He’d spotted the guy a few times over the past couple of weeks. Lanky, black hair with an undercut and the top tied in a small bun not unlike his own. He also had glasses and was wearing a cardigan.

‘It’s summer, ya ******** douchetard.’

The guy had a better complexion, though, like he actually got out into the sun semi-regularly and made it a point to be in shape. Not that he was making a direct comparison between them, but Harvey was ultimately a homebody even if he did rather enjoy the outdoors, so he was on the paler side of healthy…ish.

He was fine.

Alright, he wasn’t sickly or dead at the very least.

In any case, currently the guy seemed to be in the middle of a very amusing conversation with Mel, his roommate. And that didn’t sit well with him.

Harvey wore a right scowl where he stood, holding the boxes Mel had asked him to bring. Something about a deadline and needing this, that, or the other. Truth be told, he hadn’t been paying attention when she talked about their most recent thing at the theater over whatever meal they were sharing. In his defense he’d been going on about two to three hours of sleep a night for several nights, trying to meet a deadline of his own at the time. He felt bad about it when he realized, which was why once he had met his deadline he took it upon himself to be extra helpful around the house and in general made himself available in case she needed him.

So there he was. Third time that week, and that was fine. He was between projects and Mel needed his help. He wondered on the way today if she was maybe doing it on purpose. Maybe she noticed that he hadn’t been paying attention? Or maybe she noticed that he was doing a little more to help and was just messing with him.

He was tempted to think the latter, but today she did mention some kind of deadline so he hurried on over to see this. What was that about a deadline?

He curled a lip at the scene in the distance. He didn’t have to be there to know that the guy was probably flirting with her. Mel was an overall attractive person, inside and out, and if you worked with her regularly it would be easy to fall for her. Speaking for himself, there was a point back in college wh–

Pause. Rewind.

His brows knit together at the thought. This wasn’t jealousy. She was a good friend, his longtime roommate and probably his best and closest friend. Of course he was protective, it practically came with those titles! If this were a TV show the good friend would have already stepped in, but it’d been days now. And here this guy was, again. And here he was, again, still not doing anything about it.

How much longer he could tolerate watching something like this, he wasn’t sure.

Minutes? Seconds?

Yeah, that felt right.

Seconds.

Exactly one more second.

He pulled his phone out and texted her.
