Quote:
Prompt 3 (Flurries and Flowers): Strange snow flurries have been blowing through town, frosting entire buildings. Sometimes they come out of nowhere--overnight, or in the timespan of just a few short hours. Sometimes, only minutes. Snow falls rapidly and ice coats doors and windows, sealing them shut. These snow flurries are knocking out power, and worse--trapping people in buildings and cars. Sheets of frosty ice build up quickly and have caused major inconveniences. But, it’s not all bad, if you can find a way to appreciate the small things. After these flurries, in addition to the fresh snow and ice, beautiful flowers in the shape of snowflakes have sprouted up, too. They grow in small patches and permeate a pleasant, sweet fragrance. They can grow on any surface, as long as it is covered in snow or ice. If the flowers are not kept in freezing temperatures, they melt, but for the duration of their lifespan they are beautiful, fragile things.

Emry tugged at the door handle. The door wouldn’t budge.

Ice coated the building. This wouldn’t normally be a problem; the Iceplex was supposed to have ice. But that ice was also supposed to be inside the Olympic sized rink, not sealing the doors shut, preventing Emry from entering.

He tugged the handle again but had no better luck the second time.

With a huff and a dark glare for the inconvenience, Emry took a step back to consider the issue. The entrance was completely sealed—hinges frozen, doors stuck together, ice glistening in the sunlight. The ice didn’t seem particularly thick, but it was stubborn and wouldn’t break no matter how much strength he put into his attempts.

Emry kicked at the doors—right in the center where they should be weakest—but the ice didn’t so much as shift. He kicked again, harder, and got nothing more than a sore toe for his ******** piece of s**t,” he hissed to himself, hopping around on one foot while he waited for the pain of his bad decision to fade away.

Only to slip and fall, taking an ungainly tumble into the snow—limbs flailing, skate bag falling from his shoulder.

“Son of a b***h.”

“Wow, are you trying to take yourself out of the competition? You’re gonna end up busting your own knee at this rate,” Ethan huffed in disbelief as he watched the dramatic display of Emry trying to get into the door as he approached. He was there for practice as well. Clearly. But Emry was a bit smaller than him, so he wasn’t surprised that he was having trouble with the door.

“You okay though? I’d offer you some ice for any injuries, but it looks like there’s plenty to go around,” he smiled warmly, if not a bit teasingly, despite the clear concern in his eyes. He was worried about Emry hurting himself! But he also wasn’t there to baby him.

“Let me try,” he suggested after holding out a hand to help his competition and friend up from the ground. Or not, if he wanted to brush him off. Ethan moved to the door and gave it a gentle tug.

Oh… he would need more leverage than that.

“Are you sure it’s not just locked?” he grimaced, but doubted that was the case with the amount of ice that seemed to be encasing the building. “Are there people in there??” he asked with increased alarm. Surely not! At least he hoped not.

“Go ******** yourself,” Emry wheezed from the ground—not hostile, exactly, but certainly moody. Most of the people around the rink were familiar with his crabby attitude by now, so it probably wouldn’t do much more than amuse Ethan.

Emry refused the helping hand and clambered back onto his feet on his own, wiggling the toes of his hurt foot to ensure that he hadn’t done any actual damage. He brushed snow off of himself, then released a snort when Ethan’s efforts offered no better results. The doors remained stubbornly closed.

“It’s never locked when I get here in the morning,” Emry grumbled, hoisting his skate bag back onto his shoulder. “It’s the ******** ice freezing it shut. Same thing happened at my apartment the other day. Snowed overnight and froze the door. Called the land lord but he couldn’t be assed to get there that early, so I called emergency services and had the fire department drop by.”

Hazel eyes glanced off to the side, feigning curiosity for their surroundings. The ground was covered in snow. Emry kicked at a clump of it, watching it break apart beneath his shoe.

Emry’s crabby attitude absolutely did amuse Ethan. But given the current circumstances, he doubted saying anything about it would do anything but anger the other teenager.

But what he couldn’t quite ignore was the comment about calling the fire department for the issue of his apartment door being frozen over.

Oh. I see. Did the fire department happen to help? Are you suggesting we call the fire department now to have them come out and help? I can call. Or would you prefer if I just call my brother instead?”

He was definitely teasing this time, but he reached out to try and tug on the frozen door again, only to quickly let go, worried that he might end up hurting his hand, despite being gloved, if it was that cold.

Emry grumbled something that sounded like “don’t know what the ******** you’re talking about,” huffing out a white puff of breath.

He kept his gaze averted, glaring at a stick of ice sparkling among the snow cover. Not a stick, actually. A flower of some sort. Either way it was annoying. They couldn’t get inside and now Ethan was going to be a pain in the a** about his older brother who, yes, did show up that time Emry called emergency services about his apartment door, but that hadn’t been his intention (more like a wild hope), and if Glenn Gale potentially showing up happened to be the point of mentioning it now he certainly wasn’t going to admit it.

With a careless shrug, Emry snarled, “Do what you want, I don’t care.” Except he followed that with, “No point calling the whole ******** department when all we need is someone to get the door open.”

For all they knew, someone inside might’ve already called about it.

(Emry did not all himself anymore wild hope.)

Ethan snorted and rolled his eyes and then dropped his bag to the ground so he could place his hands on his hips and stare helplessly at the frozen door. He knew Glenn was likely busy with studying for classes or lifting weights or tending to his little trees or whatever it was he did, but he also knew that his brother would immediately drop everything to come help if he was asked.

It was both endearing and annoying.

And a part of him didn’t actually think Emry was good enough for someone as annoyingly pure as his brother. Jack, sure. But Jack had a strict over twenty-one rule or something.

“Normally I would be all for trying to bust open the doors so we can practice but… is it going to really be worth it? If anyone is inside, they would have called for help already, wouldn’t they? And if they’re too indisposed to call for help, then we should call the whole fire department.”

But Emry probably didn’t think about that because he was too goo-goo eyed for someone who, as obnoxious as his brother could be, was out of Emry’s league. Obviously. Glenn was a Gale.

“I doubt anyone’s indisposed,” Emry argued. “It happens fast. The ice. The snow or whatever, I don’t know. It’s all bullshit. If you’re going to call them, then call them, otherwise tell your brother to get his a** here. We’re wasting time just standing around.”

Emry crossed his arms over his chest and kicked at more snow.

After changing coaches and moving to Destiny City for training, he’d heard rumors about this place. Most cities had their quirks, but Destiny City took normal oddities and cranked them up to a thousand. It hadn’t bothered him before, he’d actually thought it might be a nice change of pace, but when it interfered with his training was where he drew the line.

If this was a continuous prank, it wasn’t funny. If it was real, it was bullshit. Emry would be furious about it either way.
