Name: 林 杜紀彦 (Hayashi Tokihiro): first name Tokihiro 杜紀彦 "shrine grove / lore / man of talent"; surname Hayashi 林 "forest". So you could technically get "wise guy in the woods" out of that, and... not be far off, really. Nickname: Feel free to call him Toki. ^_^ Gender/Pronoun: Male, aro, he/him Age: 23 Birthday: 23 May 2001 Sign: Water Snake; Gemini Sun, Moon AND Rising (a triple Gemini) Gemstone: Moonstone Blood Type: A+ Fav. Food: Eggs! Doesn't matter how they're prepared, though he does kind of prefer them a little loose or runny. He's particularly fond of omurice and tamago kake gohan, still preferring Japanese food over American. Hated Food: Speaking of American food: hot dogs. He finds them utterly vile. Occupation: Grounds worker/landscaper for the Destiny City Parks Department. He spends his days on a crew either clearing or pruning or planting; he's the one they send high into the trees to do the dangerous stuff. The parks are open 24/7/365, so his shifts can fall on any day of the week. In fact, he often works extra shifts, as much for the money as for getting to hang out in the parks and play unofficial docent to visitors. He loves his job. heart On his off days, he works as landscaper for Michelangelo duPont. He loves that job too! His specialty is natural, organic landscape design. He lets the plants themselves decide how they want to be used; his gardens and landscapes are like a touch of unspoiled wildness in the middle of the city. Hobbies: gunpla: Toki builds and customizes SD Gundam model kits in his spare time and collects the tiny tiny gashapon ones when he can find them. He's built other, regular-scale Gundam models too, of course, customizing them to within an inch of their plastic lives, but he has a real fondness for the ridiculous cuteness of the little super-deformed versions. Chibi giant robot battle suits. heart rambling: Despite how much he enjoys the energy of the city, Toki misses being out in the country. He instinctively gravitates toward any and all parks and green urban spaces, the more wild and non-landscaped the better -- ironic, given his career. So when things are slow at work, he'll often go on rambles and hikes through the parks and the wilderness areas outside Destiny City. He doesn't really care about the perceived dangers of roaming the forests – all he cares about is getting out into nature. tormenting hanging out with his cousin: One of the reasons Toki's family chose to relocate to Destiny City is because his mother has relatives here! Namely the Tsukiyama clan, of which Yuki Tsukiyama is Toki's cousin. Cousin Yuki is an interesting person, and Toki enjoys visiting with him when he can. He's fascinated by Yuki's tinkering, mainly because he can relate to it with his gunpla, and is constantly asking questions about this or that and being annoying. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTIONEyes: Dark dark brown, almost black, wide and almond shaped with pronounced epicanthic folds and short, thick lashes. His brows are straight and black. Hair: Black and stick-straight with a spiky fringe that gets in his eyes on occasion, coming down to about his shoulders in a messy shaggy sort of 'do; usually keeps it under control with a backwards baseball cap of some team or other he knows nothing about because he doesn't follow sportsball. Face: A cutie! Ovalish, tending toward spade-shaped, with a straight nose and an impish smile. There's almost always a dirt smudge somewhere on his face. Skin Tone: Somewhere between fair and medium, tanned by the nature of his job to around #E0AC69. Body Type: At 5'10", Toki has a deceptively athletic, if skinny build; he moves like an active teenager, all foldy-bendy bouncy energy. Fine-boned and delicate-looking, except he's neither fine nor delicate. Clothes: Toki dresses like he grabbed the first things he could reach without regard for whether it matched or not (very often the case). And half those things are work clothes; he wears a coverall, big clompy engineer boots and a hardhat when he's up in the trees or working around the park. You'll also find things like baggy cargo pants, long cut-offs, t-shirts and plaid work shirts littering the floor of his room. He wears a silver Totoro charm on a cord strung with black beads around his neck, a reminder of his favorite movie and the place he grew up, Sayama Hills (aka "Totoro's Forest" ), outside of Tokyo.

Virtues: super friendly: Toki comes off as cute, quirky, charming in his own way, high-energy, and as blithely self-centered as a cat. Exuberant and friendly, he's one of those genuine "people person" people who'll talk the face off of anyone within earshot, whether he knows them or not. It's more than just wanting to hear himself talk, too -- the stuff he babbles on about are the things he loves, gardening and landscaping and nature. surprisingly smart: Toki is a whole lot sharper than he seems on the surface. While he really isn't as stupid as he can appear, his "smarts" are more common sense and deductive reasoning (aka asking a lot of questions and adding two plus two) than book-intelligence. A keen observer of the world around him, he pays attention and remembers things and trusts his instincts to steer him in the right direction. almost peaceful: For someone as occasionally manic as he can be, Toki has an air of serenity about him that shows through primarily when he's talking about his plants. It's not simple-mindedness; don't let the "sweetly stupid" facade fool you. It's that he's an uncomplicated soul, a man of the earth who doesn't require much out of life beyond a patch of soil to till and the sun on his face. Toki's serene demeanor is contagious, too, fairly capable of calming even the most preoccupied of visitors to his parks. Flaws: comes off as "sweetly stupid": Toki was the outcast at Meadowview High School when his family moved to Destiny City from Japan, bullied for being the weird kid with the funny accent from the sticks. In self-defense, he created a "sweetly stupid" exterior to protect himself from the worst of it. This outer persona he's cultivated since then only adds to the idiot savant impression he gives overall. Getting annoyed with him is like kicking a dumb but adorable puppy. easily distracted: Oooh shiny. If there's one thing Toki has trouble with, it's distractions. Yeah, he can pay real close attention to things and pick up on the slightest detail, but it's only if the thing he's paying attention to is really interesting. He often gets distracted at work by a new plant or flower that he didn't see before, or a butterfly, or a visitor to the park he's working in, or… you get the idea. Delighted by the new and novel, it's a problem he has difficulty reining in. mildly bitter: Toki still lives at his family's home and hates it. He's trying to save up enough money to pay the deposit and fees on an apartment, but it's a long, slow process. Doesn't help that he pisses through money buying drinks for his mates and gunpla and paying rent to his parents so he won't feel like a parasite. He doesn't really care that he has disappointed his parents, either. He knows he should care, and he knows he should feel like a complete failure for dropping out of DCU. But he doesn't. He does, however, hate them just a little for their constant disapproving looks.

Tokihiro was born to Hayashi Ren, a landscape architect for Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association, and his wife Izumi, in the town of Mizuho, Nishitama District, near the edge of Sayama Hills outside of central Tokyo. Toki was a bright, rambunctious little boy; thanks to his father's job at Noyamakita-Rokudouyama Park, he got to romp at will in the woods and the mountains, pretending he was playing with Totoro and the other forest spirits. His dreams were as active as his waking imagination was, filled with adventure and magic, starring himself as the spell-casting hero who beat up the bad guys and saved the day. Just before Toki was to enter high school, his father moved the family to America and Destiny City, due to an ailing sister of Izumi's. The transition from suburb and satoyama to city, not to mention an entirely new country, wasn't easy for Toki, triggering vicious headaches and multiple behavior problems. His social life wasn't any better; he was the outcast at his new school, Meadowview High, bullied for being the weird Japanese kid with the funny accent. In self-defense, he created a "sweetly stupid" persona to protect himself from the worst of it. The parks and green spaces of Destiny City were his real refuge, and he spent as much time there as he could, daydreaming that he was back in Sayama Hills with his make-believe forest kami friends and his imaginary wandering sorcerer adventures. Despite everything going on in his life, Toki managed to survive high school and got into DCU as an environmental engineering major. He did well for a while, still hiding behind his "sweetly stupid" outer shell while he fought the behavior problems (essentially undiagnosed autism and ADHD) and headaches that behaved like migraines. The more he fought, though, the worse his headaches got. It all finally began to interfere with his studies, and after a year of struggling he dropped out of college. Toki's dad, who had gotten a job as a landscape designer for the Destiny City Parks and Recreation Department, pulled some strings and got him a job as a groundskeeper, doing work in the various parks around the city. He took a few landscaping jobs with private clients on the side, and ultimately ended up not only thriving as a city employee, but also becoming the landscaper for the famous musician Michelangelo duPont, tending to the plants on his estate. It's a good life, filled with plants and trees and nature.

Toki's not religious, but he has a very shamanistic/animistic view on life. Growing up where he did in Tokyo's rural suburbs, he was exposed to a lot of Shinto practices and frequented some of the shrines in the area. He believes that everything has a spirit or a reason to exist in the world, and to deny something its purpose is just wrong. While gardening, Toki makes a point to talk to the plants and flowers and apologizes to the weeds for having to cull them. This even applies to inanimate objects like the tools he works with as a landscaper; they all have names, and they all get used and well cared for. (His landscaping truck is named Tilda. Yes, after Tilda Swinton. Don't ask.)
Despite his Japanese upbringing, Toki speaks nearly perfect English, learned during his schooling in Japan. His accent has almost completely gone away, thanks to diligent work while he was in high school. He's done this totally on his own, too; he was bullied unmercifully by his fellow students at Meadowview, so it was a matter of personal safety and relative sanity that he trained himself out of his accent. Regardless of whether he's speaking Japanese or English, his voice is a bright mid-tenor, often talking in enthusiastic, non-stop ALL CAPS.
Toki loves cats. Like really adores cats. The invention of the cat cafe was the most wonderful thing to happen in his life; he spends time when he can at Nekosuke and the other cat cafes in town, drinking coffee and helping socialize cats and kittens. He's decided that he'll own cats someday when he has an apartment, probably several. As it is, he's known for feeding the feral cats in the neighborhood, and they all know and trust him. Toki's something of a cat whisperer; he knows all the local cats, walking up to them and petting them (and even picking them up to hold them) without a thought. A soft touch, he always has treats in his pockets.
For all he works for the city, Toki's a busy guy! Breakfast happens on the way to work, usually at this one diner called Gertrude's that has AWESOME coffee and a great crowd of regulars. He always makes time for breakfast. After work, it's usually out for drinks and a nosh with some of his coworkers. On his off days, he'll often pick up small landscaping/gardening projects for local businesses and private residences, do some work at Michelangelo duPont's estate, go and hang out with his cousin Yuki Tsukiyama all night, or just hole up in his room and work on model kits. His parents rarely see him except in passing.
random likes: all plants, flowers, and trees, all the parks and green spaces in Destiny City, coffee, rice, natto, beer, the change of seasons, sunshine, being outside, interesting and intelligent conversation, people! random dislikes: bullies, rain (even though it's necessary), isolation, being cold, water (can't swim), confinement, most American "food" (though he's developing a fondness for pizza), having to kill weeds and pests
