Merchant Prompt
It was already late in the evening but the merchant seemed unfazed by the passing of time. He sat, poised and elegant, watching the world around him. He didn’t seem bored, even as he leaned forward and laced his fingers atop the table; below it, he kept his toe tapping to some silent tune in his head. He was tall, by human standards, though while sitting down he didn’t seem particularly threatening. If you didn’t look at his face.

He had graceful features--sharp and refined. His chin and nose tapered to a point, giving him an air of sophistication, but that, combined with his slitted eyes and pointed teeth, there was something undeniably predatory about him. He watched with a hungry gaze and a mischievous, nearly sinister smile. His ears were pointed and were prominent despite being tucked behind his vibrant, multi-colored hair. The most intrusive feature that indicated there was something not human about him were the curling horns protruding from his temples and the oil-slick black scales that brushed his cheeks and forehead. He was well dressed, in a fashion obviously otherworldly, and seemed to enjoy dressing himself up in glistening gemstones.

His table was somehow both simple and overwhelming; it was draped in a dark purple tablecloth, with extravagant embroidery in different designs. Scattered neatly atop the table was an array of items that seemed to carry some magical weight to them.

He did not seem intimidated in the slightest and, upon noticing that the barrier surrounding him rippled when his visitor entered, he smiled.

He did not rise to meet them nor adjust his position in the slightest. He followed them with his fierce eyes and greeted, in a silky voice, “Welcome.”

Vaylin held the fruit she had fought hard to claim in her hand as she reached the barrier to the Merchant's shop. She wondered what the alien shop keep wanted with these pods anyway, maybe his species ate them like the insects had. Although the thought made her shudder imaging the horned man spewing acid like those terrible insects. Putting that aside she went into the tent.

The alien man greeted her without rising from his seat. His table was as it was last year filled with an impressive collection of knickknacks and artifacts from across the galaxy. The man was as ever dressed to impress in a fine suit with impressive gemstones. With his fierce gaze and smooth voice Vaylin couldn't deny there was an attractiveness to the male but she was here on business.

The young corporal stepped forward and showed the man the fruit she had "Hello Merchant, I believe you're looking for these right?" She said holding up the large just ripe fruit, she had made sure to take one that was not nibbled on or bruised. "If you have any more artifacts from Velenia I might be willing to trade." She said scanning his wares.

“You have a keen eye, my friend! Yes,” he said, as he leaned forward to inspect the fruit she presented. He did not reach for it just yet, but she had given him a fine view of the piece, and Vanguardians–unless otherwise tainted by human influence–were generally a trustworthy, honest sort of people.

At least, in his experience. It meant he could have probably tried to swindle them fairly easily, but they were shrewd and it wasn’t really worth the trouble.

“Oh, I like a customer who knows what they’re looking for. You know, I’ve had my eyes out for things from Velenia ever since I ran into you last year. It’s not easy, given the state of things. I thought about trying to head back, myself, but it’s been storming so badly. I’m sad to say that my wares are a bit limited on such things, but I think I’ve got something you might be interested. Here, go ahead and set that fruit down.”

He extracted an onyx plate from just under the table and set it in front of her so she could free her hand and put the fruit down without it touching anything else on the table. From a box to his right, he leaned over and fished around for a moment before he pulled out a small black box.

He brushed his fingers over the smooth wooden surface and unlatched it before presenting its contents for her inspection. “Fashionable, no?”

She might recognize the visor inside as being of similar make to some of the Velencian visors used during missions, but there were several key features of the design that unveiled its true origin. It was a bit more rudimentary in design, and had a small crack on the right side. The visor was made of a metal her ComTech could identify as native to Velenia–a unique compound not found anywhere else. It was resistant to rust and did not conduct heat, and the visor itself was capable of blocking all dangers from looking into non-magical light sources. She could have stared at the sun if she liked, and not felt any strain on her eyes.

Such objects were not uncommon from Velencya, but they were made out of lesser materials, or the scraps they could salvage.

“Now,” he explained, “This one has taken some damage. The crack in the visor will need repairs. It should still function, but I doubt you’ll find many like this at all. I don’t even know who to go to just to get this repaired. But I think you might have better luck than I would. Do you want to take a look?”

Vaylin cocked her head a little. "What do you mean it's been storming badly?" She also wanted to ask about how exactly he got to not just Velenia but all these worlds his wares came from but she figured the enigmatic merchant would probably want to keep his tools of the trade a secret. "What's happening there?" She hoped he just meant badly in the sense of it being an inconvenience, not badly in the catastrophic sense.

She didn't know much about her homeworld, she had never really thought to learn about its climate so she wasn't sure how common storms were there. She hoped this was not an indicator of some problem with the homeworld, the instability of Velencya was bad enough but if Velenia was failing too, the young Corporal couldn't bare to even consider it.

She place the fruit gently down on the onyx plate the Merchant had grabbed. "Can I ask why you want these things anyways?" She asked curious. although her curiosity quickly shifted as the merchant retrieved a box for her to examine. She gazed at the visor, she ran a quick scan of its with her ComTech and sure enough it was genuine, the design was familiar if a bit outdated but she had seen visors like this used during some missions but the materials were different, those were cheaper, the synthetic recreations but this was genuine Velenian craftsmanship.

The crack was unfortunate but she could think of ways to repair it later. "I'll take it." She said with a smile. She picked it up carefully seeing if it would fit her and much to her delight it seemed be more or less her size. "It's always a pleasure doing business with you merchant." She said admiring the visor and running her finger over the fine metal.

“Oh, you’re too kind to me. Thank you,” he said, visibly glad to make this trade. There probably weren’t many people he could offload the visor to, and in exchange for the pods? It was a good deal for both of them.

“I’m rather fond of the flavor,” he said, holding up one pod and shaking it. He smiled with enthusiasm akin to a child with a new toy.

“It’s nothing nefarious, if you were worried. It’s got a good, rich flavor, and I am in the unique position of being able to enjoy them. Really, the pleasure’s all mine. I’m always glad for a chat with you. Although-when it comes to Velenia, to be honest, I have no idea what’s happening there. There’s a bit of a cloud from what I recall, but it’s all the debris around it that makes it difficult to get to. I like to be safe, so if I have to pick and choose what worlds I’m visiting, I’ll always try to take the easier ones first. There was a bad electrical storm a while back–I’m sure you might have seen or heard of energy surges in the deep of space? Really, it’s nothing worth worrying about, it’ll clear up in time. I suspect a lot of Velenia’s accessibility issues right now stem from the state it was left in. I know it was before your time, but.”

He shrugged, and offered the information in a sympathetic tone. “The debris floating around Velenia is rather impressive. Rather intimidating, if you’re trying to get around it. I suspect there was a collision not so long ago, but you know how things are–sometimes just in the wrong place in the wrong time. But like all things in the universe, some days are better than others. I wish I’d gotten closer so I could give you a better update. I take it that means you’ve had little opportunity to get there yourself?”
