Alfina burst frantically into the family home sobbing. Her face was flushed brightly and wet with heavy tears. Having run practically the entire way home, her heart was thudding in her chest roughly, which did little to help matters. "I'm never baking again!" she shrieked into the air as she ran into her room. She wasn't sure if anyone was even home at the moment. She flopped onto the bed with the dramatic flair that only an emotional teenager could manage and buried her face against her pillow to wail against it. "I hate it! I hate the people in town! I suck at everything!"

Painted Moose via Discord

Taijana had been busying herself all morning with a bit of Autumnal cleaning. It was just cool enough that she could open all the windows and doors to allow a fresh breeze through the home without leaving a chill. There was a fine layer of grime on her arms, a little smudge across her nose where she’d run a hand over it, and much more on the apron tied about her waist. All in all she felt relatively peaceful with the repetitively, cleansing work-

-until someone burst in the door.

Taijana let out a surprised squeal at the noise and reached up to grasp the cloth above her chest. If she’d been a few years younger she might have fainted, but experience with teenagers prepared her for the noise. Still, the noises of footfalls pounding through the home was worrisome, more so when she could hear sobbing accompanying them. At first she wasn’t sure which one of the children it was, but soon enough Alfina made herself known and Taijana followed after her.

For a moment she hovered by the doorway to judge the situation. The scene before her made the mother’s heart ache. “I rather like your baking.” She wasn’t sure if her voice would be heard over her daughter’s much louder presence, but Taijana didn’t want to just come in if she wasn’t wanted. “What happened in town?”

Gods, the world was ending. Nothing was going to be right in her life ever again! What was the point of even trying anymore?!

She flinched when she heard her mother's soft voice in the distance.. and the reassurance only made her cry harder. "You're just saying that because you're my mooooom," she whined out. No one actually liked her food! It had all been fake! Everything was fake!

Still, she couldn't help gravitating toward the potential comfort that a friendly ear could bring. Getting the slightest handle on her sobbing, she snuffled heavily and shook her head as she sat up. "They didn't like the puffs." She bit back another sob and hugged the pillow to her chest. "I always make the puffs. Everyone says they like them. Some guys came in and bought some and.. and.. and said they were gross!" Her eyes darted up to her mother in a silent, unconscious plea. "What if they're right? What if they're the only one's willing to tell me the truth?"

Oooh no. This called for more than a few sweet words and a promise of better days. Taijana brushed her hands off on the apron around her waist before making her way into the room. The petite yaeli sat on the edge of her youngest daughter’s bed and reached out to put an arm on her shoulder. “No no, sweetheart; I’m saying it because it’s true. “

She moved her hand from Alfina’s shoulder to her back where she started rubbing comforting circles. “Alfina, you make wonderful puffs and just because some boys didn’t like them doesn’t mean they’re bad. It just means it wasn’t the taste they wanted and that’s okay.”

Alfina sniffled and rubbed roughly at her eyes. She wasn't entirely sure that she could believe her mother. She had always believed her mother before, but now doubt entered the teen's mind.

'Let me guess, your mom says you make the best snacks around. I bet she just meant in your house.' Obnoxious teenage laughter echoed through the shop. 'I wouldn't feed this to the rats in my barn!' Other meanspirited words came from the group's mouths until they left the shop cackling.

Her cheeks flushed darker at the memory. "But everyone says they like them," she insisted again. Part of her knew her mother was right. Most of her, in fact, knew this was the case. Not every food was meant for every person. For some reason though, this particular disapproval was hitting her hard. "They were being so mean about it.. They must have absolutely hated the puffs." Puffy eyes rose again to Taijana. "They're gonna tell other people my food was bad. What if no one wants to shop there anymore because of it?"

Taijana furrowed her brow and turned to look at Alfina with concern. “Papa says he likes them and so does Caolan, your Auntie Trilanna, Uncle Dennet, Uncle Tyrios….” She trailed off a bit so she could just keep an eye on her. Was it really helping, having only family to back it up? Taijana wasn’t the best at pep talks, mostly because her own confidence was always naturally low, but when it came to her children Tai really tried. She hated seeing Alfina so distraught over something some stupid brats said.

“And that’s okay. I know it doesn’t seem like it is, but it is okay. I’m sorry that they were so cruel, but a few rotten berries doesn’t ruin the batch, does it? If you stop doing what you love because of something they did then they’ve won and then all those people who adore your puffs will never have another one.”

Alfina started to flinch away, wincing at the reassurances. More family... She trusted her family with all her heart, but even she knew that a white lie would occasionally come up for the sake of peace and encouragement. Was that all her cooking was? Just her family humoring her? Then what about the townsfolk? Would the whole town really go through the effort of humoring her over something they didn't actually enjoy?

The new assurances wormed their way into her brain to tug at what she already knew to be true. Not everyone was going to like what she made... just like she didn't always like what everyone else made. Her eyes rose again, searching her mother's face warily. She just wanted to stop.. but was Taijana right? What about those who did enjoy her food? What would they do if she stopped due to the opinions of a few?

"Maybe I'll just make them on the side again, instead of in the shop. ....if anyone bothers asking me about them," she murmured slowly, head ducking back down. The rational side of her was trying to kick its way back to the surface through the heavy emotions, but it was slow going. "I can find something else to do.." Oof, she hated the sound of that.. but could she really go back to baking? Surely not!

Oh sweetheart. Taijana shifted herself on the bed when Alfina started to sink back into it. Situations like this left the yaeli at a loss. She wanted so badly to shield her children from the world, but Alfina was so happy when she got out and now…”You could come work with your Auntie, Uncles and I.” Her family had always held a shop that not only processed meat, but tanned hides and sold pelts. Both of her siblings worked there, as well as their husbands, so it wouldn’t be stretch, but surely Alfina had bigger plans than that?

Or maybe working in something she hated would remind her of where her heart truly lay? “It won’t smell like warm bread in the mornings, though, and your dresses won’t wash out as easily as they will with flour.”

Ugh.... Alfina's insides squirmed with reluctance. She appreciated the offer, but working at the family's meat shop was less than ideal. However, it was that or go someplace where she didn't know anybody and risk failing again. At the least, if she messed up working with her family, they wouldn't stand there and mock her for it. It was the safer choice.

She wiped her nose on her sleeve and nodded. "If there's room for me, that would be nice," she murmured, trying hard to keep the distaste from her voice.

Her eyes closed to fight off the tears that embodied the self-betrayal in her heart. She could indeed smell the freshness of the baked goods on her clothes right then. The idea of scrubbing animal products off of her clothes each night made the back of her neck prickle. Using her hands to turn skins into tough leathers rather than change sticky dough into fluffy breads... "I know," she replied weakly, arms hugging the pillow tighter. "I'll have to get different clothes. Something more sturdy.. I guess.."

Taijana’s offer got the expected reaction. While none of her children seemed interested in the family business it was all she’d ever known. There was comfort in the familiar, even if it wasn’t as glamorous as some of the other occupations one could find in larger cities or even when traveling abroad. She’d expected them to take after their father, had planned for it even, so to have Alfina show interest in baking of all things…Well, it was a wholesome surprise.

Now she just had to keep that spark alive, no matter how small it may have been now.

“Y’know, I bet you could share your recipe with Mrs. Vysker. You remember her, don’t you? The merchant from Pajore who comes by for our furs. She always raves about the puffs she buys at bakery and how she looks forward to coming to our village just to get them.” It wasn’t a lie; the older woman really did enjoy her daughter’s work. Of course she already knew it was Alfina’s handiwork, but Tai didn’t have to say that part just yet.

“She might not come as often now, but at least then she’ll have something to eat on her trip back.”

Her mind spun along how her life was about to change. Working at a bakery was far from easy, but it had been so much fun. Having her passion be her work had made it.. not such work. Plus, she had learned so much in her short time there. Now, it was all going to be nothing more than a side hobby.

At least being hassled for messing up a side hobby shouldn't hurt as much.

She blinked a couple times to clear her eyes before she looked to her mother. "She does?" Her cheeks flushed slightly. She did know the woman. She could remember her coming into the shop and buying the puffs among other things for those trips she took. Her eyes dropped back down, a smile fighting for dominance over the deep frown on her lips. "She buys the puffs every time.." she murmured wistfully. "I could make some special for her. I'd like to do that." Even if most people decided to be honest finally and stop buying her puffs, there were actually a few out there that she was sure were honest when they said they liked them. Mrs. Vysker was one of them. She'd hate to let the woman down. Too bad they wouldn't be readily available anymore though...

“She does.” Taijana confirmed and moved her hips just enough to tuck a leg underneath herself on the bed. “I like she’d like that.” It was a start, and hopefully just enough to keep Alfina’s interests alive. Taijana was certain that once Alfina left and started working somewhere else there would be a riot to bring her back. Or at the very least the tannery would have a lot more customers simply trying to get her attention for other matters.

“You know, we keep talking about them and I think I want some now. Would you mind making some for Mama? And I could make some soup?”

Finally, the frown had slid away and a hesitant little smile decorated Alfina's lips. Her eyes shifted over to look to her mother, allowing herself to find comfort in that moment. Though she continued to despair over her loss, another part was already calculating out the ingredients she was going to need to make the special batch for Mrs. Vysker.

Cooking together? Her smile warmed a little further. Her mother wouldn't waste their precious ingredients on something she didn't like! Plus, they could help each other out at the same time. "I can do that. Soup would be really nice." She wiped at her face a couple times and sighed. It was still painful, but she could focus for this. Soup with puffs for desert. Yum! "Could you make the one with the chunky mushrooms?"

“Let me think about it…” Taijana trailed off, giving into a little ‘hmm’ before turning around and giving Alfina a kiss on her forehead. “Of course I will. Anything for my little sweetling.” She would pluck the stars from the sky if it would bring the light back to Alfina’s eyes. So long as she breathed she would do whatever it took to give her daughter everything she needed to succeed, and cooking her a good, hearty meal was as good a start as any.

Giving her a good pat, the slip of a woman moved up off the bed and smoothed out her apron. “Alright then, come on, we better get started. Can’t very well cook when we’re holed up here, can we?”

To her surprise, her mother's playful manner brought up a giggle from her chest. No matter what despair life might throw at her, Alfina knew her mother would be there for her. Just like now. Maybe this would be a good sign about the new job! Working with family would surely be enjoyable... even if the work itself wasn't.

With a bit more of a spring in her step, she stood and headed out of the room. "Even if we could cook in here, I don't want to get food all over my bed," she said, managing a bit of playfulness herself. Her cheeks flushed lightly, feeling at tug of uncertainty as she walked into the kitchen. The jabs of the boys tried holding her back from reaching the cabinets.. but she pushed through. No one else would be getting the puffs, after all. Just herself and her mother, and Mrs. Vysker. Only the people she could be confident enough would honestly enjoy the food.

Layering the flaky pastry was time consuming and required a gentle hand. It didn't take long for Alfina to fall into that familiar rhythm and focus on her work, practically forgetting everything else around her with a small smile on her lips.
