Back Alley Potions

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Magical potions are a bit of a risk in Tendaji, believe it or not. It might be because most are used to working with natural items, or that many potions don't always have their intended effects. Some of the more dubious ones have been rumored to cause scales to grow, or blindness. So if you pass by someone in a back alley saying they have a potion to help you grow two feet taller, it's often better to look the other way.

Or is it?

What would you find if you looked over at what they had to sell? Is it really all that strange? Or maybe you'll find a fun hidden gem worth taking home.

[ What might you find someone selling if you approached a back-alley potion shop? Note: Potions that change appearance with growths are event-limited and may not be purchased/used from this prompt ]

Yejide rustled around in her pockets to try to see what she had in there and how much she could spend. She was in the market for something, but she hadn’t quite decided what yet.

She wanted to see if she could find a present for a particular somebody. She wasn’t quite sure what she would like, but she thought maybe if she saw it she would know,.

She walked through the market place, trying to read the signage and look through the goods when something caught her eye. It was a slightly faded sign, like it had been there a while, but it was pretty simple. ‘Homebrewed Goods’ with an arrow pointing into a small walkway between two clusters of trees.

Odd, but ok, she’d bite.

Hyten had only been back in Jauhar for a day before he had wanted to go and spend what he had made out on the road. When he helped his dad man the carts his dad was fair enough and paid him an hourly wage. It was chump change, but what else could he expect from a family business. He was just grateful his dad paid him anything at all.

But now he was ready to spend it. Which was probably another reason why the pay wasn’t all that great. Hyten was not frugal.

He bopped his way through the market and stopped at a peculiar sign. The two brain cells rubbed their way into a spark and he shrugged his shoulders. Cool. Home goods.

The path between the tree clusters was darker than the market proper, as if the canopy above conspired to keep this particular stretch shaded. Vines hung low, brushing her shoulders like they were trying to pull her back. She batted them away.

The sign hadn’t promised much, but something about it tugged at her curiosity. She followed the trail until it opened into a small nook lit by bioluminescent jars hanging from the branches.

A stall sat crooked against the roots of a huge tree, with shelves of mismatched bottles in all shades and shapes.

Hyten reached the alley a little after her, though he didn’t see her right away.

What he did see was the weirdest bottle he’d ever laid eyes on—it looked like it was filled with swirling stardust.

He immediately turned to the vendor, an older shifter with glimmering eyes and a crooked grin. “How much for the cosmic snowglobe juice?” he asked.

The vendor didn’t blink. “Depends on whether you’re trying to fall in love or forget a name.”

Hyten grinned. “Why not both?”

She hadn’t noticed Hyten at first. Her focus had landed on a tiny bottle the color of wildfire.

It sat in the middle of the stall, surrounded by far less vivid potions, like a centerpiece. The label was smudged but legible: Clarity.

She snorted.

It sounded like a scam, but it also sounded… tempting. She wasn’t sure if she wanted clarity or to smash the bottle on the ground, but that probably said something about her state of mind.

He barely noticed the other customer at first—just a woman standing near one of the more vivid bottles. The bottle itself was cool, sure, but the way she was squinting at the label like it had personally insulted her made him curious.

“Hey,” he said, stepping up beside her. “You think that one actually does anything, or is it gonna give you bat wings and regrets?” He gave a crooked smile, the kind that tried to charm on instinct more than intention.

She gave him a sidelong glance, slow and unimpressed.

“Depends,” she said. “Do you drink mysterious liquids from strangers often?”

Her tone was dry enough to parch moss. He looked too clean for this place. Not in clothes—his clothes were worn, serviceable—but in spirit. Like he hadn’t had to claw his way out of anything yet. She turned back to the bottle.

It wasn’t labeled clearly.

That figured.

“Well… yeah, sometimes,” Hyten admitted, scratching the back of his neck. “I mean, you never know where the good stuff is till you try a few bad ideas.” He chuckled, clearly not picking up on—or not caring about—her cool demeanor.

“You look like you know what you’re doing, though. Mind if I copy your homework?” He glanced at the bottle she was still holding.

She raised an eyebrow. “You’re either brave or stupid.”

She didn’t wait for him to answer—she wasn’t sure she wanted to hear which one.

“This stuff?” she held the bottle up to the light filtering through the jars overhead, watching the liquid inside shimmer like burning coals. “It’s called Clarity. Could mean a hundred things. Could strip your thoughts bare. Could make you hallucinate your ex for three days.” She set it down. “Either way, not for someone just trying to ‘have a good time.’”

He paused, then smiled again, this time with a touch of sheepishness. “Fair. I guess I don’t really know what I’m looking for.”

He glanced around at the shelves.

“I just… got into town yesterday. Thought I’d find something weird to bring home. Maybe make a memory. But most of this stuff looks like it wants to chew me up.” He pointed at a bottle that was audibly humming. “Like that one. That one is judging me.”
PostPosted: Fri May 30, 2025 1:28 pm

She snorted before she could stop herself. Just a short breath, but still—annoying. She didn’t know this kid, didn’t want to like his stupid commentary, and yet here she was, trying not to smirk.

“That one’s not judging you,” she said. “It’s singing. Badly. It’s one of those memory potions. Sings the last thing someone said when they were crying.”

She tilted her head.

“Vendor said he doesn’t keep it corked because the silence creeps him out more.”

Hyten blinked, staring at the bottle with a new kind of wariness.

“That is the most depressing object I’ve ever seen,” he said, reverently.

“I’m buying it.”

Then, quickly, “Kidding. I think. Maybe.” He glanced at her again, more thoughtful now. “You live here, huh? Jauhar, I mean. You’re not just browsing tourist traps like me.”
PostPosted: Fri May 30, 2025 1:30 pm

“Not from here, but close enough,” she said. “Been around a bit.” Her voice was steady, but distant.

“I’ve seen a lot of markets like this one. Some real, some fronts. All of them trying to sell you something you think you want.” She looked at him again. “You sure you’re old enough to be wandering into alley booths by yourself?”

“Mentally? Absolutely not,” he said without hesitation. “But legally, yeah. Just started figuring out the world on my own.” He rubbed his palms together and gave a small shrug. “Guess it starts here, with mysterious glowing potions and local experts who think I’m a moron.”

He grinned again, but this time it was softer. “Thanks for not letting me drink whatever that was. I’ll owe you one if I make it out of here still me.”
