It had been years since Nyko was last in Matori. Like in the past, he was only here on a temporary basis and would soon be returning to Oba. While he very well could have remained in Oba while Yunan attended to business, Nyko wasn't keen on staying in the city by himself. There was still an underlying threat of attack from those that knew him or at the very least, one he perceived in his mind. The reality was that Nyko didn't trust an Oban as far as he could throw one and didn't seem keen to roam their streets on his own.
So, any opportunity to get away and recharge was a welcomed one.
Since he didn't have any personal stacks in Yunan's business dealings, Nyko dressed for the beach. Instead of his normally tight fitting attire, he'd donned a pair of simple loose pants and a colorful sash to keep them up. Today he was keen on doing one thing; fishing. He'd heard that it was relaxing and something about bringing home a meal that he'd caught sounded appealing. Of course he had no idea how to do that, but...well, he could learn.
He'd bought a pole, some bait (as disgusting as it was), and a bucket. Now that he was standing on the dock though, surrounded by much more experienced fisherman, most of whom were snickering at him, made his cheeks darken.
This was going to be a mess.

Theriar had pulled his little supply wooden row boat up to the dock and was about to head to the market for a few things when he noticed a hopeful but painfully out of place looking gentleman. Well, the lad had been brave to try to follow his dream. That deserved something. Besides he was teaching all of the young kids these days why not a slightly older one who had a go get em attitude. "Hey there Laddy, would you like some assistance there? I'm a fair teacher ask any of the prentices. You have all the right ingredients you just need the recipe." There that oughta do it. The olive branch as it were. He taught other courses too, but fishing..was his favorite. His passion, his career, his life, his bread winner.

Laddy? Nyko wasn't sure what he was expecting when he turned, but someone near his age wasn't it. He'd definitely imagined a beard at the very least, maybe some greying hair, though the antennae were a bit strange. His eyes lingered on them for a moment before drifting back to the mans face and Nyko gave a nod.
"If you've the time I'd love a lesson. I don't have much coin on me though, if that's what you're after." He held up his supplies. "Spent it all this morning." Nyko had reason to believe he'd been upselled because he looked to be an easy mark, and honestly, the seller was right to do so. He would have done the exact same thing if the positions were reversed.

Painted Moose Holy cow I am so very sorry about how long this too to reply too cone of shame cone of shame! "It would be a pleasure Sir and don't worry about the coin, I'll give you a freebie, much better than learning the hard way, safer too." "Were you looking to troll with a hook, cast or net?" All were good ways to fish, "I could give basic lessons in each if that works for you?" He had found that he loved teaching, especially the fishing. Once a fish took the bait for the first time and he could see the person's face light up as they were converted to part time fisherfolk, was all the reward he needed. What good was being good at something if you didn't share you skills with others so that they might find the same joy. Tendaji was never lacking for fish in its rich waters so he was not worried about competition at all.

Well that was fortunate. He'd been readily expecting to chase off a local trying to earn some quick coin, but an actual helping hand? That he wouldn't turn away. "Troll?" This lesson was already starting off grand. Nyko held up his pole and shrugged his shoulders. "I've got this so I'm not sure what any of the rest of that was supposed to mean. I sort of understand what net fishing is supposed to be, but I don't have one."
In truth he'd bought the basics the seller had suggested and nothing else. There had been a variety of other baubles and things that they tried to get him to go with, which might have been what this man was speaking of, but Nyko hadn't touched them. The last thing he wanted was to spend all of his coin on things he wouldn't use.
"Got a name?"

"That is the best to start with, what you have there. Trolling is fishing with a moving boat, casting is how you get the lure or hook where you want it to go. Fishing is relatively easy, so long as you have a great deal of patience." That was the most important tool once you got the basics down. He was delighted that he had been here right when this fellow had needed help. He loved teaching and there was just something about people's faces when they hooked their first fish. It was very exciting and often rewarding. Sometimes you got dinner and that was always a good day. "I do have a name, it is Theriar, a pleasure to meet you. I run a fishing business off the coast here." He said by way of introduction. "And you?" He asked politely. It was nice to talk to someone new once in a while. You never knew what cool new thing you would learn or perhaps find a new friend but at the least you had a nice chat. He didn't really interact with too many people on the regular so random talks when he was off ship were quite welcome.

Ah. A great deal of patience, huh? Well that was...not necessarily Nyko had in spades but maybe he could still make it work? He needed a hobby outside of work to deal with his stress while he was in the area so he was determined to see this through. As long as he didn't grow too frustrated along the way and break his rod. "Nicosia, but you can call me Nyko. I'm the lead vocalist at Golden Gilly's theater in Belrea. If you're ever in Valmon it's the most ostentatious structure in the city. Just follow the paintings of my face and you'll find it." He couldn't help standing a little straighter, with a horribly proud look on his face. Nyko wasn't sure if Theriar had ever been to Belrea or even if the man had any interested in performers, but something about letting someone else know he was a big deal just felt good. "Thanks for taking the time to help me out."

"I will keep that in mind." Theriar said politely, wondering what kind of strange person he was dealing with, the man certainly seemed proud and he was handsome, so far as Theriar could tell. Must be a good singer but Theriar was not really the Belrea type, he liked the sea and simple sea faring gadgets. Airships were creepy to him, useful but creepy. He liked to have earth or water underneath him the air travel terrified him. "It must be hard to get to that position." "Not a problem, I like teaching people fishing, its a useful skill and does much to calm the mind and soul." If he were singing everynight for a bunch of strangers he would need the calm, quiet and solitude. Course he wasn't a professional either. He gave the male some pointers and they let him cast for a bit. "The trick is just figuring out when to let the line go in your throw. Near the end of the cast is best."

"It was extremely hard." Nyko jumped to add. "Do you know how many others I had to beat out for that kind of spot? And locals, at that!" Hard didn't begin to describe it! Why, he'd had to crawl up from the literal gutter to - Oh, but that wasn't why he was here, was he? He was here to calm himself. "Sorry, it just...comes out sometimes." Taking the lesson to heart, the Matorian gave his hand at casting. The first was haphazard at best, with Nyko swinging his pole with far too much vigor, but the second at least saw his hook hit the water. "Okay so the end of the cast..." Pulling his line back, Nyko took a half step back and sent it back out. This time went much smoother and while it was far from perfect he felt a little p***k of pride. "I just thought of something; is this hard to do when it's windy? Seems like it would wobble everywhere."

"Don't worry about it, our passions sometimes leak out of our mouths as they do our eyes, you should see me on a bad fishing day. There are swear words that come out that I think were more creative than I thought I was capable of. You must be right talented sir," he dipped his head respectfully. Those who could sing were well cherished in his family. "It is much harder when it is windy yes, you seem to be getting the hang of it fast enough, right skilled." "Sometimes it blows into trees which is less than fun, that hook becomes very pesky at times, sunken logs are a bit worse, but if shallow enough it is easy enough to dive down and fix, sometimes wiggling works and other times not. The worst is if the line breaks."
