Tama understood what ‘via tablet’ meant.

He just didn’t so much as give a rat’s a** about it.

If he wanted to walk into a man’s office to thank him for throwing an excellent party, the Mauvian was going to well and do it. It didn’t matter how many times and using what capitals one said not to in.

Besides, he was baring gifts and who would say no to a cat with gifts?

Tama had found the best wine he had on offer and had had quite a few as he was preparing for his new venture. He had to find the best wine for it. He’d tried this one awhile back and he was sure it was a red worthy of a general’s tastes.

As he carried it in his arms — having decided to do so in his human form so as to not mess with the red bow on the bottle my putting it in sub-space — he wondered just what had happened yesterday at the party. It had been quite wonderful, but he hadn’t had as much to drink having learned his leason (at least, for a time) from Faustite’s prior party. He had hoped to do some real people watching and he had done some, but he hadn’t gleaned what he’d hoped. (Correcting one obtuse lieutenant had taken up mush of his time.) He was becoming a connoisseur of office gossip and hadn’t gotten his fill.

Well, perhaps he could get a little out of Aqua, though he doubted it. The man seemed to know how to stay aloof like the best Mauvians. That didn’t mean he wouldn’t try.

Either way, he had a gift and no invitation so he knocked on the office door.

Aquamarine groaned.

He had no idea why he’d bothered to come to the Dark Kingdom today, except that Jet was always here doing something or another, and Aquamarine could be a bit of a masochist for the right person (read: Jet). If not for that, he could have been lying in bed dozing, or draping himself across the couch zoning out in front of the television. But no, he was here, at his desk, staring moodily at the files he’d pulled up on the wonky piece of s**t that passed for a serviceable computer in the castle.

Or he had been. When the knock sounded against his office door, Aquamarine had his head on his desk, staring to the side of the room, where a privacy screen partially blocked a king-sized bed from view. (With Jet occupying another office now, Aquamarine had upgraded from the cramped double bed they’d once squeezed into the corner.) There wasn’t anything stopping him from dragging himself over there for a nap.

Except for that damned knock. And the energy signature out in the hall, which he wasn’t able to distinguish properly in his current state. Was it a General? A Sovereign? It wasn’t Jet. Aquamarine would never mistake him for anyone else.

He groaned again.

“Come in,” he said, not as snappy as usual, in case it was someone important. The sound of his own voice made the ache behind his eyes throb.

“General Aquamarine.”

Tama said as he was called in, a wide grin on his face.

“I thought I’d come here to thank you — personally — for hosting such a fine party.”

The Mauvian looked around the room. He’d been in Fasutite’s office numerous times and he liked to compare how other generals decorated theirs. His gaze went to the privacy screen, though he couldn’t make out what was behind it without moving away from Aqua’s desk and he had a gift to give.

“This is for you.”

He held out the large bottle of wine with a rather garish bow attached.

Aquamarine groaned a third time.

Noone important. Just a cat. A human cat, but still a cat. The one whose name he hadn’t bothered to learn despite being in the vicinity of him a few times. Was he one of Faustite’s… male things? (Aquamarine refused to call them boys.) There were too many of them. Aquamarine would never understand why anyone would want to surround themselves with so many sources of aggravation.

It was on the tip of his tongue to swear and demand that the cat leave. Thanks were not necessary, especially when done personally; the less people he had in his office, the better. Aquamarine only remembered parts of yesterday’s party, mainly sitting in uncomfortable and occasionally irritating conversation. He remembered the wine, and the food. He remembered a bit of dancing with Jet. Maybe others. Had he danced with others? He sort of remembered dropping into bed last night, but most of what occurred in between was a blur.

His response was lost before he’d even found the words. Aquamarine stared at the bottle of wine, eyes trained on the bow, then the label, then the hands offering it to him, then the label again.

“Oh, thank ********,” he said, snatching the wine away from the cat before digging around in his desk drawers for a corkscrew. He found one hiding beneath some post it notes and a few boxes of paper clips, wielding it with an expression that, on Aquamarine, looked like relief but was probably the closest to unbridled joy he would ever show.

He made quick work of the cork, then drank, and drank, and drank, not even bothering to remove the bow. He wiped his mouth on the sleeve of his jacket when he paused to breathe, eyeing the cat over the bottle.

“I don’t need your gratitude,” Aquamarine grumbled, “but I’d rather be drunk again than hung over.” He paused for a moment, seeming to consider something, then added, “Don’t tell Jet. Or the Queen. Or your burning monster man-child, assuming you’re one of his. I’ve lost track of who’s who to who.”

Tama watched in mild amusement as Aqua examined then took and then drank from the bottle.

It seems his bringing of the wine bottle gift was a good idea. He had thought so, but not how much. He was always one to make sure not to show up empty-handed. He never understood why his presence was not enough of a present. Either way, he had observed the general drinking wine at the party. Jet had delivered him some and Tama had been sure to note the type. He tried to gauge Aqua’s response, but it was hard to tell when he was naturally a bit grumpy.

At least, Aqua didn’t seem angry. Even with gifts, he’d have still pissed off Faustite in a similar situation.

“I appreciate it nonetheless.”

Tama grinned at the mention of Faustite. Burning monster man-child was now his new favorite Faustite title. “I wouldn’t tell a soul. Certainly not Faustite. I’m ’one of his’, but he isn’t my keeper.”

He’s the one who needs a keeper,” Aquamarine countered.

He paused to drink more. The wine was fine. Good — as far as he could tell, anyway. Despite his upbringing, he’d never bothered to determine what made a good wine. Wine was wine was wine. The only purpose it served for him was to dull the senses and make all the s**t the Negaverse put him through more tolerable. Taste was irrelevant.

“While we’re on the subject…” he continued when he took another break to breathe. “What the ******** so great about him that he’s got so many of you up his a**? Vice versa too, like, what the ********. What’s your deal? I usually don’t give a s**t but none of you make any ******** sense and you caught me at the wrong time — right time? Whatever. Just ******** spill.”

Aquamarine reclined in his cushy desk chair, less put together than usual. The lack of cape wasn’t uncommon, nor was the unbuttoned jacket, but few people saw his hair so disheveled outside of battle, and the purpling marks that now littered his pale throat were usually well hidden from his peers and clearly had not been put there by any Senshi or Knight.

Tama couldn’t help but smirk at Aqua’s remark. Faustite sure did need someone to watch him. Maybe more than one with the trouble he’d gotten himself in at times.

“The Queen herself assigned me to him.” Tama said sardonically and drew a circle with his claw on the desk. “So if she wants me up his a**, who am I to disobey.”

It seemed he didn’t need to gauge this conversation with Aqua too hard. He could get his gossip in here.

“What’s our deal? Well, some have formal arrangements. You have seen the rings. Others just want to be around power. Others simply have no concern for their personally safety or if they get burned. For some, it’s all three.”

Tama was firmed seated on Aqua’s desk at this point. He purposely didn’t mention which category he himself fell in — or if he fell in any of them at all.

“But what about you? I’m not the only one that’s in the circle of a general-king.”

Aquamarine pulled a face: brows lowered, nose crinkled, mouth twisted in disgust. He feigned nausea and gagged audibly.

“Sorry, I just threw up a little in my mouth,” he lied. Aquamarine adjusted his position, folding his arms over his chest with the bottle of wine still held in one hand. He eyed the mauvian like he was trying to decode something and had grown annoyed by his inability to do so. “The rings make even less sense than whatever the ******** the rest of them get out of it. I don’t know who all’s involved in that bullshit but I know there’s more than one, which means none of it’s legal, which means none of it’s real, which means there’s not a ******** point to any of it.”

Aquamarine paused to chug more of the wine. He wondered how quickly he could get himself drunk again. Then he wondered if he might end up embarrassing himself in the process and decided to slow down, thunking the bottle onto his desk.

“The difference between you and the others on your team and me is that I’m not in any ******** circle,” Aquamarine said. Wine clung to his lips; he lifted an arm to wipe the residue off on the sleeve of his jacket. “Jet doesn’t have a circle. He assists the Queen with GenOps. He doesn’t go around picking favorites; it wouldn’t be fair to everyone else in the ******** division.

“Am I special? Sure,” Aquamarine allowed, effecting a careless shrug. “We joined together. We know each other's strengths and weaknesses. We’ve trained together and fought in tandem for almost a decade. I know him and he knows me. There isn’t anyone else in this entire ******** organization who can keep up with him the way I do, and unless they’ve seen what I’ve seen and done what I’ve done they won’t ever be able to.”

Tama grinned at the general’s revulsion. He clearly wanted that part understood. That he didn’t just dislike it, but found it distasteful.

Information was information, after all.

“Ah. Jet doesn’t have a circle. Doesn’t pick favorites.” Tama intoned with a slight lilt, a slight unbelief. Everyone had favorites. To the Mauvian, no human was impartial. Perhaps a youma could be with its blunted emotions. Even a Mauvian could be, if they kept their independence. But a human? No. Not in his experience anyway.

“But you are special. Even if it is for practical reasons.” Though Tama was beginning to doubt it was only those reasons. “Knowing him so well and he you. Perhaps there will be others. Power attracting others and all that.”

“Jet doesn’t give a ******** about that bullshit,” Aquamarine said with a dismissive flick of one hand. “Those hypothetical power hungry ******** can salivate over him all they want. It won’t earn them anything.”

If Aquamarine had any doubts, he didn’t show them. His voice was strong and steady, if a bit thick with fatigue. His posture hadn’t changed much: not entirely stiff, but not entirely relaxed either, sprawled in his chair without the appearance of laziness. He gave no indication of discomfort with the topic and offered only as much information as he would share with anyone else.

“You’re welcome to try, if that’s what you’re getting at,” he offered, eyeing the mauvian with an indifferent frown. “If Faustite’s not enough for you, or whatever. If power’s what attracts you, go on, try collecting the other Sovereigns. Jet might seem easy because he usually has a more gentle touch and he’s only a bit less new to the gig than Faustite, but the only favors he’ll be trading are traitors’ heads and enemy corpses.”
