Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Tendaji is a rich and diverse land filled with many different cultures and languages. While most travelers are fortunate enough to speak a common language, sometimes one might find themselves in a village where they can't communicate with the local population. How do you manage? Do you find someone to translate, or fumble along?

[ Tendaji has many different languages that the locals speak, and sometimes you might find yourself in a village or town where no one is speaking your language. Use this prompt to explore that miscommunication - maybe thinking about how hard it is to get your message across. Or connecting with a stranger who is helping you translate so you can make that purchase you need. What happens when everything is lost in translation? ]

WC - 822

Akeldama had gone in the opposite direction for her hunting trip than was her ususal. That also meant that the town she would find to sell her catch wouldn’t be the one she was used to. So when she emerged from the treeline with a bloody beast slung over one shoulder she was met with wide eyed stares and shocked expressions. Not only was she one of the giant wood dwellers but here she was decorated with blood and a dead animal in her possession. Not the best first impression for an earthling who was skittish.

She made her way toward what looked like was the main market. Of course the tall woman could feel the stares on her and while it wasn’t comfortable she had grown used to them over the years. While the larger towns and cities were somewhat used to her kind coming out of the woods more often she didn’t think this little town was. Which brought up another issue. Would they be willing to trade? Being suspicious like they are she had to wonder.

Akel sighed when she noticed everyone moving back away from her by at least three steps as she passed by. Finally she stopped and looked at a vendor that seemed to have meats on the shelf for sale.

“Would you be willing to buy this kill?” She asked.

The man only gained a confused look on his face and then glanced at the others around them as if looking for someone to save him from the whole situation. Finally he brought his attention back to the Elarian before shaking his head, the look of confusion staying on his face. The words that came out were unfamiliar to Akeldama. She didn’t remember them being spoken in the larger city.

Her head tilted to the side as her brows drew together. “I don’t understand you..” Her words trailed off.

If there was a different language spoken here that she couldn’t understand then things would be that much harder. Not to mention it would take a lot more to tell them she was no threat to them. Or at least not an active one. Her appearance certainly didn’t help her case.

So she shifted the kill on her shoulder and moved her spear to the side that had the animal, making it difficult to use. Moving her hand to help with her words she tried again. “You..” She pointed at the vendor. “Buy..” This time she rubbed her fingers together to signify coins. “This…” And she pointed at the beast she held. There wasn’t much more simple of an explanation. At least she didn’t think so.

The vendor watched, but there was fear on his face now. The general pointing to him and then to the dead beast was easy to understand. But the one in between was a bit more difficult. He once more looked side to side to see if someone else would step in or could at least understand the giant before him.

Akel waited as well. And to say she was losing her patience was an understatement.

Thankfully they were both saved from the awkward situation by someone clearing their throat and stepping up beside the seller. It was a younger woman and she seemed to be intimidated by Akeldama but willing to at least help out.

“Common tongue isn’t used here. You’re too far from the ports.” She offered as an explanation to Akel.

The Elarian nodded her head. “Could you tell him I just want to sell my kill and I’ll be on my way?”

The woman nodded her head a bit shakily but turned to the man, clearing her throat again. She spoke quickly and motioned with her hands, mostly toward Akel and her prize. It took a bit of back and forth before the man seemed to nod his head, but not after staring at the animal for a while.

Finally the woman looked back at Akel. “He was worried you were here to kill him for some reason. I explained that you only wanted to sell the beast you caught. He says he will.”

“Oh good.” Akel grabbed her spear so that she could get it out of the way. Of course that seemed to make the man tense. She paused for a second before moving to get the beast off her shoulder and set it on the table by the man. Once it was out of her hand she held it up to show she wasn’t going to hurt him.

The man used the woman as the mediator and handed her the coin to give to the Elarian. Once the transaction was complete he grabbed the beast and moved away. Akeldama nodded toward the man.

“Thank you for the assistance.” She told the woman before turning to walk back toward the treeline. She wanted to get out of this town before things got any more complicated.
