Lysithea had her list of questions written down, and she had debated for a while if she should bring someone with her, even if it were just for moral support…but, ultimately, she decided to go alone to talk with Cosmos. It seemed like it would be better that way, and if she were going to get upset…hopefully she wouldn’t get upset, but if she were to lose her cool…it would be better to be alone for that.

Texts had been sent to Zac, Malcolm and Rhiannon just…so that someone knew where she was and what she was doing. Evan had been told in person since he had been home, and had helpfully offered some snacks for her to bring which…she had declined. She wasn’t sure if Cosmos ate or not, but…she wasn’t really feeling very hungry.

She had gone up to her homeworld without really thinking about it, and once again sat herself beneath her favorite tree, amused and a little excited to find out that it was night. The moon looked so different without the soft, bright light of day, and she glanced around, eager to see just what was different about it.

There was the soft humming of one of the bugs, one she had heard before but…it sounded a bit more magical as a night song.

Closing her eyes for a moment, Lysithea drew in a deep breath, though paused when she felt something furry tickling her face, and upon opening her eyes, saw a pair of large, almost glowing pale blue ones staring back at her.

The creature in question was…utterly impractical, but she couldn’t help but love it regardless. It was very round, about the size of a softball, with batwings and a long, silky tail like that of a fox. It stared at her for another few minutes and then darted off, cutting the sound of the singing bug off as it found its dinner.

Ah. Well. The circle of life happened everywhere, it seemed…but. That wasn’t the point.

The point was a talk with Cosmos, and settling herself down once again, Lysithea closed her eyes and called out with her heart. With her starseed. Hoping that the woman would come to talk.

For a long moment, there was no response. No sign that Cosmos had heard, or that she was coming at all. The night was relatively still beyond Lysithea’s world; the stars twinkled, but nothing seemed to move.

Everything seemed like it was frozen in time. But, the universe was a large place, full of many worlds, and many people.

There was only one Cosmos, though.

And, she was on her way to Lysithea.

At first, she was little more than a shooting star in the sky. As she got closer, a soft, pastel rainbow tail seemed to grow from behind her.

It took nearly a moment to cross the sky, and then, when it was just above Lysithea, it faded.

And then, an energy signature, and Cosmos stood before her only a second after that. She held her staff with loose fingers, and her eyes made a quick scan of the area before landing on Lysithea.

Cosmos was almost impossible to read; she looked tired, but resolute. Peaceful, but distant.

For a moment, she was silent. “Your starseed was calling. Are you all right?”

Lysithea watched the whole process, and found herself sitting up a little straighter when Cosmos finally arrived. “It was, and I am all right, yes…I just. Wondered if you had some time to sit and talk with me. I…have a few questions that I hope you can answer.”

She saw that the woman looked tired, and for a moment, a brief moment, Lysithea regretted not bringing the food Evan had offered…it might have…been the kind thing to do but. It was too late now.

Still…

Reaching into her subspace pocket, she withdrew a bag of chips and a small bag of some name brand cookies, holding them out. “Can I offer you some refreshment? You look. Tired.” And thin, and just.

Did…goddesses? Deity’s? Cosmoses? Whatever it was that she was…did she even eat?

Cosmos looked at the food briefly, and the shadow of something like a smile seemed to cross her face. “I’m fine, thank you.”

Just busy, though she didn’t say it. She wasn’t much for small talk; she had neither time nor luxury for it. She didn’t sit, but she leaned against her staff a bit and let her eyes drift across the horizon as she took in Lysithea’s world.

“I am glad you’re not in danger. Your starseed was very loud. What questions are on your mind?”

Lysithea nodded and slipped the food back into subspace, watching Cosmos with a thoughtful expression. “How often…have you come to help me? I…I’ve forgotten everything after the corruption, and after you brought me back, I forgot most of my life with chaos that didn’t involve me being Lysithea, and I suppose…I’m just trying to figure things out once again.”

She finally glanced away from the woman and idly picked at some of the grasses beside her, mentally chewing over what she wanted to say and how she wanted to say it, and finally gave a small sigh. “You acted like you knew me, and were honestly concerned about me. It…threw me for a loop. I obviously didn’t know you and had no memories of any shared past so…I came as a shock, I’m sure you understand…but. The more I try to dig into my past, the more your name comes up…”

Finally looking at the woman again, Lysithea chanced a question. “Were we friends?”

For another moment, Cosmos was quiet. She juggled the question in a way that wasn’t easy to understand. She remained passive as she contemplated, but finally, she could only shrug.

“I don’t have the luxury of friendship in the way that you do. I care. But I don’t know if you could call it friendship. But I have known you for years. Our paths have crossed many times. You have always been passionate about rooting out the Chaos and saving others. We shared that in common. I didn’t want to lose you to Chaos, not when you’ve worked so hard to save others from it.”

She seemed peaceful, at least; she was tired, but not unwilling to speak. The gentle breeze of Lysithea danced through her hair. They were questions she wasn’t used to; there was no Chaos here.

No one that needed to be saved from it.

She didn’t quite seem unsure of herself but she did seem like she had a lot to think over while being here.

Lysithea hummed softly and nodded slowly. “...You. Didn’t come when I called for you, and I think that contributed to what happened. I don’t remember, but it was when I was trying to save my friend Ilse…she told me that you didn’t show up.”

For a moment, she looked away and then back to Cosmos. “Why didn’t you show up then? Ilse was there when I corrupted, I think she helped them get me.”

Picking at the skin around her thumbnail, Lysithea drew in a breath. “Where were you. And why didn’t you come? I spoke with a friend and he said that you never came to help him either. How do you…decide who’s worthy of being helped and who isn’t?” Drawing in another breath, hoping to steady herself, she looked at Cosmos with a frown. “I just. Don’t understand.”

Now, Cosmos looked at her with a different weight in her expression. She was sifting through her memories, but in the end she just shook her head.

“It isn’t as simple as that.”

Her voice was soft, gentle. Tired.

“I don’t decide who is worthy, or who deserves it more. If I hear a starseed calling and can come, I do. If I didn’t come, it’s because something at the Cauldron prevented me from coming. I protect it,” she explained. “And all the starseeds within. It is my job to heal them, and return them to the cycle of rebirth. If something were to breach the walls of the Cauldron, the entire cycle could be disrupted. It could be the end of all life, permanently. I hope you don't take personal offense. I have never disguised my priorities. There is no one to guard the Cauldron but myself. And, it is very far from Earth. The distance is not easy, and I do not always have the time or energy to come when called. I do my best. Earth is important to me. But I cannot be everywhere at once. I am sorry that you were hurt in my absence.”

“What is the Cauldron?” It sounded like a cop out, and Lysithea didn’t…quite understand. The idea of the Cauldron wasn’t something that she…could quite grasp, but now she knew that there were starseeds involved so.

If it was something that important…”Why are you the only one who can help then? Why aren’t there more people who can help when you’re…otherwise engaged?”

If she couldn’t be two places at once…why didn’t she appoint someone who could spend their time looking for those who needed help. Why couldn't. “Does the Cauldron matter when the war is here? When the war is here…when the Senshi and Knights who can help are here…Sure there are Senshi who are still out there but…their worlds are all infected…Cosmos, if we lose the Earth…”

Lysithea rubbed the bridge of her nose. “If we lose the earth we’ve lost too, what good is having starseeds if there’s nowhere for them to be reborn?”

Now, Cosmos’ face settled into something like a frown.

“The Galaxy Cauldron. Where all life is born, and where all life returns,” she answered first. “I am not responsible for my creation, nor do I have anyone to ask these questions to. But I understand the importance of my job and I have diligently served the Cauldron. I think you misunderstand my purpose, perhaps. My trips to Earth are outside of my duties to the Cauldron. Earth is important, but if the Cauldron is destroyed, so too is all life. You cannot ask me to forsake the souls in the Cauldron.”

Her face had settled into a frown. “I cannot devote myself completely to Earth. If the Cauldron is destroyed, then there is no future for anyone. If Earth is destroyed, I can heal the starseeds and try again.”

Alastor was right. All this woman cared about was the Cauldron. Where life was born and life returned…it…

Was almost sad.

“I do apologize, if I understood your purpose before…that’s all gone now, I only know what I know from what others have told me and the memory of meeting you when you saved me. I suppose…I had just thought you were something more than a nursery maid to starseeds…”

Perhaps that was a little bit harsh, and perhaps she had a lot of nerve saying such things…and perhaps…irritating the one person who did help…whenever she was able wasn’t…the greatest of ideas.

“I’m not asking you to forsake anything, but…if we can’t find some way to stop what’s happening on Earth…I don’t know if you’ll be getting enough souls in your Cauldron to even be worth protecting. Not with those in the Negaverse crushing them and eating them and keeping them simply so that they can’t be reborn…” She drew in a breath, trying to stop herself from trembling with the anger that was starting to build.

“If you can’t come here as often as you’re needed…then we need to figure something else out. Is that possible?”

Cosmos’ expression lost some of its warmth, and while she didn’t seem unhappy or cruel, there was something almost statuesque about her. She could see Lysithea’s anger. She could feel it.

She stood a little taller and leaned on her staff less; her position was a bit more rigid and guarded. Her eyes stayed fixed on Lysithea, no longer drawn to the world around her.

“Yes,” she answered. “There are those on Earth that have unlocked the power. You may find them easier to reach than I am. They do not tend to the Cauldron as I do, but they are more like you. Senshi, Knights. Not all starseeds can unlock the power to heal others. It is rare, but it has been done. It takes great strength and resolve.”

Lysithea wondered if that was meant to sound as condescending as she was taking it, honestly she doubted it. It wasn’t Cosmos saying that she didn’t have the strength or resolve but.

It still felt like it.

Quietly, Lysithea watched the woman and gave a small, slow nod. “I see. Then…I’ll work on that. Finding those who can help, and I’ll try not to bother you as much as I seemed to in the past.” It would work out best for all involved at that point. Cosmos could spend more time focusing on her Cauldron...and Lysithea could stop bothering her with every little person who needed saving.

“I will still call though, if I can’t find anyone else. I hope you know that I won’t stop fighting for those who want to be free of Chaos. I’ll never stop fighting for them. I fought for them before they took me, and I’ll still fight for them. They can all be saved if we just try hard enough, and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Pushing herself to her feet, Lysithea crossed the distance between herself and Cosmos and extended her hand. “Thank you for what you’ve done for me in the past. I do appreciate it.”

Cosmos nodded; she stretched her free hand out to meet Lysithea’s out of courtesy more than a need to adhere to social expectations.

“I never said you bothered me in the past. I never thought you did. I don’t want you to stop fighting for those that can be saved. I don’t want chaos to take Earth. I wish I could do more. But the Cauldron has too much energy, too much power to fall into the wrong hands. If chaos found its way into the Cauldron, Earth would not stand a chance. Nothing, nowhere, would.”

She looked up at the sky, like she could see the Cauldron from here.

Maybe she could.

“I hope you can save them. If I can come, I will. Always.”

Lysithea withdrew her hand and gave a nod. “All right then, thank you.”

She wasn’t sure if she should wait for Cosmos to leave or if she should just…leave herself…but after a moment’s deliberation, she did just that, vanishing from her homeworld and landing back on Earth, feeling…if anything, worse than she had before she had gone to speak with Cosmos. It.

…It had done nothing to actually help her, or answer her questions…it had only really given her more…

More and a hearty annoyance and understanding as to why Alastor didn’t trust her. Well. That was fine. Lysithea would simply find others who could help. Others who could remove chaos from starseeds. Maybe…if they worked hard enough at it, their court could figure out how do it for more than just youma.

Maybe with enough time and effort and…

Her lip curled into a slight sneer. Strength and Resolve, they could figure it out.

For now though…for now Lysithea let her powered form drop and began to walk, wanting to do nothing more than clear her head.
