When Siel made the trek to Belrea he assumed he’d be spending more time with his older sister than he was. In actuality the Bard was doing his best to avoid getting in the way as she and her husband did their best coping with a pair of infants. Siel had gotten a letter explaining their condition and how much work it took to keep them healthy but seeing it up close…was a harrowing thing. Yona may have faired better than Zev, though not by much, and their bodies were so tiny that Siel was terrified to hold them. What if he dropped the brittle things? One wrong move and he might very well snap a bone.
And their breathing. Was he supposed to be able to hear them like that? Spirits, he had no idea how they were holding up.
With things so tense back in their home, Siel had it in his mind that he wanted to do something special for his nephews. While he knew he wouldn’t be able to separate his sister from her offspring, not long enough to relax anyway, he thought he might be able to do it for the boys. It couldn’t have been easy, especially with all they’d endured anyway. His plan had been to pick them up from their studies, but..well…Arden had gotten sent home early. Again. So he really didn’t want to be around when Ygraine found out.
Still, he waited outside for Colm all the same.

Belrea wasn't so bad. Not really. Then again, Colm felt like he probably inherited some of his father's... gentler sensibilities, because he'd never really been suited to a life of travel when he was young. So while it seemed like his brother would burst out of his skin, having to sit still and learn in their classes, Colm took to it naturally - he'd always been quick to learn. It ... helped that school, right now, was preferable to home.
Younger siblings... Colm never imagined having more than just Arden. It hadn't been so scary, back then, when he didn't even realize his father was ill. But as he grew, and Asa got worse, he recognized that what ailed his father was more serious than recurring colds and coughs - that it was a sickness of the blood, that he and Arden had seemingly avoided by sheer, dumb luck. He knew his mother was hounding his father for children. It was a topic that came up when they thought he wasn't listening, distracted by his work or play with Arden, but - he heard it. The quiet arguments.
Until his mother was pregnant again, and then the babies were here and ...
Best not to think about the babies, not right now. Colm let out a slow breath, then briskly took the steps down from the school's exit, pausing when a bright haired figure came into view.
Siel was his uncle, but he didn't share any actual blood with his mom - which as a kid Colm had thought was the reason why they didn't see him that much. He was older now, knew better, but still found it strangely difficult to understand how it all worked. (If blood didn't matter, and he was Ygraine's brother because they had the same fathers, blood or no blood, then why had mom decided it was so important to have actual children with Asa--)
He shook that thought off and loped down to his uncle, giving him a small, polite nod in greeting. He liked Siel. He'd probably only responded to his uncle in grunts and nods and hums so far, since their family was so big and one on one time was such a luxury, but - he liked him. He liked rocks and gems too, though Colm liked the smooth ones he could rub his fingers over, not the raw, chunky ones Siel wore.

"Spirits, how much taller are you planning to get, Colm?" Even if he had seen his nephew just yesterday they had all been sitting first in the dining area and then in the sitting room. Watching him now felt like he was seeing first hand the process of growth and it felt a little daunting. The last time he'd gotten to spend any real time with Colm he'd been small enough to laugh at Siel's dumb jokes and be interested in whatever sort of rock the older hybrid showed up with.
Would that still work? Or was he too 'mature' for that sort of thing now?
"So, I've been thinking. If you aren't up to anything today maybe you'd want to hang out? I'm still getting used to the city and I just know I'll get lost."

(2/10) Colm glanced down at himself, as if his gaze could assess how tall he was. Then he leveled a flat, amused look at his uncle. "I don't think I'll ever be mom sized." He said, voice monotone. It wasn't out of disinterest, or that he didn't want to talk, but simply a manner of speaking he'd taken to over the years. He didn't enunciate much unless he truly cared about whether or not his words were heard.
Thankfully, Siel didn't seem to dwell on it, and instead got to the point of his impromptu visit to Colm's school. He was ... surprised, but honestly thankful, and more than a little intrigued. Why him? Why not Arden? Arden was so much more like Siel, energetic and social, if a bit chaotic.
It made more sense that Siel wanted a guide; though Colm thought better of Siel than to assume that was the only reason. "Arden knows more places that are interesting. But sure. What did you have in mind?
He didn't want to be back home for a while anyway.

This kid acts like an eighty year old geezer. Sheesh, Siel knew that Ygraine was a stick in the mud and that her husband was a prude, but he'd expected a little pep from Colm. He could be shy, a little backwards, whatever; just not....this. It was almost like the boys had developed in wildly different ways instead of sharing a shred of normalcy between them.
"Yeah, well, I'm not here for Arden, am I? I came for you!" Siel reached forward, clearly intending on wrapping his arm around Colm's shoulder before he stopped at the last second. "Woah - uh, sorry - you probably don't...like that kind of...thing." So, instead of going through with it, Siel gave Colm's shoulder a little fist bump.
"Come on, let's get a move on. I'm afraid if we stick around for too long your mentors - professors? - might think I'm trying to sell you something."

(3/10) And didn't that feel good? Colm assessed the feeling, somewhat surprised at himself. He'd never really cared about attention from his parents and family before, but there was a feeling of warmth and happiness he felt at having his uncle seek him out, specifically. So, when Siel faltered at giving him a one-armed hug, Colm turned his head to look at the fist awkwardly bumping his shoulder, snorting softly. "You know who my brother is. If I didn't like hugs, I wouldn't have survived childhood." Colm pointed out, with a smirk.
He took Siel's suggestion and nodded, reaching to lightly grip the loose cloth of his sleeve so he could pull him to follow, letting go once Siel got the message. "Did mother put you up to this? Don't get me wrong. I'm happy." He said, with that same flat, monotone voice. "But I'm surprised you'd want one-on-one time. Or ... is it male bonding? Because I'm older now?"

For a moment Siel just paused, seemingly caught in his awkward little group before his gaping maw turned into a full on grin. "Eyyyy!" That fist bump turned into a full bear of a side hug and the hybrid happily put his head against his nephew's before legging the poor boy go. "That's on me for assuming." For some reason Siel had always just assumed his nephew was like his father in that regard. The one time Siel had tried to latch onto Asa the man became as stick as a tree trunk and he was afraid the man's heart had stopped.
"Your mother? Nah. I'm actually avoiding her." He fiddled with a loose ring on his thumb while he walked. "I get the feeling most days I'm not her favorite sibling to have over and...well, while I was on my way to see you I got word Arden was sent home early so...yeah. Gonna let that breath for a while."
Siel didn't think he would ever truly get used to Belrean streets. They were so far removed from anything he knew in Matori and even when he ventured North to see Sol it wasn't like this. It almost felt as if the buildings could swallow him whole at any moment. "Male bonding? I guess? It's not because you're older, though; I still would have come if you were tiny. I just thought you might like the break. Maybe someone to talk to, something warm to eat and a way to blow off some steam? Can't be easy being the oldest."

(4/10) Colm stifled a surprised little giggle at the sudden hug, but wound his thin arm around his uncle, patting his back, briefly, before they pulled away again. He understood why. In a lot of respects, Colm was subdued and withdrawn, compared to his brother and parents, but he would always try to make exceptions for his family. Even family that he didn't see that often. The same couldn't be said of other people, like potential friends or classmates. If they tried to hug him, he'd probably shrink into himself, or give them a long, judging stare until they shrank back.
Then, Siel continued, and Colm briefly looked startled, blinking at Siel. Avoiding was... understandable, Colm was doing the same thing lately. But the rest (other than Arden being sent home) was surprising to him. He felt compelled to defend his mother, but he stamped out the impulse. He didn't want to get in a disagreement he barely understood, and drive away a family member who was willingly seeking him out.
"I would like a break." Colm finally agreed, quietly, as if admitting it out loud was something sinful. "Things are frustrating and tedious, and I'm tired of it." Then, as if remembering himself, he added, half-heartedly. "In classes."
He turned to look away from his uncle, instead considering the many businesses. "If we go to the edge of town, there are... amusement shops? Like axe throwing. Or ring toss." There were a lot of festivals throughout the year, especially outside the cities by Geian farms, but there was a permanent fairground for tourists. Siel had probably been there before, but Colm had fond memories of the place, and they hadn't been there as a family in a long, long time.

"Yeah, I kind of figured they were." And then Siel added, "Your classes." He wasn't about to prod any further than he already had, and as long as Colm got some sort of freedom from today then Siel was fine without prodding at all. All he wanted to do was give his nephew some kind of stress relief.
"Axe throwing sounds like fun." He remembered being on a pier once, when he was much smaller than his nephew was now, and helping to throw spears with Morain. It was an absolute mess, but a fun one. Of course he'd seen it in passing more than a few times since his stay, he still had to work after all and what better place to play than with a constant audience, but Siel had never actually played any of the games.
"I've got coin enough for the both of us and an afternoon to play with. Let's eat until we're sick, throw a couple weapons around, and maybe win one of those cheap swords that'll break the moment you hit someone with it?"

(5/10) "I know who to hit with it." Colm responded, a bit too gleefully (in his usual monotone way). He spun on his heel, taking a glance at the street signage to find the right direction to go off in, and then he was leading his uncle along with all the confidence of a native Belrean. As they got closer to the fairgrounds, the crowd around them turned into other foreigners, like themselves - which was understandable. As he'd said, this was more of a touristy area.
It cost a few coins to get in, which Colm did feel guilty for - he'd seen his mother fretting over money enough in his lifetime to feel a cold dread any time he had to dole out the coins, even if she got a horribly sad look on her face when she noticed it. He fought to keep his expression blank as his uncle paid, and once done gripped his arm to pull him along. The axes in question were usually a big hit, but they were here early enough in the day that there were more younglings playing around, so it wasn't crowded here - enough that the attendant perked up out a sleepy daze when they came closer.
The axe was dull, old and a bit chipped, and felt awkward in his hands as he lifted it. He looked sidelong at his uncle as the man was given his own axe. "We should probably avoid mentioning we came here today." He said, nonchalantly. He considered getting souvenirs for the twins, but he thought admitting he'd gone to the fair wasn't worth the delight of new gifts. Getting things wasn't really a concession prize for not being able to go out.

Oh now that was unsettling. Siel just gave a nervous laugh and kept walking, masking his awkwardness with talk of the town as they passed. While he didn't jabber away the walk he did ask questions when it came to certain streets, businesses and the like; little things to remember the next time he got out. Was he likely to stroll into an apothecary? No, but he did show interest in the strange plant that grew in the window. Even more so with the portly woman who tended to it. She was plain enough if one looked past the bulbous way her right eye seemed to hang from her head. Was that an experiment gone wrong or a birth defect?
He'd have to pin that one for later.
Paying the entry fee was done with the same ease as breathing. Siel had no reason to hoard his coin and thusly had little concept of budgeting. He couldn't take it with him so why not spend it! Especially when he didn't have to worry about paying for an inn; that's what rooming with siblings was all about!
"Mmms the word." The axe took some getting used to, but Siel felt confident that he might not accidentally hit his nephew with it. "Wanna go first?"

(6/10) At least they both were equal parts awkward with an axe! Colm was taller than his father, but had inherited his petite frame nonetheless, and his arms simply weren't made for throwing. Still, when he threw the axe it at least hit the target, if not in any of the places that would get him points.
After the first two throws, Colm relaxed and began to smile, arms aching and browline sweating, but mood much improved from his earlier stress. They finished their throws, and Colm turned to Siel with a tired, but pleased smile, reaching to knock his knuckles against his shoulder. "Arden would LOVE this." He said, thoughts going immediately to his little brother. When was the last time they got to come out and just have fun together?

Siel, for all his size and muscle, was a shoddy marksman. While he had the strength to throw the axe it went wide the first time, causing the game attendant to squeal out and after a brief moment Siel couldn't help laughing. The sound was so childish to come from such a gruff face! And honestly, just seeing the tension in Colm's frame start to ebb away was better than actually hitting anything.
Over time he hit the target, even got close to an impressive toss, but for the most part Siel postured. He tried a few trick shots, hoping to impress the lad, and for a moment he actually had himself thinking they might land.
"Then bring him! I think he'd really like it." Siel reached over and gave Colm's shoulder a playful shove. "It'd be good for you guys."

(7/10) It would. It would be nice to invite his brother out for bonding, but he wasn't really... sure where they stood anymore. It had been about a week since his brother stopped showing up to the academy, and all without saying a word to Colm about it. Once, he'd have expected Arden to come to him with his thoughts, or at least use him as a bouncing board for what he was considering - but he'd just done it.
Worse than that, he was pretending to come to class like nothing had changed. Did he think none of his classmates would come to Colm to ask where he'd gone? Arden was a fun person to be around, it would make sense that his absence would be felt.
Maybe Arden had gotten tired of Colm always backing their parents up. Maybe he knew he would try to convince him to stick it out, for mom's sake.
Maybe having his overly frugal and responsible brother skip class to take him to spend money at the fair would be enough sign of solidarity to convince him to open up?
Best not mention it to Siel. He wouldn't like Ygraine finding out he'd inspired his nephew to become a truant. "Then I should think of an alternative for the twins. I don't want them to be left out." He said, instead, blowing out a huff.

“HELL YEAH!” Siel pumped his fist into the air when his axe slammed into the bullseye, and subsequently slapped both of his thighs before turning that enthusiasm Colm’s way. If he noticed his nephew’s internal struggles he didn’t comment on it, and chose instead to reach over to shake his shoulder. “Whoo, aww man, this is a rush. Maybe I missed my calling. I could have been a fighter, y’know? I could go to war!” In that moment Siel could have burned a building with the fire in his blood, or at the very least taken on a hoard of something. Maybe he could arm wrestle with Arden later or hell, maybe he could shake Ygraine up and wrestle with her? Couldn’t do it with Colm though. Poor kid would snap.
“The twins, huh? I dunno, you could take them over there for darts or something like that. It’s light enough that it won’t tucker ‘em out, but still competitive. You’d have to bank on a good day though which…ugh…is tricky.”
