"Would you leave me alone?!"
Finn snarled and pushed back on a large, fuzzy face only to have that face push back. The mammu calf was apparently an orphan that had been taken in after it's mother was killed by hunters, and since it's ears had been damaged in the attack it wasn't likely to be released into the wild. As such the little fuzzy thing had taken to earthlings fairly well after some work, and much to his displeasure, Finn.
Despite the magical healing they'd received upon their arrival at the Sanctuary, Finn was still experiencing some soreness. He was cleared to get out and help with chores, but too much lifting left his side aching. Still, it was better than being stuck around Katori's family for long so he'd agreed to help with...harvest things? Whatever the hell that was.
The calf laid it's trunk over his shoulder and tugged him back toward it, and even when Finn tossed it's trunk off him in a huff it just made a noise that was suspiciously like a laugh.

"He's really taking a liking to you." Teased Katori as she peered around the corner. While things still weren't completely stable for the pair, Katori's days had been busy with healing and keeping an eye on Finn while he recovered from their previous encounter with the enragead chiavi. She knew that Finn wasn't completely comfortable with her family, but she was honestly thankful to be in a familiar place surroudned by familiar faces while they rested up and recovered their strength. The sanctuary was the same as she had left it over a year ago, the stone manor suprirsingly more empty than usual with so many of the family still out and about on their own travels. Her mother was around thankfully and had helepd patch up their wounds before calling in a more experienced 'earthling' healer for them from the nearby village. Katori had simply taken to her room the first day or so when they arrived and only remembered falling into the bed and passing out for a solid day before waking up to help out more and see what was going on with Finn.
It amused her to see him dealing with the various animals like the mammu calf and it was actually adorable to see how the little calf trailed along after the frustrated Yaeli. As long as he is doing well enough to snarl at it. She realized with relief since Finn was actually walking around now and not half-alive like he had been when they first arrived covered in those injuries. At least they had arrived before the winter months which gave them time with the autumn harvest still in full session around them. While Finn had offered to help harvest things to get away from the others, Katori had offered to tag along after him simply to help burn some of the pent up energy that had been growing over the last few days. She felt both restless and concerned, which resulted in her appearance behind Finn today with her short bobbed hair tucked back behind a bandanna and a pair of woven baskets on either arm.
"If he persists in following you maybe I can tie some small baskets on either side for him to carry some apples with us." Katori mused with a small grin as she studied the mamu, her arms shifting slightly to reveal some lingering bandages under her sleeves even as she kept the woven baskets hanging from each one. Her family hadn't wanted them in the deeper fields so they would be helping gather apples from the nearby orchard, something that would allow them to both get some fresh air and hopefully not strain their healing bodies too much. Katori was perfectly fine with that since she knew that also meant they could make some fresh cider soon which was one of her favorite autumn drinks.

When the calf tucked his trunk around his torso and gave a squeeze, a lingering pain flared up. Finn's immediate reaction was to hiss, tense up and push the calf away. There was heat surrounding his hands - an unconscious reaction, one he hadn't even been aware of - but one that likely gave a warning to the little one. He pressed a hand to his side as the calf gave a little mournful whine and reaching out for his ponytail instead. The yaeli gave it a firm scowl before turning to Katori.
"I don't think he's going away anytime soon so you might as well." To prove his point Finn took a few steps forward, and the calf followed, it's trunk calmly holding onto his ponytail like it's mother's tail. "You won't screw up your arms that way either." He'd seen the way her family had looked at them when they arrived. In all honesty Finn hadn't expected to be taken in as he had been. Rather, he'd expected accusations and a firm kick at the door. Still, he'd been taken to a bed and healed of all things.

Katori's lips pressed into a tight line of concern until she realized that the calf was mostly safe despite how he persisted around Finn, obviously annoying the Yaeli. A small smile did cross her lips as Finn demonstrated his point and Katori couldn't help the little bubble of laughter that tried to escape her lips, the hybrid having to quickly turn and retreive a pair of baskets to hide her delight at the scene. "That's...fair." She mused eventually her mood somewhat dampened by the reminder of her arms, the bandages still there along with the few that crossed over her upper back and chest since healing would take time with such deep wounds. At least we made it out alive. What truly twisted her gut was the memory of the lost mother and the chicks left behind. Thankfully her family's sanctuary was plenty big enough to hold an extra pair of chiavi and Katori had been helping to settle the chicks in with her mother's help over the last few days, the white fluffs quickly adapting to the little roost near the manor that housed another couple of adolescent chiavis who were thankfully okay with the additional company once they made their higher positions known.
Scars were nothing to Katori but that....well either way. Katori shifted a rope as she focused on tying the baskets to either side of the calf. "Well we have a little helper today." She smiled at the baby before looking back towards Finn, her expression bright and hopeful despite everything. "I guess I'm ready if you are." She held out the basket as she spoke, the thing hanging gently from her fingertips as she offered it to Finn. "The orchard is a bit to the north so it's a walk, but the fresh air should be nice. I just hope that the autumn weather lingers so that we dont' have to worry about a blizzard when we go further north."

Finn had done his best to avoid spending unnecessary time around the creatures that called the Sanctuary home. He had the experience as a stable hand to make chores easy enough, when he was allowed to do them, but connections weren't his strong suit. All that aside, he had visited the chicks a few times and had even spent the better part of an afternoon working on his letters with the two little bundles asleep around him in a pile of hay. He had no intention of bringing them with him when he left, but as far as animals went Finn didn't hate them.
Much in the same way he was tolerating the mammu calf happily tromping behind him.
He took the basket with his good arm and settled it into the crick of his elbow. "When we go further North? I thought this was your stopping point?"

Katori paused at the sudden question, a brief hesitation before moving forward with her own basket swinging freely from her arm. "Do you want it to be my stopping point?" She asked in return without glancing at Finn as she continued striding forward, the orchard slowly coming into sight as they rounded a slight bend on the trail that cut across an acre of land. There were more gardens and scattered trees here before going into the orchard, not really any grazing areas for the mammu and other animals they rescued which usually stayed towards the south of the sanctuary in the fields before the forest, and Katori was thankful for that since it gave them some privacy while the others worked with the animals.
Even though the orchard was still in sight, there was still a bit of field to cross to get there with a small stream cutting across that would dip into the forest towards the south. Katori eyed the calf for a second before deciding that it could wade through or take the bridge they had built for colder weather when one did not want to get their legs wet. "As it is I don't mind going north if you'd like the company, especially since I could use the time to train. There's supposed to be some monks living in the northern mountains that may be able to teach me some tricks." She gave a slight casual shrug to try to avoid the twisting of her heart as she waited for Finn's response. "It's your call since this is your quest, Finn. I'm just here if you want me around."

With the orchard in sight, albeit still a ways away, Finn started guiding their little group toward the bridge that would cross over the stream. He wasn't about to get his feet wet if he didn't have to. The yaeli had enough issues adjusting to the cooler nights as it was without adding wet socks to the mix.
"Seems crazy that anyone could live that far into the mountains." From what he understood the snow was as tall as any grown man and three times as cold. Wild creatures roamed the mountains, mad with hunger and a spite cold enough to turn blood to ice. Finn wasn't much of an adventurer so proving any of that wrong didn't appeal to him, and the thought of going even a little further didn't settle well with him.
So, maybe having a little extra muscle around wouldn't be so bad? She'd already proven herself and Katori wasn't the worst companion he could travel with.
"Might as well then. It's smarter to travel in a group anyway." Finn stepped up onto the bridge and when the calf showed some hesitancy he reached behind him, his basket falling down his arm a little, and gently touched the little one's trunk to lead it forward. "So, monks huh?"

A chuckle escaped Katori as she followed Finn across the bridge, her boots making barely any noise as she walked across the worn stones. "I would think someone who hates company could find it preferable as long as there was plenty of food for you." She taunted lightly as Finn agreed to traveling together. Despite her playful manner the hybrid kept an eye on the group and only relaxed once they were on solid ground. While the water wasn't deep enough to truly threaten anyone it was still better to avoid an accidental tumble in this weather.
"Yeah. Apparently there's a reclusive group of fighters who honor the mountain goddess by protecting a shrine." Katori gave a slight shrug. She wasn't certain if she believed in the myths surrounding oracles but at least she knew that there were fighters living in the mountains. "Once you resolve your connection up north maybe I'll take up more training. The fighting style may be something I can work with after all "
She brushed past with a small grin. "If I do disappear in the mountains for a few years don't try to miss me too much. Though I'm sure you'll be delighted to have a break from me." Katori reached down to pat the mama calf before shifting the baskets on her arm again. "these apples are good to go. Pick as many as you can carry!" She called out without wasting a moment, the hybrid trying to not linger on the strange twisting feeling that kept rising in her chest.

"I don't hate your company." Finn looked over his shoulder toward Katori before focusing back on the path ahead. "If I had as much fur as everything up here then hiding out in the mountains might hold more appeal. Since I don't I doubt I'd last long." Finn may have loathed what others were capable of, but he didn't hate everyone. He'd made a friend in Oba, as weird as that was to say, and his brother resided there. With whatever odd connection he had with Katori in mind that meant he had three people he could trust so surely that counted for something.
When she brushed past his brows lifted a bit in surprise before furrowing down into a frown. Getting cheeky, isn't she? Miss her when she was gone? He'd moved a damn hillside just to make sure she was alive of course he was going to -
Wait, were they flirting? Was this flirting? This back and forth thing, this little....Finn's lips curled back in horror and he may have remained there like an obtuse statue if the calf didn't push past him as well. It seemed that the apples were more appealing than the stricken yaeli and eventually he snapped out of it to start helping out.
With one arm it was slow going, but eventually Finn started making progress. His body worked on autopilot with his mind nearly a million miles away. With one key exception; he had enough control of his surroundings to stuff an apple in his mouth and chew on it while he worked.

It would be a lie to say that she wasn't happy to hear Finn accept her presence. It definitely was a leap from how they once tried to rip each other apart whenever they bumped into one another by chance. Whatever had changed between them wasn't exactly unpleasant but was rather strange and Katori still couldn't quite put a name to it. "That's fair. You know there's some hidden hot springs out that way which actually make the caves warm and pleasant despite the piles of snow outside." She mused quietly. "Get some furs and maybe we'll visit that area...if it's on the way."
Strangely enough while Finn paused a moment in horror, Katori thankfully had her back turned to him and was oblivious to the realization that this could potentially be flirting. There was that strange fluttering feeling that brought more laughter than usual to her lips, but she simply attested it to the joy of being home and sharing a moment with a new comrade. It was far too fun messing around with Finn and Katori could not resist teasing him. "What if I climbed up for some of the higher apples?" She asked after a moment, the hybrid's humming stopping as she walked towards Finn and studied the upper branches of the trees. "Or I could simply knock them down but I'm afraid I may over do it and they'll bruise..."

Finn passed her a droll stare, apple still half hanging out of his mouth. He gave it a hearty crunch before plucking the half-eaten fruit out. “You’re supposed to be resting your arms; not making them worse.” Climbing was almost entirely an arm and torso activity so he could only imagine what kind of strain that would have on freshly healed limbs. “Your family has enough brats running around that they can afford to send a few of them up into the trees for whatever we can’t grab.” It seemed like every time he turned around there was someone knew coming by for something or another, and after a while Finn stopped asking if they were related.

Katori pursed her lips in protest. Even if she was supposed to be recovering it didn't mean that she liked to actually behave. The hybrid let out a sigh though since she didn't want to fight with Finn at the moment and simply trudged on ahead with a slight shake of her head at his commentary. "Fine. But there better be a lot on the lower levels." She murmured as she started to shift the basket on her arm so that she could begin grabbing apples.
"There should be enough for cider. Am I allowed to help make that later, doctor?" She teased lightly after a moment as she slowed down to rest her arms, the muscles straining after being tied up for a few days. Katori pondered saying anything else but kept her lips closed for once as she stared at the orchard, her shoulders moving slightly as she rotated the joints to relieve some of the pressure in preparation for more apple gathering.

"I don't know; what's cider and how do you make it?"
He'd heard the term a few times here and there, but details about it were vague at best. When Finn felt a little bump at his side he turned to see the mammu calf sneaking apples from his basket instead of the ground. "No! No no no! What did I tell you?!" Finn tried to tug the basket away, but instead of being deterred the calf wrapped it's trunk around the handle. In terms of brute strength the little one had an advantage over the one armed yaeli and wrestled it away from him.
Soon enough it was trotting off with it's winnings, giving little toots of excitement, with a frustrated Finn giving chase. Running hurt like a b***h, but he couldn't let that goofy looking thing get away with his payload!

Katori could only gape at Finn for a moment before letting out a soft sigh. "You poor soul. It's spiced apple juice that's warmed up basically, I'm going to make it now that you've never had it before whether you want me to use my arms or not." She stated with a firm nod as they continued along, the hybrid searching for apples to place in the basket. She knew Finn had a rough past but...well it both frustrated her and broke her heart every time she heard him talk about something like it was so strange and unknown! If he wouldn't bite her then she'd wrap him up in comfortable furs and let him try all of the new things which she had once taken for granted. Despite their own arguments, all she wanted to do was show him that there could be happiness in this world if he would just give it a chance again. Not that he needed protecting...it seemed lately he had been the one chastising her more and helping her more than she had ever imagined possible. The realization made Katori's stomach twist in a strange yet not completely unpleasant way before yelling distracted the hybrid from her thoughts.
A struggle? Katori turned around with a concerned frown to watch as Finn bolted after the baby mamu. Once she realized what had happened the woman's frown quickly turned into a smile, the first true laugh of delight leaving her lips after so many days. "Fah-Finn! Do-don't hurt yourself! We can grab other apples!" Katori finally managed in between laughter before leaving her apple basket on the ground so that she could chase after the pair, hoping to minimize the damage as apples bounced from the captured basket while the chase continued through the orchard.
