Weeks passed. Kauff didn't wreck anything. He never got so antsy that a walk wouldn't cure his unease, never got mad or cursed in front of the kids. It was easy. Maybe there had never been anything to worry about at all. Maybe. He admired a little of his handiwork as he passed, running his fingers over the former hole in the wall. It had taken three attempts to get it to look right, but you could barely tell where it had been now. With a satisfied smile that was just for himself, Kauff pulled a tall glass bottle of orange liquid out of a cupboard. It tasted of fruit that had been run through a bubble bath... only without the soap. Belrea's influence, probably.

Xariy had enjoyed these last weeks with Kauff. The casual existence they shared. There was no worries of him taking off or getting hurt. Most of her time she'd spent taking care of the kids, working on expanding rooms, handiwork she hadn't really learned before. It was a slow process, but was working out so far. Today however was different. She'd been awake for a while now, but made no move to leave their bed. Everytime she made a move her head swam and nausea overtook her. It was as if she was on a ship in the middle of a storm, every movement forcing her off balance. "I feel groooooooss," she whined, throwing her arm over face.

Kauff strolled back to their room, standing in the doorway and watching her as he took another sip of his drink. He was more of a hype man than a caretaker, but maybe now was the time to start being a little more nurturing. It was a shame that he had absolutely no idea how to proceed. He took a deep breath. Okay. He could fix this just like he'd fixed the wall. "What feels gross?" He kept his voice low as he stepped closer to the bed. "You want some water? I think we've got some of those chewy things for headaches?"

"Me. I feel gross. Not sure why but every time I move I just feel so sick. Like my insides are just trying to escape me," Xariy explained, peeling her arm away from her face to look at him. She couldn't explain why she felt the way she did. Lately she had been feeling off, but it wasn't food or lack of movement. Something was just….not right. Xariy had even considered a visit to a healer to get herself checked, but then figured it was silly to do so. "Something feels wrong."

"Hm." He knelt by her bedside and rested the backs of his fingers against her forearm. It wasn't any warmer than usual, but that didn't mean this wasn't serious. There were plenty of illnesses that didn't present with fever. Even he knew that. As if he had seen her thoughts, he asked, "I could take you to the healer? I'll carry you the whole way. Gently." Kauff smiled, though his brows tilted with worry, making him look a bit like a poscuta begging for scraps. Something else flashed through his mind, another reason she might feel sick for no reason, but the thought was quickly forced as deeply as he could bury it.

"You think it's worth it? To go? I was considering it, but didn't want to waste their time if it was something simple," she explained, covering her mouth as she sat up. Ohhhh maybe a bad idea. Another wave of nausea hit her and she did her best to force it down. Maybe a healer was a good plan after all. She rested her hands against his shoulders, wanting nothing more than to crawl into his lap and hide her face. "I feel so very useless right now. I don't like it. I had plans today, you know. Maybe taking the kids to the market."

"I do. If it's nothing, we come straight back and I find a bin for the side of the bed. But I don't want to ignore something serious." He held his breath as she rose, anticipating a shower of vomit splashing onto his face, and he sighed faintly when nothing happened. "The market will still be there tomorrow. I'll just... bribe Liyn to be on his best behavior until then." Kauff chuckled. "Are you ready? Sure you don't want any water?"

"Ready as I'll ever be," she huffed out, wrapping her arms around his neck as she prepped herself for the inevitable move from their bed. She wasn't ready for the movement completely and regretted it as soon as she was shifted, soft curses spilling from her as she pressed her face harder against his chest. Xariy worried that maybe, maybe something more serious was wrong. A horrible virus could have caused this, but there was also something else she wondered. Something that she had worried about but hadn't wanted to voice. "Kauff. You don't think….?" She whispered, not wanting to put her thoughts into words.

Kauff squeezed her closer to him as he stood, an assurance for them both. With Xariy gripping his neck so tightly, he managed to grab the light sheet from the bed and was busy cocooning her in it when she spoke. He froze. "Yes." His first attempt at speech came out as nothing more than air and he swallowed to moisten his throat. "Yes. I, um, did think." He closed his eyes as the thoughts he had pushed so deeply came speeding back up to the surface, making his stomach drop. "We weren't exactly careful."

"Mm. I suppose not. We are a bit of a reckless pair," Xariy laughed out. She was worried about a lot of things. Maybe they should have been more careful. Having a….child….was a big responsibility. She wasn't particularly scared of raising children considering she'd been raising the kids that wandered into her care. Her biggest worry was always Kauff. She thought he would be a good father, a great one really, but the concern of tying him down always resurfaced in her mind. He was staying now, wanted to stay, but would it be different if kids were involved? "If it is, uh, okay. If not. Also okay."

He nodded, the bobbing of his head going on three or four times too long for simple agreement. This was okay. It really was. There was nothing he could do to a baby that Xariy couldn't fix. And they didn't even really know what was going on here. Maybe they'd be prescribed a potion or a healer would clear things up with a simple touch and some magic words. Despite his fear, the possibility of an average illness made him a little sad. "Yeah. We'll be fine no matter what."He carried her from their room, down the hall, and out the front door, his fizzy orange drink abandoned on the bedside table. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●It took longer than usual to reach the healer, which wasn't a surprise considering how slowly he was walking. He told Xariy stories along the way, but they were fairly nonsensical tales that sometimes devolved into decently melodic humming that he hoped was soothing. When their destination came into view, he gave her another little squeeze. "We're here."

The entire time Xariy was listening to his tales she could only think about how much she did enjoy being with him. Even in this bizarre situation things would be okay with them, and that did make her smile. She almost regretted being put down by him when they arrived, and remembered that she needed to steel her nerves before entering the building. Deep breaths in and out, and then she grabbed hold of his hand and tugged him inside with her. A small bell tingled as she opened the door and a small woman stepped out from behind a counter to look them over. "Uh....I feel ill and need help," Xariy spoke awkwardly, and the woman smiled at her. "Have a seat then and we'll be with you soon."

He watched the woman for a little too long and with a little too much suspicion as he helped Xariy to sit, deliberately smoothing his face when he realized what he was doing. She wasn't trying to slight them or deny service deliberately. Preparations had to be made and other patients had to be seen. He was being ridiculous. It wasn't the first time. "That was... very concise," he said with an airy chuckle, his knee bouncing with unconscious nerves. He stilled that too. "How are you doing? Is it any better?"

"Honestly? Still feel horrid. Nervous now too. Do you think if I don't go in we can pretend I'm okay? Does that work?" She rambled off, slapping her face lightly. She let herself sink down into the seat more as she continued to slow her breathing, wondering if any of this was helping. She didn't have a whole lot of experience with what came next. Her brother had been born well after she'd left, and other than that she'd only recently started to keep around children. No one to tell her what to do next, unless she asked her mother, but that was a conversation she really did not want to have. "I'm uh....sorry for this mess."

"I mean... we could turn around and go home right now, but... we need to know. Right?" They kind of didn't, to be completely honest, but things would be a lot easier if they did. "Either we walk out of here with a cure, or... we know things. And we prepare."When she uttered her sheepish apology, Kauff just stared back, his lips nearly twitching with indecision. "You..." Amused disbelief won, and he grinned in spite of all of this, releasing a single surprised laugh from deep in his chest. "I was there. I could have stopped this. If... you're..." He sobered again, gathering both of her hands and cradling them between his. "Please don't be sorry."
