Dant had asked for the day off at his dishwasher job at the restaurant. He had something of more importance. He gathered pencils (making sure that they were sharpened), papers and placed them neatly on the dining room table and placed three chairs around the table and then stood next to it with some money in his pocket that he had saved. Finally, he called out to Myles and Jeremy. "Hey guys, if you have a moment... I was wondering if you could come in here for a bit? I have something I would like to ask you?"

Myles had been using part of the table to do a bit of crafting–nothing too extreme today, he was just using a specialized card cutter to round out the corners for the jewelry backings he used. The television was on in the background but no one was watching it, it was just on for some noise. Jeremy had some cheesy action movie on and was in the process of cleaning up the kitchen.
He’d made two ‘almost-homemade’ pizzas; while he was at the grocery store, he’d bought some of the fresh dough from the bakery and he’d made some for the three of them. It still had to cook for another fifteen minutes but the kitchen was already almost spotless and the smell of pizza was only just starting to spread through their house.
It was amazing what having a kitchen large enough to cook had done for their meals; though Myles was likely to just grab Lunchables or make cereal, Jeremy had occasionally been using the extra space to make more than just frozen meals.
Myles eyes’ were on Dant almost immediately, curious and enthusiastic. “Is everything okay?” he asked, and leaned forward just a bit as he tried to see what Dant had.
“What is it?” Jeremy asked, wiping his hands off on the sides of his pants as he joined them at the table.

Dant looked nervously at his feet and then gulped. Finally he steeled himself and looked into their eyes. "Jeremy and Myles I appreciate all that you have done for me, while I stay here. You've given me a place to stay, food to eat, even the clothes off your legs - er back, and your very friendship. But now I must ask for one thing more, to help me navigate society better..." he paused. "Will you guys teach how to read and write in English?"

Jeremy had been squinting at Dant for a while as he spoke, and when he finally got to the question–
Jeremy snorted. “Dant, why do you do that. You make it sound like it’s life and death. You just want to learn how to read and write?”
Myles placed a hand over his chest and exhaled heavily in relief. “You scared me! I was worried you were going to say you were leaving or something, and never coming back!”
Jeremy exhaled and whistled. “It’s a lot of work, but if you’re willing to try, we can try. It’s been a while for me, I don’t know if I’m the best teacher.”
“Oh, I’m not a good teacher. I can hardly read and write as is. No, I’m teasing,” Myles insisted, but laughed in a way that said he clearly didn’t think much of his skills in either.
Jeremy gave him a look and shook his head before he looked at the spread of things Dant already had. “What did you bring with you? We can give you the run down of things. Soleiyu helped a friend do this before, after we get the basics down we might be able to ask him for some help so you can keep practicing.”

When Jeremy why Dant acted like it was life and death, Dant turned away, his human face emblazed with shame. Even Myles acted like it was some joke. "Because on Sekhmet it was." He was quiet for a moment and then spoke. "I was a Goldskin. What you might call the Common People. The only ones lower were the Platinumskins. The Silverskins were Nobles, and the Bronzeskins were Royalty. It was forbidden for anyone lower than a Silverskin to learn to read, - even if he was the Senshi. The punishment was death; to those who learned ... and those who taught." After a moment of silence, he spoke again, "It was Sailor Etamin, whose Planet represented the education center of the group, who finally decided that everyone should learn to read, especially a Senshi. He did not dare force this upon my World - there would have been a rift in the group, but he took it upon himself to teach me - in secret - the reading of the language we had, and I never regretted it, except once...." Was he imagining it, or were Human Tears coming from the eyes of his Human Glamur? Sekhmites did not cry - they had other ways of expressing themselves.

“Hey,” Myles was quick to reassure. He was the gentler of the two, and he placed his hand over Dant’s. “It’s okay, I’m sorry. Things aren’t like that on Earth. We try to get everyone to read here. No one’s going to give you a hard time for it, it’s safe to learn here. Honest. We’ll help. And Jeremy’s a good teacher, he used to help me when we were younger.”
Jeremy was quiet, and reached a hand up to rub at the back of his neck uncertainly. Sure, he’d helped Myles when they were kids, but that was a long time ago. He didn’t want either of them to get their hopes up, they’d just have to see how this was going to go.
“We didn’t know,” Myles said gently, but he was smiling reassuringly again. “But we’ll teach you whatever we can, okay?”
Jeremy sank down into the chair finally and nodded. “Yeah. Sorry. We’ll help. You okay?”
