Yngvara 1
With the Solstice behind them, the Ild'vann had moved further into the winter season with a renewed sense of self and remembrance. The reinvigorated village carried memories of those who had been lost on the Mountain, as well as a love for those who survived and had been born in their new home. What had once been the most terrifying season for their people was now made of joy and it didn't stop once the year shifted.
Nights came quick now and Yngvara knew they didn't have much time left before the festivities would start. Her mother had made sure to invite her Aunt, Uncle and cousins which meant their house was near bursting at the seams, but for good reason. Right now they were catching up and enjoying a meal together, but soon enough they would need to go down to the great hall with the rest of the village.
"Silfi! Rhidian! Skynd deg!" When she walked into the rear hall of their home Yngvara pulled up short. Just...what in the seven hells was she looking at?

Silfi 1
Whose idea was it to put her in charge of costumes?! She'd never sewn a day in her life! Silfi looked over the hides sprawled out on the ground infront of her and then at the half-formed costume drapped over her younger sister. The hide was meant to hide her which it did, but it was also supposed to have a 'spooky' air to it with the horned headpiece she added to it and it just....looked bad.
And then Yngvara was there and she could have cried. "I'm sorry! I'm trying but-" She motioned to it. "-If you want something better then do it yourself!" Her fingers were already bandaged and bloody anyway!
She was supposed to make one for all of the younger members of the family and - excluding Ziya and Yngvara, who no longer counted - that was six. Herself, her sisters and cousins. This was madness!

Rhidian 1
Wisely, Rhidian chose to keep her mouth shut. She'd been her sister's mannequin for the better part of a month now and after getting jabbed by pins - sometimes accidentally, sometimes on purpose - she'd learned that her opinions weren't always wanted. When she turned to look at her older sister it was through the eye sockets of a cloven beast's skull. The costume was meant to look as close to the creature as possible, which wasn't too far off, but the deadline had caused Silfi to panic. And when she panicked....Well, it was a lost cause then.
"Maybe we should just use the skulls and some cloaks?" With Yngvara there she felt a little braver, but Rhidian's younger frame was also hidden underneath layers of hide. If her sister wanted to get at her she'd have to work for it.

Riya 1
She had been excited to get the invite from Sylv and so had convinced the whole family that a visit was in order. Even if her husband didn't like it he would have no choice in the matter. The boys would also do well to simply shut up and go. Of course it meant st least one of the boys was bundled a bit more than the rest.
Now they were settled in for the most part and things were so lively. It made her smile. She was reminded of spending time at her uncles place when she was younger.
Riya followed the noise of Yng yelling. It took her through the house to the back. Seeing her eldest niece had stopped she got closer. She paused just behind the girl as she saw the other two. She adored all of her nieces. "Oh my.." her comment was meant in reference to Silfi's reaction but it could be used for the costume that the other was in.

Yngvara 2
Seriously? "These were supposed to be finished yesterday, Silfi," Yngvara groused. And now she was trying to toss it around like she didn't have the time? She'd had an entire season to make six costumes-
The voice behind her caught Yngvara off guard and she turned toward it. "Sorry for the noise, Tante." How loud had she gotten? Had anyone else heard her? The normally quiet huntress felt her cheeks warm at the thought. "We're having some last minute issues, but we'll be down soon."Looking around the room, Yngvara spotted what looked like finished works near the back and gestured toward them. “How many have you finished? Is this the last one?”

Silfi 2
Ignoring her older sister entirely, Silfi stood up from her stool and looked pleadingly at her Auntie. “Can you sew? At all? I really need some help and not-“ Then she turned to Yngvara with a bite to her words, “-someone breathing down my neck! Snapping at me isn’t going to make it go any faster!” She already felt bad enough and having the ‘perfect daughter’ jumping down her throat wasn’t helping!
“If that was going to work don’t you think I would have tried, Rhidian? It’s not that simple! They have to be made of fresh hides.” Seriously, did her sister not pay attention at all? “I just have the one that Rhidian’s wearing now to finish up and this one-,” She held up one that had been laid out on her table, “-the rest are in the back.”

Rhidian 2
When Iriyana poked around Yngvara, Rhidian raised a hand to wave at her. Of course, that hand was buried underneath fur, leather and cloth, making the action a barely noticeable one. She shuffled from one foot to the other with a sigh. Yngvara could be as demanding as their mother when she wanted to be, with a hard edge like Uncle Ergon and that…wasn’t good around Silfi sometimes. Why am I here? Why couldn’t Rhiannon do this instead? Or Revna? “…Maybe we should be quieter? If mor hears us she’ll come in to check on things and then-“ Rhidian drew a finger across her throat; or, well, tried to.

Riya 2 She noticed Yngvara looking embarrassed and she had to chuckle. "Don't worry little one, hunter's ears hear more than most." She'd have heard them even if they were talking normally. "You aren't too loud." Her changed eyes moved over to look at Silfi as the girl asked her if she could sew. Her head tilted forward a bit as her brows rose some. "Well, yes but it doesn't look pretty. There's a reason your Uncle's clothing isn't homemade." She laughed a little then shook her head. "And I'll have you know that Yngvara isn't the only perfect daughter here. You all are." She nodded. As Rhidian waved - or at least she thought she saw a wave under all that - Iriyana moved into the room as she slipped past her eldest niece. "Well.. how about we all work together to get it done?"

Yngvara 3
"That's what I'm worried about." Her mother could hear a roati breathing in the snow so the fact that she wasn't here yet was a miracle in itself. Maybe they assumed that Iriyana had it handled?
"If we split into pairs we'll be able to get it done faster." And maybe then they wouldn't want to stab each other with sewing needles. Yngvara herself had little experience with mending and stitchwork. At best she could move larger needles through leathers to create bags and temporary housing on the trail. This though...this was a little more delicate.

Silfi 3
"That sounds good to me as long as I don't have to work with her." The young hybrid was at her wits end with her big sister at the moment and any more prodding would definitely end with her leaving the room all together. Taking a shaky breath, Silfi pushed away from the project she was still working on and pulled up the other cloak.
"It's easier if someone wears it while the other works on it so you can see the shape. So if Rhidian keeps hers on then one of you can wear this one and the other can help stitch it together."

Rhidian 3 As if I ever had a choice. She would have much rather been the one to sew, considering she actually had some talent with it, but rather than risk being verbally attacked again Rhidian just stood there. At least now Silfi was starting to calm down. But then, a thought occurred to her. "Tante, have you ever been to a hogmanay festival?" They had one every year, but even with the village being more accepting of outsiders it was still a rare occurrence to see one there during events. The possibility of other festivals like it, though, was still out there and then there was Rhidian's youth to consider. She may not have remembered seeing her Aunt in previous years.

Riya 3
She was pleased that the girls at least agreed that working together would be a good idea. However, at Silif's suggestion she looked at her youngest niece and shook her head. "I think the older two should put them on and then Rhidian and I can do the sewing." It would give the younger one a break from being under all those layers.
She motioned for Rhidian to take off the costume. "Come on out of there. I'd like to see your beautiful face some time today." Riya then looked at Yngvara with a smile. "You grab the other one that needs doing and put it on so I can work on it." Since the girls were getting fed up with one another she wondered if she might need to sew the one that would go on Silfi instead and let Rhidian work on the other. Then again she worried about everyone getting poke with needles.
Hearing the question from the youngest one she turned her attention that way before giving her head a shake. "I have not. I was never able to make it up during those times."

Rhidian 4
"Really?" She hadn't meant for her voice to get as high as it did and if Rhidian could have been seen under her costume her cheeks would be burning. Thankyouthankyouthankyou- The hybrid was all too eager to slip out of her trappings and hand them over to Silfi instead. Her hair, which had once been so neatly tucked into a stylized bun, was frizzled in every direction.
Her smile was absolutely beaming, though, and her heterochromatic gaze sparkled. Freedom had never felt so free. While helping her older sister into the costume, Rhidian supplied, "It's a celebration to welcome the new year. All of the children wear costumes to hide their true forms and then they're beaten with sticks."

Silfi 4
"Except they don't use actual sticks anymore." As much as Silfi didn't want her hair to look like Rhidian's she slipped the costume on anyway and passed her sewing kit over to her sister. Once it was well and truly settled she stood up straighter to give Rhidian full access. "Well, not thick ones. Last year we just made bundles of hay and smacked each other around with them. It doesn't hurt." Anymore. She'd had a few years where she didn't want to participate because Silfi would swear they'd beat her near an inch of her life. Her mother, of course, had pointed out the lack of bruising, but she knew the truth!
"It's to scare away the bad spirits and banish bad luck."

Yngvara 4Walking past the group, she maneuvered herself through the stack of ready made costumes to the last of the projects. Slipping it over her head was a task in itself, since Silfi had managed to get the fabric underneath the skull so tight, but eventually Yngvara got it on. When she was situated, she walked back to them and took up her spot in front of Iriyana. "It's always fun. There's a song we sing when they're 'chased' and then they get sweets afterward." Or as sweet as Ild'vann cuisine got. It was nowhere near the pastries of Zidel, but sweet, frozen mammu fat had it's own appeal.
