There was a body on the bench near the fountain on the south side of campus. While not huge, it was sprawling and long-legged, clearly in a state of comfort despite the hardness of the bench and the chill of early spring twilight. Near the body, at the foot of the bench, there was a bouquet of flowers with a note, a second note in an envelope, complete with wax seal. There was a small, well worn book, the title on the cover indecipherable. There was a cup of a change, and a small, hand-written sign that said: Acting, do not disturb. Someone had thoughtfully laid a hoodie on the body, and another had tucked a flower into the body's lustrous black curls. Someone else had put a long stick in that same hair, with a torn notebook paper flag, boldly stating: I SUCK! There was a cheerful purple bat plushie wedged under that head of curls. The sky darkened, the air cooled. All in all, Malory, who'd intended to work on his play a beautiful corpse abilities, would wake to find himself amidst a very different aesthetic than he'd envisioned.

Jaina had kind of tried to make friends over at the school, but sometimes it was just…hard. She was taking two classes at DCU, trying to start over again and get moving on with her life, figuring out a new path and trying to…just. Live again.
Spending time on campus on the days that she had her classes made things a little bit easier and made her feel like…she kind of belonged but.
As she sat working on studying for an exam in her calculus class, she regretted…well. Everything. Math always made her regret everything. She had been sitting near the fountain and had kept an eye on the person who was sleeping on the nearby bench.
One good thing about school was the strange people that would be on campus.
As the sun vanished, she realized that she couldn’t keep studying and perhaps it would be a good idea to just go home and give up for the day. The exam wasn’t until Friday and there was still time...ish.
With the sleeping…actor Jaina finally went over and poked him in the shoulder. “Are you even alive? Like, I’ve been sitting here with you for ages and I just. Don’t understand what kind of acting this is supposed to be.”

At the poke, Mal slowly opened his eyes to look at the girl above him, eyes soft and dazed as she spoke. He stayed quiet for almost too long, but then he shifted up on his elbows, and answered, voice quiet and husky with sleep. "A beautiful corpse, sleeping beauty, a doll left alone after play." His gaze gradually became clearer, and he took her in, tall and with the sliver of sunlight glinting in her hair. Not a friend or a classmate or an ex, an unfamiliar face. A smile slowly spread across Mal's features and he asked, "Was I good?"

Jaina’s lips twitched slightly and she couldn’t help but return his smile, though she shook her head in amusement. “I was starting to wonder if I should call over the campus police, especially when the other people kept just. doing things to you and you didn’t so much as twitch. If I hadn’t seen you breathing I would have freaked out a bit, so yeah. That could count as being good, I suppose.”
Tucking a bit of hair behind an ear, Jaina held a hand out to the actor. “I’ll keep it in mind though, that you’re trying to be sleeping beauty, I’ll be sure to wake you with a kiss if that’s what it takes, Mr. Nappy Nap. I’m Jaina.”

There was a flash of teeth, a little smug, at the positive audience feedback. When he took her hand, Jaina would find that she really did have to haul him up for all the effort he contributed to it. At least he was pretty light. "Please do," he sounded petulant, as if he had suffered some great grievance. "It's terrible not be woken with a kiss." Lifting a hand to comb through his mussed up hair, he stopped to pluck out the rough little I SUCK! flag. Giving it a small wave, he said, "I'm Malory, but you can call me Mal."

“It’s nice to meet you, Mal. I think I’ll just stick to calling you sleeping beauty, but, I do like Mal. Names that start with M are…pretty swell.”
Jaina felt her smile falling slightly but forced herself to keep it on. “I don’t really have any nicknames but, you’re free to call me Jaina, of course.” Hesitating slightly she shrugged. “It’s getting pretty late and my brain is more than a little fried from all the studying I just did, if you’d want to go grab something to eat with me? I don’t…normally talk this much with people but. You seem rather interesting and I’d like to get to know you a little better.”
Because who didn’t want to get to know people who just played dead in the middle of campus?

He pulled out the flower from his hair and absently handed it to Jaina, then bent down to pick up the bouquet with its note and the second envelope, recognizing the writing as belonging to his extremely attentive dog walker. The cup of change was inspected and then placed back down on the bench for whoever else wanted it. It was less a decision based on generosity and one much more based on a dislike of carrying coins around. Picking up the hoodie, he sniffed it, and, finding the lingering cologne to be comfortably familiar, put it on. "There's a small cafe off campus," he glanced up at Jaina as he spoke, liking this kind of straightforward request and motivation. "It's open late." With a bit more care than the flowers, he picked up the book and the plush and then his arms were full. Standing across from her, he looked like some late echo of Valentine's Day.

For a moment, Jaina stared blankly at the flower that he handed her and finally, she took it and tucked it into her own hair, her cheeks feeling just a bit warmer than they had been. “Food sounds good no matter where it is. Lead the way, sleeping beauty.”
She watched as he left the money but picked everything else up, it…seemed a gallant thing to do, and Jaina seemed thoughtful, half wondering if she should just. Really try to make this guy a friend.
“What sort of food do they have? Or is it your run of the mill college town greasy spoon place with burgers and all that?”

She wouldn't see his smile deepen at sleeping beauty, but it was there. "Mostly sandwiches, soups, and baked goods. They're all absolutely over-priced," Mal assured her as they walked, as if their bagel being too cheap was something people worried about. "It's connected to a late night book store. I imagine they'd like to keep the grease to a minimum." Turning his head to get a better measure of her next to him, taller than his first impression, clearly friendly but not flattering. Alone. She'd likely been studying alone the whole time by the fountain, hadn't she? "So what's your major?" The most typical question he could ask, boring and harmless.

“Oh that question!” Jaina gave a slightly amused, slightly hysteric laugh and shrugged. “Honestly, I’m not sure yet. I only enrolled on a whim…I had some…pretty big life changes happen to me a few years ago and…I’m still working to find stable ground so I figured…let’s try school. That’s what people do to feel normal and accomplished, right? Plus, I’ll be able to make some friends.”
The look that she threw to Mal was almost bitter enough to taste and Jaina shrugged. “SPoiler alert, I haven’t yet. I’m just. Doing my best and fighting tooth and nail with this stupid calculus class and I hate every moment. I suppose that I know my major won’t involve math so…that narrows it down. A little. But! The cafe sounds great, and look, I get plenty of money from my brother who is loaded so overpriced is fine with me.”
He didn’t need to know her whole tragic backstory. Not yet anyway. Maybe if…well. Maybe later.

"Only about two months left for calculus left," Mal hummed, considering and curious about the life changes that would leave her seeming so...lost. Jaina seemed like someone who should have friends, easily and constantly at hand. "No friends and struggling to learn what you don't even like sounds boring at best." Depressing as hell at worst. They were nearing the edge of the campus grounds. He shifted his load to nestle in one arm, and with his free hand pushed the bat plush playfully at her face. "You should join us in the drama department instead. Even if it's not what you want to do forever at least we're fun." And if her brother was loaded, why bother stressing over degree requirements for some boring career that required that sort of thing? What was the point of having money if not to just, do whatever you liked without worry?

“That’s true, if it doesn’t kill me by then…and It’s. I’m kind of used to it now. I spend most of the time just hanging out with my nieces, and they’re great. I play way too many video games too but. Honestly? This is the most I’ve spoken to someone outside of my family in like…two years, so. That’s. Really pathetic when I say it out loud. So how about we forget that I did say it and touch on the top of me in the drama department…”
Jaina hesitated and huffed, reaching for the bat and snatching it close. “This is mine now, you have no choice in the matter…unless you really want it back in which case I will give it…but I’m not very…actor worthy. I used to like to dress up as a kid but. I think that was just par for the course…and I don’t…even know if I’d like it. I’m not the best with memorizing lines or anything.”

Mal didn't comment when she decided to push past not having spoken much to anyone outside her family, just letting his expression soften a bit in the sort of sympathetic understanding that he usually reserved for specific sort of role. It was a good look, natural and well-practiced. It was even, just a little bit, sincere. "You can keep it, but only if you give it a really cool name," his smile brightened into a grin. "Try acting anyway, and if you don't like it, drama is a lot more than actors. It's writers and designers, people at controls handling lighting and sound. Directors coaxing out their own visions and other people's talent to embody them." They crossed a street. moving toward a small, warmly lit building, the smell of coffee distinct even outside the doors.

Jaina hummed softly and continued to hold the bat, looking thoughtful now. “Millicent. I’m going to call her Millicent, and don’t you dare say that that’s not a cool name, because it is. And she’ll be Millie for short.”
Just like she had been.
He talked it up pretty well, she had to admit…and she did enjoy writing…or. Had enjoyed writing…so maybe this would just be a different form of storytelling and…
“You know? Why the hell not. I’ll see if I can’t find some drama class for next semester, you’ve talked me into it.” Sniffing the air, Jaina’s stomach gave a loud and mighty rumble. “...I have a feeling that this place is going to be just what I need right about now too. Who knew that waking sleeping beauty would be so beneficial for me? I’ll be sure to do it again if I see you snoozing, Mal.”

"Only if it's with a kiss, Miss Charming," Mal gave a small laugh and opened the door for her.
