Mechelen was stronger now. Her dress had changed slightly and her small pathetic tapestry had gotten a little bigger and a little less pathetic…but…only a little.
She was taking a moment for herself, looking at her reflection in the darkened window of a store and twirling around a bit, a smile on her face as she did so.
The petticoat was…really cute…and poofy…she liked the poof a lot and reached up, touching the headdress that she now wore, humming softly.
It wasn’t as comfortable as her last headband…but it looked nice. The whole outfit looked nice.
The feeling of an aura made her head perk up and Mechelen turned around, pleased and surprised that…the aura felt weaker than she was…that.
That would take some getting used to, but she absolutely wasn’t complaining. Taking a moment to trot closer, Mechelen saw a young girl who must have been somewhere near her own age with a cute blue outfit and brown hair. “Hello!” Her eyes lingered for a moment on the wonderfully familiar symbols and her eyes sparkled. “Another Lysithea Page! Hi! I’m Mechelen!”

Some people were saying that it was too early to think about Christmas, that it was time for Thanksgiving, which Almere understood. The only problem was that trying to think about what Thanksgiving creatures she might find was not nearly as interesting as thinking about ice fairies painting everything with frost, or little elves and woodland birds tying up presents to drop down chimneys in a few months. Trying not to think about those things was just making her think about them harder, but she focused so hard that she stuck out her tongue and looked down all the alleyways for a magic turkey, and tried her hardest to figure out how a magic turkey could be anything but lowkey creepy. Maybe the turkey would be one of the monsters, and she’d have to defeat it to get to the cute winter stuff? Instead, she ran into a person. She was a Lysithea knight, Almere could just tell, and unlike her cousins, this one was a girl, like her! She had a blue dress like her, too! “Hi!” she said, practically glowing with excitement. “You look just like a princess!” It seemed to be a theme with Lysithea knights, but she pointed it out anyway. “Your sleeves are so big!” The big sleeves made her look a little bit like a wizard, too.

“You look like a princess too, honestly you could give Cinderella a run for her money!” Mechelen felt herself just beaming, this…was wonderful. Lysithea Knights were wonderful, and they had all been so friendly. Halle had a tough streak to him that she honestly adored, Ngome was sweet, though too old to really be friends with but…
“May I ask how old you are? You seem like you’re around my age…are you still in high school?”
She hoped so…having another friend in this would be amazing.
“If you are, where do you go? I’m at Meadowview!”

“We get the best of both worlds,” said Almere, twirling so her skirt and petticoats flared out when Mechelen told her she looked like a princess, too. “Princesses, and knights! We’re like those girls with swords.” Almere glanced down to the small spoon in her hand, then back up, looking a little shy about the size of her weapon. “Well, I’m new, I think it’s called a Page, right now? But we’ll get there.” The other girl felt stronger than she did. “And I do go to Meadowview! I’m fourteen, I’m a freshman.” She gave another shy glance to the ground, but only for a little bit, because it was hard not to get happy about the thought of having a warrior-princess who was also her school friend. “My name’s Lena!”

“I literally just changed from a Page so…you can absolutely do it, and I can help you if you ever want to practice fighting or just have someone to patrol with you? I’m your girl! I’m sixteen and a junior! My name is Tilly!”
Hesitating for a moment she looked at the Page and wrinkled her nose. “...Did. You’re not the one that I fell through the leaves with…are you? Her name was Lena too…not that it’s an uncommon name I just…that would be pretty amazing, honestly. Like fate.”
She also sounded rather creepy, she knew but…
…Fate.

“My cousins keep telling me I need to work out and practice fighting to get stronger,” said Almere, “Which is probably a good idea? But one of them is being an annoying butt about it, he’s texting me constantly. The other one tricked me into training with him once already, so now?” She shook her head. “I can’t do that stuff too much or it’s like I’m letting them win.” Not that many people brought out Lena’s stubborn side, but the boys could. She could fight monsters, though. That was fine. Although hearing the other girl’s real name snapped her out of any thoughts she had about all that. “Tilly?” she asked. “I remember you! And the leaves!” She’d been looking for magic turkeys, but clearly she’d found something way better. “Fate does exist!”

Fate absolutely did, and Mechelen didn’t wait for any other words before spontaneously hugging the Page, laughing. “Oh my god, this is the most amazing thing ever. I can’t believe this!”
Finally, slowly she registered the part about the cousins and she laughed. “If they’re pressuring you, clearly you just have to get stronger behind their backs and before they do so that you’re the winner. If it’s a competition, they’ll lose! I know I’m excited to see my sparring partner now that I’m…”
Mechelen gestured to herself. “...Not a page anymore. I hope he’s terribly jealous.”
And if he wasn’t…she would just continue to get stronger before him, that was all. Easy peasy.

Almere hugged the other girl right back. She might have even accidentally lifted her feet off the ground a little bit. For some reason, she didn’t feel as heavy as people usually did. “This is all so magical, and wonderful!” she said, looking like she’d just wished on a star and had that wish come true. “I can just tell we’re going to be best friends forever.” Why else would they both be in matching blue dresses, and unicorn knights, and the same height? Why else would they both have fallen through the same leaf pile right after Almere had become a page? Oh, it was perfect. “And on top of being a warrior princess, you’re a genius!” said Almere. “Just because I train doesn’t mean I have to tell them! We could train together sometime.” She didn’t really know any other knights who weren’t her cousins, so that was what it would be! She hoped Mechelen liked her spoon swordplay.

“I know right!” Mechelen grinned broadly and then hesitated, letting her powered form drop after checking to make sure there was nobody else around. “Do you want to come over? It’s still early enough, or we could go and grab some ice cream or something? I know that there’s a place near me who’s doing hot cocoa floats? I’m still assuming you live near me, so…wanna go?”
This was wonderful…this was more fun than training with Halle, more fun than anything, honestly. “We can discuss how we want to beat your cousins and my sparring partner, how we’re going to make them eat their words and become completely stronger than any of them!”

“I like ice cream!” said Almere, and then she powered down right into her school uniform. They could still keep an eye out for any magic on the way over, and there wouldn’t be any risks of parents or anything to overhear them while they were talking about her plans to get stronger than her cousins, and Mechelen’s training partner. All while she had delicious hot chocolate. She was so lucky, and there was a skip in her step as she followed the other girl away.
