If the smell outside of the cafe was enough to make Jaina’s stomach rumble, the smell when they actually went inside was almost enough for her to start salivating…which. Honestly wouldn’t do.

The two were seated quickly at least, and had water delivered just as quickly and when the server had scuttled off with their drink orders she took in a deep breath, giving a pleased sigh. “Oh yeah. I. Can see this becoming a place that I’ll start to come often, and you’re welcome to come with me whenever, just so you know. I’ll even treat every once in a while if your tips for your brilliant acting run dry that day.”

Opening her menu, Jaina fell quiet as she looked it over, but something was bothering her and she had to say it before it got away…or.

Before the moment passed.

“I know that you’re a big strong man and everything, but…it’s really not that safe to just…play dead. This city is filled with freaks and strange things, I hope you know.” She knew, that was for damn sure but…

“If you want, I can just do my studying with you when you’re…rehearsing and that way if anything tries to take off a foot, I can just smack it around with my textbook.”

He'd been waiting for Jaina to say whatever was weighing on her and when she did finally let it out he was torn between utter amusement and the pleased, indulgent feeling he got whenever someone indicated they'd take care of him. Leaning close to her, he spoke in a low, confiding voice, "I need you to know, I'm actually..." his postured weakened in a half swoon, " a tragically weak man of middling height. So if trouble does turn up, please save me first, before you rescue any women or children."

Sitting back. Mal rested his chin in one hand and gave her a grin, "I wouldn't mind the company to be honest, at the very least, you could keep people from putting things my hair." A dismayed look passed across his features, "What if someone put gum in it next time?" He didn't mind the ah, haters, as it were. But he had his own lines in the sand and those usually involved his appearance. It would almost be preferable to lose a foot than get some tragic hair cut.

"Have you had run-ins with the city's strange things? I only moved here for high school. and then I was living in the dorms most of the time, so it's all rumors and hearsay to me."

Snorting slightly, Jaina looked at him over the top of her menu. “Mal, my darling. I think we’ve already established that I’m the Prince Charming to your Sleeping Beauty, so of course I would protect you, you’re short and tiny and need it.” Lowering the menu so that she could properly stick her tongue out at her new friend, Jaina snickered. “You’re not that short, but i’m still taller so. That makes me the protector here, and…ah. Yeah.”

She paused. “I would never let them put gum in your hair, and if they did I’d get it out quickly, but. As for the strange things…I’ve had a lot of run-ins, yeah. I’ve lived here all my life, after all so…I’m kind of a pro with the Destiny City strange…s**t.” Shrugging, Her eyes lit on a turkey sandwich that honestly sounded delightful…a spicy cranberry mayo? She’d try it.

“But, I’d be happy to recount some of my stories if you’d want to hear. Or…maybe answering questions might be better.”

He sulked a little at tiny until she reassured him. Honestly even if Jaina was shorter than him...she'd still probably have to be his protector, given his opossum-like skill of "passing out" at the threat of doing anything too unpleasant. But she could find that out later.

Not bothering to look at the menu, Mal instead just focused on Jaina, "I love hearing stories." This was possibly only the second personal detail he'd offered her so far, third if you counted his name. "What's the story you most like to tell people?"

And there was a hint, in his interested gaze, that he was also more than willing to hear the story she liked the least.

The server stopped by, giving Jaina time to consider, and he ordered a seasonal salad and the week's specialty macaron, along with a cup of mulled cider from the last batch of the season.

Truthfully, Jaina was glad for the respite that was provided from making her order, and she did get the turkey sandwich and a cup of the French Onion Soup, which…hopefully this place wouldn’t ruin.

She took the time to mull over a few things she could tell him, and finally settled on one from the very distant past. Changed, of course but…still.

“Okay, so…you know that there are monsters and all that? Well. When I was young, like…ten or so…a baby. I used to go hunting for them with a plastic lightsaber? Because of course, I had loved Star Wars when I was young…how could I not. It was perfect…” The sigh she gave clearly indicated that it was no longer perfect and Jaina shook her head sadly.

“Anyway…if you hit the monsters enough, they turn to dust, so that’s kind of cool.”

"You killed monsters at ten years old with your plastic lightsaber," Mal summarized with a grin. It wasn't the first time he'd heard of weird animals or outright monsters in the, Though usually it came in the form of vague warnings, and while there were certainly other reasons as to why he never went home alone from a club at night, those warnings were never quite forgotten. So he didn't treat the deal as a joke, but it also wasn't quite real to Mal either.

"So did you keep doing it? Are you still going out and turning monsters into dust?" No wonder she was so ready to be Prince Charming.

“Look, Mal I was a very spunky kid who was sure if I worked hard enough I’d get to become an actual Jedi. It obviously didn’t happen but…that about sums it up, yeah. It wasn’t the smartest thing to do, but between that and using a jungle gym to…and I quote myself here, most likely but. to train my reflexes and build muscles. Most of my adventures happened at the park, but…I did beat a few of the monsters to dust, yeah.”

Giving an embarrassed sort of grimace, Jaina shrugged. “We do strange things as kids, right?”

He didn’t need to know that she was one of the Senshi that ran around the city. He had enough to go off of for now.

“If you ever want an adventure, I’d be happy to take you to the playground and we can play whack a mole with some lightsabers. If they still make them as sturdy as they used to.”

"Only if I get to hide behind you," Mal replied honestly. "Sounds like you were really cute as a kid. You're still cute now, of course. But it's hard to top a baby training montage on the jungle gym."

Their drinks came, filling their little nook with even more warmth and rich scents. Mal's hands were always a little colder, and the feeling of wrapping his fingers around the warm mug felt luxurious after spending the day and a bit of the night outside.

"If someone was to make a movie about your life, would you want it to be that sort of story? The kind of kids-on-bikes adventure where the spunky kid takes on monsters and bad guys with her friends? Hearts full of determination and toys in hand?" He traced his fingers along the handle of the mug. "Or...? What other story do you like for Jaina? It doesn't have to be a true one. Autobiographies usually aren't."

“What kind of story would I want for Jaina? I’m not sure.” She took a sip of her drink and thought about it, and finally just shrugged. “I have absolutely no idea. Jaina…is still a mystery, even to me, I suppose. But. That’s okay. I’m figuring everything out.”

Her stomach gave an almost angry sounding grumble and she grinned. “Jaina is hungry and wants to eat. And I suppose, she would want to still be a hero like I always wanted to be. That was my goal growing up, you know. Be a hero, and, you’re pretty cute yourself, just so you know.”

"Of course I know," Mal assured her and tasted his cider. "I've been told it's my only redeeming quality." He didn't seem to mind this fact at all.

Their food came a moment later, summoned, maybe, by Jaina's stomach. After the first few bites of salad, focused on the taste and textures, Mal shifted his focus back onto the conversation and his dinner partner.

"So now we have the story of a girl, once the bravest, toughest little girl on the block. But then life happened, and the world happened," Mal narrated quietly. "And years go by. She not a little girl anymore, but she's still tough and brave. Only her virtues are being wasted on things like calculus. But one day, she comes across a beautiful princess. The most beautiful in fact." He adds modestly.

Jaina shook her head and lifted her sandwich, taking a large bite the first chance she could. “Sounds about right, so now, what does she do with the most beautiful princess? Besides protect him from the naughty people who want to put gum in his hair. I feel as though this is going to become our running theme, and honestly? I’m okay with it. You’re terribly amusing…and this sandwich is terribly delightful, so I’m going to thank you for recommending this place as well.”

Taking another bite, Jaina glanced to the side and shrugged. “Like. This is honestly the most fun I’ve had in a while. I’m quite glad that I met you, beautiful princess. I’ll be sure to keep you safe from now on. Which, makes me think that we should exchange numbers.”

Mal raised his eyebrows and put down his fork. He sat back in his chair for a moment, just looking at her before flashing a grin. He pulled out his phone, unlocking it before sliding it over to Jaina. She was treated to the image of his wallpaper, and surprisingly enough, it wasn't a picture of him, but of three fluffy black dogs, posed very properly on a velvet fainting couch. (Though the lockscreen, now that was a much more characteristic, much more risque flavor of selfie.)

Sitting up straight he leaned forward, looking up at her through his lashes, "Prince Charming can do whatever she wants with the beautiful princess. After all, not everyone is up to the task of keeping me safe."

Jaina took the phone and shook her head with a laugh and punched her number into it, sending herself a text so that she would have his as well. “It might be a difficult task, especially if I’m going to take you into the gritty parts of the city…you might have to learn to protect yourself at least a little...but I do have to say..with our size? The playground equipment won’t be difficult to do, all we’ll have to worry about is hitting our heads on the monkey bars. Falling off of them won’t be an issue…unless we change things up and work on the upper arm strength and…whatever other strength to do them upside down…that could be a pretty neat way to get ripped…or whatever.”

And…suddenly she wanted to. Going back and trying to reclaim the joy of being a Senshi now that she was stuck as someone she never expected…perhaps it could be fun trying to push herself to be even better than she was as a kid.

…after all, who the hell hit their peak at ten? It was dumb.

“I know I’ll be more than up to that task, but my Sleeping Beauty, you won’t be as useless as you pretend to be in the movie, trust me. I’ll make a warrior princess out of you eventually.”

Mal's grin brightened at the mention of "the gritty parts of the city" and then quickly froze when Jaina started speculating about...was she suggesting their own playground training montage?

Head dropping, his shoulders began to quiver with a huffy bit of laughter. He did say whatever she wants. Lifting his head with a dramatic flip of the hair, Mal slouched back in his seat. "Alright," he drawled. "I'll let you try to toughen me up." And he would do his best to not live up to her expectations.

"So when do we start, coach?"

“How about Friday night? No classes on Saturday so we can simply stay out as long as necessary.” The grin on Jaina’s face matched the one on Mal’s one now. “You’ll regret it, I’m sure but. I’ll make sure that you’re at least my sleeping beauty with an attitude...more of an attitude than you already have, at least.”

Laughing, she dug back into her sandwich and began to plan for just what they would do…

…maybe…she could find some chaos guardian cat who could let her know if it was worth it to try….but.

Then again, maybe she could just do this on her own. And if it worked out well, then it worked out well…and if it didn’t…

It was going to be fun regardless.
