Continued from Worth it?.
The Reservoir (4) : The Destiny City Reservoir opened about two years ago and is an easy escape from the big city. It’s a five minute drive outside of the Eastern side of town and features clear water and sandy beaches--although, the sand here is notorious for squeaking when you step on it. It’s a hot spot for all fun summer activities, but it’s been in the news for mysterious reports of some strange, aquatic monster. Some accounts say they’ve spotted a twenty foot long, snake like creature capable of rearing a long neck high above the water. It’s hard to tell if the videos are doctored, but there are too many rumors to dismiss easily. Something strange might be lurking deep in the water. Or it’s just a hoax to get people out to the Reservoir!

But…Sometimes, people feel like something is grabbing their ankle, even if they are just wading in the shallow end. In the deeper parts of the water, it gets a little more intense: something has been said to grab onto ankles and pull. People have been warned about dangerous pranks, but so far no one has been caught. In the shallow end, anyone unfortunate enough to be targeted may feel themselves being knocked off their feet and tugged into the water; anyone in deep water may feel a firm grip on their ankle, tugging them lower and lower. Somehow, anyone it targets is freed--either by wriggling and fighting, or because someone intervenes and pulls the would-be victim up. No one has drowned in the lake. Yet. It's impossible to see who, or what, is doing this, but it usually gives up after one failed attempt. Usually.

While you may find yourself harassed by the supposed cryptid, or see something visibly odd in the distance, you cannot take any pictures of the creature. Who knows if you’re even being attacked by the cryptid–or just another youma?

He must have laid there for a good fifteen minutes, catching his breath and examining his life. It hadn’t flashed before his eyes the way they said it would. Rather than his life he mostly thought of his girlfriend, the love of his life. He wondered why exactly he hadn’t done anything about getting her a ring yet, or planned out exactly how he would ask. He wondered about his priorities in life and he realized that he would have rather thought about it as ‘their priorities in life together’ rather than just his own. So as he sat up he decided that his next stop would be his sister’s store.

Not the one who still ran their family’s café, but his other sister. The one who worked at one of those fancy boutiques that sold very nice jewelry. He was sure she knew a thing or two about engagement rings.

With that thought he moved to stand. His body seemed to protest, though, so with a quiet groan he slowly lay back down.

“Few more minutes couldn’t hurt,” he said, closing his eyes to focus in case there were any Order signatures nearby.

With it now evening time, crowds at the reservoir should have dissipated. At least Lavendulan hoped so since she had no intention of ridding up to the place on Talullah’s back.

Coming from the Dark Kingdom, she teleported herself and her personal youma to a spot near the snack shack where they remained partially concealed by the side of a building while she took a moment to scan the area for any sign of a threat; namely order but anyone who might see her as a monster was someone to be wary of. Fortunately, the only aura she felt belonged to that of a lieutenant and after nudging Tallulah forward a few steps, Laven noticed that the agent wasn’t moving from where he lay upon the squeaky sand.

“s**t-” she muttered under her breath. “C’mon” Laven nudged her youma with the heel of her boot, urging him forward with haste causing the sand beneath his hooves to squeak in what might have been a hilarious fashion if it wasn’t that her priorities were set to making sure the Lieutenant was alive and didn’t need medical attention.

“Lieutenant!” the General lept off the kirin-like monsters’ back sending a small spray of sand to sprinkle over the man’s pant leg.”Lieutenant, are you hurt?”

He might have been more exhausted by the incident than he realized, because he had completely missed the signature of whoever this was. Based on their signature alone they obviously outranked him.

Still, the initial call of his rank gave him the strength to push up off the ground to stand at attention as though he hadn't just gone through a near-death experience. It was one among an unfortunately growing number given he was in the Negaverse, but all the same it was jarring and unpleasant and in that moment he wanted nothing more than to crawl into bed. But. Procedure had to be observed in case he found himself in the presence of a stickler for that kind of thing.

"Shaken but alright," he answered, eyes forward and focused on a singular point in the distance. "I heard there was something in the lake, I wanted to look into it. I thought it might be a youma or something."

Lavendulan managed to tamper down the chuckle that she could feel building up inside her, but there was no helping the smirk that broke her previously worried expression. The way he got up so quickly was amusing in its own right but the way his posture remained rigid as he stared out over the reservoir told her that he hadn’t quite noticed that the General beside him was no ordinary agent.

“You can relax,” perhaps at ease would have been more appropriate but she didn’t care much for those kinds of formalities. She wasn’t here to oversee his energy quota or make sure he wasn’t slacking.

“I’m actually here for the same reason,” she commented calmly. Tallulah shifted beside her, unconcerned that there was presumably a monster even bigger than it was lurking in the depths. “I came out here a year ago to hunt the thing but to no success. It got away from me, and dove deeper into the caves than I could follow at the time. I assumed it had left for good but then last week I witnessed it grab hold of a small child.” Took a big risk diving down to save them but couldn’t pursue the thing without giving rise to suspicion. The last thing she needed was a search and rescue dive team scouring the reserve only to learn that the supposedly drowned civilian was alive and well because she had the ability to breathe underwater.

Troublesome either way…

The General turned her attention to the noticeably taller Lieutenant. “By the looks of it, I’m guessing the creature grabbed hold of you.” dampened hair clung to his face as his water-logged uniform hugged the rest of him like a second skin. “May I ask- what’s your name?”

'Relax' wasn't a term he normally heard from higher ranked agents while they checked in on their lower ranked charges, so he brought his focus back from the distance and turned his head to see who this was. What he saw added to nerves, admittedly, but he did relax. Just a little bit.

In theory he knew what half-youma were, but this was his first time coming face-to-face with one. Of course, the first one he meets would outrank him, but thankfully it didn't seem like she was interested in that whole system. Out of respect--he didn't want to stare--he turned his attention back to the single point in the far off distance, and listened intently as she spoke.

"I must not have been paying too much attention to this last year, but I don't remember Local Nessy being a thing then." He didn't have much in terms of why he hadn't been paying attention last year, and he hoped she wouldn't ask.

Thankfully she didn't.

"Staurolite," came a swift reply, and for the first time that night he met her gaze. "May I ask yours?"

“Lavendulan,” she offered her full name rather than the one she often went by when in the company of Lopezite or Wolframite. Although, she wouldn’t scold him if he were to call her Laven instead since the name she’d been given lacked the usual ‘ite’ ending of most officers’ names.

“I honestly meant it when I said you could relax. I’m not out here to supersede your General’s orders or make your night more difficult than it already is.” Assuming Staurolite was feeling overwhelmed by their sudden, probably slightly overwhelming, aura’s, she turned to Tallulah and placed a palm on his shoulder to nudge him back a few paces away from the lieutenant. Lavendulan then took a moment for herself to don her usual glamour; the same one she wore a few days ago with the long-sleeved bathing suit usually used for snorkeling.

Perhaps seeing her without horns and scales would alleviate any anxiety he was feeling by having, for lack of a better description, two monsters standing so close.

“If you’re hurt I can teleport you to a nearby hospital, otherwise I planned on diving down there for a few minutes to see if I could chase it off again.” Or kill it if the creature should reveal itself to her again.

Lavendalun. General, if he had to guess. Given how unique it was in that it lacked the “-ite” ending, not to mention she was a half-youma general, Staurolite had a feeling he wouldn’t be forgetting her name anytime soon.

Despite her pressing the lieutenant didn’t change his stance. If he did actually relax he had a feeling his legs would turn to jelly so he didn’t dare. He just gave a little smile. “This is relaxed, believe me.”

He watched as she did some things out of consideration for him, though, and the smile became one of gratitude. It did help, some, but all the same he didn’t budge. Observing the formalities was actually also helping to ease his nerves.

“Thank you, but I’ll be alright. I can even help, if you need an extra set of hands or eyes?”

A subtle chuckle escaped her.

It wasn’t long ago when she too felt apprehensive around superior officers. Standing rigid wishing that she had the ability to meld into shadows instead of bodies of water. Still, a neat trick but not very convenient when stuck standing inside a Sovereign’s office or before their Queen. It’d be a lie if she said her own wariness around other officers didn’t heavily contribute to her extended stays in the Rift for research and exploration purposes.

Nonetheless, Laven sympathized with his reaction to her and even appreciated how he refrained from balking at her appearance. Respectful and professional in light of his prior situation, commendable and note worthy if they were to meet again at a later date.

“I won’t keep you if you have other places to be. But if you choose to stay, I’d appreciate it if you would keep eye out up here with Tallulah while I dive into the reservoir for a bit.” She reached up with a free hand to remove a silver earring. “I’d like to avoid being ambushed by an Order Senshi or Knight.” Although she could easily teleport away, there was the Lieutenant and her personal youma to consider. Having Tallulah dusted by some stray magic would be most inconvenient and the young man likely had nothing more than a toy weapon at his disposal.

Troublesome either way but such is the way things end up it seemed.

“This is, for lack of a better term, a walkie talkie.” She offered Staurolite the cuff with an extended hand. “You don’t need to use words just thoughts to communicate with me.”

He considered his options for a moment, wondering if it would be entirely wrong, as an agent, to opt out of the opportunity to help out someone of higher rank. It wasn’t even a trivial thing; the last thing anyone needed was those Order folks to swoop in and completely overreact and get in the way. They were never that far out of bounds, right?

Just enough to keep the world in proper order, on its way to being ruled by Metallia.

“I can stay,” he said with a decisive nod. Once she’d given her instructions he glanced over at Tallulah, his partner for this particular assignment. Considering the device now in his hands he minded his thoughts, just in case; he did honestly think this youma looked pretty cool. Like something out of a comic.

Staurolite kept a decent distance between them as they began their patrol, unsure how it felt about strangers sticking too close. Exhaustion kept him from moving too quickly, but he had a good sense of the perimeter. It was all clear, and he hoped it would stay that way.

When the two were far enough away, Lavendulan dropped her glamour and waded out into the water. Once she was about hip deep she dove under and swam out into the deeper part where she waited idly for a few minutes to see if the creature would take the bait.

It did not.

At least not after what felt like ten minutes of waiting; it was probably only three but her uniform wasn’t equipped with a watch and she wasn’t about to pull out her tablet to check. ’So, Staurolite. Her thoughts filtered through the ear cuffs. Why don’t you tell me a little bit about yourself?’ A little idle conversation would be nice since visibility in the night-shrouded murky waters was low.

“Fu–”

Oh, yeah. Walkie-talkie to communicate through his thoughts. Right.

Staurolite sideyed the youma beside him, wondering if it might have found his shock amusing, then shook his head to clear his thoughts and focus a bit. It was a little strange, but he’d been an agent for years. He'd gotten pretty good at adapting to strange.

’Not much to tell. What do you wanna know?’

Tallulah made a noise beside him that, it had come from a human, would have sounded an awful lot like a chuckle. The cheeky youma was obviously amused but kept his attention on their surroundings the same way he remained on alert in the Rift when Lavendulan entered his domain.

’I’ve attended a number of Negaverse meetings over the years and don’t recall seeing you before.’ Even his name was unfamiliar to her. 'How long ago were you invited to join, and if I may ask, who extended the invitation?’ Surely not everyone had a similar experience to the one she did; conscripted into joining a war she knew nothing about.

Lavendulan continued to feel her way through the reservoir, mostly through muscle memory on how many kicks it took to achieve a certain distance. Still nothing tugged at her ankle or attempted to pull her under.

Staurolite couldn’t help but make a face at the youma. That had to have been a chuckle…

He did his best to stay focused on the patrol, though, sweeping his gaze across the area and being mindful still of the perimeter. Nothing and no one. It was almost too quiet, actually.

’Technically going on eight years but, uh, I haven’t been the most active agent.’ He grimaced at the year count. He hadn’t actually thought about it in such specific terms before, so this was new and, admittedly, a bit embarrassing.

’I was busy in my day-to-day life. Left DC for school for a number of years, came back and have been adjusting to life after coming back and starting to work and live on my own. That kinda thing. So if I’m counting strictly active time, probably less than a year?’’

‘Must have been nice to have had time to finish school…’ Lavendulan lamented as a thread of envy accidentally filtered through their connection. ’My apologies. I’m sure you could understand how difficult it would be for someone like me to attend classes.

Eight years as an agent, she assumed that Staurolite had a base understanding of half-youma like her and their limitations with glamour. Even though she was able to finish most of her degree with online courses, the labs were much more difficult to coordinate. Then again, at the end of the day having an Oceanography meant little when the best kind of employment she could hope for was fieldwork but even that ran the risk of earning her a suspicious side-eye if not being found out due to a careless action.

’As a General I know I’m supposed to tell you how important it is to meet your quota, to step up when help is requested in service of our Queen, Metallia. But as someone who has lost almost all forms of civilian interaction, cherish the moments you have while not powered and do what you can to protect them. You’ll never know when they might be taken away.’ Before her eyes were opened to the war, Marissa lived each day in ignorant bliss. Believing the stories of vigilantes terrorizing Destiny City without a second thought.

Now she knew better, mostly anyway.

It was bizarre, sensing another person’s envy within his own mind.

The lieutenant chose not to comment, though. It was true that he was rather fortunate to have been able to take care of his civilian life despite being conscripted as an agent as a freshman in college. Others, like General Lavendalun, were not as lucky. For her, and others like her, it would have been even more difficult than an average agent to try and continue on as a regular civilian in the city.

Her words brought a small smile to his lips.

’You’re quite the breath of fresh air. I–’ An Order signature flickered on to his left.

’Got one. Too close for comfort, I’d say. Stand by.’

Staurolite looked toward Tallulah, wondering if the youma had to stick around and wait for his general or if he could just bail. He gestured for him to leave, if he wanted.

In the distance, he spotted someone in some kind of fancy-ish dress that didn't look at all like it was designed with battles in mind. He fought down a snort, again wondering who designed these outfits.

’Yeah, too close. Might wanna call it, general.’
