The good thing was that Daphne had something to focus on now, which had broken through some of the grief-stricken slump that had taken over her life for the past several months. The hard part was that the first part of this project was getting the Chaos off of her world, and that seemed close enough to impossible that she didn't know where to start with it.

All she could think of to do was to keep trying to get stronger, and to keep making more connections, so with that in mind, she'd been going out to patrol, as some of the others called it, nearly every night.

Many of the nights had been quiet, though. She hadn't seen Retzian any more. She hadn't seen many people at all, only a few smallish youma.

The Eternal aura was welcome, and when she followed it and saw familiar face and the outfit with its bold colors standing out against the black, she offered a warm smile.

"Alastor!" she called out. "I've been hoping that I'd run into you. I bought you a present."

She was grateful enough to him that she didn't think a simple thank you would be enough.

Alastor seemed like he’d been contemplating something while he was standing there, but there wasn’t anything immediately visible in front of him. He might have been distracted by the lights in the distance, or the scars in the sky, or just the shadows around them.

He heard her voice and turned to face her, blinked once and then smiled.

“Daphne! Look at you, you’ve been busy. It’s good to see you. What have you brought?”

He had manners but he couldn't help but be curious! Especially given that he hadn’t been expecting anything.

"I have been busy," she said, and she seemed proud of it, her tail swishing back and forth behind her more energetically than it had in months. "So much has happened, even in just a few weeks, but, oh! Presents first."

She was dying to tell him about all of it, but he was curious, and she wasn't going to keep him waiting.

"Here," she told him, and she summoned the present from subspace.

The pendant of the necklace was in a mandala design, inspired by the patterns she'd seen tucked into his sleeves, and on his world. She hadn't studied them enough to know if she was getting the exact right shape to match, so she'd gone for one inspired by a flower.

There had been flowers carved into the base of his candles, and those she had been able to look at for longer.

She held it out, dangling by the chain.

"Thank you for being so kind to me," she told him.

She hoped that she'd been right that he liked beautiful things.

Alastor loved beautiful things, without question. As soon as he saw the gift, his eyes lit up–as much for the gesture as for its appearance. “It’s lovely,” he praised, and once it was in his hand he drew it up a bit so he could see it better.

“It’s wonderful, thank you.”

He kept it in his hand and seemed to be appreciating the finer details before he had to force himself to look up at her. “You’re a kind person, yourself. I’ll treasure this.”

He slid it over his head and adjusted his hair but smiled warmly at her after it was settled around his neck. “I hope you’ll be able to tell me that good things have happened in these past few weeks, now.”

He liked it! That brought a smile to Daphne's face, and behind her, her tail gave a satisfied little swish. She'd picked it out carefully, since he deserved something in exchange for the candles he'd made.

"Bittersweet," she told him, because it wasn't like she could honestly say that everything was, as the Earth saying went, sunshine and rainbows. "But, it's been an improvement on just bitter."

For a long time, things had just been very, very bitter.

"There was this woman, an agent, actually?" Which seemed strange to admit, "Although she told me she was going to leave the Negaverse? But I was talking to her about how I was trying to plan a funeral, and she bought me a memorial stone for my family. I lit one of the candles for them, there. Talked to my father."

It had been bittersweet, certainly, but a look of peace crossed Daphne's face as she spoke of it, all the same.

"They deserve to be mourned. I'm realizing that."

She glanced to Alastor's face, and then to the sky.

"What I really want, though, is to be able to do it properly, in the Daphnean way."

Alastor raised a brow when Daphne mentioned an agent but he listened with an open mind and was relieved to hear that she wasn’t being dragged into anything nefarious. He didn’t trust kindness from the Negaverse and questioned their motivations, but if the effect had brought Daphne relief then he was glad for it.

She looked more peaceful than he’d seen her in a while and he was grateful for any she could find. He hoped the woman would leave the Negaverse, but it was a fleeting thought that dismissed itself as Dasphe spoke.

“I understand that,” he said after a moment. She could mourn using Earth’s rituals, or his own, or anyone’s, but it was different when they were hers.

When it was a ritual that meant something to her–and them.

“I want you to have that chance, Daphne. If there’s anything I can do, you know I’ll support you all the way. If I can help, I will. Just tell me what I can do.”

It was hard enough to have to do this in the first place–he didn’t want her to have to do any of it alone.

"I will need help," said Daphne, and then she went quiet for a longer moment, the ticking of her tail behind her slowing to something more thoughtful. This was something that she hadn't talked about at all yet with another living person, just ghosts and memories.

"I'm not going to be able to do anything about that with the Chaos the way it is. I have to stop it first." She looked over at him, her icy eyes bright. "And, I will stop it."

Which was all good in theory, but the moment of determination only lasted so long. Daphne's shoulders lowered somewhat. Her tail stilled, and she looked over to the side, back to being an overwhelmed teenager.

"I don't even know where to start with that, though," she admitted.

Alastor looked at her for only a second before a soft smile grew on his face. He wasn’t worried about her; she sounded determined. She had that fight in her, even if the reality of it was a bit daunting. When her shoulders slumped, he reached out a hand to rest atop one.

“Small steps,” he encouraged. “You should start by trying to figure out if you can pinpoint where the Chaos in. See what it’s infected. Go with backup. I know Soleiyu will help you, he made some radar thing that helped pick up concentrated points on my word. He might be able to do something for you. Once you know where it is, you can start figuring out how to fight it. What it’s weak against, how to strike it. It’ll feel more daunting until you get started, but then every step after that shrinks things down into something more manageable. I promise. Getting information will help you make a plan, so that’s what you should start with. You don’t have to rush into things–be safe. Be prepared. You’ve got this, I know you can do it.”

"The radars," said Daphne quietly, her eyes flicking to the ground while her pale cheeks flushed a few shades of pink. She remembered those. She remembered how it had started screaming at her while she'd been clinging to the ghost of her father.

She remembered throwing it against the wall with all her strength and finding the cracked shell of it afterwards.

"I might have destroyed one of those," she said, still not looking up.

"That night, everyone else was being so heroic. I-" she hesitated. "I gave in. I didn't fight. It showed me my father, and I stayed with him, and even after the illusions were destroyed, I was going to bring the Chaos crystal here so that I could make it look like him again. Soleiyu had to stop me."

She breathed.

"I can get technology. I can get allies, but I have to make sure that I'm strong enough, too."

Though Alastor could not be certain of what Daphne was thinking, he didn't miss the way her cheeks colored. It made him tilt his head just slightly, like looking at her from another angle might answer some of his questions.

He couldn't say that he minded if she destroyed one; he wasn't much of a fan of technology, despite all of its perks. It was a bit more complicated than he wanted to admit. Digital screens and chips just weren't the same as something physical. He liked what he could touch--gears and mechanisms and pieces.

Like people, he liked the problems he could see to solve. It was always easier than the problems hidden away in some unseen field.

Daphne had chosen to share something she could have otherwise kept hidden, buried deep. So, Alastor listened.

"You aren't wrong for being tempted by it. I don't think it makes you weak. I think it is a testament for how deeply you care about those that you've lost, though. They must have been lucky to have your love. I am sorry for your loss. I had a long time to grieve, so perhaps I was more resilient. But if I hadn't met Michael, or anyone else? ...I was already living in a delusion. It was the only thing that kept me going. If I had been on my own and it had shown me Percy..."

He shrugged. "Even when I knew it was fake, it was still so good at impersonating him. I hope you don't carry guilt in your heart for what happened on Alastor. I'm sorry the Chaos put you through that. I am glad Soleiyu was there to help you. If you need technology, I know he can help you better than I could, but if you need allies, count me among them. And if you want to practice with me to see if we can't get your strength up, I'll be here for that, too. I want to see you succeed, Daphne. I know you will."

Daphne tensed slightly when he said that he hoped she wasn't guilty, her tail stopping mid-swish to stay stiff and perfectly still behind her. "Of course I'm guilty," she said, still sounding very annoyed at herself about the whole thing. "I could have messed everything up for you because I was being selfish. It's not an excuse that there was Chaos around. There's going to be Chaos around. I have to learn to deal with it if I'm going to be helpful to myself or anyone else instead of being in the way."

Since her graveside meditation, and her decision to do whatever she could for her world and her loved ones, this was something that had been on her mind.

"I might take you up sometime on the offer for training, though. Do you know how to fight?"

Given the rumors she'd heard about the world of Alastor, it seemed a safe bet.

"My training's all in diplomacy and politics, but I think that's only going to get me so far in this day and age, and anyway," she rolled her shoulders back. "I like to stay active."

She'd been trying, and that had gotten her to Super, but clearly she needed more.

The question seemed to surprise Alastor, and–earnestly–he almost laughed. It wasn’t that the question itself was humorous, or that he thought she was silly for asking, it was that he couldn’t remember the last time anyone had asked if he could fight. It was such a novel concept, such an interesting question.

It had taken him aback, but he was pleased all the same. And, happy to help when he could.

“Yes,” he answered, and allowed a smile to twitch into place, “I know a bit about fighting. I’d be happy to impart what I can.”

He didn’t say it, he wasn’t sure if he had the right to, but he was proud of her. She seemed like she was taking in the bigger picture of things, and she was working towards a greater goal. On Earth, things were so different from Alastor. He could only imagine the same of Daphne.

“I’ve had a lot of training, myself. And I think I must be pretty good when it comes to fighting, it’s kept me alive for this long. I’ve never really lost a fight, either.” And he was proud of that, too, but it was just Alastorian nature. He couldn’t really be ashamed of the competitive nature he’d grown up in, especially when he still had bragging rights. “We can spar sometime. It’s a good way to stay active. And I can teach you some of the basics I work off of, and we can go from there if you want to learn more?”

Daphne's catlike eyes widened, just slightly, the pupils looking slightly bigger as her lips twitched thoughtfully. "You've never lost a fight?" she asked.

He'd been alive for a thousand years, awake for all of it, and he'd never lost once. It was impressive, and Daphne couldn't take it as anything other than a challenge. She had the biggest smile on her face that Alastor had probably seen from her yet as she said, "Then I'm going to have to train very hard to beat you."

Just as seriously, she added, "I took one class on the very basics, something about community self defense? So we would be able to skip that, but anything more advanced you have to pay for."

While dealing with everything, it had been tempting at times to give up on life, which meant Daphne hadn't bothered trying to wrap her head around Earth's awful capitalistic system, or getting a job. That was something else she was probably going to have to do soon.

"That sounds good, though. Next time we can spar."

Devyn had to work very hard not to let himself bask in his successes, but he saw that spark in her eye. He liked it. The corner of his lip twitched, because he appreciated a challenge. He liked that she wanted to see herself as one.

He nodded. “All right. Then, it’s a plan. Make sure you get a good warm up in before we meet up. If you know the basics already, good. That’ll make this easier.”

He paused. “Well. For you to learn. You’ll have to put in a lot of work to beat me. But you’ve got a good attitude, so there’s hope for you.”

But then, he always had hope for her. He believed in her.

For most things. He wasn’t planning on losing to her, but he’d give her a chance.

With effort, Daphne managed to internalize the eye roll at the thought that she wouldn't know how to warm up or take care of herself. She cold go for a run before they sparred. That should do it.

"I'll be ready," she told him. Maybe she could look up some tricks on the Internet in the meantime, see if she could skip some of the easiest lessons. He had a thousand years on her, so she was going to have to be smart about it.

"For now I should probably get going, but I'll text you when I'm free, okay?" she said.

She was turning to leave, but she turned back just long enough to say, "And thanks again. For everything."
