Rao 1 Now that his son was a bit older it was time to think about a companion that could help protect him and keep him company when his parents were not as close as Rao would like them to always have the free time to be. But nothing had gone wrong so far. It just worried him that Vhallas just happened to be the spitting image of his Mother with a bit of Raol tossed in.
He took a deep breath and went to wake his son up. They were on the ranch and it was spring, there were baby animals everywhere and he was ready to take on one in the chance to train it early and for his son. Thus his son would have to pick out his pet and it needed to be loyal and something that would be decently intimidating. Not a little puff ball appetizer like some pets were.
He liked radaku and snaptrotter, Kechiri liked Janarim and Snaptrotters. He wondered what Vhallas would like?
"Wake up son, time to find a familiar for you~"

Vhallas 1 "Ahhh!" He rose out of bed like the undead, springing up excitedly from the sleeping furs. "I'm so ready Da, I am, lemme uh find my socks, yes I will need those. He skittered towards his clothes and changed out of his pjs that were covered in squids. He liked squids and octopi and crabs and other sea ish creatures. Of course it would be weird to have his parents and not like nature all that much. Today was the celebration of spring and his Da had promised that he could get a familiar because he would be old enough, well he felt he was old enough and had been pestering his parents for as long as he could remember about getting a familiar he pulled on his socks and the rest of his clothes and presented himself, slightly ruffled to his Dad.
"Beast ranch right? I want the most selection possible!"

Raolvar 2
"Aye we will go to the beast ranch, they just had a bunch of new babies born this spring so it is a most excellent time to go." They were sort of on the property already but quite out of the way in their mainland home. They were making plans on expanding it as it was built more for one person than a daughter of the tribe just getting her feet wet having kids, plus himself her mate, this was his original small place on the ranch. Well back in the bush with a peek of the ocean to one side through the trees. He loved it here, he loved anywhere where his family was. Kechiri was having a lovely water day and would be back that evening smelling of waves and salt air. She was taking to motherhood really well and he was doing his level best. He enjoyed each moment, except the initial cry all the time phases but they were long gone now.

Vhallas 2
He hummed as he and his Dad made their way down the long, wooded forest trail to the main beast taming hub full of barns and bustle and extensive extended family. At first when he had been brought to shore earlier as a wee one he was surprised to find that he had so very much family and that they all pretty much looked like him. To the point where Dad kind of looked weird if Vhallas looked at him too long but then again Grandma and Grandpa looked weird and Grandpa and Uncle Kellye kind of looked like Dad. Either way Dad was his Dad and he was proud to have the handsome iceling as blood kin but this paled in comparison to the worship he gave his mother who was beautiful fierce and scary. He adored his parents and if he had to choose who he was closer to it would be Mom but that might change as he grew.

Raolvar 3 He looked over at his son. "Our only request is that the first beast you have be of a protective sort, we want to increase your freedom, but because of your Mother's sketchy past we have extra concerns, you are safe on the ranch and on the island for the most part but there is always the chance of a freak ship landing and the crew not being friendly. Blessed by the gods you look very much like your Mother and your Grandsire and it will be quite obvious who you are."
There he hadn't wanted to say it but it was time the boy was aware of the entirety of his situation. "Your Mom used to harass pirates and they won't take kindly to her or those related to her."
A brisk wind blew by and he wondered if it might not rain on them. Still worth it to go see familiars with his son, as an outdoor kid he didn't mind rain too much.

Vhallas 3 Immediately he fixed on the most exciting information and his eyes lit with excitement. "Mom pirated pirates?" He had had a vague idea that her previous job had been dangerous but nothing compared to this! How come they had kept the information from him for so long? That was totally not fair, he would have pelted his Mother with questions a long time ago about all of that. He was curious about many things, mischeivious too.
"Well, I'm glad you told me, you could have told me sooner." He put just a hint of whine in his voice. Though he didn't want to put too much in in case he got the old speech of 'keep that up and we are going home.' He had gotten that enough certainly, though he tried his best to be good on outings. He would be allowed to go with his Dad to the main market soon and he really really wanted to go, even if his very face put him slightly more at risk than the others that didn't look like Mama.

Raolvar 4 They arrived at the active part of the beast ranch in no time and he was happy to see the healthy hustle and bustle going on about their days. Old friends and new family passed and called and he finally caught the attention of a young beast charmer intern who did not belong to the main branch of the family that was too busy to attend them at the moment.
She agreed to lead them to the pen full of newly weaned janarim pups, hatched a while ago. This would be the ideal age to pick out one. Raolvar examined her closely out of shear curiousity. She looked like a water hybrid with wind, she had blond hair, two toned water skin, wind dark terra cotta crystals and blue eyes. An interesting mix to be sure, but it sure worked for her. They reached the young critter pen without incident, what with all the large and glorious beasts tramping through the yard led by handlers, some were being sold, some were being exercised all were well in hand.

Vhallas 4 He was dazzled to say the least having been a bit younger the last time he was here and not rememebering quite this much hustle and bustle but it seemed like that was what it was this time of the year a mad rush to get everything done every morning between sales and births. Spring had come to Matori and with it an influx of life and energy to conquer the new season.
Plants were coming up and he suddenly had a great urge to check how his garden was coming along, despite checking every day. But there would be plenty of time for that once he got home. Now was the time to chose his new bestest best friend and he was super excited for that.
At first there was so much rough and tumble movement in the pen of rainbow armored critters that he couldn't tell head from tail but over time they coalesced into singular beings.

Raolvar 5 He had to admit that he was impressed at how big the whole janarim breeding operation had gotten over the years since he had left, it was truly spectacular the healthy armor and variety of color, the bright spark in each reptilian eye.
Maybe he would have to get one one day from this program too, you know to remain cool. He winked at his son.
"Well go ahead and pick on out, take your time and enjoy it. " He was going to. He took a drink from his flask and made sure that his son drank too. Kechiri would never forgive him for bringing her home a happy little prune.
He sat right there in the dust and made of his knee a spot for his kid to perch. Better to look for quite a while and get it right.

Vhallas 5 There were just so many in all the imaginable colors, he liked black and bright colors. It would be so hard to choose. He took the offered water and sat on his Dad's knee and got as comfortable as possible. He scribbled in the notebook he had brought about which were interesting and why and then he took quite a long time to just watch them and absorb.
This was the most fun he had had in a while and he led a pretty fun life if he did say so himself, which he did. He kept a hand on his Dad's broad chest to keep himself sitting upright.
"There are just so many Dad." He was scribbling madly and unable to keep up with all the glorious pretties in front of him. "How do they feed that many?" He wanted to know, janarim, full grown ones must eat alot and growing babies probably not far behind and there were more of them than the adults.

Raolvar 6 "They have a great many hunters, I expect that is how they manage to feed so many, along with bought food." Kechiri would know more of the details she had been around it more recently than he had.
"Take your time kid, maybe we can request some chairs." He scooted his son off his knee and disappeared into a wood shed. He came out with two stumps and set one on its side so that Vhallas could sit comfortably for longer before he righted his own stool.
"There all the comfort we could wish for." He settled back down to watch the magic happen, getting one's first familiar was such an important step. There was something to be said indeed for the bond that was formed. He adored both of his familiars, he and Xerius had been together for a very long time and he wanted Vhallas to have access to that sort of bond. That and the boy had started to drive him crazy asking for a pet.

Vhallas 6
After watching and taking many notes he had about five critters that he had narrowed his list down to.
He listed them off to his Dad so his Dad could see which ones he was talking about. "So I have five chosen as candidates. You see that one over by the fence? The purple and orange one, it is quite inquisitive. Then the one by the food tray the black with red tiger stripes." Looking at the moving critters he found the other three that were possibilities. "The black with rainbow blotches taking a drink there, and the two wrestling in the corner; indigo lime and white with sky blue spots. Those are the five that I have pulled from the bunch." Now it was just to get more details on each so he could narrow the list down a bit further than it was. Five was too many.

Raolvar 7 "I think you have a really good starting lineup going son." He admired the analytical abilities of his young son and wondered if he got that trait from himself or his mother. Their genetics as predicted had mixed really well in the small boy that sat before him staring avidly at the pile of janarim out in the pen.
"Would you like to get closer now?" It would be easier to gauge personalities that way, at the boys nod he requested of their guide that the chosen critters be cut from the herd and placed in a bonding corral so that he had Vhallas could get a better feed on personality and style.
This was a momentous occassion and he remembered the avid excitement that he had had when Thallassa, an Great Uncle of Vhallas' and his own best friend had sold him Xerius a long long time ago, the radaku had been his constant companion since.

Vhallas 7 "Thanks Dad!" He held his Father's hand as they walked toward the pen that the attendant had placed the critters into. They were babies still so of course they made her job hard. He thanked her as they passed through the gate. His heart was racing and he stood still in front of the beasts.
He asked his Dad to step away a bit because he wanted to see what they did. At first not a lot happened and the janarim collectively sniffed about the pen. It was a new place this was quite understandable. After a while though the small (currently) critters noticed that they had admirers.
The first to come over to him and sniff his hand gently was the black and red striped janarim. Soon to be glomped by the rainbow and black that was also demanding Vhallas's attention. Two of the others were sniffing curiously at his Father and one was ignoring them all.
"Between these two then."

Raolvar 8 "Fine choices I think." He was happy to live in this moment. From what he understood, and from what he was already seeing, children tended to grow up way too fast. He could still remember when he held Vhallas in his arms the first time. How he had wrapped a tiny hand around one finger and there had went Raol's whole heart and whole world. He was so similar to Kechi but there was enough of himself in there. His crystals, his gentler nature, though Kechi had proven to be a stellar and doting Mother, he couldn't be more proud of them.
"I am good with whatever you decide my son." It was his choice, no need to influence it. Kid had his Mother's beast taming blood instincts he was sure. From the looks of it he had done well in choosing. And the critters they had chose him as well, that was an extra level of importance. His stomach rumbled and he tried to hide it, not wishing to rush Vhallas into a rash decision.
