Quote: Curious Findings (17) : Maybe it’s got something to do with the weather, or the construction, or all the other general oddities that seem to occur in Destiny City, but for the first time in nearly fifty years, the historic tree in one of Downtown Destiny City’s parks has woken up. While the tree was known for being alive and growing despite a lengthy hibernation, this is the first year that it’s sprouted leaves–but that’s not all! The unique tree has now also started growing strange pods. Because of the trees legacy–and not at all because of the oddity–the area has been taped off, but that really hasn’t been enough to stop anyone curious enough to investigate. The tree itself is several feet wide and stands roughly fifty feet tall; it’s branches spread significantly and seem like they can hold a lot of weight–which is good, because the pods growing on it have a hard brown shell and can grow up to the size of a soccer ball. Sometimes, the larger ones seem to tremble and shake in place. Maybe it's an animal trying to nibble? Maybe it’s just the wind? Maybe it’s something else. The pods can be pulled from the tree or collected from the ground; the shells are incredibly difficult to crack open, and some of them leak a strange, acidic sap that is strong enough to cause skin agitation–and in some cases there are even reports that it’s burned through wood or fabric. Sometimes, the healthier looking pods that aren’t leaking anything even seem to shake on their own, which is a mystery in itself. Another mystery is why Almadel seems so keen to trade for them…

Mabelle had only recently found out she was some sort of strange cosplayer, she wasn't really sure about all the details, after all a cat had told her about it. She came to the tree and she got a fruit pod down and she put it in her backpack just in case she could use it for something else. Then she ran the other direction not really paying attention to where she was going at the moment. She figured the area wasn't too busy so the chances of running into someone weren't that high so it would be fine. She was going full tilt.

Róka would have called many of their reflexes very practical things, overall, when given the sorts of situations they'd once found themself in, and the jobs and positions they had once held.
It just so happened that one of those reflexes was that if something came running very very fast at their legs, especially something that was smaller than they are, that they kicked it.
This had been a beneficial reflex when they had been in routine danger of running into monsters that wanted to eat them. It was not beneficial when they were in the proximity of small children. Or... medium-size children. Especially given that by Earth standards, Róka was not tall.
Had they just kicked a child in the stomach by instinct and reflex? All signs pointed to yes.
"Well," they started, and trailed off, because. Hm. If she was injured, that could prove problematic. And they did kick hard. But it'd been a glancing blow, not full-on, so perhaps she'd spring back? Small children were resilient. Róka had been one themself, once, and probably should've died seven times over at that age.

Mabelle fell backward with the kick luckily she didn't hurt the pod in her backpack. She was dazed and shocked by the random attack. She wasn't too badly hurt so she got back up and glared at her attacker. "Hey, what's the big idea?" She said dusting herself off and feeling the spot throb where she was kicked. It was going to be bruised for sure. "It was just an accident, you didn't have to kick me." She knew she had run into him but kicking her seemed way extreme for the situation. She was so mad that they were such a jerk. What was the big idea kicking at 13 year old kid. She huffed out a breath and waited for the jerk to give her an answer.

"You ran into me," Róka said, sounding faintly affronted, "and I am not responsible for my reflexes."
Okay, yes, they were, but not to that degree. It was reasonable to assume anyone that one encountered was in some way, shape, or form very lethal to one's personage.
What they were not going to say to her was I've seen rats two-thirds the size of you, but they did think it, lips a thin line. Hmph. Brat.
"Have your parents taught you to assault strangers so?"
That was something a person would say. Maybe? They didn't spend time around children, and they mostly just didn't want to bother with dealing with her at all.

Mabelle huffed "And that's a reason to kick someone? Where did you grow up Mars?" She frowned and then said "Didn't anyone every teach you to keep your feet to yourself?" She frowned "I didn't assault you.." She shook her head and rolled her eyes "You are really weird, who are you?" She asked putting her hands on her hips in annoyance. Who did this guy think he was. She stepped back and squared her shoulders she didn't want to be kicked again.

They raised an eyebrow at her suggestion they were from Mars, distinctly unimpressed. "Something like that." Certainly Róka had been taught to keep their limbs to themself, and certainly they had never taken much heed of it. Playing at politeness was one thing, but once upon a time they'd been a spiteful little whirlwind of a teenager, and they'd taken very clear note of where their limbs should not be in relation to other people -- determined by how much the other people hated it.
Or, as some people called it, forms of martial arts. Or fighting dirty. There was sort of an indeterminate slide between the two as far as Róka was generally concerned.
"You can run along now, child." They clicked their tongue. "I won't be kicking you again, if that's what you're so very worried about."

Mabelle looked at him with distrust in her eyes and she still backed away from him slowly keeping her eye on him she didn't trust him one bit not to kick her as she was leaving just for a laugh. She left as quickly as she could so she could find the merchant that wanted this strange seed. She had other things she wanted to do with her life than staying here to be insulted by these creeps. She still didn't think they were from her earth they were such rude jerks after all they must not have had parents to teach them right from wrong. Kicking someone who ran into you by accident was not polite in any way in her book. She looked over her shoulder as she turned and hurried off away from those weirdos. She sighed once she felt safe finally. This had been a really weird day and this was a really weird city indeed. She grumbled to herself there was something wrong with this city. Why did her family have to move to this weirdo town anyway!! She screamed in her head.

Honestly. Small children. Well -- medium-sized and medium-aged children on the cusp of adolescence, which took too long even to think, so -- small children. No sense of self-preservation! Willing to threaten unknown strangers! Had they been that bad?
Not in quite the same ways at all, but yes. They had been. Unlike her at this point in time, though, Róka had grown out of enough of it to look back on it with nothing more than an uncanny lack of understanding.MiddyGlow just needed one more post to get over 500 words, thank you for the thread! we are done here
