The idea of talking with Cosmos shouldn’t be causing her to feel so utterly overwhelmed but, here she was, sitting on the couch and staring idly out the window without really seeing what was out there. The leaves were changing, she could vaguely tell that as her eyes unfocused and the scene blurred beyond recognition. The leaves were changing and it was quite beautiful but.

Other than that…

Talia let out a sigh and shifted so her chin was resting on the back of the couch, wondering if Rhiannon would mind terribly if she asked to hang out, or…just chat on the phone or something. Wondering who she could bother without it seeming as though she were bothering them.

Wondering if that was nothing more than a dirty trick question as she was always a bother.

Stop it. She wasn’t. She had to stop thinking like this, had to just deal with whatever happened when she worked up to talking to Cosmos and…

The knock on the door made Talia start in confusion, blinking slowly and frowning as she looked towards the door, wondering if she had imagined the sound but…no, there it was again.

Standing, she made her way over, wondering who could be knocking. Anyone who visited…mostly just came in on their own by now, and she didn’t think they were expecting any packages or anything…and it was too early in the year for people to be selling cookies but.

Talia opened the door and blinked at the young woman who stood outside. “...wait. Are you here to sell cookies? Because, I’ll buy some, but I really don’t need any…I bake myself, you see so…”

Linnea glanced down to the plate of cookies in her hands that she'd spent the last few hours working on. They were pumpkin spice, with cream cheese frosting. Seasonally appropriate, the blog that she'd found them on had insisted, just like it had said that they were great for gifts.

"I'm sorry," she said, although her gaze was somewhere distant. She hadn't fully come back to herself after seeing what she'd seen on Alastor, and then seeing Daphne in ruins after that. She thought that was the reason that Malcolm had sent her to meet his friends, and she was trying, but finding the energy to be sociable was hard.

"I didn't know you already baked. They're supposed to be gifts, for the hostess. I heard that was something you did in your culture." She held the cookies out in case the woman at the door wanted them. "I'm looking for someone named Talia. Malcolm said I should try to meet her, and the cat seemed to agree."

Talia blinked and glanced down at the cookies. “Oh…wait. What?”

Those weren’t selling cookies, and after a long moment of staring at the girl in some confusion, a light bulb seemed to turn on above Talia’s head. “Oh! Oh. Wow. No, I’m. My brain isn’t really working very well right now, you’re here to see me? I’m Talia, and I do bake, but I never say no to other people's baking!”

She took a moment, looking the girl over and finally brightened. “You’re…Linnea? The one who lives with Malcolm, right? Sometimes you…ah. Are called Daphne?”

Thankfully, her powered name was easy to mistake for a civilian one, and it came in handy right now, but, Talia broke into a smile and gestured for the girl to come in. “I’d love company, and if Malcolm, and I’m supposing Soleiyu…or whatever Malcolm’s cat’s name is, Julie…or something, I don’t…Names are hard. But, hi! I’m Talia. Yes, welcome!”

"Yes, I'm Linnea, Malcolm's roommate," she said, and made sure that she had stepped all the way through the door before she added, "And yes, I'm Sailor Daphne. And, yes, I know both the Mauvians, but Soleiyu is the one who lives here."

Hopefully that clarified some things.

There was still something off about the look in Daphne's eyes. There was still something heavy and awkward about her movements, but she managed a small smile as she held the plate out to Talia.

It was lucky that she'd become more practiced in small talk.

"If you bake, maybe you can tell me if these turned out right. I cook more than I make sweets, so I just followed the recipe," she said. They certainly looked good, though, and they had made the house smell very cozy for a while.

A moment passed before she added, "And you're Lysithea, right? I think I saw you for a second with Adria on Lysithea before everything started happening."

Talia nodded. “I’d be happy to let you know if they turned out right. They look delicious!” Reaching out, she took the plate, though set it on the coffee table, watching Linnea for a moment. “If…you don’t mind me being forward, yeah. I’m Lysithea. And you…really look like you could use a hug…”

She held her arms open to the girl and gave a small, encouraging smile. “I just happen to have two arms that really enjoy giving hugs, so if you don’t feel too awkward in hugging a stranger…”

No, no. The girl looked like she needed a lot of hugs. A lot of hugs and a good long cry. Obviously…she didn’t have a Michel she could just. Sob pathetically on. “I’m glad you came to visit.”

Without the plate to occupy her hands, Linnea stood there rather stiffly. One one hand, she did feel awkward about hugging strangers. On the other, she was so exhausted right now, so emotionally drained, that she wasn’t sure she cared.

She crossed the distance between them with small steps and then she wrapped her arms around Talia’s back, in turn. She stayed there for a few seconds, gave her shoulder a quick pat, and then pulled away again.

She’d been doing a lot of collapsing onto people on sobbing heaps, and she wasn’t sure if that was what she wanted to do in this exact moment, but the shorter hug turned out to be warm, and nice.

“I just found out for sure that everyone I care about is gone,” she said, flatly. Her tears were used, but the heaviness remained. “It’s been a rough few weeks. I think that’s why they’re trying to get me out of the house, but I don’t know how I’ll be at keeping up the smile.”

A moment passed, and she seemed to remember her manners.

“You’re being very sweet. I’m glad you appreciate the cookies.”

Talia was reluctant to draw away, but she couldn't force comfort on someone, no matter how much she might want to. “I’m so sorry to hear that…I…” She drew in a breath and gestured for Linnea to have a seat on the couch. “I can’t say that I know for sure what you’re going through, but I know what it’s like to lose everything…I was corrupted about a year ago and lost my whole life until that point…and then I got a new one, and when I purified…I lost it. It’s…it does feel impossible to keep up a smile, but you don’t have to, you know. Nobody’s going to be angry at you if you can’t be as happy as you normally are, you need time to process things, Linnea.”

“I’m glad that you came here though. I’m really glad to meet you, and I hope that we can be friends, you…”

Hesitating for a moment, Talia continued. “You might have lost everyone you cared about…but. You have us. You have Malcolm, Soleiyu, not everyone that you care about is gone…your new friends…new family…we’re all still here…and we’re not going anywhere.”

Linnea reached up to slip her earrings off as soon as she was more settled inside. She felt off-balance without her tail, or if she caught a glimpse of eyes with round pupils in the mirror, and while she could deal with it in order to blend in, it wasn't something she wanted to deal with on top of everything else.

She'd shifted to her natural state before she went to join Talia on the couch.

"You were corrupted?" she asked, and that was a concept that got her mind off things for a few seconds. There was curiosity in her voice under the hint of disgust that always came up when Chaos was mentioned.

Someone had probably mentioned it to her in passing, but it was still different to see someone who had broken free from the Negaverse with her own eyes.

There was something more than curiosity there when she asked, "How did you keep going after that? How did you start over?" It was something more like desperation in her voice.

"Adria and Soleiyu have been nothing but kind to me, and I've met a few others in passing, but it all still feels like so much."

“Yeah…it wasn’t by choice. I’m not sure what happened but. I got corrupted, lost all of my memories…all of my life before the corruption and fed a lie that I was the sister to a Negaverse officer…it…it all sounded pretty legit…but.” Talia shrugged and gave a sigh. “It was hard. Not that I remember much, but I remember being Lysithea over with them all…I remember that I could never…I couldn’t ever really get behind the violence that they enjoyed…the real turning point was when my so called ‘brother’ attacked someone who was acting like his friend, another senshi, Malus…he’s a part of the court, he’s great but…”

Talia shrugged and reached to grab a cookie, nibbling on it and nodding happily. “These are delicious…but, I couldn’t justify why he would use one breath to say that nobody liked him and then try to destroy someone who said that they did…and it just. Was a rabbit hole from there, but now I’m back, and I remember things from…February until now, and my powered life from November of last year. And that’s it. Ah. As for how I kept going…it’s been hard, I can’t lie about that. I’ve…”

She shrugged, sinking back into the couch slightly. “There have been times that I’ve just wanted to run away or disappear…times where I’ve felt like…I’m nothing now compared to who I was…and that I’ll never be as good as that…but. My friends are everything to me. The court, the people in this house…they’ve pulled me through. Even if they don’t know it. And I do try not to let them know it. I don’t like to show that I’m unhappy,..and I’m halfway sensing that you’re a lot like that? Unless I’m reading you wrong.”

Linnea could listen, she found. That didn't require her to be happy. It didn't require her to put on a brave face. It did, she decided, require cookies, and she picked on up off the plate to shove rather unceremoniously into her mouth as she listened to Talia talk about her experiences, and the lies she'd been told.

First, it was her tail that twitched tellingly against the couch, and then her lips, and then she rolled her eyes at the antics of this brother.

"I only know so much about the Negaverse," she said. "I've only been here since last winter, too. I know less than you, but I've seen the part of Chaos where it makes people deluded. I've seen the part where it makes people think that nobody could possibly care about them."

It had been the Dark Mirror senshi who she'd had an actual conversation with about all of that, but she'd seen some of it with the Negaverse, too.

She'd also seen it elsewhere. Her tired eyes were somewhere distant. "It was the same on my world. It got into people's heads, turned them against others who had never shown them anything but kindness, against their own friends and family. It-" she swallowed, but continued, "Destroyed them all, in the end. I'm glad that you, at least, got out."

She wasn't sure if she could say the same for herself. It felt like it would have been easier if she'd just died and reincarnated like the others.

"I understand not wanting others to see what you're going through," she said, because there was no denying it. For the past few weeks, she'd been past the point where that was viable, but usually she tried. "You don't have to do it with me, though. I just met you. With me, there's no past version of yourself to live up to. Not that I think your friends would mind, either, at least not the ones that I already know."

“The same goes for you, Linnea. You don’t have to pretend with me. And I know that my friends don’t…hold me to her, but. We can’t always make our brains accept the truth, no matter how much we push them. She let out a long sigh and took up another cookie, chewing it slowly.

“I’m sorry that you’ve lost everything from your past…I truly am…you…you won’t lose us though. I can promise you that much. We’re pretty tight knit and we won’t want to lose you. If you want to join us, you are welcome and wanted…Chaos…chaos is such a deceiver…but together we can work to drive it out. That’s…the best part of this court. We’ve…saved youma from being…youma in the past, not that i remember, but they’ve told me…one of the people who live here was a youma…ah. Two of them, actually. And when we were helping Alastor…we found another power that we had and it literally drove the chaos away from us so that…that was helpful too…”

Talia gave a small smile and sighed at the same time. “I’m glad you came to visit, and I know I’m lousy at helping but…I hope you at least can feel a little more like you’re not alone…”

Talia spoke, and Linnea listened with no judgement. She'd meant what she said about the other woman not having to pretend to be happy. She just nodded as she spoke about her doubts.

One of the things she said stood out to Linnea, though, enough so that she stopped chewing her cookie for a second.

"You call it a court," she said, and the title made it sound vaguely governmental but it wasn't as if she wasn't used to that kind of thing, "And you say I could join it? Help drive away Chaos with you and the others?"

It was an interesting idea. She hate Chaos, even if she'd nearly fallen for it for a moment back on Alastor. Seeing what had happened to her world only made that more pronounced.

On the other hand, Malcolm and Soleiyu had been nothing but kind to her. Now Talia was treating her much the same.

"How would that work?" she asked.

“How would…you joining us work?” Talia paused, blinking in some confusion and tilting her head to the side. “...Well, I mean. It’s a big initiation process…so you’d have to meet everyone and have dinner and like. Say you want to join. Very difficult. Very…I’m kidding. I’m literally kidding. If you want to join all you have to do is say so and I’ll set up a meeting with everyone else so they can meet you! There’s quite a few of us, and one that I’m really hoping to get back. His name is Monoceros, and he’s corrupted now like I was…”

Her smile faded just slightly but then brightened again. “But we’ll bring him back. Don’t worry. We would never leave a member of our family behind. No matter what. That’s…well. I’m going to decide that that’s in the rules. Or…something. If we make rules or something. We haven’t made rules. We…it’s still new, but we would love to have you, Linnea. We really, really would."

If the thought of a formal dinner was supposed to scare Linnea, it didn't. The playful, teasing way that Talia was talking about it did bring a smile to her face, despite everything.

"I would be okay with that, actually," she said. "A diplomatic meal. I used to do them all the time, and I was looking at Earth fashion for formal events like that. Have you heard of ballgowns?"

It was still a stretch to say that her face was lighting up, but the way she held herself was improving talking about this instead of talking about all the terrible things that had happened to both of them.

"I want to wear one. They're so gorgeous, but then, it's probably good that it's easier than that." She made sure she was looking right into Talia's eyes as she said, "I want to join."

A moment passed and she added, "I'll help you with your friend, too."

Talia paused and then laughed softly, nodding. She was happy to see that her new friend seemed to be feeling better, talking of easier things…and the fact that she wanted to join the court…wanted to help with Monoceros, Talia couldn’t help but grin, nodding. “Well, then join you shall, Linnea. I don’t have a ball gown, but they are quite pretty. Maybe we could learn to sew and make ourselves some at some point.”

…Not at first of course but. It would give them both something to work towards and to look forward to when and if they ever accomplished it.

“Now, how about you and I get some pampering done? Would you like me to paint your nails? I’m not sure if you’ve done that yet, but Earth friends do it with one another as a sign of friendship and for something fun…and you know. To feel pretty which…we both very much deserve right now! What do you say?”

She felt lighter, excited. Ready to see where this friendship led and…excited for the future with Linnea…Daphne in it. Their family was growing, and she loved it.
