Nabil stared at the display in the markets, the busy crowd making it easy enough for him to avoid any wandering eyes. Not that he had to worry too much about his family finding out about this particular excursion. He had decided to take today to venture out of the manor while the family was away on business, the teen wanting to explore and see whatever his extra coin could bring back home this week. While he wasn’t completely starved by his family, the lack of fresh fruits and the dullness of stale bread had grown a bit much over the last few weeks and he wanted to surprise his twin with a decent meal for once. So to the markets he went to spare a few precious coins, his savings earned from running errands when he could sneak away and hidden in an area beneath a loose tile on the floor of the backroom he lived in. Sneaking into the kitchens and cooking his own meals had become a habit as of late, Nabil finding a fondness for creating whatever he could during the later hours of the night when the staff was absent and his family mostly sleeping or attending some event. Gathering supplies though was a hassle since the staff would report him if he took too much, the teen then deciding that shopping was the solution for the time being.

“But what to purchase?” It would probably be best to look for discounted items, goods that were on the verge of being unsellable and perfect for someone trying to get as much as possible for their coin. It would be a lie though to say that the smell of fresh cooked meat being sold on the other side of the market wasn’t tempting, Nabil’s steps leading him there without him even realizing it until the surging crowd shoved him into another and had him quickly apologizing before stepping to the side once more. What was he even doing here? His empty stomach rumbled, a reminder that he truly hadn’t eaten today since deciding to leave before the servants woke up to avoid notice.

Maia was loitering around the market, one of her favorite past-times while she waited for the expedition that she had travelled all the way here to begin. Shouldn't be too much longer, she hoped, as she was itching to get out there and do some work. It felt weird to be idle for so long. No traveling. No exploring. No looking for artifacts and treasures on her own. Just wondering the city she had made a little home of. At least the busy parts of the streets. She dared not enter any of the others, remembering clearly the warnings given to her. Not that she would have anyway. She wasn't that dense, to just walk down a strange street out of curiosity. Pickpockets, or worse, were abound everywhere. There was more safety in the crowd of people, for more reasons than one. Tourists were also common, more so here than she ever remembered seeing back home. It allowed her to easily blend in with everyone else. A Shifter didn't go any more noticed than that Yaeli she was watching looking over a stall full of jewelry. Or that Zenan man taking a skewer of what looked like meat and vegetables.

Mm. That did look good, now that she was looking at it. And smelling it. A few minutes later, Maia was once more back in the middle of the crowd, a freshly cooked skewer between her fingers. She blew on it, testing it with the tip of her tongue until she deemed it cooled down enough for the first bite. Which she was unfortunately robbed of. No sooner did she have her delicious treat was the Shifter suddenly bumped into. Her hand, which hadn't been holding onto it tight enough, wobbled, causing the stick to fall from her fingers onto the crowd, where it was quickly stepped on by a passing woman.

"Ugh," she groaned, looking around her for who could have ruined her shoes with this disgusting food. Her eyes settled on Maia, still standing there with her one hand raised in preparation for the first bite. "Watch what you're doing," she chided and walked away before Maia could even think of an answer. A flush covered her cheeks, making her dark face go even darker. How dare she say those things! It wasn't even her fault. There were so many people around her, she'd never figure out who actually did it. So many voices, she couldn't hear a specific one. She stood back and surveyed with her hands on her hips. Until somebody else shoved her for having her elbows out. Hands now by her sides, Maia's eyes settled on a teen and she narrowed her eyes slightly. She decided he looked kind of guilty.

Nabil quietly backed up, the teen preparing to dart away in the opposite direction if things blew up. He had witnessed enough of it with his step-mother, the cruel woman willing to deal punishments without hesitation or even throw someone to the streets just for any minor mistake within their home. If she could cause suffering then surely she would do so. Thankfully though it looked like the Oban woman was only going to chide the Shifter instead of causing a huge ordeal over the mishap. He was content with that and was in mid-turn to walk away when he realized that there was a glare being cast in his direction now. Please no.

Running after already being spotted as a target was never a good idea, that much Nabil knew if he was trying to avoid suspicion. So he settled for casually walking back towards the Shifter, looking at the stand of herbs that was nearby as if that had been his target this whole time. “They can be really rude in the city, the market is especially a rough place when the uppity types come through.” He offered, picking up some herbs and twisting them in the light to see if they could last a few more days if he dried them out properly for seasoning. It was better to focus on them instead of wondering how much danger he truly was in with an irritated shifter standing nearby, her loss of food probably not helping the situation either. If she pushed about it then he supposed he could pay for another kebob, the few coins in his pocket already aching at the very thought of spending more money. It wasn't as if he could propose cooking for her...right? Nabil chewed the inside of his cheek, trying to keep his composure as he waited to see what type of reaction he would be dealing with soon.

The dropped food was soon being forgotten, the longer Maia stared at the young Oban making awkward small talk at her. Did he think she didn't know he was the one who had bumped into her in the first place? Hadn't he been the closest one to her at the time? As her pale eyes started taking in all the crowds around her, many people getting mad over something or another, she started to have her doubts. It could have been any number of them, there were s many here. Including someone who was long gone by now. Still, she wasn't going to let him think he could get away with it. There was still that chance. It wasn't because she was stubborn and disliked being wrong about something. Of course not.

She sniffed at him, raising her head in a haughty manner. Behaving more like the teenager he clearly was.

"Ah. So it wasn't you. Must have been my mistake, than." But her eyes went against her words, shooting accusations across the way. There was a good reason why she preferred being out in nature. Less crowds. Less people getting in the way. Less food spilled on the ground. Less agitation for her. "Just rude uppity types."

"It wasn't as if I didn't get shoved as well." Replied Nabil candidly, raising his pale gaze despite the sickening twist that happened in his stomach at the very thought of confrontation. It was frustrating to see others handle such thing so easily while he wanted to vomit with each passing moment, the shadow of his step-mother lingering over him even here. "So I honestly don't know if it was me. If it was then my apologies." He turned his gaze away afraid of the angry remark he would probably receive, but it was better to get confronted this way than risking her yelling out and chasing him through the crowd now that she was focused on him.

"I don't have much but I can buy another if you insist or do something else to make up for the mistake." The teen offered after another moment, finally looking back towards the shifter. "I probably could even prepare something better than that anyways if I had a place to cook and ingredients." Nabil didn't mind bragging a little bit, the only issue was offering to cook for someone without a true home of his own. That was his biggest frustration and current problem, the boy wanting nothing more than to flee the manor that housed him and find his own place in this world where he could truly thrive.

"Mm." Maia continued to stare, not purposely trying to intimidate or make the boy nervous. When you spent the majority of your life alone, even as a child being mostly left to your own amusement by your father, you tended to lack important social skills. All she was aware of was she had been wronged in some way and that made her angry. Perhaps he didn't do it. That had crossed her mind. There were so many people here, it was difficult to point the blame on anyone. Too much time had passed already. But she was still annoyed and didn't know what else to do with that feeling. She would not concede that he had a point. Merely tossed her head so one curly strand of hair was left trapped behind her shoulder.

She waved her hand at the suggestion, closing her eyes for a moment before reopening them with a small sigh. "I don't care anymore." She never liked the idea of someone else buying something for her, no matter how small it was. She had her own money, tucked away safe back at her barely furnished home here in the city. A house that served more as storage for what few belongings she had that she couldn't take with her on the job. A very unimpressive collection she hoped would detour most thieves from trying, thinking instead she was too poor to even own a bed. "Can you now?" Why were so many she was meeting boosting about some skill or another?
