Eliazer looked up from the case file to verify their location before continuing his walk. Now that his illusionary disguise had been dropped the Geian was relying solely on a hooded cloak to keep him from the Security Sector's eye. Spells could only last so long and he didn't want to chance it when they didn't need it. Now that his true appearance was exposed the days of hardly sleeping and intense sleuthing were starting to wear on him. The skin under his eyes was bruised, his shoulders sagged and his facial hair, which was normally at least trimmed, was starting to go wild. He stopped to give a half turn back toward Honi and signed, "It's not far. If this is still correct, then it should be the apartment building one street over." Looking toward someone without actually looking at them was a skill. A sense of unease had been built up between the two of them lately and Eliazer wasn't sure what to do with that. So, he'd done his best to keep his distance and work on finding something to fix it. If he could at least prove his innocence in her eyes then that was something, right?

Ever since leaving the security building, Honi had felt the wall building around her. As much as she wanted to believe in Eli, she was starting to doubt her own judgement. She didn't exactly have much experience with the world that she was now being spun through. Bounty hunters, thieves, mercenaries, killers... looking over her shoulder, keeping up the illusion charm, wondering how her family was back home... wondering if Eli was really the man she'd thought he was... Her appearance wasn't much better than Eli's at this point. While the neighborhood didn't look terrible, there was a distinctly guarded air to it as well. Something told her she didn't want to be there. ..but perhaps that was just knowing they were headed to find someone who seemed to be a big part of whatever this mess they were in was. The man was just as able to help them as he was to make things much, much worse. "Okay," she replied softly, her own gaze barely able to rise above Eli's shoulders.

Eli made sure to keep a hand close to his blunderbuss at all times. The rifle was carefully hidden beneath his cloak, but each time a noise alerted him to movement his hand would find its way back there, little bits of magic dancing across his fingertips. More often than not it was an averin, skittering around looking for bits of displaced food or the occasional lowlife skulking around. Just like us.
When the building came into view it checked out. An older edifice with several windows boarded up and the front door to the building hanging on by a thread. At least they wouldn't have to worry about breaking in...Instead of reaching for his usual weapon this time, Eliazer dipped down to pick a dagger out of his boot (just in case), and stepped through the doorway. "Third floor right?"

Once they stopped, Honi looked at the building and felt a chill go through her body. Of course this creepy building was where this Ambrose Kettel fellow was reported to live. "People actually live here?" she murmured to herself. If ghosts were real, there were probably a few living here. The sight of Eli grabbing the blade made her hands tingle from the magic potential within. Right. She needed to be extra alert now. "Yes. Third floor, fourth bucket, right side." Hold on, that wasn't... "Fourth door, I mean." There was still much to learn about signing, but Honi still felt like she was doing fairly well considering the circumstances! It gave her something to be pleased about during such times. She followed along inside and winced at the sight of the stairs. Miscellaneous stains, cobwebs galore, cracks, and filled with shadows. Using a light probably would not be the best idea though.

He couldn't help it; Eliazer's surprise at her mis-signed words turned into a little snerk of a laugh. As soon as it slipped out, though, he cleared his throat and turned away with the back of his neck a little warmer than earlier. They were in a weird place right now - figuratively and literally - so it wasn't best to poke at her achievements. Not if he didn't want to end up with his knife in his own back... Third floor, fourth door on the right side...It wasn't hard to miss, especially since it looked to be cracked open. Why was it open at this time of night? Frowning, Eli carefully picked his way across creaking floorboards before stopping just shy of the door and raising a hand for Honi to stop as well. Instead of using his hand, he put the knife back into it's sheath, reached for his rifle and used it instead to gently push the door the rest of the way open. Quiet. Just like it was outside...

Though self-conscious of the fumble, the snicker that reached her ears instantly warmed Honi's belly happily rather than raise any offense. There had been so little ability for anything lighthearted as of late... The fact that Eli was able to laugh at all had to mean something, right? Unfortunately, the moment was gone as quickly as it had come, and she resumed her subdued walk. Her fingers rubbed together gently to help her focus on having her magic ready should it be needed. She also needed to make sure she wasn't getting herself too ready. The last thing she wanted to do was shoot magic at a shadow that might startle her and bring the building down with them in it. Her gaze rose enough to peer at the door as it was opened. The anticipation trapped her breath in her throat as she listened for any sign of life within... After a moment, she took a few careful steps to get a different angle to view through the door. It was so dark in there... She slowly raised her hand. Within the room, a small, faint light began to glow and gently illuminate the decrepit space.

There was a stench about the place that Eliazer knew all too well. Some of it was rotted food, others mildew and mold, while more still had an iron taste to it. As they slowly crept into the apartment Eliazer could make out the signs of a struggle and pointed toward them in turn. A table had been knocked over, a blade had damaged several of the chairs in the sitting area and leading toward the kitchen was a trail of thick, splattered blood. Flicking a piece on his rifle, Eliazer infused the blunderbuss with his own magic and caused the weapon to gain a faint glow. He walked forward, doing his best to remain as quiet as possible as he made for the kitchen. Just because they couldn't hear anyone else didn't mean they weren't there, but still...The sight alone was harrowing. There, sprawled out on a dirty wooden floor, was a Geian man. His markings may have looked like Eliazer's...if his throat hadn't been slashed.

Honi followed Eli as he entered the apartment. The stench was like a wall that she hit as she crossed the threshold, and she nearly gagged at the impact. Growing up around beasts both tamed and wild, she knew what that smell meant. Or, she thought she'd known. She'd seen the aftermath of two predators fighting for dominance. She'd seen the remains of a pack's feast. This, however... As she took in the sights of the ruined furniture and the streaks of blood inside the room, her stomach sank lower and lower in her belly. This wasn't going to be like seeing some dead snapptrotter lying in the water. She couldn't stop her legs moving deeper into the fog of death... Her whole body froze when she saw the man on the floor, her eyes reluctantly taking in every detail. Dead.. A man was just lying there dead... A pitiful gagging sound came from her throat and seemed to wake her body again. Honi quickly slapped her hands over her mouth and spun to run for the hallway on jelly-like legs. The light she had made flickered and sputtered, leaving the sitting room dark again. Her shin snapped sharply against one of the fallen chairs. She couldn't focus on making another light.. she just stopped where she was and knelt down to fight to keep her stomach from betraying her further.

Eliazer focused on the body for far too long before turning back to Honi and immediately feeling his stomach drop. He hadn't thought....And that was the problem. He didn't think of how this must look to someone else. Eli had been so focused on finding proof to clear their names, to clear his, that the thought of what such a sight might do to Honi hadn't once crossed his mind. Somewhere in his mind he'd assumed that everyone had seen at least one dead body in their lifetime, but really, how many had? And with this level of depravity? Eli didn't have time to react before Honi fled the scene and left him in darkness. For a moment Eliazer stayed there, half crouched over the still warm corpse, just...looking into the darkness. After some time Eli summoned an orb of his own and carefully put the blunderbuss back over his shoulder. He picked his way across the apartment back into the hall where he saw a scene that broke his heart. Instead of trying to get her attention he simply crouched beside her and took a deep breath before putting a hand on her back.

Though her shin was now throbbing, Honi couldn't spare any effort to soothing it. The sour taste in her mouth was trying to smother her... She had made it just outside the entryway, but the air was still thick with the scent of decay. She forced herself to breathe... but even worse than the smell was the image. There had been a life in there, a person, and now it was just gone. Taken. It didn't matter who the body belonged to or what kind of person they might have been. It was a devastating sight for a naïve young mind. With the blood pounding in her ears and chest, she hadn't heard anyone approaching. The touch to her back earned a sharp scream and she launched herself away from the contact. Well, more like she simply fell away from the touch, dropping onto her hip with a grunt. Her face was pale and wet with tears that would shimmer in the light Eli cast, though her eyes wouldn't, couldn't, rise above Eli's knees. She needed someone's arms around her. She needed a comforting embrace. Yet, as much as she needed it...she swallowed the aching in her chest. She couldn't bring herself to move, but she had to start doing something. "I.. never saw.. Just animals before.. I didn't.. What if I..?" She sucked in another breath with a wince. "Was that.. him?"

He shouldn't have touched her. The moment his hand made contact he knew it was a mistake. Eliazer's hand hung helplessly in the air, paralyzed by grief over what he'd done. Honi would have fought him, but he should have found a way to leave her behind and come on his own. Like a fool he'd thought that having her close would be better.... You're so stupid. Why don't you ever think things through?!Eli wanted to touch her so bad, to bring her into his arms and hold her so she couldn't see anything other than him, but how could he? How could he touch her now when one hand had that kind of reaction? With her eyes downcast she wouldn't be able to see him sign, so he dug around his pockets for notebook she'd gifted him so long ago and wrote out a message with a bit of charcoal. "It's him." And then below that, he wrote, "I need to inspect the body. I'll be quick." With sigh, he slid the notebook across the floor toward her, trying his best not to make any sudden movements, before rising to go back into the room. Eli left one ball of light with her, but summoned another to go with him.

Honi realized her error after a moment of silence, but it wasn't enough for the strength to lift her head to seek out any signing hands. It wasn't until the heard the footsteps receding that she even looked up at the paper. She read the words, but then focused on the booklet itself. Slowly, she reached out to touch the paper. It seemed like ages ago that she had given this to him. Ages ago that she had made that sappy little pendant on the front out of the clay he had given her. Her eyes welled up with fresh tears at the realization of how much had truly changed. The fact was though, she couldn't get through this on her own... She needed help if she was to get home, and how was she going to find anyone else to trust? Gods, this was so confusing! She pulled the notebook closer and wrote 'downstairs' in return. She needed fresh air, and to not be so close to that.. that apartment. With a little light on her fingers, she carefully made her way back down the rickety steps to the main floor and took a few long breaths. She couldn't just curl up and give in now...

Eliazer picked his way back through the wreckage toward Kettel's body. He needed to be quick; not just to get back to Honi, but also to stay out of sight. If the fight had drawn any kind of attention it would be bad for them to be caught in the area and Eliazer had no desire to raise his bounty. In a separate notebook, one he kept in his inner pocket for work related notes, Eliazer started marking details. He used the tip of a dagger to lift the edges of Kettel's neck wound, used a bit of magic to trace his blood for potential poisons, took notes on how the area had been ravaged- Then a noise caught Eli's ear. Wha-? BOOM! The blast caught him off guard and if he weren't already on edge Eliazer might not have ducked in time. Shards of the cabinet behind him exploded into the air as a shadowed figure rushed out toward the hallway. With a soundless scream, Eliazer tossed his dagger at the retreating figure and only briefly delighted in the way they stumbled on impact. It lodged into the figure's calf, but they were quick to pull it out and keep running. With sounds of a chase happening at the top of the stairs, a figure was almost too casually making her way up from the lower level. Her hand was on the pistol sitting ever so prettily on her hip and long, luxurious ginger curls bounced off the figure's shoulders as she climbed. When she came across Honi, Adhira smiled. "Well well, so nice to see you again, sweetling. Sounds like your friend's up to some mischief upstairs."

It would have taken a good jolt to pull Honi from her attempts to calm down, and the shockwave that seemed to rattle the whole building certainly did the trick! She let out a shriek of fright and ducked against the wall. What the-? Her eyes looked back up the stairs, but her legs were stiff and heavy. She did not want to go back up there.. but.. Eli? She jumped again with the voice from below. She hadn't heard the other's approach over the noise above echoing in her ears! "Adhira.." The woman was a gorgeous figure highlighted by the faint moonlight filtering into the old building, almost like a spirit of a witch. This wasn't any friendly ghost though. Now Honi's legs shakily moved as she slowly backed away from Adhira's approach. "You're.. Eli's boss... Can't.. can't you help him?" She knew it was a futile plea. Adhira had made her intentions plenty clear after their first meeting. Honi was desperate though, trapped between the hunter and the noise quickly approaching from above. A tiny spark of lightning flickered in her palm, but she couldn't focus enough to make a proper orb.

Sounds of a scuffle, both physical and magical, echoed up the stairwell around Adhira. The bounty hunter's footfalls were almost painfully slow as she ascended with only the clip of her heels breaking through the struggle above. "Eliazer Aberswith is a wanted criminal and to that end-" Adhira reached for the pistol at her side and brought it up, pointing the barrel straight at Honi's head. , "-so are you. The only way I can help either of you is to make this quick."
As soon as she said the word 'quick' Eli's torso was knocked through the railing on the floor above. He hung on, arms locked with his assailant and snarling. While Eli was too busy trying to keep himself from falling completely, Adhira caught sight of the little pops of lighting coming from Honi. "Sweetheart, you're shaking. What were you going to do if you did find the one who framed him? Cry and beg them to show you mercy? I should have just shot you in the alley,."
