Belrea overall was an intriguing place. For Kai, it was a place to figure out and explore, with the help he'd gathered from Alek of course. Everything was shiny and new, and with that came the fact that Kai didn't really know what he was getting into half of the time. Which is how he found himself hanging around a back alley with some strange business going on. At first, Kai thought it simple enough. A potion seller with not so great real estate setting up in an out of the way area. Maybe he hoped he would get some business. Kai didn't know anything about business so he wasn't too sure how it looked, but as he drew closer to the individual it was....abnormal. But still looked really fun!
"Let's go check it out, yeah?" Kai spoke quickly to Alek, not really thinking and more doing, tugging the boy behind him without a real answer.
"Would you like some pooootions?" A rickety voice called out from the makeshift stand, long hand holding out a peculiar green substance in a bottle.

Alek's eyes were wide and almost luminous in the dim alley. He advanced at a shuffle with his shoulders up around his ears, certain that he would be stabbed or slugged at any moment. When Kai stopped, Alek bumped into him a little, his hands skittering up the hybrid's arm and gripping it a bit too tightly. This trust hadn't come consciously; he had known Kai longer by a handful of hours, so that's where his allegiance went. He did perk up at the mention of potions though. "I... I kind of would?" Alek knew the dangers of buying from disreputable sellers, but for every mysterious concoction that rendered you bald, there might be another that would do wonders for broken bodies. "What are you selling?"

Kai smiled at the nervous man, brushing his fingers against the hand on his arm in an attempt to soothe his nerves. He stepped forward more, making sure to keep pace with Alek instead of rushing head first into the situation like he would have normally. The potion seller, a spindly lightning man with large goggles making his eyes look almost bug eyed, waved them over as they approached. He smelled acrid, like too many potions had blown up in his face, and there was definitely a few patches of hair missing atop his smudged face. "Uhhhh.....what sort of potions do you have?" Kai restated, just in case the seller hadn't heard Alek before. "Yes, yes. All kinds! Ones for fixing up wounds, and ones for making good soup, also exciting mystery ones. Some for romance perhaps?" The seller grinned and swirled a lavender potion at them. "Oh oh, also some for beauty." Kai perked up at that one, leaning forward to get a closer look at the strange blue and silver mixture glittering in the bottle the seller had pointed towards. "Ohhhhhhh?" Kai drawled out, incredibly interested in anything that would make him more beautiful.

Beauty potions? That was what Kai was interested in? His striking appearance was one of the first things Alek had noticed about him. He didn't need enhancement. But Alek wasn't going to dwell on that. He wasn't at all suited to advise anyone, not even himself. "Would you like one?" he asked. "We could get that and one for healing? As long as we do some testing first, they shouldn't be dangerous." While he measured his tone to keep judgement from it when speaking to Kai, he had no problem outright suggesting that this potion seller was running a scam.

Kai nodded eagerly at Alek, gripping his sleeve and tugging him closer to the vendor. Despite the man's strange appearance, Kai was certain that the potions would work. He looked like he knew what he was talking about. Maybe? Everything was so new and strange in Belrea. "We could take them as a test. Maybe the beauty one will make my skin shinier. I have felt a bit dry recently so that would be nice. Perhaps purchase some skin products along with the potion so I can refresh myself," Kai chuckled, picking up the 'beauty' potion. "And if you want to test the healing one maybe I can pinch you or something. Then you can take it and see if it heals the pain!" He at least thought it was a solid plan.

"Okay." Alek smiled at Kai's suggestions, though it was an apprehensive one. They might have come from a questionable source, but these potions wouldn't kill the people who purchased them or the seller would be run out of town. He lowered his arms to his sides, finally relaxing his shoulders as he reached for his money pouch. Subtly, he hoped. He glanced at the purple potion for a split second before giving a more critical look to the ones they were going to buy. "How much for these two?" He rarely had a reason to spend the money he earned, so it was really no object, but he didn't want to seem too well off.

"How much? HOW MUCH?" the seller shouted, rubbing his hands together. "A silver, no 11 silver. Yes fair price. I think a good deal," the man cackled, holding his hand out to Alek for the money. Kai leaned over Alek's shoulder, watching him make a deal with the potion seller. Very official business of course. He liked watching him work, his quiet nature much different than his outgoing presence. He was also unsure how to barter with people here. It felt different than home, the trading done more in money than goods and services. "If that's too much...." he muttered softly near Alek's ear, worried that he was asking for too much.

Alek swallowed, Kai's whisper fluttering the hair near his cheek. This salesman was rather intense, and even though Alek didn't want to be taken advantage of, he had no idea how to haggle properly. "Um..." He swallowed. "Nine. Nine silver." If this guy could go from one to eleven in less than a second, nine had to still sound like a good deal.

The salesman stared Alek down, sloshing the potions around in front of their eyes. Then he thrust is free hand forward, nodding at the two of them. "Nine silver, yes," he agreed. Kai laughed softly, resting his chin on Alek's shoulder as he watched the bartering interaction go down. He was no good at this sort of thing so he was relieved to see that Alek was. He would have paid more for the potions than the eleven silver if he knew it was worth it, but maybe that was sort of the point. They didn't really know. He just hoped that the seller wouldn't lie. "You're a good trader. Maybe you could sell your own potions and do a lot of bartering," Kai said, tilting his head to look up at Alek from where he leaned against him.

He handed over the silver and reached for their potions, remaining otherwise motionless so as not to dislodge Kai. "Um...thank you," he told the potion seller. "We're going to... go now?" Alek turned slowly with the hope that he might usher them away from this alley with as little fanfare as possible. He carefully handed Kai the glittery blue and silver bottle once they were out of range. "Maybe someday I could hone my bargaining skills. For the moment I just have set fees and a mentor with an intimidating reputation. Now I'd feel better about this whole thing if you allowed me a drop of that potion first, just to make sure it's on the level, and then you can drink the rest to your heart's content." Or maybe it was meant to be rubbed on? He wasn't about to go back and ask.

Kai nodded and held the potion up to the light before handing it back to Alek. He wasn't sure what to do with it anyway, so best let the healer have a look at it first. Just in case he decided to sip it and turn green. Or maybe his lure would fall off. Perhaps taking the potion was a bad idea in general. He chewed on his lip as he leaned close again, worrying over the older boy. "Maybe sniff it? Or uh....however you know how to do it. I trust you to know what you're doing," he laughed, giving him a big thumbs up. "You can hone all your skills today."

"Good, good." Alek took the bottle back and turned it over in his shaky hands. He tried to keep his thoughts positive as he popped open the top and stuck his pinky inside, ducking his head to lick it off. Almost immediately he determined that this wasn't any sort of poison he knew, but that was about it. "It's definitely meant to be taken by mouth. And it's safe. I don't know what it will do, but it won't kill you." He smiled tentatively, putting the stopper back in the bottle and offering it to Kai. "It's all yours."

Kai swished the substance around a couple of times, staring at the pretty colors before shrugging and downing the contents. It tasted....okay? Kai stood there waiting, holding up his arm to watch for any change. Not seeing it there, he pulled his mirror from his bag and held it out to look himself over. No change that he could see there either. "Do I look beautiful now, Alek? Have you noticed any change?" he questioned, turning his attention away from himself and back to the other boy once more.

He knew this was coming from the moment the potion seller had cackled the word "beauty" and Kai had seemed interested. He knew he would have to lie about the supposed effects of some fraudulent concoction and he really wasn't that good at it. But Kai was already lovely. Would it really be a lie if Alek told him so? He busied himself with putting away his own questionable healing potion, then looked back at Kai, giving him a very serious once over. When he replied it was just as serious, but it didn't last, devolving into a hurried babble. "I don't see any change, even though you are still beautiful. B... but you mentioned skin products? We could find some of those instead? For the dryness you were talking about?"He hadn't lied in the end, but he wondered if this was worse.

Kai rubbed the back of his neck, a little disappointed by the lack of effect the potion had on him. He wanted to make himself look more exciting. More enticing, but at least Alek had said he was beautiful. It was a small bonus to the otherwise disappointing situation. And he had been honest. He greatly appreciated that. Kai leaned forward and placed a light kiss to Alek's cheek before shifting away and smiling. "Thanks for the compliment. And not lying to me. I prefer not to be," he nodded, stretching his arms over his head. "Where to next then? We have a lot to explore."
