on his own? Qaisan became a veritable viper and his tongue had only sharpened with age.

At first he'd been 'content' enough to keep to his circle of friends during the party, but the longer they spent in one another's company the more things livened up. Qaisan wasn't even sure why he was there; he didn't know the name of the girl hosting the event, nor her family name. All he knew was that his parents had encouraged him to make connections, and, well....His friends were enjoying seeing how many hors d'oeuvres he could fling into Lord Farcus' atrocious wig before he noticed.

"How has he not felt them yet?" Virin barely stifled a laugh as he leaned against Qaisan's shoulder.

"It's because he's so sweaty all the time," Qaisan snickered, "He's already used to slimy things on his skin."

"If you knocked him over he wouldn't stop sliding until he got to the ocean."

"Games." Delia snapped back, from behind her smile. Her gold eyes slipped to somewhere past Fatima's shoulder, crinkling in annoyingly cocky amusement. "And I'm not the only one who thinks so."

"What is that even supposed to-" Fatima angled her head so she could follow her friend's stare without being too obvious, only to sharply turn in that direction, horrified. Of course, it would have been humorous at any other party - Lord Farcus really should have had the grace to realize this was an event meant for the younger crowd, since the hostess was an unattached lady, and she'd been embarrassed for him when he arrived. But Fatima couldn't be amused, because this was HER party - think of the position it put her in!

"Who is that?" She hissed.

Deliah shrugged, but Marin tapped a painted nail against her lip, pretty eyes turned skywards. "Is that... Ah! That's - his grandmother is someone important - and I think his parents are military? Gosh - Is that Calsan? Qaisix? I don't know!"

"You don't remember who you invited to your own party?" Deliah grinned, snickering at Fatima's frustrated huff.

Sweeping away from her giggling, useless friends, Fatima gathered her skirts so she could walk as quickly as she could (a court lady running was unseemly, after all). As she walked she wracked her mind for any memory of these boys. She slowed down as she got closer, taking a wide berth around an ornamental display of ornate glass vials, filled with rare and expensive dyes. It was a centerpiece of many of the Murinus Family parties, with different rare, colorful stems added for each occasion. Today's party had a beautiful ultramarine powder in a vial stretched and shaped like a marine creature with multiple limbs; a rare show of highly skilled glasswork.

A random young boy flinging things so close to such a display only made her more angry, but she composed herself as best she could and smiled as she approached. "My friends, the food must not be to your liking if you're throwing it." She said quietly, so as not to embarrass them for their behavior.

While one of the boys had sense enough to look intimidated by the young ladies presence, the other two most certainly did not. Neither Qaisan nor Virin showed the least bit of interest to her rapidly approaching form, even with their friend started to subtly tug on the backs of their tunics to warn them. Once she'd arrived he properly stepped back, seemingly blending in with the drapery, while Qaisan rolled an eye her way. Viring dismissed her completely and even as she spoke the young noble tossed a bit of fruit straight into Lord Farcus' atrocious wig.

When he did deign to look her way it was with total apathy; as if he were addressing a perzi who demanded far too much attention.

Still, it was Qaisan who spoke, "My lady I would never waste a quality meal." He lifted a piece of fruit between his thumb and forefinger before giving it an experimental squish. "This swill, however, is perfect for flicking, which is precisely what we are doing. Surely your education isn't so lacking that you cannot see the difference?"

Virin snickered.

Fatima bristled, and quickly flicked open her fan, using it to hide the scowl that marred her painted lips, and the wrinkle of her nose. What foul boys! Just one would be bad enough, but with two they were riling eachother up, encouraging one another to lose all decorum and make fools of themselves. How nasty, that the boy would use faux politeness to disguise his insults!

The worst part was that, this close, she realized that the boy who spoke wasn't full fire. Her family was... open minded, as most of the court endeavored to be in the aftermath of the war, but it only further appalled her that someone in such a delicate position at court would make such a mockery of himself. And worse, she couldn't remember who his family was so she didn't dare remind him of that fact, lest she offend whoever his water parent was.

They must have been someone important, if her governess allowed his name onto her event list. If he was merely a b*****d, he wouldn't have been invited in the first place. "Well." She sighed, once she recovered herself and fixed her face back into a look of dignified disappointment, instead of open disgust. "I always heard women matured quicker than men, but this is just proof of it. Young man, this isn't one of your silly friend's garden parties where you can play and frolic. You're only making yourselves look ridiculous!"

"I'm sure you're quite right; when a mature woman makes her presence known please direct her our way, won't you? For now move out of the way; you're ruining my shot." Qaisan gave the pretentious little thing his smuggest smile before readying his 'weapon' for the next volley.

"Silly friends?" Virin clucked his tongue and leaned over to clap a hand onto Qaisan's shoulder. "You have no idea who you're talking to, do you? Ballroom full of souls and you try to pull rank on -"

Qaisan held up a hand before sitting up a little straighter. "Calm down, Virin. It's not her fault. She's still a child; she's learning." His expression soured. "Poorly but still learning." He leaned around her, and before Fatima could say anything else - or worse, intercept his shot - fired. Maybe it was the speed that gave him less than perfect aim or maybe it was his own arrogance, but the results were still disastrous. The bit of fruit missed Lord Farcus' wig entirely, sailing instead for a rather delicate, rather expensive piece of pottery.

For a moment it wobbled on it's stand, causing Qaisan to suck in a breath and for just that brief stretch he thought he was safe. All too soon it tipped, fell to the floor and shattered.

Fatima's lessons on decorum had quite a lot to say about how a young noblewoman should handle disrespect. 'Always comport yourself with dignified grace - a good lady and wife can command attention and respect with a glance.'

But while Fatima was quite adept at her studies, chirping what her instructors wanted to hear was much different than remembering their lessons in the moment. Fatima's eyes flashed with growing ire, and even her friends - content to watch at first - realized that she was tipping dangerously close to losing her composure. Delia moved closer, reaching to try and catch Fatima's arm, while Marin turned in a whirl of skirts and scurried for the stairs.

"I don't care who he is! You both are meant to be here as guests, and you shame yourselves--" Her voice raised past the hushed whisper of before, and Delia winced as eyes turned towards the small group in intrigue. It was, after all, a calm party and some were eager for a bit of excitement.

At this point, Qaisan interjected both his friend and her, and Fatima whirled on him with fire in her eyes - just as he flung something else.

Ignorant of what was about to happen, Fatima snarled (in a decidedly unladylike fashion) and smacked his hand out of where it was still raised, post-throw, incensed. She didn't care if kicking a high ranking noble out of her party would cause trouble for their family - Fatima had NEVER been so embarrassed! "I want you to leave, you brutish--" She hissed - only to jolt when a crash resounded behind her.

Immediately, the dull roar of conversation around them stopped; servants froze in place like aldabuck, and a few guests close to the shards of vase stepped delicately away from it, grimacing. At the top of the stairs, Marin returned moments later with Lady Durnave, Fatima's mother, who took in the scene with a grim set of her mouth. Then, she forced a smile and clapped her hands. "Well! It seems things have gotten a little lively - perhaps some fresh air in the garden will be a good change in scenery?"

Immediately, servants moved to attend to the vase while the Lady descended the stairs. The doors were opened to guide the guests out towards the gardens, but with a pang of panic Fatima saw a good deal of them calling for their coats, taking the chance to leave.

A long, low exhale was the only sound that came from Virin. Qaisan was just barely aware of it, all sound muffling around him as he stared in abject horror at the scene before him. You've gone too far this time, you really fu- Out of the corner of his eye he was distinctly aware of a few servants who had paused, hands still extended with glasses and pitchers, as if unsure how exactly to proceed.

He only came around when the sting of a slap on his hand brought him around and even then Qaisan wasn't exactly aware of when she'd done it. The young lady herself seemed just as shocked as he was, though her already mottled face seemed decidedly more tipped into rage.

"I'm...going to go talk to a few people." Virin awkwardly clapped Qaisan's shoulder before quickly rising. He passed a look Fatima's way - a quick, fearful little thing - "Damage control, you understand." Don't leave me, don't leave me, don't leave me. Qaisan would never have begged his friend to stay and to his credit the other boy didn't immediately run from the scene, though his steps were decidedly quick.

Which left him with the lady of the hour.

His parents would be furious when they found out, and his grandmother....his grandfather...Gods, how could he fix this? He had to; it was just an accident! They would see that, right?

Qaisan rose carefully from his seat, almost as if he too were afraid of setting her - Fussila? Fuscili? Gods what was her name - off. "I..." He took a sobering breath. "..may have miscalculated my shot."

It should be Fatima ushering her guests out - handling the chaos with an air of grace, not her mother. It was yet another failure she was certain she'd hear about, once everyone had gone. But for the moment, she couldn't help but feel thankful that her mother hadn't opted to leave her alone to drown in her own failed event. Fatima swallowed thickly, blinking her eyes quickly to suppress the tickle of embarrassed tears that threatened her.

Maybe, once she calmed down, she would be thankful that Qaisan had the sense to stay and not run away with his tail between his legs. It wouldn't have done him much good, considering her mother would be able to easily find out who his family was and chase him down, but in this moment it spoke well of him. Of course, Fatima wasn't finding herself very charitable at this given moment, when her gut was twisting in knots.

Her lips were pursed in an effort to keep herself contained, though at some point she'd gripped her fan so hard that the delicate bamboo had snapped. "You shouldn't have been-" She started, voice acidic - but she cut herself off and closed her eyes. Inhaling deeply, Fatima flicked her hair back, then looked at the young man again as he stood, her smile so fake and strained it looked painful on her face. "It's quite a shame. That vase - it was a gift to my family by a previous monarch if I remember my history correctly. But who knows? Perhaps my lord brother will find it in himself to feel gracious?" The innocent tone suggested that this was a very unlikely scenario.

It was surprising how quickly shame could humble someone. Whatever pride had ushered Qaisan through the evening seemed to have fizzled out upon impact and now that he was faced with the consequences of his actions...Well, he was just grateful he wasn't thrown out. Yet anyway.

This was horrible enough without word of that reaching his father.

He'd faced a woman's wrath before - he had a mother, knew what she could do when provoked - but this was new. This veneer of 'elegance' hidden over the fangs of a venomous beast ready to strike him for destroying her lair.

Qaisan very much wanted to run, but he stayed. Stupidly he stayed.

"I will...speak to your lord brother about repayment - not only for the vase but for what this night may have cost you." Invitations, potential alliances - matches. It would look poorly on his family as well - on his twin more so than himself - but as a male Qaisan would have time to let this all blow off. As a lady Fatima's desirability was limited if she didn't want to remain on the shelf.

"I have to say...I'm surprised you're handling this...better than I thought."

"Am I?" Fatima asked, voice pitching up just enough to be unpleasant. "Why yes. A proper lady endeavors to hold her poise even when faced with such unpleasantness." Her voice trembled with a fierce emotion. Over the suddenly sheepish boy's shoulder, she could see her mother trying to entice their guests to stay, but she could see plenty of servants scurrying to fetch travel cloaks and delicate paper umbrellas for the women to shield themselves from the sun as they headed home. Those who remained were unwilling to leave the ballroom as bid without a fight, too interested in witnessing the mess that had been made, likely so they could waggle their tongues about it to their friends later.

How Fatima's debut party had been not only boring (because, loathe though she was to admit it, he was right - it was dreadfully so!), but crashed by a much more affluent family.

It would likely be years before her brother approved a budget for any future parties thrown here. "And I have to say, I'm surprised you didn't run away with your friend the moment things went awry."
