(1/10)
Maritza and Isaia's airship had gone down in the waters between Belrea and Sauti. It was Zadia, actually, who got the news first - by word of mouth of all things, and so Uquin was guilty to admit that he hadn't thought to check in with Lioe in the first, chaotic few days. Uquin... initially tried to disregard it. If there wasn't an official announcement, then it could just be someone spreading nasty rumors, trying to cause a panic. ... The next few days proved that was far from the case.
So that was how Uquin found himself at Lioe's home... a place he realized, now, he had been to sparingly ever since his son returned to Belrea to work. He hesitated, recognizing he didn't even know if the boy was home or not, what his schedule was... but finally knocked, bracing himself.
He... didn't want to think he was an absent father, but he recognized that often his children came to see him, rather than the other way around. Especially since Maritza had returned to work full time, often leaving him and Marcella on their own for long periods while she worked.
Funny how he always seemed to realize what he was lacking, as a parent, only once some sort of tragedy had struck.

Life had been keeping Lioe busy as of late. With the shop planning to expand, he was the chosen employee to retake stock of everything they had in shop; including the dusty old storeroom the owner hadn't touched in a decade. It was steady, slow, and simple enough to be almost tedious. Perfect for a slacker like Lioe. Even he was ready for a break by the end of the week though. What better way to relax by having a nice breakfast and then laying down on the couch for a nap? When he heard the knocking at his door, he almost didn't get up to look. Zadia hadn't said anything about a visit and Isaia was out on one of his trips, so that only left someone from work. With a grunt of annoyance, he stood up and straightened out his- uh- pajamas... "I'll be right there!" With a quick change into something comfortable but day appropriate, he covered a yawn and pulled the door open. It took a moment to register who was standing there and he gave a pleased sigh of relief. "Oh, it's you!" He started to smile, but something about Uquin's posture made it falter. "Do you wanna come in?"

(2/10) It was... perhaps unfair, to have expected his daughter to break the news to her brother. He'd assumed - but no. That was a cruel burden to leave on her. Still, when Lioe opened the door, with sleep mussed hair and slightly wrinkled clothes, Uquin felt a jolt of guilt for rousing him, and for bringing such news with him. "Just me." He said with a small twitch of his lips into a smile. It was tired, and didn't quite meet his eye, but he tried for Lioe's sake. "Yes, thank you." he said, with awkward politeness considering this was his son.
But it had been a long time since he'd been in his home, and that realization only made this harder. He felt he'd tried to be more present for his children, after what happened with Ujana, but - it was at moments like these he realized he hadn't done as well as he'd hoped.
He followed his son inside, expression crinkling a bit in fond frustration at the comfortable mess inside. "Are you home for the day? I feared you would be at work and I would miss you."

With the front door shut again, Lioe gave his sitting room a quick scan. The couch was small but clear enough for sitting since he had just been napping. The only other chair was layered with a blanket and clothes that needed washing. At least it wasn't as though he did enough heavy labor to make his clothes smell too much... He gestured toward the couch for his father to sit. He wasn't used to entertaining others... frankly, Zadia was the only other person to have actually come into his home for a visit once they had gotten separate living arrangements. He could have shared with his sister forever if he'd been able to, but even he had felt the urge to have his own place now that he was getting older. Of course, something told him this wasn't just any visit. "Yeah, I've got today off." He pressed his lips slightly and debated being direct to figure out the reason for his father's presence. ...Direct wasn't quite his style. "Do you want something to drink? Hungry, maybe?"

(3/10) When Uquin was younger, he might have fussed at his son for the clutter around his home. But after the joys of raising triplets when separated from Maritza, he would never criticize the cleanliness of a home ever again. Instead, he looked around, expression softening as he realized this was the first time he'd come to visit his son's new home. He knew where it was, obviously... had congratulated him when he heard he had moved out, but ... why hadn't he come to visit sooner?
He shook himself, and instead waved off his son's offers, smiling at him tiredly. "No. Let's just take a seat, hm?" He regarded the couch then moved to sit down on it, pulling his prayer beads out, thumb rubbing the smooth stones in a self soothing gesture that betrayed his nerves. "I... didn't realize you hadn't heard, or I would have... Lioe." He drew in a breath then turned to his son. He wasn't a man unused to sharing bad news to people, but to his own family? That... sort of agony had been spared him, so far. "Sit down, son. Something has happened."

Ah, so this was something serious. Lioe hesitated before he walked over to the chair layered with clothing. He unceremoniously shoved the layers to the floor and perched on the edge of the now open seat. He wasn't sure why he didn't just sit next to his father.. His own nerves were already on edge now that he was seeing the older healer looking so worn and weary. Of course, his first thought went to his siblings. Someone had been hurt... He straightened his back a little to brace himself for whatever news was to come. "How bad is it?"

(4/10) "It's not good." Uquin said, honestly but not very helpfully. He wanted to stall, but - it wasn't fair to keep the poor boy anticipating the worst. It wasn't kind. "The airship crashed, on its way to Sauti. Isaia's been found - your sister and I are going to Matori to bring him home."

Lioe's stomach sank while his imagination went wild. Isaia's airship had gone down, or Zadia's work had caught up with her, or Marcella had been injured in some explorative fancy. When the news finally came out.. he hadn't expected to actually be right. He had hoped he wouldn't be right. It took a few seconds to sink in, but all at once Lioe's face paled while his eyes went wide. Isaia.. A crash was bad, but even that wouldn't have Uquin looking like this. There was definitely more to this. "How bad was he hurt? Is he going to be okay?"

(5/10) Uquin hated to see that look on his child's face, but... this was a situation that he wasn't sure how to fix. He moved to sit at the edge of his seat, ready to get up or move closer if Lioe looked faint, or ... like he needed him closer. Considering he was still speaking, and wasn't struck silent in shock, he was taking it just a bit better than Uquin had.
... Although... he also was missing just a bit of context. "He's alive, and being cared for by the rescuers in Matori. They... didn't say what his condition was." It was part of why he and Zadia were leaving so suddenly.
As for the final piece of the news ...
"... Lioe, your mother was - also on the ship. The letter about Isaia didn't say if she had been found yet or not."

At least Isaia was alive, but- "What do you mean 'they didn't say?' What made them think that part wasn't important to let us know?" His voice had risen slightly with a sharpness that was unusual for him. His mind had instantly gone to the worst scenarios, most of which ended with Isaia not making it home... An imagination was as much a curse as it was a blessing. Any other complaints about the lack of information would be cut short when he realized Uquin had more to say... and what a bomb that was. He stared blankly for a long moment, piecing together what he'd just been told. "Mom's... missing?" Not only was Isaia likely seriously injured, but their mother was also missing from the same crash. He put a hand over his mouth and braced his elbows onto his knees to fend off a dizzying wave of vertigo.

(6/10) It... was incredibly unusual for Lioe, and had the situation been less grave Uquin might have smiled and expressed how refreshing it was, to see Lioe did have a shred of his parents' temper somewhere in there. Instead, Uquin braced himself to deliver the most crushing news.
It went over about as well as it possibly could have. The bit of energy that had puffed him up quickly leaked out of his posture, and he slumped down in his seat, stricken. Uquin slowly pushed himself from his own seat and stepped a bit closer, tentatively laying his hand between his son's shoulder blades, rubbing in slow circles.
He remembered doing this when the boy was just a baby, crying because he didn't understand why he had to stay at dad's without mom there. "The letter was sent shortly after the crash, it's possible she's been found and we just don't have news yet." He was quick to reassure, even if he didn't quite believe it.

As with Isaia, Lioe's mind spun through the possibilities of what could have happened to his mother. As much as he tried to halt the progress, morbid scenario after morbid scenario flitted behind his eyelids, each one worse than the last. The touch to his back was just enough to pull most of his attention out of the vicious whirlpool in his head. He gulped in a deep breath and raked his fingers through his hair a few times. "It's possible," he said thickly, sounding as believable as Uquin had. He cleared his throat and picked his head up, though his arms remained on his knees. "You said.. you and Zadia are going? When?"

(7/10) "Tomorrow morning. Early." Uquin answered, after a pause. He kept his hand where it was, but he wasn't sure how much solace he could offer to his grown son. They both were too smart to be easily lulled by 'maybes' and what ifs. The fact Isaia had survived was already, for Uquin, a miracle, so then how could Maritza--
It was a thought that he shut down viciously.
"The plan is to go to where Isaia is recovering, and search for your mother from there. It... may be some time before we are back in Belrea."

A battle fought in Lioe's mind. Uquin and Zadia were going tomorrow... he should want to go, too.. shouldn't he? Part of him did. He wanted to go of some sort of assistance. Yet, another part.. it would be a long trip. Would he even be able to help over there? Still... 'Your sister and I are going... some time before we are back...' A decision had been made. Had they thought about asking him at all? "I guess I'll stay here then. Watch the houses and stuff," he murmured, unable to keep the sourness out of his words. Of course, he immediately flinched from his own tone. If he was feeling stressed, he could only imagine how Uquin was doing! The fact that the man was even standing-! "Sorry, dad," he murmured softly. "I'll handle things here, really."

(8/10) Ah. He had realized. Uquin at least looked somewhat guilty when the reality of Uquin's words hit the boy. "If coming is something you must do, I won't stop you or make things more difficult." He amended, squeezing Lioe's shoulder before pulling his hand back completely. "... But I don't know what will greet us in Matori, and... I've told Marcella to stay here."
It was true, she could stay with Rivyn and Wyss, but she was such a quiet and intense girl around her uncles. She had never been away from both her parents, and all of her siblings - Maritza returning to work when she was ten had been difficult enough for her, Uquin wasn't sure how well she'd handle it. "I would... feel much better about things if I knew you were here too. To take care of your little sister."
