Nighttime was the right time for computer work. The wee small hours of the night, post-midnight but pre-dawn, were where Yukio spent much of his productive time both making a living and making mischief. Some of his best, most successful coding gigs were done at night; it was also when he cut loose and hacked his way into various companies, organizations, and databases. He rarely, if ever, stole anything – he wasn't one of those kinds of hackers who launch ransomware attacks or steal personal identities. Yukio was the kind of hacker who found the challenge of getting past a computer system's security the main enjoyment of hacking. And he hadn't found a system or network yet that he couldn't break into. Sure, there had to be some he couldn't crack, and he knew this, but he didn't care.

He sat in ugly pajama pants on a cushion on the floor of his flat, his bare back resting against the kotatsu in the middle of the living room, black-tipped fingers flying over the keyboard of his working computer. A furry hat with long floppy bunny ears – his preferred "coding hat" – hid most of his long blue hair as he worked, and the large liquid-cooled tower of his working setup whirred softly in the stillness of the apartment. Yukio's head, however, was anything but quiet. This was a hacking night, and his mind was filled with code.

Part of the fun of hacking was sharing one's victories with other hackers, and to that end Yukio had Discord open on his second monitor, lurking on a private server for a group of hackers he knew. He'd never met any of them in person, mainly because he 1) didn't know where they were in the world and 2) wanted to preserve the anonymity that made this all so appealing. Nobody used their real names, just hacker nicknames; his, of course, was Buster, same as his DJ handle.

Yukio kept half an eye on his Discord app as he worked, tiptoeing through a government contractor site for the lulz. He was half-following the conversation going on in #general when he saw a familiar handle pop online, and he switched gears to the chat app and launched a DM.

hey I whaddup, how is life treating you this fine evening?

Ian had been around a long time, too long it felt like at times, but he'd grown up on a computer practically and so he knew his way around a system. It had started off as a need to fix his own computer, couldn't afford to have someone else do it for him, and it had gone from there. He'd lost himself in his computer and the world beyond the screen...where people didn't know him and didn't care so much about if he was on any sports teams, if he was popular, or anything like that. He could be himself from a distance, keep whatever secrets he needed to.

He'd also gotten to protest things, fight for things, in his own way without actually going out into public and speakign his mind. He did not like the idea of going otu to an actual protest or making himself well known - it wasn't his thing.

So he'd met other people online, many like himself, and as the internet evolved so did he. It was no long aim and message boards and tucked away corners of the internet. Now it was discord and voice chatting, so names now had voices to go with them, and he liked it a bit more as it made understanding what a person meant so much better. It wasn't so easy to understand when someone was being sarcastic, or serious, when all you had to go by was text. This was easier and he could handle this.

Tonight as he sat down on the floor of his bedroom, his computer coming to life as it woke up, he signed into discord and popped into the group chat he tended to frequent. He was already figuring on what else he might do tonight...did he want to hack or game or something else? As he was thinking he heard a distinct ping and went to open the private message.

Of course with his name being Ian there wasn't any shorter you could go with it, not really, and he'd never been given a nickname by anyone so I had been what he'd gone with for a handle on discord. It was lacking in creativity, he knew it, but he also didn't care.

Typing out a responce he hit send.

Not too bad, busy as usual but not bad, easy enough job. I thought I'd hop on tonight even if it is late as ******** least it was late for him, he never knew about anyone else really. Some people in the group you knew what country, maybe what state, they were from but not everyone divulged that information - himself included. He'd simply never seen the point as he doubted he'd ever meet anyone from the group. Although....

Anyword from Kiki or Rael since they were going to meet at that con this past weekend? I haven't seen either on.

Those two had been close for years, even he'd noticed the dancing they were doing, but they'd never met till this past weekened. Kiki had mentioned going to a con and when she'd mentioned what con Rael had mentioned it was only a state away from himself - he could drive there and meet up and enjoy the con together. She had, of course, agreed. They were disgustingly into each other, though others he was certain would consider it cute.

Yukio laughed softly at the response. He'd been watching the tango between Kiki and Rael too – most of the server had been – and it was pretty clear they were crazy into each other. Good on them for finally meeting up.

I haven't seen either of them at all. maybe they had too much fun this weekend at the con

He sent the message and sighed. Maybe he'd find that kind of relationship someday. He'd thought he had it once, til she went off with another DJ and broke his heart. Then he thought of Abbey… he really liked her a lot, and he thought she liked him too. At least they were good friends. She was so much fun…

Shaking his head to focus, he typed another message to I.

it's never too late for hacking, my friend. gotta catch them when they're sleeping, right?

Choking on the drink he'd just taken asip from, cherry flavored water, the green eyed male couldn't help but laugh at that before responding.

Likely they didn't leave someones hotel room, I doubt they even enjoyed the con.

With how those two had been dancing around the subject, for over two years now, it wouldn't be a surprise to him really. It was honestly a surprise neither knew where they other lived till now, he had been certain they'd talkedi n private and told each other long before now.

At least we won't have to suffer watching them blindly dancing about eacch other, and all the hint dropping and teasing.

Any time those two were in a chat the inuendo, double speak, and such was heavy in the air. You never knew when one of them might throw something out there which had a second meaning, which sent a persons mind right into a gutter. Now that they could finally get that out of their systems he was hoping they'd not have to suffer it so much, he was hoping of course.

One day he might find a relationship but he swore he could never be like them...but the idea of a relationship was rather appealing, though he'd never speak about that aloud. He already felt like a third wheel a lot of the time where he lived. He did not need anyone knowing he wouldn't mind finding someone...nope. He did not want the looks or pity or anything else.

True, though getting them during the day is more of a test

It really was a test either way, to be fair, it was all about the skill of both sides though.

Anyone you wanna point me at and see how far I can get?

He questioned the other, looking for an idea, even while he pulled up something to watch on his other computer screen. He knew he'd manage to get through whatever he was set against, even if it took some time, he liked a challenge and was hoping for one tonight.

Now they were getting to the meat of the night's activities. Yukio cracked his knuckles, adjusted his bunny hat, and replied.

good point, I will have to try this hack i'm on during the day, cuz right now I'm in the belly of their back end lul

Yukio thought a moment, and hopped to the hacked contractor's contacts to see if he could find anything interesting for I to try and get into. This site had been no challenge at all, but maybe… Ah, there was a likely target.

in a government contractor site rn following connections. there's one called omega industrial. wanna try your hand at them?

He almost wanted to ask I to share his screen – he didn't know much about the other hacker, only that they had much more experience under their belt than he had. Not that he was any slouch himself, but he could always learn something…

It was, in his opinion, always good to try day and night, see if there was a difference between the two. Was there someone in an office, during the day, watching things which might catch them or activly try and stop them? It was all things to think about and things to try, sometimes there was a difference but typically not. It never hurt to try though.

I find most of the time there is no difference, but sometimes there is.

And when he got the answerr from the other, a target, he nodded to himself and slipped on his headset and switched over voice chat with the other. He found it easier to talk aloud to someone while his fingers did some work on something else.

"Sounds like an interesting target, I wonder what they do." He would of couse find out, that was the whole point of this, as he put in the call to the other to see if he'd answer. At least it would be nice to have someone to talk to while he worked.

On the other screen he had some sort of asmr playing out, something calming so he could focus on things. Sometimes he turned on music, something loud and heavy, but that was typically when gaming. When he hacked he liked a bit more peace so he could work and focus on what he was reading and taking in. He didn't want to make a mistake...the whole point was not being caught. To get in and get out without anyone knowing. He wasn't after data and things, though sometimes he did save information for himself. He wasn't the sort to sell or share information but he did like to know things....and part of that was finding information and knowledge. Typically it was reserved for books and that sort od thing but not always....

Seeing I switch to voice chat, Yukio did the same, moving floppy bunny ears out of the way to accommodate his headset. "Yeah, I have no clue," he replied, lowering the mic closer to his mouth. "I found them in the contacts in Outlook of all places – took one look at that name and decided they were incredibly hack-worthy based on that alone."

He went back into his hack and started erasing his trail, carefully picking up any bread crumbs he may have left going through the contractor's servers and databases. The goal was to get in and get out without getting caught AND without leaving a trace – that's where the real challenge was. Those hackers who stole peoples' personal information used brute force and always left some signs of their presence behind, but the most he ever left was the occasional calling card, just to let the IT team know they had an exploitable lapse in security. Doing them something of a favor, if he was being honest with himself. Yeah, that was it.

"You'll have to let me know what you find. I'm dying of curiosity now." Finishing up, he backed out and scrubbed the site's address from his history. No sense leaving any evidence on his own system. He thought for a moment, trying to figure out what to do next, then decided to visit a favorite target of his: the Destiny City University databases. Maybe that would be a solution to his lying-to-his-parents problem: hack his own information into the system to fake a graduation.

"Is that how you find every target of yours?" Ian questioned while he settled into his chair, getting comfortable, he took a moment to adjust his hoodie and pull the hood up a bit so it covered the top of his headset and left just his face visible.

"If you want I'll just screen share if you wanna see what I find." Something he normally owuldn't do, showing someone how he worked, but he didn't mind with the few friends he had here - he trusted them. He was certain that if they were turn him in they'd have done it already, they had more than enough on him. They didn't need to see him do the work to know what he did, he talked about it enough times, he'd be behind bars by now if anyone in this little group was like that.

"Did you find anything interesting in your digging about?" Wondering for a moment what the other might have found. It wasn't often he shared what he found, it normally wasn't worth it, but he was curious here since he'd be going in after a contractor to who the other had just hacked into.

"Not always – sometimes I do, if they're like a government agency. I'm really careful around those guys. Their contractors though are fair game." Yukio knew that if one of this little cadre of hackers went down, they all would, so picking and choosing targets was done carefully. Everyone here knew he liked to get into government systems, considering that sort of target to be great sport; but he was exceedingly careful not to leave a trace.

"Screen sharing would be great," he nodded at his monitor. This should hopefully be good, finding out what this Omega Industrial was about. "No, there wasn't anything interesting. The usual legal things, foreign diplomatic correspondence, that sort of thing. You know, typical government bullshittery."

Sleet Tempest Snape
PostPosted: Sun Feb 26, 2023 10:52 pm

"Yeah, I know." The whole little group knew that Buster liked going for government agencies, it was honestly a bit amusing. He had gone for them as well, he'd done a lot in his time, but he liked to go into other things as well. He'd worked on projects with other groups of hackers in the past but that was just that - the past. He did a lot of thing son his own now just for fun and to see what was going on behind the scenes, if people were stupid enough to put things into computers which he could get into. He liked the idea of knowing what was really going on, what you didn't see on the news, as it was nice to know what was going to happen before it did...or as it happened. A nice heads up sort to speak.

"I thought you might like that." Ian said while pressing the button to screen share as he set to work, it wouldn't be too hard he figured but who knows. Maybe there would be some sort of traps for him to deal with. It could be interesting, he sort of hoped it would be.

"Let's hope I can get this done soon, it's nearly two in the morning." And he had work in the morning. Never mind he'd just given way which part of the world he lived in, that could easily be found out, he didn't think too much of it. He could be narrowed down to what? One time zone...that left a lot to work with really. He wasn't too worried about being found, he doubted anyone was interested in him enough to want to know where he lived. Why would anyone in the group wanna know? It wasn't like Kiki and Rael where they had a thing for each other. He wasn't so lucky...or maybe unlucky, considering how mushy those two were.

Settling back to watch I work, Yukio popped open his long-forgotten bottle of Ramune and took a sip. He knew the other had been around awhile – probably a bit older than he was, since he'd started hacking when he was around 17, so about five years now. Definitely more experienced, at least. His friend could get into sites and systems that Yukio could only dream of cracking. Watching I was like a master class in getting in, getting out, and not getting caught.

"Should be a piece of cake for a coder like you," he said with the trace of a smile in his voice. "These government contractors usually are." He figured it would be a challenge for I, but not a big one, unless they'd set up traps and whatnot to catch hackers trying to break in. Of course, that was all dependent on what they were trying to hide, if anything. Yukio secretly hoped that they were working on something super fun. Well, fun to a hacker.

Glancing at his watch, he saw that it was indeed nearly two. That would put I somewhere in this timezone, he thought idly. Wonder if his companion for the evening was local…

"Come on, it's early yet," he teased. "I have at least a couple good hours in me. Maybe more." Of course, he didn't have to work to a set schedule – he did his non-hacking work whenever he felt like it. His clients didn't care, as long as it was done right. And Yukio always got it right. Still, having I on a schedule meant that he still had time to get into DCU's system and find out what would be needed for graduation. With luck, it would be easy for him to craft a believable curriculum that would allow him to fake a diploma. It wasn't like he was working on his post-grad or anything; a bachelor's in CompSci should be easy to do.

"You'd think but I've still found some I can't manage." Some took time while others he couldn't get into, not on his own. If he tried with others he knew it would be possible - anything was possible as far as he figured it. It was just a matter of time and who was involved. He also wasn't going for brute force to get in, which he could if he really wanted, he was trying not to be noticed as that was the game really...that was the test.

"Normally they are pretty easy though." Though there could be some trip ups and such which made it fun, the unexpected stuff, especially when he had to work it out as he went.

"Ah, yes but you don't work a normal job - I do. I got hired by a friend to handle the security at his clinic." Which meant that places computers, their whole system, was locked up like fort knox considering his hobby of hacking he knew how people got in and he'd made sure no one could do that. The place was safe, he'd made sure of that. He could get in without having to hack so he didn't need a backdoor...though most would have one he'd decided not to. He didn't want someone else to find it and use it as well.

"It was nice that the job fell into my lap, since I'd been doing odd jobs before that." And the money was better with a steady job like he now had, he liked it more. It paid for things he wanted and needed.

"What are you working on getting into? Assuming you pulled out on the last place." He questioend while his fingers flew over his keys, the sound audible over his headset. He couldn't really help it...his keyboard wasn't the quietest thing.

"It's true, my job is anything but normal," Yukio smirked, watching on his monitor as I carefully lock-picked his way into Omega Industrial's computer. systems Truly a master class in hackery. "I try to keep fairly normal hours so I can talk to my clients about their scope for the projects I work on, and show them what I've done so far, but yeah, most of my actual coding gets done at night." The little group of hackers knew he was a DJ as well, and he was sure they wondered on the regular how he managed to get everything done at night – plus patrol as Spei, Moon Squire, which of course they didn't know about. It was getting a bit tight scheduling-wise, but that was why he used a scheduling app to keep track of what needed doing when.

"Yeah, it was really nice you got that job. Doing odd jobs can be so stressful." As he well knew. Luckily he had enough regular client work now and a reputation as a good, fast, reliable programmer that he didn't have to sweat things overmuch. And big companies didn't usually credit the contractors, which kept his work out of the eyes of his systems-analyst dad.

Yukio shrugged, even though he knew I couldn't see him. "Some university. Gonna maybe change a few grades if I get in that far. Which should be easy." It wasn't exactly a lie, either – he just didn't state which university he was hacking. "I got out of that other place like a knife out of a perfectly-done cake. Not a trace left behind."

PostPosted: Mon Feb 27, 2023 11:23 am

"I have the usual nine to five so as regular as it can be, though sometimes a bit later." Since it was a clinic and such it did sometimes get some odd hours. But the lunch break was nice, he could check other things during that time. He didn't do any hacking though, not when he was working, he couldn't afford to have anything get back to his normal job.

"Odd jobs are stressful because you don't when they'll come and you're at the mercy of the person as far as pay goes...at least to a point." And he didn't like that one bit. He didn't like feeling like he was getting to live here free so he tried to chip in as much as he could as well as get his own things. Maybe one day he'd move out on his own but he certainly didn't feel like being that alone.

He didn't like people much, being rather introverted, but he liked to know people were around and hear them even if he didn't interact with them. It was still nice to have them around. It was also nice because he didn't have to worry about so many things...about keeping a roof over his head and such. But he might take the dive one of these days...he was getting older, as everyone was, and he did feel like a third wheel at times. Everyone was married or engaged and had children.

"Didn't do well in classes? I don't know how you fit in everything you do. I don't think I could manage that." If he tossed in being a senshi, and actually did that, he'd certainly not manage it all. Something would fall through the gaps a bit.

"Good, that's how it should be done. It's easier said than done sometimes." Some people tried to get out too fast and slipped up and other things...some were just sloppy in general. Some people didn't care either...especially those who forced their way into a system...they didn't care so much about being caught.

"Oh, I have regular clients, and they pay me promptly, so I'm not as stressed as I could be," Yukio shrugged. He didn't mention that they paid him more than the going rate for freelance programmers because he was That Good. Between those gigs and his DJ gigs, he made more than enough to live comfortably; the monthly stipends he got from his parents paid for the flat he lived in. "You know, plus I do work as a DJ, and those gigs can pay pretty well too."

Yukio was a strange bird and he knew it: an introverted extrovert was how he described himself. He enjoyed people, enjoyed hanging out and talking with them, deeply enjoyed making them happy with his music, even enjoyed flirting to a certain extent (they had to be heckin cute for him to flirt with them). But he much preferred doing things like wandering Destiny City and taking his tea at his favorite tea shops by himself. It was easy to mistake him for an introvert, which he embraced – kept people on their toes around him.

"Oh, I don't go to school, I'm done with that s**t, you kidding? I quit DCU a long time ago." Which was true, only he didn't want to go into detail of his reasons. Too embarrassing. Caught up in his own thoughts and memories, he didn't realize he'd let it slip what uni he'd been at. "I'm going in to change some kid's grades because I can." He smirked again. Maybe it would end up being some kid who wasn't doing well in a course, maybe it'd be some slacker. He didn't care.
