Operation: Rebel was in full effect, and although Colm was determined to get back in his brother's good graces, he still felt a twinge of discomfort when he set it into motion. They were home, in their shared room (they'd lost their private bedrooms when the twins moved out of their parents' room as toddlers), and it was after curfew. Arden was still awake, because of course he was, but usually by now Colm would be suggesting he get some sleep. Tonight, though, he kept his ear out until he heard their parents' room close, then sat up, revealing that he was still dressed in his day clothes.
"How do you usually sneak out?" He asked, in a hushed voice, grabbing his full bag and slinging it over his shoulder with a grimace at its weight. "Do you want to sneak out?"

That night at the dinner table he'd been in a mood and Arden wasn't entirely sure why. Instead of lashing out with sharp, hurtful jabs to his parents or an act of glib indifference to his siblings the teenager had chosen to remain quiet. There was something lying just under his skin, bubbling and festering, with a burn that made the act of sitting uncomfortable.
And so Arden 'went to sleep', although he hadn't even so much as closed his eyes. Instead, he'd simply rolled over enough to show his brother his back and waited for Colm to get on with his speech, fall asleep and slip out. He hadn't expected the mini-lecture to start out this way, though, and was curious enough to turn to look over his shoulder -
And his eyes widened before narrowing. "Do you want to sneak out? Why are you dressed?"

(2/7) Colm stared at his brother expectantly, and though he understood his mistrust he also pursed his lips and tilted his head, as if to silently say 'What about it?' It was the sort of petulant, teenager-like response that he'd learned from Arden, but typically never dabbled in himself unless he was trying to be sarcastic with other students who were giving him trouble.
"I'm dressed so I can sneak out." he responded flatly. Instead of waiting for Arden to respond, he turned to carefully pry open the window, remembering how Arden had snuck out the few times Colm caught him. "Is is the trellis outside you use? It's a miracle you haven't broken your ankles yet. Well? Come on."

"No it's not the trellis." Arden hissed and flung the blanket off as he twisted out of bed. The teen was - predictably - fully dressed in a dark, hooded tunic that could have hid his hair if he wanted. "It's too weak to support that much weight - just - stop it before we get caught."
Once Colm had the window open, Arden nudged him to the side and instead of taking the obvious path out he swung one leg through, made a show of catching his boot in a notch in the stonework outside before climbing down. "Follow me; if you do it wrong you'll fall and mom'll wake up."
Every move he made downward Arden made sure to point out before making it to the next point.

(3/7) Oh. Colm's eyes dragged over his brother, and already a comment was on the tip of his tongue, before he squashed it down. Instead he shuffled aside and watched as Arden deftly climbed out, and as he carefully followed he stifled a surge of strangely placed affection at the fact Arden was actually helping him. In his shoes, he'd accuse Colm of faking it so he could figure out his methods and more accurately snitch on him.
Once they were at ground level though, Colm dusted off hands, primly knocked some dirt from his pants, then tipped his head politely to his brother. "There's a party. I know you aren't a student anymore-" This was the first time he'd called Arden out on that fact, "But I promised you'd come, so that I could come." Because, apparently, Colm coming on his own hadn't really elicited much excitement.
Not that he'd want to go, most days - but maybe if he did, Arden wouldn't think he was such a bother anymore.

Once they were close enough to ground level, Arden pushed off of the wall and landed promptly on his feet. He rubbed the callouses on his fingers against one of another, heedless of watching to see if they were seen now that the sun was down. Most days he kept his hands palm down around the family; bruised knuckles could be explained away, but a workman's callouses were harder.
He stilled. Arden's shoulders stiffened and when he whipped around to Colm his eyes were a defensive silver. "You knew? So what is this really? You're waiting to get undeniable proof so you can snitch on me?" He sneered.

(4/7) How could Colm put into words the reason for his change in view regarding his brother? He'd never been good at words, or people, like Arden was; he was good at book learning, but not so much the other pieces. Once, though, he'd understood Arden, and he'd had the mistaken belief that he still did, and could keep him in line so that their parents didn't have one more thing to worry about.
And when he left school, it hurt to realize he really hadn't understood him in a long, long time. The fact he was used to his brother scowling at him, or angry with him, only made that clearer.
"I want to go to a party. I heard there's alchohol." It was said flatly, with a clinical disinterest that made his words unconvincing. But he paused, then snapped his fingers and pointed at his brother. "I know! Truth or Dare. I can tell you something incriminating, or I can do your dare, and that way you know I won't tell Mother. Then I do you, and we're even."

"You want to go to a party with booze?" Arden made sure to enunciate every skeptical word and if he'd had a longer brow it would have been arched into a fine point. Nothing about that seemed particularly Colm, but - well - it wasn't as if Arden was going to say no. Between keeping his own secrets and the long days of work he was ready for a good time. Having his brother along - even if he was concerned about getting tattled on - might make it a little better.
Just maybe.
"Okay, you're on, but start walking first." They were still too close to home for his liking. When they were far enough away that Arden felt safe he pondered on his question, "Alright, I've got one. Truth or Dare?"

(5/7) Colm nodded, relieved that Arden was going along with it, and easily fell into step with him. He was nervous - of course he was, and a part of him still felt like he'd get caught. But his outing with Siel helped to remind him how much he wanted to change. He didn't want to be someone that his whole family thought was a stick in the mud, someone who didn't even enjoy a friendly shove or play fight.
It was, also, exciting though. Would there be boys at this party? He hadn't stopped to think about it, beyond just making sure Arden went with him in the first place.
"Dare." he said, with a nervous, but excited smirk. Truth would be what he'd go with any other day; but it was what his brother would expect. It seemed like the quickest way to prove that he was serious.

"I dare you to lick that sign post." They were nearing an intersection, and Arden motioned to the brass pole. It wasn't likely to freeze - it was too warm for that - but there was no telling how many hands had touched it that day or what it would taste like.
By that point Arden was outright grinning. It wasn't anything hidden or put on; just a genuinely excited, if bratty, younger brother trying to get his big brother to do something gross. "Or you could let Marcella pierce your ears. Your choice." He'd almost offered to let the twins do it, but Arden switched gears mid-thought. They might take mercy on him and try to make it quick. Marcella though...she'd probably drag it out just to see how his ear reacted. Little weirdo.

(6/7)
Colm faltered midstep, stumbling to a halt next to the aforementioned post, eyes snapping to it in horrified realization, before turning back to Arden with a half hearted glare. "That's disgusting." He intoned, with more emotion than he'd dripped into the rest of his words that night. To that, his grinning brother gave him an alternative, and immediately the older boy paled, wincing.
Marcella, the daughter of their father's healer, was a sweet girl... and a bit of a psycho. She'd be just as likely to stick the needle in his eardrum just to see what happened. Or try to pierce his ear with a harvested keldari fang or something.
"No mercy for your brother?" He tried, but at his brother's answering grin he sighed and leaned in closer, face contorting the closer he got - until with a muffled whine of disgust he licked the post.
The metal tang immediately assaulted his taste buds, and if it wasn't past curfew he might have stomped his feet or expressed his reaction more loudly. Instead, he gave a full body shudder and tried to punch Arden's arm with a limp fist.
"Ugh. I hate you. Truth or Dare?"

Arden's smile only grew. "I know." The teenager couldn't help giving in to a laugh at the sheer look of dismay on his brother's face. He moved in closer, the soles of his boots clicking on the cobbles until he was close enough to see the show in action and once it was over he let out a loud laugh, heedless of the time of night.
Honestly, it was the first time he'd smiled that much in a while and he couldn't find a reason to stop.
A few voices from nearby homes hollered at him to shush, muttering something about 'useless drunks', but all Arden did was step close to slap his brother on the back.
"Dare. Seems only right."

(7/7) Still furiously scrubbing his hand against his mouth, Colm glowered at his brother, frustrated but also strangely pleased at how happily he was laughing. But then he ducked his head at the shout from somewhere beyond the street, stifling a snort of laughter against his wrist when Arden clapped him on the back as if welcoming into the club of delinquents.
"Dare. Of course." He responded with a roll of his eyes. He could just tell him to lick it too, but it seemed both lazy and unimaginative. He further considered turning the piercing dare back on him, or daring him to kiss someone at the party tonight. But instead, as they resumed walking, he turned towards Arden with a slow smile. "I dare you... to scream, as loud as you can." And with a consoling smack on the shoulder, he took off running, so he wouldn't be too close to the 'scene of the crime' when inevitably someone called the night watch on them.

Arden's eyes widened. "That's dirty, Colm!" He half-shouted at his brother's retreating back. The teenager hunkered, passing a half look over his shoulder as he kept walking, almost as if whoever had yelled earlier were watching him with that critical eye.
So, as long as he did the dare it didn't matter where he did it, right? With a burst of speed Arden let loose the loudest, throat shattering scream he could while doing his best to run out of the neighborhood. Whoever was awake to hear them wouldn't catch up! But he would catch Colm and maybe make him eat some mud next!
