It was late. There weren’t a lot of places open, so the pickings were slim. If he didn’t want fast food, there were only a handful of decent restaurants still open. He’d already had a s**t day, and a s**t night, and the last thing he wanted to deal with was s**t food, too. He hadn't eaten since breakfast--if you counted coffee, which, he shouldn't.
Meetings kept going on and on and on and by the time he'd gotten out, lunch was completely gone. So, he'd worked.
He'd tried to do a good deed but couldn't even find the person he thought he was supposed to be helping.
Then, he'd run into some girl. Negaverse, probably, whatever. He didn't even care, he was too tired and upset to even think about things. He'd been almost ready to just go home and eat bread or something when he saw the restaurant lights on and open. He'd eaten there once before, it wasn't bad.
It was open, that was more important than anything else. There was a stickiness in the air and he knew it was going to rain. Probably going to storm. His mother was throwing a tantrum back at the house and his phone had been blowing up for the past few hours. He didn't want to go home, he'd take any excuse to be out a little longer.
Being at the office for so late had worked so far.
Just ten more minutes, that's all he wanted.
He parked the car and called in his order, sat there for a few minutes, and then dragged himself inside. There were a few people at the tables--more than he'd thought, and even a girl in line already. Waiting. Hopefully not for long, he really wanted this to be just in and out.
Especially because the second he closed the door behind him, the lightbulb over his head popped so loudly and burned out the entire row of lights immediately.

Gabby’s hands were still throbbing slightly. That damn Knight had hit them harder than she would have thought possible, but they weren’t broken at the very least. Her fingers still all moved, and though they were sore, sore was much better than damaged…even if it wasn’t permanently.
All she wanted right now was a milkshake. It would taste good and would feel so nice to just wrap her hands around the cold glass, and though this restaurant wasn’t a place that she would normally frequent…it was open so that was something. It was a little dirty, but places that were available this late tended to be that way…though.
Though when the door opened again, and the light popped with a noise like a gunshot, plunging the entrance way into darkness, Gabby swiftly spun around, scowling at the newcomer, half expecting it to be a robber. “Are you trying to kill us? What the hell did you just do? If you’re looking for a place to rob, I swear that this isn’t it, and I’m not it so just turn around and leave.”
She could take care of herself if it came to it…it would end up with everyone in the restaurant starseeded but. She could take care of herself.

Jace stood there, phone in his hand, frozen in place. Getting yelled at by a strange girl who assumed he wanted to kill them or--wait, did he look like a robber?
He looked down at his suit and even if he knew what he was wearing, it was dark. She probably couldn't see it.
His mood plummeted again and he thought about just walking out.
"...I really just wanted to pick up my order," he said quietly, in as even of a voice as he could manage. "I'm not here to rob anyone. I want something to eat, and I want to go home. That's literally it."
If the universe could just let him, that'd be great.

“Was that a gunshot or?”
She paused and her eyes flickered up to the light that gave another strange spark and she sighed. “...It was the light blowing out. I’m sorry. I’m tired and have a headache. I heard a loud noise and it went dark, it’s late at night, what do you expect me to think, you know?”
It wasn’t quite an apology but…it was something close to it, or it might have been, she wasn’t really sure. Her next words though, perhaps that where the apology lay.
“...Did you get hurt with that light? Did you like, hit your head on it or something? No offense, but you’re not that tall. You didn’t get glass in your hair, did you?”
Okay, slight worry, that was almost an apology too. She would take it, and he would deal. Gabby let her eyes flicker over him once again, frowning slightly.

He looked frustrated, but tired, like it was just too much for him to care to deal with tonight. "I'm fine," he said, very careful to use a quiet tone so he didn't come across as an angry intruder or something scary. He didn't know if he was fine, he didn't check to see if he had glass in his hair. If he did, knowing his luck, he'd just cut his hand open trying to check for it.
"Just, long day." Long night.
"I'm sorry I startled you. I don't know what happened. I just opened the door, that's all." Didn't even let it slam behind him.
...It didn't escape his notice that there was no one at the counter, so either they didn't care that there were people waiting, or they were hurrying to get their food and get them out of here.
He really hoped it was the latter, he really didn't want to turn into his mother over a to-go order.

Shrugging, Gabby turned her attention back to the counter and gave a small sigh. “It’s not your fault. This place is just a trainwreck. If you’re picking something up, I hope you haven’t already paid for it, honestly, I think we should just both leave and hit up the fast food place at the end of the block. I’ve been standing here for almost fifteen minutes and I really don’t think they give two shits about new customers. Or maybe it’s just stranger danger for this time of the night. All I want is a milkshake, and you know, I can get a crappy one at the burger place.”
She paused and sighed. “If their ice cream machine is working, that is.”
Yawning, Gabby shrugged. “If you’re staying, good luck but I doubt you’ll get what you want from here.”
Getting up on tip toe, Gabby turned her phone flashlight on and peered at what she could see of the top of the male’s head, brushing a few stray pieces of glass out of it since he seemed like he wasn’t going to do it himself.
“Anyway. I’m out. Come with me if you want. I don’t mind company so long as you’re not a robber.”

The close contact was visibly surprising; Jace had almost been expecting to be hit but instead–
She brushed his hair out.
Briefly, he looked over her shoulder to see if anyone was there and–
Still couldn't see anyone. No one had even come to check and see what had happened out here. He opened his phone to see if there was any update on his order and it still hadn’t moved. Didn’t even seem like it had been started. Dejectedly, he pressed the cancel button and watched as the order cancelled immediately. Just like that, like it had been waiting for him to cancel all this time.
“...I guess there was a diner across the road. It’s probably greasier than this place.”
But the lights were on. He could see the waitress. And there was a crappy fast food place close enough that he could still see the sign.
“I guess it’s better than going home hungry. Thanks for the heads up about this place.”
He just wanted to eat something warm. He didn’t know if he wanted company, but she was the first person who had done or said anything nice all day, so. What the hall, sure.
He wasn’t a robber, so they probably wouldn’t have any problems.
