My hair is different and so are your eyes! What's going on?!
Kailani had been quietly gathering shells along the shore when the first victim of the pollen came running past, the Matori in a frenzy as she raced towards town with another. The little hybrid had jumped out of the way with a flush, her cheeks warming in surprise as she shied away from the locals who seemed slightly different. Wasn't that one of the helpers at the candy store she enjoyed visiting? She had black hair before though, right? Now all Kailani could do was watch as bright green hair flew behind the Matori's retreating figure. There was something that she had overheard about changing colors and pollen? Did that mean she looked different? Kailani gasped at the very thought before tucking her collection of shells into the little satchel bag she always carried, the hybrid darting away from the main beach to try to find one of the little tidepools by their family home. Would the reflection show something different about her? Oh, she hoped not! The last thing she wanted was for anything to drastically change. The very thought made her stomach twist in knots as she hurried along to check things out.

The pollen that had filled the air yesterday remained of great interest to Gin Ae. He had collected some in a jar before going to bed. Now, with a fresh morning and sunlight, he took the jar outside for further inspection. He sat near one of the little tidepools in front of the home and opened the jar carefully. He giggled as he sank a hand into the fluffy powder and wiggled his fingers. He'd never seen so much in the air before! He pinched a little between his fingers and sprinkled it into the little pool at his side. The powder floated along the surface until curious tide fish snapped at it thinking it was food. Huh. He was going to have to find something for them to actually eat later...

When Kailani approached the tidepool she had not been expecting to see her brother. "Gin Ae!" She gasped, the name as soft as a gentle breeze, but even as gently as she spoke the hybrid moved quickly. "You should be careful..." She managed, her cheeks flushed as she realized what he was doing with the pollen. When had he even stored it? Should it have surprised her? Probably not considering how most of their family loved collecting strange things. Still! It was dangerous!
Kailani had to take a deep breath, forcing herself to speak even though usually she was much quieter and more willing to let her siblings do whatever they wanted without protest. As long as they weren't hurting anything then why not let them have fun while she preferred just watching from the side? In this situation though there was concern written all over her face, the hybrid still remembering the panicked Matori that she had passed on the way here. "It changed some Matori, what if it changes your appearance?"

Though soft, the voice of his sister still caught his attention. Gin Ae looked up curiously and gave her a pleasant little smile. Once he noticed her concerned expression though, his smile quickly fell. "Careful?" he repeated just as softly with a look at the jar. His brow knit with confusion as his sister explained what the problem was. His eyes widened slightly and he raised his hand to take a close look at his fingers that had been messing with the pollen. It looked the same as the rest of his skin... Once he was sure his hand was fine, he pointed to the little pool he had sprinkled the pollen into. "Does it change fishies?" he asked, concerned about the little creatures nibbling the pollen.

"Oh, no." Kailani whispered quietly, her gaze full of worry as she noticed the fish nibbling on the pollen. "I hope not, they'll be so confused if their scales suddenly change." She admitted as she crouched down by the waters edge, the girl taking a risk by scooping out some of the pollen and scaring the fish away for a moment. As usual the girl was more concerned with the innocent creatures than with her own skin, her brow furrowed as she concentrated and continued working to clear the pollen from the water.
"So you see any other pollen on the water? The fish seem okay, they're still swimming and similar to before. They've always been yellow with blue stripes and those smaller ones are usually orangish." She commented as she quickly wiped her damp fingers on her skirts, hoping to get the pollen on the silk material and off of her own skin. If they changed colors then what would happen to her? Would she be pale like some of the foreigners she saw from Sauti before or more blue like the local Matori? Kailani wrinkled her nose at the thought, she much preferred being how she was and didn't want to become completely blue or anything like that!

Gin Ae felt terrible as he closed the jar. He hadn't known! He leaned forward to help his sister scoop the pollen from the water's surface. Even if it was likely that some had gotten into the water simply from being in the air yesterday, he certainly didn't want to cause any further possible trouble for the innocent fish. Then he squinted at his sister to look her over very closely. "You didn't change," he finally decided with a nod. That was a relief. Though he had already confirmed it for himself, he looked at Kailani expectantly. "I'm all the same, right?"

Kailani felt relieved when she heard her brother acknowledge that she hadn't changed. She even checked over her hands, the girl rubbing any remaining pollen between her fingers just to make sure it wasn't somehow causing something to glow or whatever happened to make the Matori change like they did. "Good." She murmured with a shy smile towards her brother. She was happy as she was and most definitely didn't want to drastically change all of a sudden!
"Let me check." Kailani pursed her lips thoughtfully as she walked around her brother, looking over everything and then a soft sigh of relief left her lips. "You seem the same. Do you think..." Her voice trailed off into a sheepish whisper as she tried to get the courage to express her thoughts. "Do you think it's because...we're...hybrids?" Maybe somehow their mother's mixed heritage had stopped the pollen from changing them? They did look less like the local Matori because of that. Her hair was maybe the only thing she had from her Matori blood, at least that was what it looked like since it was the same color as her Matori grandfather.

Gina Ae sat as still as possible as his sister inspected him, waiting for the answer with bated breath. What if something had changed? With Kailani be upset? Would she not like him anymore?! Would the rest of the family chase him off??! Thankfully, the confirmation that he hadn't changed allowed all of that stress to release, and he fell back into the sand with his arms splayed straight out from his body. What a relief! His brow knit at the observation though. If some Matori had changed, why not them as well? "Maybe?" Having the mixed heritage might just be what had saved them. He looked down at the jar he'd closed up. Did that mean he could play with it more and be alright? "Maybe just that person changed? Did they say if anyone else changed?"

Kailani watched her brother flop into the sand, the girl opting to also sit down though she did so slowly and by crossing her legs in a more elegant manner. "It sounded like quite a few in the village had some sort of change." She replied quietly after reflecting upon what she had seen in passing. There had been so much yelling that it was hard not to know that something was going on even if the ocean breeze did muffle some of the commotion. "It ranged from anything like hair, skin and eyes. Someone had bright green hair when it was almost black before." She shook her head, her gaze widening as a spark of fear gripped at her heart. "What if they get angry at us? For not changing?" She was already shy enough around the villagers and hid behind their mothers and grandparents whenever she went shopping with them. How could she even dare venture that way now if they were that angry over changes while her family looked the same?

Gin Ae's brow rose slightly. All of that was changing on people? He couldn't imagine if any colors on himself had changed! His gaze slid toward the jar of pollen with a frown. He'd been playing with it since it had started falling yesterday. How had he been spared? Why? His sister's worry instantly infected him as well, and he sat up with his face scrunched with concern. "They.. wouldn't.. right?" Much like his sister, Gin Ae stuck close to his family any time they ventured into the town. He could barely speak a word to the unrelated faces that surrounded them on those trips, and forget making eye contact! If the townsfolk that changed suddenly got mad at them... He looked over his shoulders just to see if anyone might be approaching them as he scooted closer to Kailani. "Mother and Makuahine are tough. They won't let anyone hurt us."

Kailani's arms wrapped around her stomach as she thought about the situation. "I don't know." She replied after a moment, her voice as quiet as a whisper and slightly trembling. Kailani squeezed her stomach, looking over at Gin Ae as he scooted closer. They were tough, weren't they? The thought brought a small smile to her lips despite her fears and the girl slowly nodded. "That's true...I really hope they aren't angry though." It was scary enough to go into town with all the visitors who passed through! Even familiar faces could be overwhelming to Kailani who hid behind all of her family members when they did visit town. She much preferred staying here around the cove where their family lived, it was so peaceful.
"Maybe we can just avoid town for a few days." She mused after a moment, trying to find her courage since she knew her mothers wouldn't want something like this to frighten them. "Things surely will calm down then." Kailani forced the words from her lips even though she didn't know how much she actually believed in them.

The suggestion to remain home for a while made Gin Ae perk up instantly. "Yeah! We'll just stay home!" He had absolutely no issue with that plan. If he could have his way, he and his twin would never have to go to town ever! They could just stay here exploring the beach and the shore together... Someone would end up dragging them to town eventually, but surely they could stretch out that time for as long as possible. He sat up and scooched along until he was next to Kailani and wrapped his arms around her encouragingly. ..and also for a little encouragement for himself. He wanted to forget about people even possibly being angry at him. "Wanna go find sea grass for necklaces?"

Kailani leaned against Gin Ae for support, the youngling enjoying the moment of peace with her brother. She was just thankful that she could always rely upon him helping her out whenever she felt scared like this. The suggestion of making necklaces brought a small smile to her lips and she found herself slowly nodding. "Sure. " It would be better to keep busy than spend all afternoon worrying about something, that was what her mothers had told her before as well. She maneuvered her arms around her brother so that she could give him a light squeeze, the youngling slowly wiggling out so that she could stand and offer Gin Ae a hand to help him up. "Maybe we can find some pretty shells to weave in between." She offered quietly, a smile lingering on her lips as she tried to focus on crafting something cute rather than worrying about others being angry.

Pleased to hear his suggestion accepted, Gin Ae looked out at the ocean with a soft sigh. In there, they wouldn't have to worry about the earthlings hurting them. The embrace of the ocean was safe and loving.. like being in their mothers' arms. Relaxing himself, he accepted the help up and gave their joined hands an extra squeeze. "I bet so," he assured. "Hopefully some of those swirly ones!"
