Quote: The Meteor Shower (3) : It wouldn’t be a star festival without a meteor shower! Right on time, a beautiful array of shooting stars graces the night sky. This time of year is unnaturally clear and it’s incredibly easy to see the stars. Most meteor fragments appear to be little white or yellow lights streaming across the sky, but if you watch closely enough you may find that some of them seem to be a whole rainbow of colors. The scientists have reported that it’s just different components burning up as they enter the atmosphere, but there’s something undeniably magical about it. “You know, I’ve lived here my whole life.” That was a given. Luke would have known that by looking at his finances, of all things. A history that went on for … nearly forty years? ********. The late thirties snuck up on him fast but that was alright; something he could shrug his shoulders about and move on from. At least he wasn’t as aged as his not-sibling, who he could hear teasing him in his head– “Anyway, still haven’t gotten used to the meteor shower here. I’ve seen some in other places and have even traveled internationally to see them, but.” The scientists always had their own excuses for it, but the fact that the meteors were rainbow never stopped being anything short of magical. Michelangelo glanced toward Luke with a laugh, adding, “I can see why Kampana does a performance tonight.”

“Good choice on ‘Fira’s part, honestly.” Speaking about his wife made Luke’s smile as soft as ever, the kind of softness that would have still been there even if it weren’t for the array of colours in the meteors above them. “She usually loops it into the pride celebrations Kampana puts on.” Something about colours in the sky matching the teachers and students, if he remembered right.
He was not much of an artist, but he understood the intentions.
Richard was off with Safira, too. The only reason Luke was alone was his own nerves. Since the bank incident, he needed to keep an eye on things happening around outside. Kampana was clearly not a Negaverse operation. They both knew better than that.
Nothing went on in that studio that Safira didn’t know about.
But what about the places nearby? Luke was an accountant, not an elite superspy. Even as an accountant, it wasn’t like he was their accountant. They weren’t banks, obviously, but neither were they his clients. He had no idea who or what was on their books.
A faint sigh escaped him as he shifted position. He wished there was something he could do aside from just… watching. At least he had company.
“You know, my wife and I used to make jokes about the colours of the meteor shower.”

“Bet it’s gorgeous. Both of them are great dancers, ya know?”
He had also … heard that Richard’s shows at his club were also quite good. Heard via overhearing Ignacio talk to Lee about it, anyway. Michelangelo would have to take their word for it–
There was no universe in which he'd be attending whichever club Richard was at any night of the week.
His eyes drifted from the meteors above to the man beside him.
Michelangelo briefly wondered what Luke was thinking about, knowing that the quiet followed by the sigh wasn’t quite … well, didn’t quite seem like a devoted husband sighing dreamily about his wife. Something else was going on. He thought about prying a bit and asking if he was alright, but the nostalgic reflection was as good of a topic as any. “Oh yeah?” He snickered. “Please, enlighten me.”

Luke brightened immediately. “Oh, it is. I always watch recordings if I can’t catch it in person for whatever reason.” Work, usually. “Richard’s been working aerials in, recently.” Another thing Luke would have to just… let other people handle. Watching people do acrobatics on ribbon to music was fun. The idea of being twenty feet in the air with only the ribbon keeping him up?
Significantly less fun.
At least one of the other kids would have a recording to show him. Garber had seemed distracted of late, but Tammer’s whole crew was there. Between three adults, someone would probably have the time to film it. Plus, Lee and Constantine were floating around somewhere.
Either way, he would get to watch it later, and he would get teary with pride like he always did, and they would make fun of him like they always did—
It was just different being out here, instead.
At least being able to talk about his wife and kids and their jokes was a good distraction. Nothing seemed off to him at the moment. He would probably sense more if he powered up, from what Ignacio and Richard had told him, but he didn’t want to attract trouble. He and Michelangelo were hardly warriors—
“Oh, yeah. We joke that our kids are out here being so gay that they turn the sky gay.” His laugh was warm. “When Constantine came out, I won that bet. Safira won the bet about Garber being bi.” His eyeroll was affectionate. “Had to wait til he divorced his ex-wife to find that one out.”
The corner of his mouth quirked upward.
“Now, Tammer was a puzzle. I thought Tammer was definitely straight, because she’s never had any interest in men. Safira thought she was definitely bi, because something just seemed off somehow.” Luke laughed, again. “We were both wrong. Turns out we had a lesbian daughter.”

Michelangelo nearly choked on his spit when Luke brought up bets, of all things.
"Garber has a thing for The Sensation, doesn't he?" Michelangelo snickered. "That really buff, tall guy he spotted at the He-Man Competition?" It was impossible to miss how Garber seemed to lose his entire sense of anyone else when that guy had run by. Michelangelo would ... definitely give Garber that he had good taste. Zotsholo was a bit of a feast for the eyes.
Michelangelo knew that one firsthand.
He supposed this must have been what it was like to have fun parents, making fun bets on the kids of all things. His not-sibling, actual-parent was fun too, but the people they had both been raised by had been his grandparents. Michelangelo doubted they had any bets about how gay either of them had ultimately turned out, winning and losing in kind. Zolt still wasn’t out to their parents, honestly.
Michelangelo just didn’t give a rat’s a**. He was a professional saxophonist and somehow managed to not be the family disappointment.
Unfortunate.
He was trying to be.
“Suppose Richard isn’t straight either, and I get the sense Livie isn’t either as much as Ig whines about her chaos boys.” Michelangelo snickered, before he paused, pondering over who was left– “Isn’t Alan straight?”

“Yeah, no, Richard was like… fourteen when he told us he was pansexual?” He gestured widely, chuckling. “And he’s obviously married a man since.” A pensive pause. “I should have invited you to that. It was a good time.” Of course, he’d just been Michelangelo’s accountant back then, not yet his friend.
Michelangelo’s next comment about Alan got a raucous laugh out of him.
“Bet’s on no.” He flashed a devious grin Michelangelo’s way. “I’m not letting Safira win this one. I don’t think Alan’s even a man.” He hummed thoughtfully. “They were borrowing some of Tammer’s eyeliner the other day. Heard Tammer giving them grief about it.”
Now, plenty of men wore eyeliner, but… “And they were asking her for fashion advice. Alan might be a guy who wears feminine clothing! But I don’t know. I don’t think that’s it.” Safira was taking the ‘wait and see’ route this time, which meant she wasn’t raising the bet, so Luke was pretty sure he was right.

"Hey, maybe they'll do one of those vow renewals," replied Michelangelo, with a snicker. He doubted it, but considering the s**t they were dealing with--he took a sweeping glance to make sure nothing seemed suspicious. Still good so far--they could use something fun. "Or maybe someone will get remarried." Looking at Garber's dreams...
Well. He was just glad he got invited to the barbecues now.
"No!" exclaimed Michelangelo, leaning in because he wanted to learn more immediately. These bets were juicy gossip. To hear that there was a new one brewing?
Tell him more.
“Look, I'm on your side with this one. Has Safira raised the gauntlet, or is she hedging her bet?”
He wanted to know what the bet was at this point--

“No,” Luke laughed, “but the bet is on when they tell us. Safira’s giving it another year. I say,” he winked, “after that? Two months.”
Luke shifted to fold a leg under himself on the chair he was sitting on, propping his elbows up on the table and leaning forward in Michelangelo’s direction. “She’s holding! I think that means I’ve got a really good chance, this time.” He drummed his fingers on the table. “Safira gives it another year at least before we know, but I really think it’s more like two months.”
Alan was also going through a divorce, so that was understandably putting a damper on some things, otherwise Luke was pretty sure they’d have known already. There was a chance, he guessed, that the divorce might delay Alan’s coming out for that year Safira was saying, but he wasn’t so sure about that either. It was an amicable split, and the only thing left was arranging where the baby went when.
Well, Olivia was seven, not a baby, but still—

"From having watched my parent?" Michelangelo reflected thoughtfully, glancing up as he considered what his own bet would be at that point. His sibling-parent didn't have the benefit of supportive parents, but they had come to him with questions fairly early on. What was it?
"You're a millennial! You understand this better than I do, right?"
"... Zee. I think you're looking for Gen Z."
"... Milo."
"But you're right I'm very in tune with the queer community. I got you."
"I think you do have a really good shot, considering the escalation I watched in a not terribly supportive environment. Y'all grant that in spades. And Alan's got a different lease on life now, amicable split or not. Better for them." Though maybe the divorce would delay that a bit while they worked out the in-between aspect of it all. Divorces, even amicable ones, still took a lot to figure out.
He chuckled.
"You somehow managed to raise an entire rainbow of children."
After a pause, he deviously asked, "Think that'll carry to Garber's kids?"

"Oh definitely. I don't know what it is about Mikki and Aaron, but I don't see a couple of straight kids between them." A pause. "I don't know, maybe one is straight and not transgender, but there's no way both of them are. Not with the track record this family has going." Fate seemed determined to keep Safira the only one in the family who was both straight and not trans. At first there had been Alan, obviously, but... somehow Luke didn't think there was much solace for her in the grandchildren.
Some of them were too young to know for sure yet, of course, but call it a hunch.
Anyway.
"Did you want to go grab a bite? There's a lot of food stands open downtown."

"Mikki seems a bit too ADHD to be cis and straight, at least." Michelangelo snickered, reflecting briefly on the fact that from what he had seen on TikTok, the relationship between queer and ADHD seemed to be more of a circle on the Venn diagram than anything else--
Aaron was a bit quieter and a bit less balls to the wall, so in his limited exposure to him, he couldn't quite extract what was happening there. But he would trust Luke's opinion! Luke was the grandfather to both of them, after all.
Oh, food!
Michelangelo did want to grab a bite to eat. And it wouldn't take them too far out of the range of where Safira and Richard were performing to go get themselves some food, especially if they stuck to the downtown food stands. There might even be some fun, rainbow-themed specials considering the meteor shower above them.
Chancing one more glance upward as a rainbow meteor streaked by, he responded, "Oh, absolutely." As his gaze turned back to Luke, he shot him a grin. "Lead the way."
