[ Keiba 1 ]
Keiba was wandering into town, something he didn't often do but as he was getting older he became more comfortable. Lately he had been emulating the men he encountered, the little boys he played with and the fishermen that wandered about. Although he identified more fluidly, there was nothing too wrong with shifting one way or another as his parents reassured.
He was almost 12, after all, so why not explore the options he had before he became an adult.

She was walking into town to pick up the week of spices for her baking. So far she was having a blast practicing all of the new techniques she was learning and utilizing the garden her fathers kept up. Puleleiite continued to grow confident in her draw toward becoming a chef, both for her family and beyond.
As she got closer into town, she caught sight of a strange youngling that looked quite different than most. Upon recognizing his bobbel, she let out a gasp of excitement before moving closer.
"Hello there, little Waterkin!" She said with a grin, "I didn't know there were much of us this side of the sea."

He was surprised to realize that this stranger was speaking to him, and once he turned Keiba also took note of her dark skin, glowing bobber, and bright smile. She seemed...nice. And he wasn't afraid. He was 12 years old.
...and close enough to town that someone would hear if he was in trouble.
"Hello." He replied bashfully, before nodding and smiling in return, "Yes, I am rare."

She giggled at the emotions that freely crossed his face as he took her in, recognizing them from her siblings and feeling a sense of dejavu. He wasn't much younger than her, but he seemed so tiny and lanky at the same time.
"Let me guess....Moakai and Hapuna?" She asked with a tilt of her head, before gesturing to her murky markings, "I'm Moakai and Menehune."

He took a look closer at her, but wasn't certain what a Menehune looked like. Maybe it was more green? He didn't dare to ask, quietly taking a moment to take it in before letting it go. He'd ask his mother and father when he got back...and brag to Tala that he met a stranger.
"Do you live in this village?"

"Close by, but not in the town. My family has a little cove on the beach where they've set up. We have a garden and everything. It's quite nice." She said before adding, "I visit town for errands, like today I'm getting things for my recipies."

"Our family lives in the water too." He said with a surprised look, before snapping his lips together in thought. He didn't see any other homes nearby, and he wondered if they simply lived on opposite sides of the water.
"This is my first time visiting town by myself...what errands are you doing?"

He was cute in his excitement, then his efforts to clam up and look serious. He was a lot like Kala in that sense.
"Well if I get the right spices, I can mix a great pie or bread. I've been trying new ones lately to see if I can make anything of my own."

"You can use different spices to make bread taste different?" He asked with a look on his face, tilting his head and wondering if he had anything different. Truly, he didn't know. His mother and father made them or caught them food, and it tasted great all the time. Maybe he could get them spices to try.

"Oh yes, little waterkin. You can do so many different things. Once you learn the science of baking, then you can experiment with different spices, or stuffings. You can fold seaweed or fish into bread, cover it with a nice salt, and then you have something like a sandwich folded over. It's amazing!"
Giggling, she gestured over toward the town, "If you want to join me, I'm heading to the market to pick up some spices right now. I can show you."

He stalled a moment longer, before nodding and agreeing to follow. Together, they headed to the market where his bright eyes looked around in surprise. So many people, colors, sounds and smells. It was a lot for his shy and young mind to take in, and he found himself growing uncomfortable.

They finally arrived at the vendor, and she took note of Keiba's stiffness. Letting out a sigh, she moved to block most of the crowd and gestured to the stall. Thankfully, they had introduced themselves along the way.
"Keiba, this is the spice vendor. He has many different spices from all over. What foods does your family typically make?"

He practiced his breathing his mother taught him, and though he may not have recognized the path they walked, he was grateful they were at their destination. It gave him something to focus on, even if he questioned the cleanliness of the vendor's stall.
"Oh...mostly fish. We catch it off the coast. Sometimes we have bread from reeds."

She was glad to see he was more comfortable, and tilted her head in thought. Looking at the vendor, she selected a nice ruby spice from Oba. A stronger flavor, but still safe and palatable to a youngling. She also picked out a few more spices, saying the names to the child and exchanging her currency for the purchase.
Turning and leaning down, she offered the small bundle of red spice.
"Pepperin, a great spice to cover the soft flesh of the fish. It'll be a little hot, but the kick goes well with Matori fish."

He took the offered item, and realized he couldn't peek in. It was sealed tight, which made sense with the soft powder inside.
"I'll give this to my mother..." He said bashfully, smiling up at her with gratefulness at this gift. His first gift from a stranger...no friend.
"Thank you."
