It was time to check over the new beasts. She usually prefered to do this with older help but today Jiu was all that was available. He could help her observe and she would use lots of ropes and he wouldnt be close just her unless she was sure. These were new janarim, possible studs for the line they were building. “These are not like the local janarim Jiu, you must be quite careful, they may still be quite wild depending on where they came from.”

He walked along side his grandmother, one hand holding onto her shirt hem, but seemed to be more focused on where his feet were being placed. He was listening of course, he was always good at listening to what people said. He could remember things very well. It wasn't until he heard that they could be wild that he looked up. His eyes went from the ground, which caused him to trip over air in that instant, to looking up at her with a bit of curiosity. "Where?" He questioned. Jiu wanted to know just where these new beasts had come from that being wild meant they were dangerous. It made him wonder if they were more dangerous from certain parts of the world and if so who made them so angry they had to be that way.

“Oba likely, and i said maybe, it depends on their temperament, how they were captured, if their handlers were good and how much they were worked with. Janarim are native to Oba.” Her eyes were trained on the paddock where the beasts had been left to decompress for about three days after their travels. “We will assess their health and their temperaments as we go. They should all be male but well best to check that too.”

It gave him a bit to think about. He knew there was other places in the world because his mother came from somewhere else. He just wasn't sure how far that distance was. He went back to looking at the ground as Nin spoke but his face scrunched up when it was mentioned that they'd be checking to make sure they were all males. He gave a little grunt of disagreement to that. That didn't sound like something he wanted to do. Didn't beasts like privacy? Wasn't that weird for them?

"Its not hard and it does not bug them, but sometimes the dealers lie, or your brothers forget to double check, Janarim females are just as beefy as the males sometimes." She strode to the paddock fence. "So which one do you want to start with?" The three janarim in question looked at them as one. Big armor plated fangy things, they were one of Nin's favorite critters. "Arn't they beautiful?"
She sighed dreamily.

His face remained scrunched up at the thought. One, he really didn't want to invade their privacy. Two, how dare vendors lie. Three, he'd be mad at his dad and his uncles if they forget to double check on purpose. Still, grandma said it needed done.
When they reached the fence and he could see the beasts better he paused long enough to let go of Nin's shirt so he could get closer. Jiu only went as far as the fence allowed but his little hands gripped the barrier as he stared. Beautiful wasn't a word he'd use but amazing was. Those teeth!
At the question of which to start with he pointed to the one farthest away then looked back at Nin. "That one."

"Okay, we will go with that one." She took a handy rope and standing on the other side of the fence sent the lariat out, sailing over the others to neatly ring around the started and displeased janarim. She winked at Jiu, "I practiced on your grandpa...alot." She had her fun! Slowly she guided the beast to the rail, watching his attitude the whole way. He watched them attentively, but at no point did he show the whites of his eyes or shake his head, so being roped at least he was used to. She led him along the fence and he didn't seem spicey. "Looks well enough trained to lead anyway. Stand back." Once her grandson was safe, she opened the small gate that would just let the one janarim through at a time before shutting it behind the beast.
"This is best done in the smaller round pen." Before the let the beast go, she ducked down. "Its a boy."

He watched her rope the one he'd pointed out, his head tilting to the side as he stared. Knowing his grandpa had had something similar happen to him only made him glance at his grandma before offering a slight smile. He was amused.
Then his attention went back to the janarim. It seemed okay with being pulled toward them by the lead. When he was told to stand back he moved. His little feet taking him quickly away to a safe distance. He knew better than to push his luck when around beasts that were unpredictable.
Of course he did scrunch up his face at Nin when she checked and confirmed it was a boy. Jiu shook his head at her and grunted to show he didn't like that part of it all.

She grinned back, she was so proud that she had made him smile. "You might not be a vet then kid." She grinned. "That is the simplest procedure there is."
She gently checked the beasts feet, and the joins in the armor. Then she carefully tied its head between two handy poled and opened its mouth. "This one seems trained for ground work, I'll let your Dad test weather he is ridable. I am not getting up there." She was more valuable in one piece after all.
"He is about done and can go back in with the other two." She dusted her hands on her pants and led the critter back.

He watched everything she did. While he might not like the idea of doing it he knew that knowing the general procedure was good. Still, he seemed to pay more attention when Nin mentioned having his dad ride the beast. Huaijiu lifted his hands to show he wanted up on the beast. If his dad could do it then he could too, right? He'd seen his dad do a lot of things and he remembered them fairly well.
And if his grandma had the lead then it would be fine. It wasn't like it would go very far.

She stared at her grandson for a moment, calculating. She had the lead and he was awfully light, and for the most part big critters respected little critters more than adults. Plus being that small he would bounce and roll, where she in her advanced years would just thud. Nin glanced around, when it came right down to it, her whole family was a bit crazy and so was she. Jiu wouldn't ask if he hadn't sorta thought it through. "Okay, don't tell your mother."
Nin scooped him up and deposited him on the janarims back while keeping a death grip on the lead.

He waited but eventually his grandma gave in and he got what he wanted. Once settled on the beast he leaned forward to stroke the Janarim's neck. Jiu wanted to show he was thoughtful to the creature. He made sure his legs were loose and he wasn't digging his heels in.
Though he did look at Nin afterward. "Why not tell mum?" He didn't think his mother would mind too much since the whole family was safe about things.

"Honestly, because I have no idea how trained he actually is and I'm hoping that your and his energies just mesh well. Usually critters are more gentle while we are still small. There is an unspoken kidlet rule so long as the kid in question is gentle and respectful. Cubs can be forgiven where adolescents and adults cannot."
She stroked the critters neck, he seemed not to care too much about the boy on his back and followed her placidly.
"I think he is watching his step so as not to disturb you." She grinned happily.

He blinked a few times as he stared at her then looked down at the beast he sat on. Why it would be worried about disturbing him he didn't know. Of course he did find he liked the beast, for the most part.
So he leaned forward again and gave another pat to its neck. "Good boy Corvus." Jiu named the beast as a way to show he liked him.

"You know, Corvus does not have a master yet. I'm sure that if you promise to take very good care of him, that he might accept you as that master, or rather best friend as it is supposed to be. He does seem to enjoy your company."
So Kiyelt wasn't the only one who liked to give critter gifts. This was her grandson and he was brave enough to get on the back of a beast this size and the beast liked him, in her mind they had chosen each other.
