Autumn had settled over the land and there was a bite to the air which Zira was not accustomed with. The girl shivered under her shawl, the woven wool the only thing keeping her body warm as she climbed up onto a wagon after her father. They had taken a rare journey to visit some of his earthling family, something he often did on his own to retrieve special herbs and medicines for his father back in Jahaur since the earthling often relied upon them as a healer, and Zira was excited to be going here again since it had been a couple of years. However when she had heard that they were helping with the harvest she had simply been imagining some great hunts and a huge feast afterwards, not a bitter cold wind nipping at her nose as they rode along with others on the back of a wagon towards some fields. This was her first introduction to Sauti in autumn since they usually always visited in spring or summer, not during the colder seasons, and she found herself shivering at the change from the humid warmth of Jahaur.

“Are we almost there?”

Verosh studied the familiar golden landscape with a thoughtful frown. While he had spent his childhood in Sauti it still felt weird to see how autumn changed the landscape in comparison to Jahaur which seemed to always be in the same season while the outside countries constantly shifted as the years progressed. “Almost.” He murmured to Zira, glancing at her with a soft chuckle leaving his lips. He had warned his daughter that it would be colder since it was autumn but she was determined to tag along with him anyway. Now she was bundled up in a warm scarf with more clothing that she was accustomed to wearing, the girl constantly tugging at the long sleeves of a sweater that covered her wrists. “When we get there you’ll have to help with cutting the wheat. Do you think you can manage?”

Zira nodded, her lips pressed in determination as she fidgeted with the strange sweater. “I can handle it.” She promised before glancing back to her father, the teen chewing at her bottom lip for a moment before finally asking. “But just say I don’t know how to harvest wheat. Do we just cut it with a dagger or something?” Living in the jungle she had simply helped gather nuts and berries that grew nearby, but never dealt with crops before. They had a little plot near the smithy for some berry bushes and some vegetables that grew on the vines but mostly her family gathered from the wilderness, hunting and then trading in town for even more food and supplies. It helped that her mother was a blacksmith so her work provided for a lot of things while her father ran errands and did special hunting missions to fill in whatever else the family needed. This whole concept of a harvest festival in Sauti was definitely foreign to the girl and she honestly was curious to see how it would all play out.

“Not exactly.” Verosh smiled as he watched the fields coming closer, the wagon going up and down over a few bumps as they crossed further into the valley where his family lived. Some of his cousins still preferred to wander as traders while others had set up here because it was a good spot for growing some crops with a stream cutting across the back of a valley and feeding into a forest full of prey for hunting. “You used a curved tool called a sickle and you have to cut the top of the wheat off in a certain way, I’ll show you.”

“I see.” Zira nodded again as she listened to her father’s explanation, the teen shifting as the wagon bumped over a few more awkward spots before finally coming to a stop. “So once the wheat is cut we eat it?” She asked with some confusion. She truly never baked and always relied upon the nearby baker in Jahaur or her grandparents to provide baked goods for the family. Her father was good at roasting meats, but other than that….well at least he tried! She tried not to reveal her thoughts, especially since he could be a bit prickly about his flaws, and so Zira simply scooted towards the edge of the wagon so that she could jump off. Touching the ground with her own feet felt strange after nearly an hour of riding in a wagon so Zira actually almost tumbled backwards before reaching out to grab the side of the wagon for support.”Whoops!”

“You okay?” Verosh jumped off of the wagon after Zira, the hybrid offering her support as he waited for her to gain her bearings. “We’ve been sitting for a while so you should have taken it slower.” He advised with a slight frown. She was always reckless like that, no matter how many times he chastised her, and Verosh wondered when she would ever learn to slow down. Verosh took a few steps away from Zira before reaching for his own belongings, swinging his bag over his shoulder and then turning to survey the fields. “Also, we don’t simply eat freshly cut wheat. The others will grind it into flour and can show you the process once we harvest everything from the field.”

“I’m fine.” Zira pouted towards her father before straightening up and grabbing her own belongings from the wagon. Giving a small wave to the Sautian man who had helped them into the valley, the teen watched as he moved the wagon further down the path towards the small village sitting there. If one could call it a village since it only looked like ten to maybe fifteen houses, some living in homes that looked more like long tents with wooden frames and cloth covers with their family so that they could relocate easily if they decided to travel again, and then there was a small general store for traders to look into along with shared storage for harvest goods and anyone who kept meat and the like in other various sheds scattered around the homes. Zira vaguely remembered that much from her last trip here, her gaze lighting up as she spotted the small house owned by her father’s cousin and his wife. “Milly and Trel should be in the fields already, right? I guess I’ll see how this whole flour process works once we get this wheat gathered. I just hope they don’t expect me to bake anything!” She teased with a grin towards Verosh, bouncing forward as she continued with her belongings into the fields.

“They should be! Just be careful!” Verosh yelled after his daughter, a rare chuckle escaping his own lips at her playful antics. It was insane to see how the prickly man was actually warm-hearted towards his children, especially Zira who always had a bright personality and smile for everyone. Such a reaction even had his own cousin blinking in surprise as he greeted the pair by the edge of the wheatfields, the golden stalks swaying gently behind him and reminding the pair of his own golden hair and tan skin. “Zira! Ash!”

“Trel!” Zira let out a laugh as she collided with the earthling man. “Long time no see!” She squeezed tightly before taking a step back so that he could look over her. Unlike Zira the man had a petite frame, his head only coming up towards Verosh’s shoulders while he stood eye to eye with Zira for the time being. But he did have the same blue eyes as Verosh and the same golden hair that was tied back into a short ponytail.

“Well last time I saw you I could swing you around, but with the way you’re growing I might get picked up soon instead!” The earthling teased as he glanced between the pair, recognizing how much shorter he was than those who shared Aishan heritage. Zira used to be shorter than him but now she was his height and still growing, something that she delighted in. The more she grew then the stronger she was so that she could become an Aishan warrior like her father! At least that was her logic even though she knew technically height didn’t always change her own strength. But it was nice to see that she could walk alongside some of the other pure Aishans without needing to tilt her head all the way back to see their faces.

“Maybe I will swing you around next time.” Zira found herself teasing with a grin before glancing around again. “No Milly?”

“Trel.” Verosh nodded his greeting as he watched his daughter interact with his cousin. “Is Milly, alright?” He found himself asking, a rare hint of concern showing from the normally reserved hybrid. Already he saw several earthlings walking across the fields and Verosh was relieved to see that the fields seemed to be thriving here in the valley. He remembered when his family first settled here when he was only a youngling and the surrounding area had just been loose rocks and dirt. After lots of hard work the group of earthlings had turned it into an area that could actually hold and produce crops, the families learning how to rotate their crops so that the soil could grow richer over the years with a little extra help from those who knew magic. Of course his family had relocated to Jahaur when he was a teen so he only had a few years here, but the memories he held were nice until the reality of his place as a hybrid had slapped him in the face whenever he tried to join the ranks of Sisters in Jahaur. Verosh was thankful for the trials though since he felt like they made him stronger, the weak child from Sauti was no more save for in the affection that he held towards his family that still lived here.

Zira waited nervously by her father’s side as she tried to read Trel’s expression. “She’s fine, right?” She asked again, trying not to twist her hands in that habit since it revealed how nervous she truly felt. What if Milly was sick or worse? Her heart would break! Milly was such a kind woman who always worked hard to make Zira and Verosh feel welcome whenever they visited.

After a moment Trel nodded. “She’s alright, just in a bit of a delicate state right now.” He finally admitted with a sheepish smile. “Seems like we may be having a youngling running around next harvest after all.” He chuckled. “So she’s been stuck at home, preparing the kitchen for whatever she can handle since the healer said no drastic work when she’s gotta take care of herself and the baby.”

“A child?” Verosh found himself smiling as he reached out to pat his cousin’s shoulder in congratulations. “I know you’ve been trying for years, so I’m happy that you’ve been blessed.” Trel and Melly had always wanted a child but Melly hadn’t been able to carry a child easily, his own father had wanted to come visit despite his inability to walk far distances with the lame leg but could only send herbs over the last couple of years to help. “I’ll let father know when I go back to Jahaur. He’ll want to try and make it next year to see for himself.” Verosh straightened his shoulders and placed his belongings in a safe spot with other tools before grabbing a sickle and an empty basket. “We should try to hurry then with this gathering so that we can catch up with each other.”

“I mean we can always talk in the fields.” Trel replied with a happy grin, following his cousin’s lead to grab tools and a basket. “For Zira.” He gestured towards his younger cousin. “We’ll show you how to hold the wheat and gather it properly with the sickle. Once we’re done we can bring it back and others will grind it into flour and we should have plenty to eat by tomorrow evening. It’ll be a grand event with lots of ale and whatever else we have since there’s been plenty of crops and everything this season.”

Zira was beaming as she grabbed the tools from Trel and started following her father and cousin into the fields. “That sounds like a great plan.” She agreed as she passed others, watching how they harvested the grains before raising the sickle to try for herself. “Like this?” She asked glancing between her family members, her desire to learn bringing a new energy to the previously tired girl. Traveling had taken a lot out of her and she knew that she would be sleeping soundly tonight, but for the moment she was prepared to help with whatever she could this harvest so that she could see Milly and enjoy a feast tomorrow!

“Almost.” Verosh raised his sickle and went to a stalk of wheat next to Zira so that he could demonstrate. “You want a slight angle to help make the cut. It’s swifter and once you grow accustomed to it you can fill up a basket quickly.” He advised with a small smile, the hybrid watching his daughter a few moments more to make certain she was doing okay before starting on his own basket. Verosh was prone to getting caught up in the moment and he quickly started filling up basket after basket while chatting with his cousin and daughter. So far it seemed like this had been another successful harvest indeed and he was glad that he could come visit and share the moment with his family.
