The colt stretched for an extended moment, watching his sister Glasya going off for some lesson with their dad. He and their brother Kasdeya had been excluded from this one but Murmur suspected it was because it had something to do with plants. While their family all stressed the needs of learning the healing powers of plants and such, Murmur wasn't particularly interested in his lessons. There was unicorn blood in their family and he was blessed with a horn. Why would he need to know anything about plants? He shook the remaining sleep from his eyes and went in the opposite direction of his sister. Surely there was something more interesting to do in this grove. It didn't take him long to run into another relative, as closely as they all lived together in their makeshift herd. It did take him a moment however to place where the two of them were in relation to each other on the family tree. His parents had been trying to teach him all of the proper places of everyone but for the most part foals called the elders "Auntie and Uncle" so he called out to the adult he found. "Auntie! Good morning! Can you tell me a story?" Auntie Brunhild always had good stories.

The mare had been up for a while already preparing her props and weapons for defense training later. She'd just finished up sorting everything when she heard a familiar voice behind her and she turned around with a smile. While Murmur was technically her great uncle, she took a teaching role in his life since she was so much older. She didn't mind in the slightest. Her great uncles and aunt were delights in the grove for everyone, breathing life into their little herd. Murmur was especially entertaining for Brunhild, as he was a bit rebellious and wasn't interested in most of his lessons - but he loved the physical training that was only a newly added addition to the family thanks to her father Galahad. Brunhild herself idolized her father and wished to grow up to be a knight like him. She saw that same fire in Murmur.
"A story?" she said warmly. She had many tales to tell, some he'd heard before. She thought a moment and decided on one. "Ok, get settled in and I'll begin." She got herself comfortable.

His face lit up and he excitedly skipped around, questions pouring out of him before he even thought of them. "Will there be a knight? A dragon? Will there be a battle?" He kept rattling off questions as Brunhild got comfortable, not caring that they weren't being answered. He knew she'd tell him at her own pace over the course of the story, but he was excited to know and patience was not a virtue he yet possessed. He managed to settle himself down to only a slight vibration of excitement and grinned up at his elder expectantly. "Is there a title?"

Brunhild watched the colt bouncing about with his tirade of questions filling the quiet morning with the loud chaos of children. Not for the first time she marveled at the energy of foals first thing in the morning. She didn't bother answering his many questions, not that he left her time to before the next one was upon her. She simply smiled and bid him to calm down so she could tell the tale. "You want a title?" she laughed. He always wanted a title. "True stories don't have titles." she said, eying him with mock seriousness before sighing and seeming to relent. "Ok how about The Tale of the Princess Knight." She watched his face for acceptance before going on. "And I'll start it how all stories start, with the beginning.
She was born, a child of two worlds. Her mother was a princess and her father was a knight. Everyone around her wanted her to choose a path, but the Princess Knight wanted everything and would not live denying half of herself.
So she trained hard in all aspects, learning to wield diplomacy and weapons in equal measures. She was of many talents and skills and was much admired by many. It seemed like she had achieved everything she had wanted. For a moment she felt peace.
However a new demand was put upon her, one she was not ready for. She was bade to find a mate" She paused to let Murmur react.

The colt loved stories about warriors so his attention was captured easily and completely. He stared with wide eyes as she detailed the tale of the Princess Knight. He smiled and gasped and laughed at points as his Auntie told the tale. He loved hearing about the knightly parts. Then came the challenge. "A mate?!" he said with a look of disgust. "Why would she need one of those?!" He couldn't figure out why someone would want that. "That's gross," he added with a sneer.

She couldn't help but laugh at the cost's disinterest in mate-finding. That would change soon enough when he grew up, but until then his aversion to romance was cute.
"As it happens," she said conspiratorially, "The Princess Knight didn't think one was necessary either.
In fact she refused altogether, much to the disappointment of her parents who probably meant well but couldn't see what she truly wanted. Her parents kept trying, bringing by eligible stallions left and right and all of them courted her as a proper princess. And all of them she turned away."
She made a serious face and dragged out the drama.
"All hope seemed lost. But then one day her father got an idea and he put together a tournament. Clearly the Princess Knight didn't want to court traditionally, so perhaps she would accept the winner of a series of games. The princess knight agreed and watched the tournament with interest.
Many stallions showed up and one by one they were bested as the contest went on. Eventually there stood only three before the Princess knight, the first, second, and third place winners. She eyed them all thoughtfully and the whole crowd held their breath. She had to choose."
She paused again, letting the suspense linger.

Murmur was getting restless and he wanted to know which knight was chosen. He thought it'd be the first place one for sure, but his Auntie always dragged these stories out. He sighed and fidgeted. "Well who did she choose?!" He was bouncing in place again, impatient for the end of the story.

She grinned wider at his impatience. She let it linger just a moment longer before continuing.
"She chose... the draw her sword!" she said dramatically and laughed at the shock on the younger soquili's face.
"She decided that she would only take a mate if he could best her in combat! The stallions, the crowd, even her parents were stunned! Finally one male stepped forward and challenged the Princess Knight." She chuckled to herself, thinking about that day. She hadn't known she was going to do it until the moment had arrived. She'd been impressed simply that one had been willing to take her on. She'd been more surprised when he won. She gave a wistful sigh.
"He won her heart that day Murmur! He bested her in combat and stole her away to a happy ever after." Her grin was wide and her eyes twinkled with memory.

He gasped at the twist in the story and laughed and screamed at the ending. "That was a great story Auntie thank you!" He bounced around her excitedly and then nuzzled her affectionately. "Now I'm gonna go find some breakfast!" And with that he bounded off further into the grove. His mother likely had food ready now.

She shook her head as she watched her little uncle run off. He had no idea the story was true and that tickled her. He'd learn someday. In the meantime she had lessons to give soon. She grabbed her supplies and headed out to the training grounds, her heart full.
