"Um, she shouldn't be able to follow us here," said Pendour, and she was used enough to traveling to space now that she didn't even close her eyes as the scenery shifted from asphalt road to mosaic floors below and the sea above.
She wasn't sure if panic was the right word for what had happened when she'd heard Abzu screaming fire. She'd kept breathing. She'd acted. Adrenaline had spiked through her body, though, and now that she had a few seconds to notice her own feelings, she could feel it buzzing under her skin.
It wasn't her favorite feeling. She squeezed Abzu's hand tighter, stepped back so that she could press close to him and lay her head against his shoulder. Then she could take a few deep breaths while she listened to the sound of her waterfalls in the distance.
"What happened?" she asked, only then allowing her eyelids to flutter shut. "Just an attack, or?"
A moment passed. Pendour didn't move.
"Oh, also, pretend I'm giving you an introduction," she said. "Pendour. Welcome."
Around them, the wonder seemed welcoming enough on its own.

They definitely weren't on Earth anymore. That was the first thing he noticed when the air was suddenly less tense and less thick, and the ground was less grey and brown and more vivid and colorful, Looking up gave him the next clue; that wasn't quite the sky above them, and if it was, there was a layer of water in-between. Neptune, he was guessing. Not sure where else Pendour could have gotten them to as quickly as she did. He relaxed into her relaxing into him, taking a deep breath and absorbing the air of the wonder, the sea-- "Yeah. I was patrolling and came upon her. She strutted over so I figured she might be open to a chat or at least listening to some music and being on her way." Honestly, Abzu should have listened to his initial wariness. It might have prevented him from needing to scream fire and hoping someone would notice. "Figured this was Pendour. Thank you for the welcome." His laughter was warm and relaxed, as if he was already over what happened, even if part of him was still processing the fact that he had just almost died. "Seems peaceful here. A lot like you, actually."

"Ah," said Pendour, also relaxed enough considering the fact that she'd just seen a friend as close to losing his life as he'd been. Under other circumstances, the anxiety might have lingered in her body even after the danger had passed, but since her Transcendence, coming up to her wonder had always helped a calm pass over her as well. Anyway, the agent was gone. It wasn't like there was anyone around to be angry with, or scared of. They could prepare for next time, maybe, but that was all. "That happens sometimes," she told him. "Mostly the ones who want to talk do want to talk, but every once in a while they get all tricky. Until I Transcended I was always trying to keep an eye on people's hands." Of course even now she had to watch for knives and such, but the level of protection was a weight off her shoulders. "Here, do you want to see the cuddle room?" she asked, pulling away enough that she could walk, although she didn't let go of his hand. "It's a room just for cuddling. I think you'd like it. It's past the waterfalls, we can look at those, too."

"Don't think I like the tricky ones very much." To be honest, Abzu didn't necessarily like any of them. They were all theoretically deluded, and that delusion made many of them unfriendly. He had certainly had great conversations with a couple of them, but... Maybe he needed this transcendence for himself so he could have some conversations with the type like that agent without worrying about her going for his chest again. He'd like his soul to stay where it was supposed to. Generally a preference he was likely to stick to. "How do you transcend? Does that just happen, or?" His brows knit before his eyes lit up just as quickly, and he looked to the waterfalls while offering her hand a gentle squeeze. "We can talk about that on the way to the cuddle room and the waterfalls. That I want to see." And maybe take a nap afterward. A nap sounded good and it was definitely better than nearly dying-- "Your wonder's gorgeous by the way."

"Oh, Transcendence is-" she bit back the word easy as she led Abzu down a mosaic path towards the cove and the Knight's chambers that were hidden behind it. "Well, for me it came naturally, but for others it's different. It's all about bonding with your Wonder, restoring it and all that. It'll grant you protection in return," she said. For her, the glowing was always more of an afterthought. She worked in space all she could because healing was more important than violence, restoration more important than destruction. Still, she appreciated the protection, and she always liked seeing the marks on other people, too, and knowing that their souls were safe. "Which, I know you said your Wonder's scary, but mine was too, at first. It was dry as dry and it smelled like dead fish and the bottom of the cove was all full of people's bones." Now there was a fresher, salty scent to the air, and the waterfalls had a soothing sound to them as the two ducked into the path that went directly behind them. Pendour walked close enough to them that she was sprayed with a light mist, although if Abzu stayed on the other side he would have been safe from any water.

Abzu walked alongside her, hand in hers, eyes wandering as he took in everything around them. The mosaic pattern of the path they walked was gorgeous. He couldn't help but wonder who had done this, who has spent the time to create such fine handicraft below them, who had spent the time to maintain it and repair it if that had been needed. He couldn't help but wonder how Neptunian architecture had created the sounds of the waterfall he could hear in the distance. Maybe she had restored it if it was part of Transcendence to do so. The more she said, the more he could understand how the Negaverse deluded people into thinking that knights were aliens or sworn to other planets. If they dedicated themselves to their place in space and got rewarded, it was hard to argue the base logic of "they're clearly more concerned with space than us." It still missed that they were all born on Earth. It still missed they killed people on Earth. He made a small noise of confirmation as she continued, before once of surprise followed. "Dead fish and people and dry? Hard to visualize with how beautiful it is." He definitely didn't see any sign of dead things, although he supposed dead things made sense if these places were last populated hundreds of years ago... ... Was the darkness of his wonder hiding the same? He bit his lip. "My wonder would probably be less unnerving if it wasn't so dark." Unless it was dead, but he wouldn't put any further thought into that. "Yours is so bright and inviting." Abzu laughed. "But maybe part of taking care of my Wonder is figuring out how to make it the same." It made sense. Unless Neptunians had been gifted with dark vision, he didn't really know what else would have worked.

Hard to visualize? Pendour's smile at that was small, barely peeking out from where a strand of hair decided to fall in her face, but it was proud. She paused in between two of the waterfalls to look over the cove, now full of deep, shimmering water. Instead of death down there, there was life. "It's a lot different now, it's true," she said, her voice distant, dreamy. "The bones are all put to rest. Now if I dive, I find snails, and pearl oysters, and little fish. It was work, though." She glanced over her shoulder, good eye sparkling. "I had so much algae under my fingernails by the end of it. It might be different for you, though." As she turned back to the path, she looked thoughtful. "My best friend Transcended by getting his electricity running. He knows a thing or two about lighting up darkness. He loves space, too. I'm sure he'd help you out, if you wanted some pointers, maybe." Behind the largest waterfall was an ornate, pearl-encrusted door, and Pendour swung it open to reveal a room that did not look nearly as ancient as the rest of the place. The walls were still stone, of course, and there was a trapdoor in the middle and a crumbling bed in one corner, but all the corners were packed with beanbag chairs, and giant pillows, and chunky knit blankets. "The cuddle room," said Pendour.

Snails, pearl oysters, fish-- life was here, now, even if not human life. She had been able to do that much? That much life in what must have been a very dead place was just, "Impressive," and he meant it, accompanying that with a low whistle as they passed a bit closer by the cove. Well, she was evidently the expert here -- "I'm willing to talk to him! If he can get results anything close to this, he clearly knows what he's doing." And Abzu was lazy, so if someone else could either help him find the solution or just outright find it for him, that was the ticket. Maybe they could have a party afterward. Was his wonder made for parties-- The room that Pendour brought him too almost didn't fit, but it fit Pendour, and it also fit his constant mood. He slipped over to a large beanbag chair without hesitation and flopped into it. Abzu closed his eyes and took in a few deep breaths. "This is perfect." If Pendour wasn't careful, it was about to be his nap room. "I assume you put this room together, too? Definitely doesn't fit the appearance of everything else. "The vibes, though? Yes. This is very relaxing."

There wasn't really any place on Pendour that its Knight was not relaxed, these days. This place was her home. It was a part of her, so much so that it had etched itself into her skin, in lines that glowed like sunlight on the sea. Still, as the door to the cozy room clicked shut behind them, Pendour seemed to soften completely. In fact, her whole body melted as she flopped down onto a the beanbag chair next to Abzu. Her arm was flung across his back. Her nose was pressed into his shoulder. He was warm, and feeling his body next to hers helped to confirm that his life hadn't actually been snatched away in front of her eyes. He was breathing, and Pendour took comfort in that. "Encke's results are better than this," she said, thinking about his gardens, and animals, and even all the houses he'd managed to get in working order. "He's been doing this a long time. He was already established and Transcended back when I was still a Page." She did peel her good eye open long enough to peer over at all her soft furniture. "And I decorated in here, yeah. It's the Knight's quarters, so, um, it's my room." The um was because it still felt like Irving's room sometimes, but she was trying to push past that, and every plush pillow she brought up here helped a little. "Can I play with your hair?"

And Abzu was quite content with the closeness, leaning right into it and scooting his body just that much closer for ease. Physical touch and the cuddle room itself was an infinite improvement over nearly dying because he had tried too hard to be open or trusting when his intuition had been telling him to flee-- Not important now, he supposed. An eye popped back open for a moment when she intimated just how long this Encke had been involved in everything. He had already transcended by the time she awoke? How long had this s**t been going on? It made him wonder just how many of the news reports he saw could be linked to other things; how many of the house fires he saw were actually Chaos? How many deaths? How many fights? It was so prevalent as to be a bit terrifying, but not enough to actually interrupt his vibes. "Oh! This feels like your room. It's nice." His laugh was warm. "Go right ahead. Wash day was yesterday so it should feel pretty soft, too--" He paused, closing his eyes again, and then asked, "How long has this Encke been at this?' There were a few suspicions he had with the effort she took and the effort he must have taken to already be here before she even started, but so much of his page life had been about establishing what this even was. A timeline seemed important.

Pendour didn't rush with answering his questions. This was her room on her Wonder. It was a place of peace, not a place to obsess about how long the war had gone on without plenty of soothing touches and listening to the sounds of water in the distance for balance. She rubbed his scalp for a few moments in a small massage, then worked her long fingers into his hair, playing and playing with the bright blue strands. It was soft, and it smelled lovely, too. Having a repetitive motion to do was soothing in itself for Pendour. "Over ten years," she said eventually, because she wasn't just going to leave the question hanging, either. "This war is less of a skirmish for a city and more of, um," she started a small braid, "The eternal struggle between good and evil. The people who say it will be over if Metallia is destroyed are wrong. Not that it wouldn't free a lot of people, but we'd still have to work to be good for our whole lives, even then."

If she wasn't careful, Abzu was going to fall right asleep. He was already halfway there, comfortable with human touch and closed eyes and the nice sounds in the background, and maybe his concern wasn't so important with a whole scalp massage as a reward-- But like their casual conversation in the hot tub, he welcomed the serious interludes in-between. It was nice to be able to have conversations like this calmly, without the potential stressors of a fight, of his soul being taken, of another's being taken-- "Over a decade," he repeated, letting out a low whistle. He had a feeling the fight was extensive, but he honestly hadn't realized just how extensive. How long had this truly been going on? Decades? Centuries? Was the Negaverse just the latest in the eternal struggle between good and evil to rise to prominence? It was heavy; it was a lot to think about. It was easier with her braiding his hair, admittedly. "Still would like to see her defeated," he mused. "If they're the major faction at the moment, it'll at least give us some breathing room to rebuild before the next wave." But he supposed that wasn't the point-- "How long have you been part of this?"

"Four years," said Pendour without missing a beat. She didn't seem particularly concerned that she'd been at it for so long, or worried that her efforts might have to stretch far into the future. She'd accepted all that a long time ago. Anyway, for each of the awful moments that she'd endured, there were lovely ones like right now. It felt like a victory to see Abzu falling asleep under her fingertips, here in the sanctuary she'd built on her Wonder. With luck, maybe she could even erase his fear before it turned into trauma. "And don't worry, I want to destroy Metallia, too," she said. "I try to be nice to people, not, um, ancient conglomerations of primordial evil." Her fingers untangled from his hair, and she pressed her face back into his shoulder, instead. "But we can talk about that later, maybe?" The relaxation room was very effective. Her own eyelids were already drifting shut.

Four years... It hadn't even been a year for him, but a year had already been so much. He learned of aliens, of the force that was Chaos, how even evil magical organizations trapped people the same way as everything else, of the force that fought against them because they had to and there was no real option for anything else-- His chuckle came out more like a whiff at how relaxed he was despite the buzz of thoughts as she untangled her fingers from his hair. "Ancient conglomerations of primordial evil seem like they'd be difficult to be friendly to." And honestly, he had questions for anyone who succeeded... Those general-sovereigns, maybe. He yawned, and it was the only reason why his eyes cracked back open for a moment before he settled back in, closing his eyes and scooting just a tad closer. "Sounds like a," another yawn, "plan though..." His words dragged as the concept didn't quite finish. The nap room had done its job.
