Hobbies:
yo-ho, haul together, hoist the colors high (Pirates): Once upon a time, Huanjing saw an episode of a cartoon for young kids where pirates got involved, and she decided that they were Her Thing. Some kids are into trains, or dinosaurs, or Barbies, and Huanjing is really into pirates. She thinks they’re so cool, with how they don’t follow rules, and sail on the ocean, and get treasure from places. At first, her parents thought she might end up growing out of the pirates phase, but she very much has not, and she would love to tell you all about pirates. This book she checked out from the library is about Zheng Yi Sao! She commanded the biggest pirate fleet, like, ever! Do you want to read it with her? emotion_kirakira
the soul is like a violin string (Violin): An outgrowth of the thing about pirates, really. You see, so many songs that are associated with pirates end up featuring the fiddle pretty prominently, and Huanjing has decided that she wants to learn how to play the instrument that is in so many songs she likes. She’s looking to start lessons soon, and can’t wait to share this music with more people.
bend it like………mommy, what’s “beckham”? (Soccer): Huanjing first got into soccer, frankly, because all of her friends were doing it. Yes, she has heard her grandparents’ with their “If all of your friends ran in front of a moving car, would you follow them” questions, but Huanjing thinks that’s a silly way to look at things? Obviously, lao lao and tai tai, soccer is different from running in front of a moving car? Soccer does have running, but it’s on a field and you kick a ball around? They are different things, actually??
Anyway, Huanjing started soccer because all her friends were doing it, and she has kept at it because she enjoys all of the running around and the sense of camaraderie that comes from working together with her teammates. She gets that some of her soccer-friends are very competitive, and she kinda understands why? But she’s just as happy to play on her city parks and rec kiddie soccer team as she is split up on impromptu playground teams and kick the ball around with each other.
Virtues:
you have ten fingers? i have ten fingers! let’s be friends! (Friendly): Hello! Huanjing has just met you and she loves you. Bright and outgoing, she will try her best to make friends with almost anybody. Her tactics for making friends are usually pretty straightforward—smile a lot, be nice, ask them what they like, etc.—because she thinks honesty is the best policy for approaching friendships. And she honestly wants to be around people and share things with them, whether that means fun new experiences or the cookies her dad put in her lunch.
without courage, you can’t practice any other virtue consistently (Brave): Huanjing would like to say that she is not afraid of anything. She knows that she would be lying if she did that, because she is afraid of lots of things actually, but she would really like to say it. One of the lessons from her dad that has most entrenched itself in her heart is that a lot of things in life are scary, yes, but Huanjing takes a lot after her jiujiu with her spirit, her kindness, and her passion. Specifically, she takes after her er-jiu (necessary clarification, since she does have three jiujius, even if she only knows where two of them are right now), and her er-jiu always pushed through it when he was afraid of things.
Huanjing doesn’t really remember said er-jiu, because he left the family when she was barely a year old, but she knows that this means her baba believes in her and she doesn’t want to let him or her er-jiu down. So, when things are scary, she tries to push through the fear anyway and be brave to protect her sister, or stand up for her friends, or do whatever thing needs doing. It’s like another thing that her baba has said, namely that the only time you can be brave is when you’re afraid and push through it.
taut and vibrating like a guitar string (Enthusiastic): Huanjing is the sort of girl who lives her life in CAPSLOCK! WITH MULTIPLE!! EXTRANEOUS!!! EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!! Just to make sure that everybody understands where she’s coming from!!!!! Namely, she’s coming from a perspective that finds most things at least some degree of exciting and cool, and she wants everybody to know that she feels like everything is exciting and cool. Setbacks and mistakes may happen, but she remains easily excited about everything going on around her and eager to experience all of it.
without idealism, we can only hope or starve to death (Idealistic): Huanjing likes to see the best in situations, even when things are going terribly. She also likes to see the best in people, even when they are being cruel, or pushing others around, or otherwise acting like jerks. Part of this comes out of being a ten-year-old who has two loving, supportive parents and hasn’t really experienced very much of The (so-called) Real World. But even beyond her lack of practical, real-world experience, Huanjing herself tries to be kind to people and put more positive energy out into the world, and she likes to think that other people are the same way. As far as she’s concerned: friendship and kindness can save the day, the power of love will always win if you’re willing to fight for it, and even when things look miserable, there is reason for hope.
Flaws:
i can no longer thrive in this household (Sensitive): Huanjing very much admires her mama, and how her mama is so resilient and doesn’t seem to let the mean things that people say get to her, like, ever? ……However, Huanjing is very much not her mother’s daughter, in this regard. It is very easy to hurt her feelings and more generally, very easy to upset her. Even if she is all smiles while ostensibly accepting that not everybody wants to be her friend, she will take the rejection to heart and probably fixate on it, wondering if she did something wrong to make whoever turned her down not like her. If her teacher is upset with some bad behavior in the class recently, even if Huanjing has not been engaging in it herself, she will feel guilty and like she is being personally called out. She will try to push through the hurt feelings anyway, because that’s what brave people do? But her feelings will still be hurt.
impetuous youth longs only for what is dazzling (Impulsive): Huanjing Guo is very enthusiastic about things, you see!! And Huanjing Guo wants to get out there and DO STUFF, also!! She doesn’t like waiting for things to happen and regularly wonders why people don’t say that “right now” and “hurry up” are virtues instead of patience (which is very boring and should not be considered a virtue in the first place, please and thank you). Rather than wait, she prefers to get things done as quickly as possible, especially so she can enjoy the Fun Things that she’s so excited about. This often leads her to make rash decisions, run into Situations without thinking or considering anybody’s safety, skip over steps that only reveal their true importance later because they seem like a waste of her time, etc.
sometimes i get over-excited, shoot off at the mouth (Short-Tempered): A downside of being so full of enthusiasm and so sensitive is that Huanjing gets frustrated very easily when she’s upset. From frustration, it can be a very short leap to anger. She doesn’t always have the best control of her temper (though she at least tries not to take her anger and frustration out on other people so much as on inanimate objects), or know how to best deal with situations that don’t go exactly the way she wants them to. Angry tears happen pretty regularly with Huanjing, as does yelling or otherwise making angry, frustrated noises.
her angel eyes saw the good in many devils (Naïve): Huanjing’s extended family has A Lot going on with them, and someday, she will learn about it. Someday, she will become more aware of the generational trauma going on among her mama, her jiujius, and her a-yis, as well as how her grandparents, great-grandmother, and the great-grandfather who died when she was six all factor into it. Even outside of the family drama, Huanjing will someday learn about how the world is often not a very nice place, actually……but as yet, she is full of starry-eyed ignorance that takes almost everyone and almost everything at face-value, assumes the best even when she maybe probably shouldn’t, and cannot fathom why somebody would ever choose to be mean for fun when it’s so much more fun to be nice.
