Tama had messaged Albite almost immediately. Faustite had said to find a senshi. He never mentioned he couldn’t just call the general’s husband. The details had been to meet at the entry to the Hall of Shadows in the Castle. He knew he wouldn’t have to convince the senshi too much to come to the Rift. For some reason, the man seemed to have a death wish. Well, he was married to Faustite. “Cat form or human form?” Tama paced in their meeting spot as he waited for the eternal senshi, talking to himself. “Which will make me less of a target?”He yowled. “Why did it have to be the Rift?”☆

Anguished echo's of yowling fur-beans made Albite reminisce on the first time he'd come down to the Rift to dispose of an oopsidental accident in the form of a corpse, and the second time he'd come down to see the Scar proper, excitedly playing at bait so those making an arduous climb up the cliffs could have it a bit easier at the top -- and then -- He hummed a nameless tune that resembled an offkey rendition of 'everybody wants to be a cat', he had cats on the brain more often then not, what with his Hayby working towards becoming the realest boy with thumbs. It'd made him extra eager to agree to come see Tama -- he didn't have the slightest inkling of what the suave bob wanted, nor how he planned to get past the Hall of Shadows and into the Rift proper without having an agent or higher up around, but!! Those were problems for an Albite of minutes from now -- the Albite of the present? Saw the source of the yowl and made for it with a run, "TAMA!!" "Sup sweet-fluff, Albite, Eternal of Bait at your service," the words offered with a bow and mockery of subservience, his smile all tease, all play. Because he loved Tama as fiercely as the rest of his team, and there was little he wouldn't do for him in the name of being helpful, "so who we goin with? Cause, uh, otherwise? This is gonna be the worlds shortest mission into the Rift." and he would've been as likely to flip off the lingering wretches of shadow and spite beyond the distant glass, n haul Tama off for coffee n treats soon as he would've been willing to walk right in n die. Well, less willing to become a snack, more willing to do the flipping of birds. Figured he could probably talk Tama into a coffee over an empty casket funeral if it came down to it!

Tama was happy to see the senshi, even if he was a bit loud for his tastes. They seriously didn’t need to give the youma any heads up there was a meal about to just walk in. “I’m glad you’re ready to be the bait.” Tama hopped on Albite’s shoulder. He could be a good shoulder-fluff of a cat when he wanted to be. He supposed that solved the issue of ‘cat form or human form’. “But I have a feeling the person accompanying us will make sure you’re not made into a snack. Not so sure he’ll have the same reservations about me. That’s why I’ll stay close to you.”☆

Next Monday arrived sooner than he would have liked. He made a promise, however, and Tama would never let him forget it — would likely bring it up with the Queen if Faustite tried to dip out on him.
Thus, it was with mild irritation and excessive reticense that he descended from the level of the Generals' offices, to the Captains', to the Lieutenants' small gathering areas, and finally the base floor of the Citadel proper with the intent of tracking down the wily Mauvian. As he approached the source of the auric energy, however, he found that the creme-colored furbag found himself and oversized armchair on which to lounge, and Faustite squinted at him as he rounded the banister.
Faustite kept his words to himself until he was within conversational distance of the pair. He gestured to Albite as he stared up at Tama. "You couldn't have picked anyone else?" He felt a lukewarm grimace coming on.
Yes, Albite was easily suckered into going to the Rift. Yes, Albite was stupid enough to play bait for forces he couldn't hope to conquer. Yes, Albite had a critical problem with the idea of self-preservation. But that didn't mean that Faustite wanted to throw his boy's life away for the chance for Tama to look at the Sistine Chapel Ceiling version of the Rift's own starmap.
"I ******** hate you," he informed the cat matter-of-factly.
"And you're a ******** idiot," he elaborated as he pointed at his husband. "Come on."

"Ya gotta be ready for everything round here Tama," nonchalant as always, because he'd never minded his niche place in view of the greater dynamics at play. Being bait was just sometimes how things worked, though it helped that he had a hefty amount of bravado to boost his view of potentially surviving whatever could've been thrown at him. The same kinda joy that made him happy to have the cat tucked away on his shoulder; easy to hide, easy to pet. Albite offered a large hand for free scritches after adjusting the heft of his loc's accordingly; he'd leave it long n uncut this time. A way to add extra layers of protection between his dainty passenger and the hungry world they were gonna stroll on into, "besides -- 'meat shield' is my middle name, ah, one of 'em at least." He heard the telltale sizzle before he felt the burgeoning chaotic aura, spun to meet it with a massive smile. " Fireb--" oop, his boy was angry!! Yet? With the mystery guest revealed, Albite could only swoon like a love smitten puppy, before eagerly falling to heel. Even at the chastisement, he was undeterred, "a fool in love, and you know I like going to the Rift with you! "

“I could have chosen someone else. ” Tama said as he buried his body into the protective curtain of Albite’s hair. “But, really, who would have been a better choice for you? Do you not like seeing this one?”He played because he could. Being on Albite’s shoulder felt like the best protective he was going to get — both from Faustite and any hungry youma they met in the Rift. “See. He likes going to the Rift with you. He’s absolutely smitten to go on this journey with you. Not my fault if you hate what’s good for you.”☆

"Not the Rift that's the problem," Faustite warned his boy. He walked ahead, then paused. Flustered with himself, he huffed as he turned around, backtracked to his boy, and took up his hand. Then he continued for the yawning double doors to the Hall of Shadows.
"If I'm not holding your hand, then I'm ******** smacking that furry rat off your shoulder," he seethed. Looking ahead, he added, "Could've used someone a little more disposable, Tama. Haven't been to that place since it was repaired. Don't know what's waiting inside — or what it'll do to a senshi walking into it." Which was why he didn't want to waste a perfectly good boy, one that he even married on a questionable venture into the Rift.
And, he supposed, he couldn't just say '******** the cat, too' at this point. But that was a minor annoyance compared to the egregious wad of anxiety that festered in his grate at the prospect of something happening to the happy-go-stupid boy in his grip.
"… Promise me you won't listen to whatever the building tells you to do." He shot Albite an exasperated look. There was no guarantee that anything would happen, to either of the three of them, but Tama had escalated a moderately stressful journey into an extremely nerve-wracking one with the inclusion of a boy he wasn't willing to sacrifice. Even as he reminded himself ad nauseam that everything would be fine, his stupid husband wouldn't get himself killed or eaten or ascended, and they would return no worse for wear, he didn't believe any of it.
Then Faustite reminded himself that he only had to look unbothered, if only to convince the creatures in the walls that he was well in control of his entourage. With a smoky huff, he set his jaw and marched the other two into the Hall.

"Awwhh, Ei" Albites face was on fire, hot with a wide smile, because Faustite was holding his hand -- on the way into the Rift even!!! Showed those shadowy ******** what for -- He didn't even care for the why of it all, just curled his fingers pleasantly and sought the backs of those sharp knuckles with a brief kiss. The most tentative little brush of affection before he opened his mouth to offer something like hope--
"I love that you worry bout me Firebrand, I've gotten a bit tankier as an Eternal though--probably tastier too, but!! I've got Cerbs to back me up if I call, n a thought-locker fulla trinkets that might help me down there; worse comes to worse? M'real good at dusting things. Practice allll the time even...." he'd amassed some treasures over time, youmafying-pendants, and soothing-bells, and slightly more armored things than that-- sometimes being extra of service to a certain smiling salesman had it's perks. Same as being of service to a Sovereign or two. To his Husband. He'd have to get a fanny pack at some point, or maybe a cool-a** satchel! Something more physically accessible than the quick thought it took to snare things outta subspace, "....and I don't just mean in those heels you like."
He could make promises to keep though, nodding even as he returned Faustites plea-filled gaze with sincerity, because talking walls were the last ******** thing he wanted to listen to!! Haunted places could get absolutely, totally, railed by a burning semi, for all he cared to ******** around with them.
"I'll only listen to you down here, kay? No talking to strange eels, or taking candy from trees. I won't even ride off any of those flesh balloons with the limbs....or the floaty ones, either...Besides? Who better to have you n Tama's backs than someone who cares about you guys! M'pretty sure Alkmene would cry a single tear if his favorite fur-muff got all swallowed up down here."
That too was a worry, but the tickle of Tamas settling weight behind his neck and across his shoulders eased that some, it was good to have the cat where he could keep track of him, physically. It was good to have his boy in hand -- like --- like going on a picnic!
N yeah, it wasn't the best area to go picnicking in! But Albite didn't believe them the sorts to be easily trifled with either.

“Hrm. You failed to mention to bring a disposable senshi.” Tama huffed. With the way Faustite was getting all hands-holdy with Albite, he knew his choice of perch was perfect. But Faustite did seem legitimately worried and that was a look the Mauvian had not seen before in the general. Was he concerned with what was in the Hall of Shadows? Certainly, nothing would be a threat to him there. He was an agent of the Negaverse and a high-ranking one, too. Certainly no youma would bother him there. It was his own fur he had to worry about and certainly knew Faustite wouldn’t bat an eye if he got eaten by a youma. All the more reason to have Albite. “See? He cares about both of us. And he even promises to listen to you.”From what, though, Tama wondered. He knew full well that youma weren’t keen on senshi. Even less so on cats. But what could have a general concerned? ☆

Faustite rolled his eyes while his husband went on with empty assurances, counted them right off his fingers until he couldn't count any higher, all while blissfully missing the greater issue. "Not the Rift that concerns me." The shadowy beings they passed as he led the three down? Wall decor, as far as he was concerned anymore. They ceased to be a problem when he truly became comfortable as a General.
If Albite had made an innuendo, Faustite missed it by the width of the Rift. His thoughts were on the uncountable unknowns that they would face, and thus he lapsed into silence.
Once they descended the several flights of stairs to bring them to the entrance of the Rift, Faustite felt a margin better for breathing the strange, ozone-charged air. It felt more familiar to him — more invigorating. The clamor of creatures at a great distance served as a backdrop to his thoughts and a dampener for his tendency to fixate on that which he couldn't ascertain. While Faustite never truly felt at ease here, he thought the Rift served as some kind of abusive, ******** up, dilapidated, yet well-loved home. At least, it was the one home that wouldn't collapse under the weight of his poor decisions.
Still, he hadn't relinquished Albite's hand. His had grown somewhat clammy against Albite's cool, dry skin. "Hope that favorite fur-muff doesn't get you killed. Or worse." He shot a warning glance at the cat, in case he got ideas for how to make that starmap more interesting.
He responded to Tama as he began the long descent to the craggy landscape of the Rift proper. "Meant to look into the tower. Ran out of time for that, though. Flying blind doesn't sit well with me — seen what that tower can do.
"Isn't far, assuming it didn't migrate. Tell you about it while we walk." Faustite squeezed his boy's hand wordlessly.
"First mission as a General was to come out here and fix a tower. Sovereigns came out, too. Sent us looking for gears — something to fix a mechanism inside the tower. Seemed like it was on Alkaid to fix it, but she sent us away. The tower we're visiting — it makes Ascended Generals, like Alkaid, out of senshi like Albite. Haven't seen or heard of it getting used since the day we fixed it, though."

"I really do," soft so he could listen while the slow realization that Faustite wasn't worried about the him in relation to the Rift sunk in-- His boys concern had nothing to do with the Rift. He was just worried about 'Him', in general, maybe? Or because of the Tower -- or -- or just because he loved him...
The obvious to him now show of affection was still a tough thing to wrap his mind around. All the little nuanced things, how he felt warm throughout once he picked up on it. Albite could only think of all the times before when he'd expressed that same sort of worry so boldly for his boy; an arrogant, thrashing, child screaming about it for all the world to hear. Always grasping after his husbands cape-tails, or finding some too hot to touch bit to cling too. In all his brashness he'd missed the part where Faustite had grown comfortable holding his hand, or taking a hug, or saying he was worried about him, direct yet quiet.
He cast his boy a fond look, all soft blinks and a calloused thumb brushing over clammy joints, brows scrunched in curiosity. He'd never heard of a Senshi becoming a General before -- or no -- Nembus had asked him once if he'd sought ascension, like it was a goal or something? He thought he'd told her he wasn't a Buddhist -- or something to that similar affect, and then gone on about stars, and his asteroid, and peopling, and her best pigeon photographs from the park.....
He hadn't thought the word since.
"Wait -- there's a tower for Senshi, in the Rift? Like....Senshi can become Generals?!" incredulous with awe, and it all sounded very strange indeed! Almost like finding an ice-cream shop at the center of hell. He was sure all the treats were melted into boiling soup, and the flavors made of roach-marmalade and cricket-feelers, but?! The fact that such a thing existed at all! "S'it like the cat tower at the citadel? I always forget that there was Earth s**t down here before, umh, like kingdom things?" Course all he knew about that was a letter fulla symbols he couldn't marginally decipher; he'd only gotten halfway through waiving at both Aqua and Jet as an excuse to get brought down into the Rift more often..something about nettles or whatever....
The backdrop of their surroundings existed at his periphery, a dull buzz of things he paid little attention to; long since had the nascent unease of knowing he was somewhere he did not belong ceased to bother him. His skin didn't crawl like it'd used to, his hackles didn't get up unless something in the distance stared a bit too long. His whole focus was on his beloved just then, blazing a trail with fires that kept the weaker pests off -- speaking enticing new words -- cause the ******** was ascension that only one Senshi'd ever done it? Maybe Alkaid was just extra cool.

The fur-muff knew better than to leave Albite if he wanted to live and that also meant keeping the senshi alive as well. “Ascension?” Tama perked up. Their descent into the Rift with its moving shadows and eerie sounds and who knows what else lurking in the corner of his vision had keep the cat silent for most of the time, merely listening to Faustite as he told the tale. There had been only one sentence that briefly mentioned ascension in all the written material he had found about corrupt senshi in the manual and he had not meet any in the time he had been in the Negaverse. ☆

Faustite paused only to spare a quizzical look at Albite, then continued down their winding, ill-trodden path into the more austere portions of the Rift. Perhaps an explanation would eat away the time between here and there, and pause the growing group of youma that tailed them distantly. Maybe it wouldn't, but reminiscing diverted his thoughts from what was to come.
"Ran a youma seminar when I was a Captain. Middling success, but it caught the attention of a senshi I'd never seen. Name was Alkaid, and she looked like cracked porcelain. There was a deadness to her eyes. She'd found the seminar lacking.
"Noticed she had a translucent cape. Pauldrons like an esteemed General. Learned that she was an Ascended Senshi, sometimes called Ascendant Generals." Faustite dropped down a craggy cliff face, platform by platform, until he waited thirty feet below the precipice. He waited, gaze skyward, while the pair caught up.
"Met her again when I was a new General. She wanted to find the place we're visiting. Noticed that, in the Rift, youma didn't bother her. Didn't think much of her. Sometimes, was like she was never there. But, when she was hit, her body fractured — could feel the energy leaking out. Whatever happened to her, she was more a magical automaton than a person. Closer to a youma, but in a way that starseed tampering couldn't instigate.
"When we repaired the place she sought, we learned it could make more senshi like her. Cracked ones who could command youma, who bleed energy when hurt.
"Couldn't learn any more than that. She's gone now, don't know where. Might be dead." He couldn't imagine anything spun together with petrified skin and chaotic energy could last forever. Youma didn't either — eventually, they each lost their power and faded away. Perhaps the same happened to her, happened to Haumea after following her.
"There." Faustite pointed up to a tower perched at the end of a lengthy incline. "Find your star map inside, Tama."

“Ascendant General?” Another term he had only ever seen once and in passing. Tama was one to dig deep in his reading, but it seems Faustite was a better source than anything the Mauvian had dug up in all his searching. He’d spent his first six months here rummaging through every written source he could find in Negaspace. But it seemed that he would have spent his time just as well questioning the general. Had he know Faustite was such a wellspring of information, he would have spent more time with his flame-highness. “Well, it’s good to know someone had found a way to make youma leave senshi alone. Although if the only one who could is dead now, maybe that’s not such a good sign?”As he eyed the other youma that followed them even with an eternal senshi and a general, he was loosing hope in his youma repellant making aspirations. At least, he would have this star map dreams fulfilled. “Anything else we should know before heading in there?”He wanted to be prepared. ☆

Albite tuned in, turned his listening ears to a ten even as he carefully carried Tama across the terrain, packed pack mule over and down, following after the soft hiss-crackle of Faustite relaying something so entirely new-- exciting -- terrifying ---
A Senshi that wasn't a Senshi anymore? No -- A Senshi that wasn't a Human anymore. He wondered what drove her to it even more than he wondered about what her powers must've been like, or if the youma listened to her real good because she got a badass cape outta the whole deal.
He wondered if it was worth it, whatever it'd cost her to obtain *that*....
"Just the one question...did she get a sword? Or maybe a shield or...Oh-cool - it's a scoobydoo tower!" He could see why Faustite thought the thing might talk! It looked haunted as ********, and old, and -- honestly like a twisted death-trap fulla treasure he'd have to lose a limb to obtain properly, or maybe manage some ritual sacrifice stuff?
"We'll be fine Tama! Don't talk to the whispers in the walls, don't pull any starseeds -- avoid levers...you always avoid levers in towers..that's like, haunted old tower's one-oh-one!" his thoughts of Alkaids likeness fleeting as he swept by Faustite with giddiness in every excitable step towards the incline.
