Variel 1 It was a bright sunny day in Matori with the gentle trade winds marching along and making the weather most agreeable despite the very real heat that the sun carried. She loved Matori. It had sand like Oba but also some of the lushest vegetation and a great view of the sea at any convienient moment. It filled her heart with joy to be here with her family. Her pack. Her everything.
Even her brother was kicking around here somewhere with Kynin. And as they had all been anticipating her janarim had fathered this years batch of Janarim eggs to improve the bloodline as he was only so happy to oblige.
She was excited because it was from these clutches that she got to choose two janarim for herself as stud fee and one or two of Viltre's and Ein's choices, should they wish to take a baby as well. They may even use Xar the following year should his genetics prove fruitful.

They'd the three of them been welcomed with open arms. Two familiar faces and one to whom they owed a clanmate. Even better the quiet understanding that they were marked by the resident healer. The janarim had been accepted and stabled in short order while arrangements were made and deals haggled out. Ninaleth did love her a good haggling. The yellow-clad wolf twin hadn't stuck around once the time came for laying; there was work to be done.
Einsol was still negotiating with one of the female janarim to get access to her eggs. This earthling's was a trusted face and scent, and she did have tasty bits in her basket, but she wasn't her siblings. Thal and Ushi were busy with a particularly grouchy mother, and Kiyelt had been required to wrassle Xarthin back into his own pen. Ein's advantage here was not her natural talent with beasts, but sheer patience. This was a new mother, and especially nervous of her first laying. She could outwait this war-lizard, going step by step closer, keeping still when the steps weren't feasible. All she had to do was sit down next to the clutch for a while. The mother would remember that she hadn't harmed her eggs after that.

Viltre, once introductions were raised, had been taking the chance to look around, see everything. The farm he remembered from visits to Sorin had been more agriculturlly focused, and thus he'd expected fields, not the small garden. He knew this had been a ranch, but being a city boy through and through, the differences between ranch and farm had seemed minor at best. Their stay was proving him wrong most every time the thief turned around.
It didn't help that there was always at least one child, teen or younger clanmate keeping an eye on him. Not from distrust so much as security. They likely thought themselves discreet about it, which would be true enough for anyone else. Young Kavensei, however, felt the eyes, heard their movements, felt the placid caution. It felt like being surrounded by people that thought walking on tiptoe was the way to avoid attention. Excellent hunters, many of them, he was sure. But few details escaped his attention.
Slender and tall, he seemed to spring up behind Variel like bamboo. She'd been leaning on the post of one of the pens, watching some of the younger creatures play with a smile on her face. "Anyone winning?"

She grinned and pointed, "That one there." She pointed at a new pupling that had just stumbled from a shell. "They are freshly hatching and that one seems to think that his clutchmates shell fragments make for great amusement, not so for the disgruntled inhabitant of said shell. They are so freaking adorable, look! The pattern looks just like Xarthin except with a royal blue base. Gah these are going to be such pretty babies!"
This was one of the most exciting things she had ever been a part of. She reached for Viltre's hand and held the long elegant scribes' hand in her own. It felt right there, larger than hers and cozy warm in the Matori heat. She pecked him sweetly on the cheek.
"When are we going to have hatchlings love? Aunty Ein looks like she could use another small brood to lord over for chores and good behaviour." She winked at her other mate. She adored Ein's solid, dependable company, forthright manner and blessed healing hands. As well as the fire and passion which were all but branded by the wolfess. Poor Vil, having two strongly totemed ladies around. Their bloodlines would run thick at least. Good healthy kids if she ever got her dang wish. How many stars could one stare at despondantly until something acutally happened.

It had taken a little time, an hour, half again an hour, to get close enough to sit down. The young war-lizard was still grousing at her earthling, but she was also gnawing at a substantial chunk of hard, salted meat. Though the grumbling equivalent sounded fairly savage, the fanged maw paused to open by the earthling's head and lick at the softer cheek. Einsol had been a little girl herself when this one hatched, and was a known factor. It'd just been nerves, was all. Not unjustly! Janarim males could get single-minded enough to step on their own clutch if not driven off. As intelligent as Xarthin was, these things could happen.
True, the healer had to sit around for a while, but it couldn't be called boring. She had plenty to do! She could keep the eggs warm with her touch and gift, watch the weather, make faces at Variel once she arrived... There she is. Right on time. This batch would take a little more incubation, but one of the others had already begun breaking open their shells. As they were somewhat obliged to look after themselves in the wake of careless feet, Janarim pups were up and moving within minutes of hatching. Normally, anyhow.
One, egg shattered by an enthusiastic clutchmate following in the finest traditions of his careless forebears, had broken him out a few minutes early. She patted their mother on the snoot, and got up, leaving her basket there. It had her scent and would do for a little while. Dark Einsol marched over to the pups, tossing a bit of eggshell to get Variel's 'winner to leave off, and began checking over his lateblooming sibling...

The graceful thief put a thoughtful turn to his mask. By now, she knew it wasn't his face, his own expressions being subtle. He kept the behavioral veil on in public, mostly under force of long habit. Even amongst friends and family, as Viltre was here, it was a comfort to him. This was no token of distrust for his hosts, only the mark of one who'd traded in the information game too long. Never absolutely sure who's watching. And what friends don't know, they can't accidentally give away. "Do they all survive the hatching, if they're that... friendly, right from the start?"
"In a bit under a year, I suppose. The wait's going to be a bit inexact, especially with all our running around." Though Variel seemed to have the baby itch, her mates seemed in no particular hurry. Ein for her solid priorities, wanting a home of her own first. Kavensei perhaps for his own misgivings about parenthood. It wouldn’t have been the first time he'd been wrong about his own preferences. Wouldn't lie to his mate, though. That was a business agreement, and nobody had ever seen him break those. ...He did have a broader idea of the truth than most, tho'.

"Is that so? Can you really predict it that closely?" She eyed him suspiciously. Did her mate have some uncanny foresight ability that she didn't previously know about?
She had noticed a few changes in her mother when she was pregnant with the twins but she had already been out of the house and working so visits had been somewhat sporadic.
She enjoyed watching Einsol work with the young critters, the girl had such a knack with them. It was a joy that they shared.
"Xarthin still petulant I see. They are such crazy beasts during the breeding season."

As soon as hands found the slimy little thing, it began to wriggle about. Ein stepped to one side, being sure that the first thing it saw when its eyes opened... Now! ...was its mother. They were a bit smarter than birds; imprinting took more time for janarim than their avian guests, who could automatically assume the first thing they saw was their mother. Still, better not to take that chance. Reptiles and birds weren't too far apart, after all. Or so her more professional kin had told her. It was even important for people, or so her master had said. As her teacher was a midwife in her main business, Einsol took her elder at her word.
Viltre had snuck up to their mate's position by the time the blue woman had a chance to look up. They'd filled their new lover in on the blood feud between thr scribe and his stepmother, and it had sounded prudent to tke steps. Her parents had set their brood to keeping eyes on his person at all times. ...Every so often, they lost him. Even the triplets, who between them had the biggest brain in the clan, had lost him. They lost him in their own den, the place they knew best. Another point for him, in Einsol's book. He'd have made a good hunter, had someone reasonable got to him before that Merle woman. For now, the healer tended her hatchling pup, drying the slime with a mage-warmth and checking his paws first...

"Closely isn't a word I'd use when the margin for error is a month. But yes. The maths are fairly consistent. Going to need to be a bit better about sketching out plans, going forward. Risks to calculate and all that." Contrary to the webs of influence involved in preparation, Viltre preferred secrecy and simplicity in a scheme's execution. Less moving parts to something meant less bits to foul up at the first run of trouble. He had no doubt Variel would insist on personal involvement in any attempt to make Elaxi's thieves pay. If more delicate matters got too far along by that point, things might well become complicated. And complications, while unavoidable, were to be minimized where possible.
While his thoughts whirled behind them, green eyes stared out over the field, watching more and more pups scramble their first steps in the sand. One or two had begun to circle their third sibling, and by extension the yellow-dressed woman holding them. The clutch weren't old enough to do more than squeak, and tended to startle each other when another made noise. Rather foiled any clumsy stalking. "Get the impression she'd prefer 'Mama Einsol', if that's alright. Been 'Auntie' most of her life, hasn't she?" She wouldn't say anything, he thought, just tell herself to stop being silly and wait. Sounds oddly familiar...

She gave him major side eye for a moment. He was brushing up against something that should not be taken lightly. "You seem like it has already happened? Am I not aware of something I should know?"
...Mama Einsol.... She knew that Ein had been taking the herb so the only way she could become a mom was if she herself (Variel) were...
Her eyes widened but were still suspicious, he may be pulling her leg, not normal but probably not unheard of behaviour for her scribe.
More eggs hatched. It was a busy day.

Warmer-than-natural hands soon had the slime dried off this pup. To the newborn reptile, they were the same as the hot sand around the shell. It (or rather, she) stopped trying to escape once the eyes opened. No more slime meant the lids came unstuck, and the tiny mind had a whole lot of distractions all at once. Einsol let her go at this point, as no damage or infirmity had presented itself. The pup scrambled off like a shot, making a beeline for her sibling and bowling him over. With a new playmate, he soon forgot all about eggshells and got down to the important business of running over and being run over by his clutchmates.
With this clutch up and scampering around, she got up, brushing dried fluids off of her yellow liene. A few dozen paces brought her back to the new mother, picking up her basket again. A slightly lighter basket. A look inside saw another large chunk of salt meat missing. Under the healer's patient yellow gaze, even the janarim had the sense to look a little ashamed. When she glanced back to her mates, the hybrid girl couldn't help but smile a bit. They were bickering again. Wasn't quite an argument and it wasn't banter. Wonder what she's on about?

With his mask on, everything was to be taken lightly. Very few subjects warranted an exception. It was part of what made him seem harmless. "Yes. I reckoned it better to wait, let you find out on your own." She'd surely grown used to the idea of Viltre's knowing one more thing than most everyone else. That, of course, still applied to her. Besides, he'd reasoned, she hadn't asked him whether or not she was with child before, only mooned about for them. Meant the surprise was intact. Surprises were always more fun, right?
Young Kavensei's willowy frame slipped around from behind, propping up his torso on folded forearms to watch the hatching. In part, this helped to avoid an elbow to the gut or ribs, but mostly it made looking at his fellow redhead easier. "Is it so surprising? We've been a bit closer than friendly for some while now. Tends to happen."

Variel opened her mouth and then closed it. She took a deep breath and watched the hatchlings for a moment to gather her thoughts which had gone the way of brain squirrels off in every direction at once.
She turned to Vil opened her mouth...then closed it and turned back to the hatchlings.
"Er, next time you er...notice that I'm pregnant, you can tell me."
"But for comfirmations sake, Einsol!" She called their other mate over, when she had a moment with the clutch between hatchings.
"Er, how would I know if I were...pregnant?"

The young healer stood again, leaving her basket nearby once more. At no particular speed, she strode acoss the field, occasionally weaving around some fresh-hatched racers. She stopped right at the fenceline, leaning forward and pecking both on the mouth, one after the other. The bright smile Einsol wore faltered into surprise as Variel put forth the question. "Your folk didn't tell ya somethin' this useful? Right, then. Better you know it 'fore the next time comes 'round.
There's a few could mean it. Your cycle bein' late, some spots in your lowerwear, fatigue, maybe quick-shiftin' feslings... There's more, but I ain't been around you all that long a span. Lot more that y'just kinda notice, growin' up around here." That her lover was showing pregnancy signs didn't seem to surprise their host. Then again, she wasn't herself a sobering influence after dusk. For dark-haired Einsol, it was a chance to do something with all the pesky urges that'd been getting in the way since adolescence. Behaving herself 'til now had built up an appetite, in a manner of speaking. In another, more accurate manner of speaking, one mate was trying for cubs and the other was okay with it, so the Matoran girl saw no reason not to encourage the pair.
One callused hand reached up to cup the Oban's cheek, thumb stroking at the cheekbone. Einsol decided another kiss was necessary, and gave a longer, softer one than her greeting. "Y'didn't know? Could've said day before yesterday. Y'got a smaller clan, it's okay not to know this stuff at first."

He'd misstepped. His father's attitude there was not something to mimic, but this hadn't worked either. Should have answered more delicately, or else less flippantly. Course correction was required. The peck gave another moments pause as dark blue lips found his. Einsol's abrupt manner had a way of blindsiding as effectively as going unnoticed did. When stealth is impossible, try boldness. An old lesson he'd let fall by the wayside, now and then. "...Must admit, noticed automatically. Didn't consider you might not know 'til a day or two ago. Big family, you learn what to look for when a new sibling is on the way.
Sorry. Only meant to tease." The slim hand found hers, squeezing a bit. Einsol didn't need to stare at him. Even Viltre had learned some version of shame.
