Quote:
Insidious Insects (18 ) : In the first week of July, the area around the tree is just buzzing. The call of the cicadas is loud and droning, and it’s constant. You start to hear it all over town, too. All sorts of insects seem attracted to the strange pods, and it’s not uncommon to find nearly any species curiously investigating. If you listen closely, you notice something else strange–it’s not just the bugs that you see making the familiar call of the cicada. It seems like it’s coming from inside the pods, too. Any pod that wasn’t leaking sap suddenly begins to snap open, and giant cicadas, crawl out. Their full wingspan can reach up to a foot and they’re hungry–and angry. It seems like the pods that were leaking sap were slowly rotting, but the ones that didn’t leak were being eaten from the inside out–and now that the cicadas have run out of food, they’re out for anything they can find. Though there are several notable differences between these insects and the common cicadas, their low, chirping wail makes them easy to find–as well as the fact that they spit acid. These bugs are incredibly hostile and will attack indiscriminately, powered or unpowered, human or alien, day or night. They have a protective shell that makes them easy to crush but they’re hardly the most menacing foe you’ve faced–but if they reproduce, you could be in some real trouble. Better to crush them now before they become Destiny City’s next invasive species…

It was both fortunate that the area was pretty much deserted because of all of the buzzing noise from the area around the tree. It was also unfortunate that there was so much buzzing noise from the area around the tree. If Versailles hadn't been thinking that something strange was going on he would be safe in his house, not being annoyed by his hair and not going deaf from the buzzing of all of these insects!

But the city didn't appear to be doing anything about it, and if he wanted his, mostly, peace and quiet back, something had to be done! Which is why Versailles was here, moving his hair out if his face as usual, and attempting to see if he could do anything about the strange "pod" in front of him. It was too bad he didn't have any magic that had to do with fire or else he would have just lit the darn thing on the spot.

It appeared that he wasn't alone either. He felt the aura of a Squire moving toward the same area. Perhaps they had a common goal in mind. Or maybe the Squire was one of those "all life is sacred" ones that would want to fight him for attempting to relieve so many others of the horrible noise onslaught that they were being constantly subjected to.

Spei didn't mind cicadas, not at all. Yeah, they were a little annoying as they bumbled through the air and into one's face during the brief periods they were about, but their constant droning in the warmth of summer made him think of trips to the shore as a kid with his parents, and hanging around doing nothing in the backyard where he grew up. Fond memories, conjured by the buzzing of an insect that was just looking for a mate. It made him think too of trance music, which often had a droning undercurrent beneath the driving dance beat.

The buzzing that was going on now around the big tree in the park where the Star Festival was going on, though, was far from pleasant.

Approaching the tree, he noticed two things: one, that there were strange pods on the trunk of the tree, not unlike giant mutant versions of the egg casings left by cicadas; and two, that there was a Chaos aura nearby, one that he was able to determine was yet another corrupt Senshi. He sighed sharply. What was it with him and freaking corrupt Senshi? He seemed to attract them like moths to a lightbulb. It was downright irritating.

"I know you're out there," he said flatly to the corrupt, loudly enough to be heard over the incessant droning buzz. "I won't attack you. Do you know what is up with the buzzing?"

Versailles wasn't sure if it was the loud buzzing or his hearing failing him, but he only just caught the other's question. "No I don't. I wish it would stop which is why I'm out here. If I have to destroy these pods to do so I will." He said, slightly distracted by the incessant buzzing still going on.

Suddenly the buzzing stopped. Something was going to happen and he could see, and now hear, the pod in front of him cracking. He jumped back. "I think we may have a problem with these pods!" He said to the Squire as something started to crawl out of it.

He couldn't help but make a disgusted face as it made it's way out, flapping it's wings to shake off whatever sticky substance was on it. And it was big. Too big. Like at least 100 cicadas in the form of a giant cicada big. And it sounded like there were others...

Spei was about to say something about the pods – which seemed to be the source of the buzzing – when it suddenly stopped. He froze in place as the corrupt Senshi jumped back and the pod in front of him began to crack open. "I, um, think you're right," he nodded. "I think we do have a problem here…"

The thing that emerged from the pod was enormous, and Spei shuddered reflexively as it moved and spread its wings, vibrating them to dry them. He didn't mind regular cicadas, as noted, but he didn't like large insects as a rule. This thing was beyond large-insect size, bigger than any bug he'd ever seen or heard of. Like some kind of primordial monster cicada.

The buzzing started up again from other pods attached to the tree. "We need to destroy those pods before more of these monster bugs get out." Finally able to move, the horrified Squire backed up, nearly bumping into the corrupt. "I don't think these things are as bumbling as the normal-sized ones." As he spoke, the giant cicada that had just hatched appeared to catch the two men in its sights, and buzzing angrily, flew toward them.

"Aaaa," Spei gasped, raising an arm to fend it off. It seemed to be deliberately attacking them – a monster cicada with the disposition of an angry hornet. Swinging his buckler shield, he backhanded it across the head with a clang. That only served to make it even more angry.

"Get the pods, I'll take care of this thing!"

Versailles growled at the Squire's orders. Less because of the order and more because of the dirty work that he had been assigned. He did not want to touch those pods, even with his boots. Who knew what kind of gross semi-liquids they contained!

But true to his word the Squire appeared to be going after the big bug so Versailles could only do his part and take care of the... pods. He made another disgusted face.

He walked up to more of them and could tell that some were just about to open like the one before. He steeled himself, and muttered, "Here goes nothing..." As he managed to yank one of the pods off of the tree and throw it on the ground, far away from the both of them. It made a disgusting squishing sound and Versailles though he felt a little sick, but had to keep pushing.

He grabbed another and threw that as well.

Spei whacked the huge cicada with his shield again, and the thing made a chittering sound and clicked its mandibles together in irritation. "You think you're going to bite me," he said in disbelief, swinging at its head again. This time, though, the bug buzzed backward and evaded the shield. "Aaaa you're just horrible."

He wondered if his shield's spell would have any effect on it, but before he could act on that, the thing attacked again. Leaping back, he felt one of its legs catch on the sleeve of his uniform. "Aaaa too close…" Spei reflexively swung for the bug's head again with all his strength, hitting it soundly with a clang and nearly knocking it out of the air. Taking advantage of its stunned state, he lashed out with a booted foot, catching it in the abdomen. It screamed, a blood-curdling sound that made him shudder. At least he knew it could be hurt.

"You liked that, didn't you?" he growled at the bug. "How do you like this?" Dashing over to where the corrupt Senshi was peeling pods off the great tree, Spei kicked one of the remaining pods, crushing it into a disgusting oozing mess. Another scream escaped the giant insect. It didn't like that one little bit. He hoped the corrupt was destroying those pods quickly; maybe it'd serve as a distraction to the cicada and he could hit it with his magic.

Spei didn't have a chance to try his spell on it, though, before it attacked again, grabbing his shield in its legs and biting the rim. "Hey, get off!" he yelped and shook his arm, trying to dislodge it. He tried peeling a leg off with his free hand to no avail. This was not going well.

"Um, Senshi dude," he shouted at the corrupt as he kicked and crushed another pod on the tree. "Need a little help here…"

Oh good. At least he would be able to get away from the gross pods now that the Squire was asking for help. He quickly ran over to the other and snapped his fingers while looking at the mutant insect. "Share the Splendor." He said as he moved his fingers. A light shone on the insect and he only hoped that it would be distracted by the shiny.

He moved over to the Squire and attempted to remove the bug from his shield. "You could throw the shield away." Versailles said as he attempted to grab at it's... legs, he shivered with disgust, to try and get it off of the shield. "I'm sure you'll get it back." Could Knights not re-summon their weapons like Agents? If that was true he counted himself lucky to be a Senshi.

Quote:
With this attack, Versailles snaps his finger and let's off a brilliant light shines down on his opponent. A target within a 10 foot radius is suddenly put in fine jewels, gems, and/or other things that would make the target feel splendor and would distract them. Lasts 25 seconds. Can be used twice in battle.

"Throw the shield away…" Spei looked at the corrupt Senshi as if he'd discovered the hidden secrets of the universe. "You know, I always ******** forget I can do that," the Moon Squire said flatly, dismissing his buckler and instantly dislodging the bug. It buzzed backward, then before it could attack again it was hit with the Senshi's magic. Screeching loudly, it flailed as the dazzling bright light temporarily blinded it.

Emboldened, Spei kicked the thing in the abdomen again and ran for the tree. The monster insect screamed again, and a thick trickle of bug ichor started leaking out of the carapace. "Got him," he said, turning to the tree and ripping off one of the pods, hurling it to the ground and stepping on it to crush it. He grabbed another pod and yanked as the angry cicada flew for him, then shoved the pod into its mandibles. "Eat this."

That made the giant bug shriek and fly toward the corrupt Senshi. "Look out, here it comes," warned Spei, pulling another pod off the tree and smashing it to the ground. This corrupt seemed a good guy in a fight; he was pretty confident the Senshi could take care of himself. And the bug.

"Oh thanks, I definitely wanted it to come after me!" Versailles shouted sarcastically as the monster bug decided that it might have an easier time eating the one with all of the hair. "Share the Splendor!" He said, a little more loudly this time. The bug shrieked again as it was blinded by the light and Versailles took that opportunity to, well he really didn't want to do it but he didn't quite have the leg coordination to pull a kick off, punch it to the ground, and before the bug could take a chance to scream again it hit the ground with a disgusting "splat!" hitting Versailles with it's... juices.

"UGH! That's disgusting!" He said, making a face at the now not-moving bug. He decided to kick the body into a tree, making sure that it was actually dead. "It's all in my hair!" He whined loudly as he looked at his long locks. Being a Corrupt was the worst!

He looked over at the Squire. "You get the rest of the pods?"

"I got them," Spei called back to the corrupt Senshi, ripping the last pod off the tree and throwing it to the ground before stomping on it with extreme predjudice. "Thanks, friend, we did it. You were a huge help, I really mean that."

He meant the 'friend' comment, too. After that, he really didn't want to fight the man. In fact, he'd just as soon they both got out of there, powered down so they could clean the bug goo off of them, and went home. But Spei wasn't about to power down in front of a corrupt.

"What do you say we call this even, fair and square, and just forget we ever ran into each other?" The Moon Squire looked around at the mess they had made. "I sure don't want to clean this up..."

Versailles let out a small sigh of relief. At least he hopefully wouldn't be getting any more... ugh bug guts on him soon. "I just wish it wasn't... bugs." He said, trying not to look at his now somewhat gooey hair.

As much as he would have liked to make a connection with the Knight for purification purposes, he just wanted to power down as soon as possible so he didn't have all of this dirty hair. "Yeah, yeah. Let's just get out of here. I feel like I need ten showers." He said while waving his hands, making sure there was no bug particles on them. "Other bugs can get to them or something. But we should definitely get out of here."

He gave the Squire a small wave and teleported away from the area, close to his home, and immediately powered down, a shiver going down his body at the thought of what had gotten onto him. A shower was the only thing on his mind as he made his way home as quickly as possible.
