Back Alley Potions

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Magical potions are a bit of a risk in Tendaji, believe it or not. It might be because most are used to working with natural items, or that many potions don't always have their intended effects. Some of the more dubious ones have been rumored to cause scales to grow, or blindness. So if you pass by someone in a back alley saying they have a potion to help you grow two feet taller, it's often better to look the other way.

Or is it?

What would you find if you looked over at what they had to sell? Is it really all that strange? Or maybe you'll find a fun hidden gem worth taking home.

[ What might you find someone selling if you approached a back-alley potion shop? Note: Potions that change appearance with growths are event-limited and may not be purchased/used from this prompt ]

Nedelle’s ears perked up when she had heard the whispering in Oba. There was someone selling special things in the market. She had heard the gossip from a gaggle of elderly women, but the word on the street was that someone was selling unique potions out of the back of their wagon a little ways outside of town. And Nedelle thought that was the perfect opportunity to get Zaeryn away for a little chat.

Zaeryn didn’t really know what it was that Nedelle was after, but he had gotten her message. She wanted to meet up and go to the market. It wasn’t incredibly unusual, but it set off enough enough flags that he was cautious. Usually when things like this happened Nedelle was planning to meddle.

Meddle in what though… Zaeryn wasn’t sure yet. He gathered his bag with his coin purse inside and let the fabric of his tent close behind him. He would find her and eventually he was sure he would get to the bottom of what was in her mind one way or the other.

Nedelle's heart danced with excitement as she heard the murmurs of whispers in the bustling streets of Oba. There was a buzz of anticipation in the air, a sense of adventure waiting to unfold. She had caught wind of a back-alley market selling mysterious potions, and she knew it was the perfect excuse to whisk Zaeryn away for a little chat – about a certain yaeli girl named Vaena.

Zaeryn couldn't help but smile at Nedelle's infectious enthusiasm, her zest for life shining like a beacon in the crowded market. He wasn't quite sure what she had in mind, but he trusted her instincts and was eager to see where their impromptu adventure would take them – knowing Nedelle it could be anything.

With a playful twinkle in his eye, he followed her lead, ready for whatever surprises lay in store.

Nedelle's stride was confident and bold as she led the way through the labyrinthine streets of Oba, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.

As they neared the darkened alleyway, Nedelle quickened her pace, her heart racing with anticipation. She couldn't wait to see the look of wonder on Zaeryn's face when they stumbled upon the hidden market – it was sure to be a moment they would never forget. She hoped that their conversation would also be a reason to remember the day she thought to herself with almost a giggle.

Zaeryn's eyes widened with curiosity as they approached the secluded alleyway, the air alive with the promise of secrets and perhaps even temptation? He could sense Nedelle's excitement bubbling over, her enthusiasm contagious as they ventured into the unknown together. Zaeryn wasn’t sure what would have brought her to somewhere that had such an air to it, but he was willing to follow her lead.

He reached her her hand, his attempt to keep her safe in this part of Oba and let her continue to lead the way.

As they reached the makeshift stall tucked away in the shadows, Nedelle's heart sank at the sight of its empty shelves. She had been so sure they would find something magical here, something to spark their imaginations and ignite their spirits. She looked around, the desperation reaching her eyes before she looked to Zaeryn.

But just as Nedelle was about to voice her disappointment, a mischievous voice rang out from the shadows, sending a thrill of excitement coursing through her veins. "Looking for something, my dears?" The voice was smooth and sly, dripping with an air of mystery that sent shivers down her spine.

Zaeryn watched his friend sink through multiple emotions before a strange voice rang out from the shadows. His face couldn’t help but show his disbelief in the situation. Surely Nedelle wouldn’t have come here knowingly looking for someone who looked as they thought could curse them on the spot?

”Nedelle… did you mean to be here?” Zaeryn whispered to his friend, hoping the strange figure wouldn’t notice (or take offense).

Nedelle gave Zaeryn the tiniest little shrug, her face lighting up with a welcoming smile. ”Oh yes! My friend here would like to try his hand at a truth serum. Something to really loosen his lips.” She bantered with the gnarled looking earthling that emerged in a rather foreboding cloak.

The figured seemed to look the two of them up and down before giving a curt nod of the head. ”If that’s what the heart desires…” the voice trailed off before riffling through a creaky cupboard on the side of the wagon stall. The aged hands emerged with a vial of golden swirling liquid. ”Take this at the peak of the moon and it will do as is needed for your troubles.” the figure whispered into the darkness.

Nedelle squealed in delight before grabbing the potion out of the earthling’s outstretched hand. A brief ”ahem” left the figure’s lips.

”Oh! Yes! Here.” Nedelle squeaked before rattling some coins out of her bag. ”I think this should be enough and some for your troubles.” She grinned to the woman before snatching Zaeryn’s hand and leading him back toward the light.

”Nedelle. You can’t possibly be serious…” Zaeryn trailed off after Nedelle had led them back into safety. ”Why on this earth would I need a truth serum?” Zaeryn was more than troubled by the idea that Nedelle would think that he was lying about something.

He couldn’t imagine what the purpose of the whole ordeal was at this point.

Nedelle’s bubbly, friendly smile seemed to almost turn menacing as they stopped under an intricately colored awning. ”It’s not for you to tell me anything.” She started.

”I see the way you look at her.” Nedelle blurted out, nudging Zaeryn with her elbow. ”You need to drink this and tell her how you really feel.”

She didn’t think she needed to say out loud that the ‘her’ in question was Vaena. After all of their traveling, Nedelle would be a moron to not notice the signals.

”She’ll never notice if you don’t say anything to her, and I doubt you ever would.” She giggled to her friend, tryin her best to interfere in Zaeryn’s life for the better.

Zaeryn felt the blush creeping up his neck before he could properly stifle it. ”You can’t be totally serious.” he sighed out, though his sigh sounded strained and false. He was hiding something, not what he was used to doing with Nedelle.

”I don’t… you see… I mean…” He fumbled over his words. ”Ok.” he finally admitted. ”Maybe I had a certain… admiration for her and her abrasive demeanor. It does not mean I need to take a truth serum and confess my feelings that I’m not entirely sure I have.” He took the small vial out of Nedelle’s hands and looked it over. ”And who’s to say you didn’t just get swindled?”

”Well there’s only one way to find out, right?” She pinched Zaeryn’s side lightly before tugging him along once more. They needed to get back to the camp… and they needed to put that vial to the test. Someone here was going to end up together or Nedelle was failing at her job.

”You really should just throw caution to the wind and give it a try.” She called back as she nearly dragged Zaeryn along.

Zaeryn held on tightly to the vial in one hand and Nedelle’s hand in the other. He spent the majority of the trip back just letting Nedelle get on with talking and filling the air with noise, but Zaeryn’s mind did wander to Vaena.

The what ifs and opportunities of what could be lingered in Zaeryn’s mind, falling heavy on his shoulders. He would never know if he didn’t talk to her. But did he want to open that door? Did he want to test the waters?

He threw a smile to Nedelle as she continued to talk. Maybe she was right. Maybe he needed to see what the cards had to say for him…
