Noelani loved how colorful and vibrant everything was in Haukea. The hybrid had taken time since the fire to explore the nearby village and happened to overhear some complaints about a strange creature that had been cutting through a particular area of the reef that weeks ago had been one of the nicest spots to visit because of how peaceful the nearby mangrove was. Apparently something known as a kapu had taken residence there and was being a menace? Noelani wasn’t much of a fighter, but she did know that she couldn’t stand seeing others suffer and so she had taken a couple of nets and her gathering gear for when she went diving to see if she could set up a trap for the creature.

Nanami was exploring the world now that she had left home and was out to see whatever adventures she could find. So of course whenever a kapu was on a rampage near a little village in Haukea, the young mage volunteered her services to capture the thing. She was confident in her own abilities but also worried about the stranger who she had just spotted around the mangrove, the dark blue and gray skin a contrast to the brightly colored surroundings. “He-hello?” Nanami frowned and leaned forward, her staff clutched in her hands. “It’s dangerous out here, miss!” She called out as she took in the foreigner’s strange appearance. Truly she had never seen anyone before that looked like that!

Nanami was exploring the world now that she had left home and was out to see whatever adventures she could find. Noelani nearly jumped out of her skin, the treasure hunter twisting around to look about the field of gently swaying seagrass, the bright green and blues almost blurring together before disappearing into the coral colored sands. A kapu couldn’t speak, right? Thankfully Noelani heard words and found a sigh of relief leaving her as she realized it was a Kahi speaking. “Is it?” She called back with a small smile. “I had the feeling since others were talking about a kapu roaming the waters here.”

“Oh!” Nanami blinked in surprise before letting out a laugh. “I’m so sorry!” She apologized as she came closer to the foreigner, surprised by her taller appearance. The few earthlings she had seen around the docks were usually shorter and none had antennae before! Still, the foreigner definitely was not from around here even if she was the strangest earthling that Nanami had ever seen. “I didn’t think you knew about the kapu since you…seemed out of place.” Her cheeks darkened at the admission. “Even so…if you knew about the kapu then why come to this area?”

“To help.” Noelani offered with a grin. “I know that I’m not from these waters but I felt like I should help out. I have some action experience and I’m good at navigating deep waters.” Even if she was not like the Kahi, the diver had been trained to swim and to fight underwater by her family members who were skilled at gathering treasure from far below the ocean surface. “Admittedly I don’t know much about the kapu other than to avoid their teeth and that they can be scary fast…hence why I thought I would try nets to trap it instead of direct confrontation.”

“I see.” Nanami smiled. “I came out here to help out as well.” It was part of her training, to become a strong adventurer that saved others in need, and so she could not resist the opportunity to fight a kapu and preserve peace. “As for some facts…the kapu can grow to almost our size and are super agile in the water because of how sleek they are. It’s their mouths that you truly have to be careful of because they have razor sharp teeth that stick out all over like razor blades.” She glanced around and shook her head. “They also are good at camouflaging themselves because their natural stripes blend in with these grasses so we should be careful.” A slight flush decorated her cheeks again as Nanami realized she had quoted facts almost like a textbook, a common habit of hers.

Instead of judging the other girl for presenting so much information, Noelani found herself intrigued by it all. “I see! No wonder they were so quick to warn me about simply wandering into this area.” She had been clutching a dagger this whole time, her gaze alert and her antenna ready to sense any vibrations in the area which was why she had nearly jumped as Nanami approached. “So if I set down some traps, do you think it could work?” Or would she have to change tactics? It seemed like the kapu was a nasty creature indeed and Noelani did not like the idea of fighting it directly.

“Perhaps.” Another smile crossed Nanami’s lips as she realized the foreigner was actually listening to her information. “I actually brought some herbs that we could drug some meat with. That hopefully will get the kapu drowsy enough that a net could work.” They could lure it into a spot, get it sleepy and then lash its mouth closed before bringing it back to the village or relocating it somewhere further out in the wilds. The very idea made her expression brighten since she much preferred the idea of relocating to simply slaughtering the beast that was just trying to exist.

“Oh! That would be great! Should we work together then?” Noelani asked, her own expression brightening as she pondered the idea. “I have some fish that I was carrying around just in case, but the sleeping herbs would be a great addition. If the creature isn’t sleeping then I doubt my nets will do much for trapping it with those teeth.” As she spoke she was already digging through her satchel and scattering the contents out on a large rock that jutted out of the grasses for Nanami to inspect.

“I think it’s a good plan.” Nanami nodded as she helped to separate the fish, the kawena pouring out an herbal mixture onto the fish and taking a moment to make certain the fishy smell overpowered the bitterness of the herbs. “Alright. Let’s set up your nets along the edges of the mangrove by the water and wait from the trees. If it takes the bait we’ll hear these bells chiming.” She tied bells to the netting since she knew that the kapu would try to tug the meat into the deeper waters with it.

“Perfect!” Noelani worked quickly, her years of working with knots and netting obvious as she didn’t hesitate to tie everything together with precision. “There.” The pair nodded to each other and Noelani went left while she saw Nanami going right. After making certain to attach the net to a thick tree that grew along the water’s edge, Noelani carefully and quietly walked backwards to a tree that was in the middle and looked for Nanami. “I’m good, are you?”

Nanami quietly worked on her part of the trap, securing the net with an additional rock before venturing back to the tree where she spotted the foreigner. “It’s all set.” She nodded before starting up the tree, reaching down a hand to help the other girl up after her. “Now we wait.” Nanami smiled towards the foreigner and scooted over to make certain that there was plenty of room for her. “Thank you for helping out with the kapu today.”

“You’re welcome.” Noelani settled next to the Kahi and surveyed the water’s edge for any ripples before glancing back to her companion. “I’m Noelani by the way.” She offered with a small smile. “Once we get the kapu do you plan on taking it back to the village or something else?” She had noticed the Kahi had some strange leather straps prepared as if she were going to tie the creature down or something like that. Was she not planning on simply killing it like most hunters? Either way it didn’t matter to Noelani as long as she knew that the village was safe from a rampaging beast.

“Nanami.” The kawena nodded politely. “It’s nice to meet you, Noelani.” She glanced down towards the water’s edge and frowned at the question. “I think I’ll relocate it. I can use some magic to get the current to carry it a few miles upriver which should keep it far enough away from the village. I’ll leave local hunters with the herbs and then they can decide what to do if it needs to be caught once more.” Her words carried off though as the chiming of bells caught her attention. It looked like the kapu had fallen for their trap! Nanami smirked before heading down from the tree with Noelani following her. They would tie up the kapu while it dozed and then when it woke up hopefully the creature would be happy with its new environment and stay far away from any other villages!
