While Nanami was tutoring their son, Noelani had decided to take this mini-vacation of sorts to do something with their daughter. Sulburi was far too dangerous a place to take the younglings, there were simply too many variables against them there in the Oban capital but the nearby Matori village was accustomed to Noelani's family and always welcoming. Even though traders came and went often thanks to the local port, the village itself still felt fairly peaceful and quiet like some picturesque vacation spot. A few new shops had opened up over the years including a candy store for artisan sweets, a bakery and even another shop full of ceramics and trinkets to sell to visitors and locals looking to design their homes. Then the older clothing store, the smithy and the ever growing general store also made up the main square in the village. It was in this particular area that Noelani was thinking of simply wandering around with Raffrdeigh, allowing the youngling to decide wherever they first went.

Rafferdeigh was outright delighted to find out she would be getting a day out with her mother! Their time spent with the whole family was much loved, but she also appreciated having one on one time with either parent. She held Noelani's hand as proud as could be to have her all to herself and strutted down the main road through the market. It was sorely tempting to go into the candy shop first... "Can I get a persimmon tart first?" she asked with a youthfully graceless batting of her eyes. "I need energy to get through being in town."

"A persimmon tart?" Repeated Noelani as she squeezed her daughter's hand and directed them away from a man dragging a cart, the hybrid opting for the quieter side of the path away from the growing crowd of visitors and locals who were also out shopping and enjoying the warm weather. Some of the foreigners gave them strange glances, but Noelani simply smiled and waved before greeting any familiar face that she saw nearby. In a sense it confirmed that they were known within the village and she hoped it made it less likely that any stranger would dare to mess with her family, not with so many watchful eyes that knew them. "I suppose...only if they have lemon tarts as well. Wouldn't be fair if only one of us got a snack, right?" She teased with a small smile to her daughter.
The candy shop was right on the corner and Noelani passed a colorful wooden sign designed with various engraved treats and ribbons that swayed in the ocean breeze. Opening the door showed a wide front room with towers of various candies and paper wrappers and bags for customers to pick whatever they pleased. A counter had even more enclosed treats, including their tarts, and it was there that Noelani headed. "Raff, you may want to pick something for the rest of the family. What do you think?"

Oh, mother wanted a snack, too? Raff grinned brightly and nodded in enthusiastic agreement. "You need your energy, too, mother!" While she did notice the strange looks, she had learned long ago that those looks didn't matter. Her family loved her, and she loved her family, and that was that. When she saw someone looking a little too hard, she held Noelani's hand a little tighter. It wasn't going to mess up her day though! Not when she was about to get a persimmon tart!
"Aww, do I have to?" she asked playfully as she pressed her nose against the glass barrier preventing her from just grabbing up the yummy treats. It would need to be something that would still be good by the time they got home... "What about the cinnamon almond bar for Makuahine, aaaaaaaand curly licorice for Ziocite?"

"Mmhmm." Noelani nodded her agreement, the hybrid always eager to enjoy a sweet or two. Before she had gotten so caught up in work Noelani had actually used to bake and created new recipes from scratch, especially when she was often stuck at home with her grandparents with nowhere to go in between pearl diving sessions. It made baking a favored hobby, one that she missed a lot while exploring but it was not as if you could bring the kitchen with you into the desert or the middle of the ocean.
A soft laugh escaped her lips at her daughter's antics and Noelani found herself nodding. "Yes, yes. It's only fair since your brother would do the same if he were the one out shopping today, right?" She replied before nodding at the choices. "I think that'll work. We'll also sneak home a full pie to enjoy tonight with the whole family. I believe your Makuahine was working on some curry for dinner tonight after they finish up studying. Looks like they have caramel pecan, coconut or banana cream. Which do you think?" Noelani started to bring out her coinpurse while she waited on her daughter's responses, preparing the coin for the cashier who watched them from the other side of the counter. The young Matori was polite, but also fairly shy around the hybrid family. It made sense considering Noelani didn't recognize her, so surely she was new and not from the village originally. The owner was probably out for the day which would also explain their limited options compared to the usual array of various pies. Not that she minded, any of the three pies in the counter were still good since she had tried them all over the past couple of years and enjoyed each equally.

Raff sighed. "Yeah, I think he would." Even so.. she would want him to bring her something if Zoicite had been the one getting the treats. That was what a good sibling did, and they were good siblings! "She's making curry? Yummy! I hope it's reeeeally spicy!" She tossed Noelani a large, thankful smile and slid down along the displays to look at the pies. Today was really going to be special with all these treats. "The coconut cream one? That'll be nice after curry."

Noelani gave Raff a playful nudge. "Exactly. It's best to always think of others, even if it's tempting to eat the whole box of sweets alone." She nodded at the question about curry, her own lips twitching upwards with amusement at the spicy question. "Spicy enough to need plenty of milk or water, I hope." She did so enjoy adding in all of those Oban spices after spending so many years doing excursions in the desert. The few that they had gotten from Kahi over the years were also flavorful and made their lips tingle while also adding a hint of something sweet with the spice that Noelani adored.
"Coconut it is." Reaching coins over the counter, Noelani watched as the girl wrapped up their purchases. "Thank you." She smiled towards her and took the bag, slipping it along her arm before glancing down towards Raff. "Ready for the next shop? There's a pottery place where we could pick up some new cups and bowls for dinner tonight. The wooden ones we have are a bit old and something nicer could be a good gift, perhaps?" There was also the general store and a clothing store if they wanted more things. Noelani was thankful she had brought along a couple of large empty satchelbags for today's shopping. It felt like a long time since they had actually gotten to just wander through the village like this and Noelani perhaps was a bit eager to get whatever she could for everyone back at home.

"New bowls? Do bowls count as a gift?" With a press of her lips, Raff's hand slipped into the bag hanging on her mother's arm to seek out her specific tart. "Tart first! For the energy." Her fingers grabbed the first item she found and yanked it out with delight. Oh.. it was the almond bar. Ugh. "I want my tart." She held the bar up to be returned to the bag. Oh, right! There was a magic word to say. "Please! Then I'll be ready for the next place."

"What do you not think a bowl could be a gift?" Replied Noelani with a raised brow before realizing that well her daughter was....well a child. A quiet sigh left her lips at the realization that her enthusiasm for certain things was not always going to be shared with her children. Something interesting for her could look boring to her daughter, especially things like that unless they were magical or had some amazing decorations on them from a treasure hunt. "I suppose it's not the most fun thing to purchase, but some people enjoy having new bowls to decorate their table especially if they're large enough to contain a lot of curry." She teased lightly before reaching for the tart, only passing it over when her daughter asked politely. "Here you are. Just make certain to clean your fingers with the handkerchief before touching anything else afterwards."
Now that the tart had been passed over and Noelani had quickly taken a bite of her own lemon one, the bitter and sweet flavors making her mouth tingle and her spirits soar, the hybrid led the way out of the candy shop and down the busier street full of Matori and passing foreigners. A trio of buildings were across the square, the white-gray stone a trademark from the nearby cliffs that were mined for material, and stained glass windows with jumping dolphins and flying seagulls marked the ceramics building which was full of artisanal goods. Making certain Raff was still by her side, Noelani pushed the heavy wooden doors open and was greeted by the familiar chiming of the bell hanging just above the doorway. "Alright, just be careful what you touch. There's a lot of breakable things inside." She warned before glancing across at the displays full of different types of pottery and even little statues of glass and the like. A pair of Matori were speaking with the shopkeep, a Matori Oban hybrid with long braided hair and a warm smile who briefly glanced up towards Noelani and Raff with welcoming nod before going back to discussing a custom order for a dishware set, a gift for a new couple apparently. Noelani smiled in return, happy to see Myriana at work today, before glancing over towards the nearest display. "There's some bowls over there. Some look like they have dolphins engraved on them and another set even has little jellyfish with a pale blue glaze to make them stand out against the darker base..." She began thoughtfully, glancing towards Raff to see what she was intrigued by now that they were inside the new store.

Adults certainly were a strange species to find something like a set of bowls interesting enough to be a gift. Now, if it was a bowl that had been hidden by the sea for a few centuries, or had some magic that kept it filled with yummy food, that was worth being a gift. Once she had her tart in hand, she thanked Noelani and took a big bite of the sweet snack. Oooh, now that hit the spot! She hummed happily as she chewed and followed closely after her mother.
She finished her treat by the time they reached the next shop and wiped her hands onto her shorts to make sure they were clean enough. As it was, she had every intention of keeping her hands to herself in the shop. She had accidentally broken things before, and she hated the look she got from others when that happened. Plus, it meant her parents had to give money over for something they couldn't even use anymore! She trotted over to the first display that was pointed out for a closer look. "I like the jellyfish ones," she decided. There was much more to look at though, so she continued down the row to look. "They sure have a lot of different bowls here. I think these ones are stone!" She pointed to a set that was pale pink and sparkled almost like crystals.

"I thought you might." Replied Noelani with a soft chuckle as she let her daughter lead the way through the displays. She saw a couple that looked nice and elegant which surely would be considered boring by the children, but the pink bowls did catch her gaze when Raff pointed them out. "I think that's a quartz." Noelani replied with a smile. "It's very hard to carve, but also very sturdy and sparkles in the sunlight." Even now they both could see how the bowls sparkled, the gleam keeping Noelani's attention. Nanami did enjoy anything that was from the earth, crystals especially reminded her of the caves that she grew up around as a kawena so maybe?
"What do you think, Raff? Do you think your Makuahine would like those pink crystal bowls or should we keep seeing what they have? I think I see some amethyst and jade ones further back..." She mused thoughtfully, figuring that her daughter's decision would be loved by Ami the most. She had a soft spot for their children and Noelani never saw her disappointment in anything the children chose...unless it was a lot of sweets over healthier snacks. The very thought brought a playful grin to her lips before Noelani focused back on the displays, her gaze going towards Raff as she waited for her opinion.

"Quartz." Oh! She had seen those before, but usually just stone shaped or balls. She glanced at Noelani and then back to the bowls. "Hmm.. I think the quartz, but let's look just a little bit more." She did like the idea of the jade ones and went to go see if she could find them.
Instead, she got distracted by the sculptures. These ones looked as delicate as could be, made of opaque glass of different colors. Jellyfish with delicate tendrils and sea stars with intricate markings... "These are pretty." She looked back at Noelani. "Do people keep stuff like this in their houses?" She would be afraid to break it!

"Alright, maybe we'll find something else along the way." Suggested Noelani as she continued wandering around the store with her daughter. "Oh?" There were some onyx bowls, smoothed all the way down with golden cracks throughout. That was also an interesting piece. "The jade ones are also over here." She started before looking back towards Raff and at the sculptures. Maybe I really should get her something with jellyfish...
After a moment Noelani nodded. "They do. We actually could get a little case for figurines like that and keep it at home, if you'd like." She glanced over the little glass creations, her fingers lightly gliding across the shelf before settling on a rather teal and green jellyfish with some white spots. "What do you think? If you take care of one then maybe we could grow the collection over the years."

Her eyes widened at the offer and slid back to the sculptures. It was quite tempting.... She chewed on her lip a moment- oh, but the one her mother was touching!! That teal and green color! Those pretty, shining spots! Her eyes darted between the jellyfish and her mother as her body squirmed with delight. A persimmon tart and a sculpture meant for adults!? "Can I please, mother?" she asked eagerly. It wasn't a toy, but she knew what the gesture meant. Her mother was about to trust her with something she normally would not have gotten. Something she would have to make effort toward keeping. Something that told her that her mother was seeing how she was growing up!

Noelani studied Raff thoughtfully before nodding, a small smile crossing her lips at the reaction and polite request. "You most certainly can. You just have to promise to be really careful with it and take care of the figurine." She carefully picked up the piece, her hands cradling the jellyfish as she offered it to Raffrdeigh. "If this one lasts then maybe in return for chores or good deeds we can grow the collection." She promised with a smile, the hybrid happy to reward her daughter who despite her playful tendencies was well behaved.
"Carry it carefully and we'll pick up some bowls first before leaving. The store owner will wrap it up with paper and we can carry it out in a box, to avoid anything happening to it." Her gaze drifted towards the lushan jade ones, the hybrid nodding as she enjoyed the pale bluish green color with swirls. "I think those are the winners for me. They remind me so much of the Kahi ocean, I think your makuahine will enjoy them."
